DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Well, well, well it seems every dog does have his day after all. Ye ol Bismuth
Bender, you're not nearly as tough a borg as advertised. Though next time might be
different with you having another tourney under your belt. But then again with you
being a tourney baby it is quite possible that you won't fight in Lapur again for a
couple years, which means I will be long gone. Either way good luck to you in the
tourney. I am sure everyone here in Lapur will be rootin for ya.
Duelmaster Priore
SPY REPORT
Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in LAPUR.
Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! Coming up with
a solid 5-0-0 outing, CARDOW HUNTERS has advanced 3 places in the rankings.
Advancing in the rankings was BLACK SAMURAI who went from last turn's 363-334-22, to
this week's record of 366-335-22. Hey everybody, watch out for STEEL SHARPENER, who
flew up 16 points in the rankings after mashing TANE like a melon. Keep your eye on
this beast. And falling like a basher in the top ten was BAHRAM, who dropped 14
points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with AKUMU. In front of all the
crowds, THE CLEAR took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum two weeks.
4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that
location.
Here is other news that is of note. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't
avoid BLACK SAMURAI, please raise you hand. Wow. Does LAPUR really have that many
liars? For those of you who like math, try this one: BLACK SAMURAI + Weapons That
go Boom = METAL MINCERS + Avoid City. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes,
ANSHIN would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. In
a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, GOWRON went after CLAYBANK, who was higher
by 25 points. Well, when the dust settled, GOWRON was overcame by CLAYBANK.
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). DARIUS defied all odds and slew SHEWISH
GIANT in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as SHEWISH
GIANT's meat is notoriously tough. Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will say
both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh?
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in LAPUR have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some
tracks. Its been real, and its been fun, but it hasn't been real fun...-- The

Darius of Open Hand -- We salute you on your Lord Protectorsip. -- The Metal Mincers
Priore -- You are the man! Kudos on The Title and your superb fight, dismantling me
easily. Now I don't have that albatross of the undefeated arena-- even though I
really miss it! -- Bismuth Bender
Gowron -- Thanks for the challenge. I needed a breather. Wins are nice; you are so
kind. -- Plutonium Puncher (slathering it on...)
Sulu -- You were just too skilled and too experienced for me. Blast those MUGS! --
Steel Sharpener
Chisaru,
I beat you.
Are you blue?
Lead Lancer
Congratulations, Priore, on your Duelmastership of the best arena in the land. -- Ora
Me borgs done 2-2. Like kissin' me sister. Ugh! Bit yon load out, Mincers! Aye.
-- Oremaster
HAPPY NEW YEAR! -- Ora and Oremaster (from the therapists office)
Ulphor -- You fight like a Delarquan! Perhaps you're some sort of seditionist sent
to stir up trouble! -- Bahram
Deadly Assassin -- I hope I have as much luck with open-handed aimed-blows in ADM.
Solwyn -- Not quite what I had in mind when I said I wanted to get hammered. --
Magdala
Bond Servant -- Good fight. I didn't expect that level of competition from a stand-
in. That critical attack nearly took me out. -- Tane
Gladiatorial Commission -- I showed up but was never assigned an opponent. Couldn't
find anyone willing to fight me? I can understand that. -- Iryana
It's this idea everyone had of going south for the winter.
Bismuth Bender -- Well, so much for "undefeated," eh? -- Jorja
Looking at Bismuth's personal to Ulphor, I might repeat it: Ulphor, have you no
shame? You've killed two of my Hunters. -- Jorja
Steel Sharpener -- Ah, was that why you kept leaning closer and sniffing? --
Windflower
Magdala -- And so you should have been proud! I was proud for you, too. Never let
'em keep you down, woman. -- Claybank
Open Hand -- Thank you. Unfortunately, death does happen in the arena. -- Jorja
Our congratulations to Darius. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
Captain Kirk -- Defeat, okay. But you will NOT "boldly go where no man has gone
before." Don't even TRY to put your hand there, bub! -- Grassfire
Anshin -- Hmm, could I reasonably say "you were clay in my hands"? Probably not,
that's more commonly my role. Well... good fight. I honestly didn't expect to win
it. -- Claybank
Bob -- Drat. It was probably the heater you brought into the arena, right? --
Snowflake
So Clean -- Wow, I have never had a clock that clean before! I wonder it can even
tell time, it's been so, um, traumatized by cleaning. -- Windflower
Gasoline Dreams -- You dream about THAT? Why? -- Wintersong
Akumu -- Good learns and a quick win adds up to a good day. -- Priore
Hardwood and the Cardow Hunters -- I don't know what has gotten into me lately. I
have no excuse for my actions and I know this must sound hollow, but Hardwood's death
was not intentional. -- Ulphor
Spin Mcduecan -- Impressive challange, Sir Spin, til we meet again. -- Solwyn
Sulu -- Wow, someone in the commission office must have it in for me after that
matchup. -- Wenien
Snowflake -- Hasn't your manager warned you about my guild!?! -- Mothias
Oremaster -- Why is it always one of my warriors that ends up ruining your plans? At
least this time your warrior survived. -- Visionist
Bahram -- Did you actually think you could beat me with that silly weapon? -- Ulphor
Magdala -- Thanks for the tutoring and the win. -- Solwyn
Gul Dukat -- I knew all my extra training this last cycle would pay off. -- Wenien

"DARK ARENA" -- The Novel
For centuries, the Shagornan Elves have been forced to live underground.
Human invaders, the Delarquans, burned their forests, sparking a war of elven
annihilation. The elders told tales that when the Delarquans marched to war
against the elves, the land itself bled as they passed. Since the war, the
elves have dwindled with every passing year, while the humans multiply like
rodents across the land of Alastari.
Now, the Delarquans have disappeared. Some say they departed, others indicate
it.s a ruse, but there have been whispered rumors of another greater threat
looming in the region. Khyron of the Shagornan Elves has been tasked to
determine the cause, realizing that failure is probable and at the end of the
road death could be the only reward.
Khyron has known only the safety of the caves, but now he must journey to the
world above...the World with No Ceiling.
Throughout the years, many fine writers have played Duelmasters/Duel II and have
contributed greatly to the history and background of the world of Alastari. One very
intense period, during the early '90's, was during the Rocanis War, when authors from
both the Delarquan and Free Blades arenas collaborated on writing the history of the
invasion of the arena-city of Rocanis. Mark Manley (aka Grimwood) is a long-time
manager in Rocanis, and was one of the writers who contributed so much to this
history. Over the subsequent years, he has worked to bring his novelization to life
and make the story of the War and the preceding events which led to it available to
the greater public. Many Rocanis legends appear in the book: Itoz Trollbane,
Sandstorm, and others. The novel is a treat to read--even more so if you are familiar
with the game!
