DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Uh, I'm worried. This is NOT the place to be. Too many people out there would
like to annihilate The Bender. All I really want to do is to try one more tournament
to add to my TC and TV, and to get out of here alive-- and hopefully undefeated.
I would defer, but I really want one more FE to optimize, and I have to hope I
am not "pulled" unexpectedly early. But here I am getting ahead of myself, because I
am in danger and could lose that next fight and even be killed. And to think, all I
ever wanted out of life is a retirement package and a beach full of bikini beauties.
(I should have been a government employee-- not a gladiator!)
I would finish with a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all, but like
Oremaster, I don't believe in that nonsense. But now, Ora, she'd be tellin' me I
have to say it. So consider it said, under duress. That's what the life of a
gladiator is-- duress.

SPY REPORT
Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport.
I doubt LAPUR will ever be the same. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for
there are sorrows to drown for CLAN CROW, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 4
into 9th. OPEN HAND stable has parlayed this turn's 2-2-0 into a 4 space move up the
rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys! On their very first
turn, STANKONIA had a 4-1-1, and with this kind of luck or skill, should do well.
Welcome to LAPUR. And let's see, SOLWYN fought MAGDALA and gained 20 points and
contributed to MID EARTH's 5-0-0. ANSHIN has lost to CLAYBANK, falling 12 points,
while helping make BLACK SAMURAI a 1-3-0 turn. And not without some honor, PRIORE
now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of LAPUR. By the way, was that our
Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Burning Tree?
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. BLACK SAMURAI has cause to stand tall,
as they were LAPUR's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to
beat. And avoiding BLACK SAMURAI more than any other team we find MID EARTH. LAPUR,
are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior
this turn was CARDOW HUNTERS' warrior GRASSFIRE. More fighters challenged her than
challenged the Duelmaster!
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. MS JACKSON must have surprised
STANKONIA this turn, after they sent her to the Dark Arena, but the Dark Arena
couldn't hold her! Kudos go out to CAPTAIN KIRK this turn, for revenging TREKKERS'
bloodfeud against CARDOW HUNTERS' warrior GRASSFIRE. Well done. We'd like to remind
certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's
considered rude.
I like this place, LAPUR, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Always good to rest in LAPUR, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until you see my quill in LAPUR again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Kicker Murphy -- Old buddy, well I did challenge, and I was lucky, but I am not so
sure I want to be HERE. It feels mighty dangerous! -- Bismuth Bender

Cairraig Amadan -- What? Why should I...? It wasn't you who killed me. And
besides, we never challenge at ALL hardly, I think the one challenge per year that

Gowron -- Oh, really, those stewards! Not "viciously subdued," surely? I just won,
that's all. And a good job, too. -- Grassfire
Ulphor -- Heck. You really burned me up. I cringe to think what I might be reborn

NAME CHANGE-O-RAMA
The crowd was surprisingly orderly, but it was still a crowd, and the Commission
clerk, Algernon, looked at it uneasily. Whenever this many people came together to
petition for something, it meant trouble. For him, anyway. Records to be altered.
Altering records was Bad. It made Extra Work.
His assistant clerk leaned close and whispered, "If it weren't for gladiators, we
wouldn't have jobs. Smile at them and ask what they want."
Algernon closed his eyes briefly. Looking at this crowd made him dizzy. They
were all wearing black and white stripes. Like a herd of zebras, except that zebras
didn't carry swords. Then he took a deep breath and managed a smile. "What... ah,
what can I do for you?"
"We want new names," the first gladiator said. There was a number on the front
of his shirt: 0381. He thumped the number with his thumb. "This here isn't a
name--"
"We want REAL names!" That voice came from farther back in the crowd.
"Yeah! We've paid our dues," another shouted, "and we've EARNED real names!"
One from the very back yelled, "I want to be called Tom."
All the others turned to look at him.
Algernon couldn't see him, but apparently those looks were accusing. Well, he
could understand that, "Tom" was such a... common name.
"My mom called me Tom," the voice in the back protested. "It's a good name."
"It isn't the name you put on the petition," 0381 said. "We talked about this.
We got our manager's agreement. You get the name on the petition."
"But--!"
Algernon didn't really want to keep staring at all these stripes while they
argued. He picked up the petition. "These names are the ones you want?"
0381 turned back. "Yes."
"It's a lot of trouble, and when other people see that YOU are getting name
changes, THEY are going to want them--" Seeing the gladiators beginning to frown...

for it. Get it all over with at once." He glanced at the petition, shuddered
slightly, and passed it to his clerk. "We'll announce it, proclaim it, even, and you
will get the names on this petition. And others will get the names THEY think they
should have had, too." He paused. "And I think I'll get a new name, I'm tired of
being an Algernon...."
