TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Owsly comes out of his office just off the training room under the barn back at
the farm. Clan Crow is hard at work training. Kicker and Pub are sparring each
other. Cairraig is doing shield exercises, and Double is running through weapons
practices. Owsly looks the group over and observes for a moment, realizing something
is out of place. He approaches Cairraig.
"Where be Spin?" Owsly asks the veteran on the tam.
"Me not be sure. He was here earlier," responds Cairraig. "Maybe Kicker and
Pub knows where he be."
Owsly nods and crosses the room to where Kicker and Pub are sparring. He
watches as Kicker makes a slash at Pub's head with a wooden blade. Pub spins, then
thrusts low, turning the blade at the last moment to slice suddenly upward, catching
Kicker in the chest.
"Nice move, laddie!" Kicker exclaims as he gives Pub a salute with the wooden
practice blade.
"Thank. Me been workin on that move. The sparrin sure be helping oot."
Pub notes. Kicker nods his head in agreement. Owsly clears his throat and the two
turn to him with a start.
"Me dannae be supposin you two be seein Spin 'round have ye?" The two look at
each other with blank expressions.
"We been workin hard at trainin, Owsly, so we dannae really notice," Kicker
notes with a shrug.
"Not noticin be the very reason ye be gittin yer arse kicked the last few
times!" Owsly quips. Kicker looks down at his feet. "Pub be doin the same move
every time he spins away from o' shot ta his chest. Ye shoulda seen it comin o'mile
away." Pub's mouth drops open half in surprise and half as though insulted. "Git
back to it, ya two, and try ta pay attention ta yer opponent. Maybe Double be knowin
where he be." Owsly spins on a heel and heads over to where Double is practicing
with varieties of blades against practice dummies.
"Double, ye seen Spin?" Owsly asks. Double stabs his short spear into the chest
of a training dummy and turns to face Oswly.
"Yeah, me be seein him. He be top side behind da barn, down by the dock at da
pond." Double says, pointing to the hatch in the ceiling of the training room.
Owsly's eyebrows furrow, the look of obvious aggravation on his face. He turns
to head for the hatch when Double calls to him.
"Owsly. Me know me be the newest guy on da team 'n all, but take it easy on da
lad. He's had o' rough couple o' weeks. He be tryin ta put his head on straight.
Some encouragement might be doin him some good." Double pulls the short spear from
the training dummy and begins his practice anew.
Owsly nods his head more to himself than to Double and heads up the ladder into
the barn. Once he's in the barn, he grabs the lit lantern from the dowel on one of
the supports for the barn and heads out the back and down the hill toward the pond
that serves as irrigation for his brother's farm.
As he gets nearer, he calls out to Spin. "Spin? Spin? Are ye there, lad?" He
gets no response but he can see the silhouette of the man, sitting on the dock facing
the water, in the half moonlight. Owsly walks up and sets the lantern down a few fet
back from the edge of the dock. He then walks up and sits down beside Spin, his feet
hanging off the dock and dangling above the water.
"What ye be doin out here, lad? Ye should be trainin with the clan."
"Aye, me know. But me be havin o' hard time findin me focus. First it be
Magdala, then me poor performance against Bahram, then...."
"Whoa laddie, stop right there!" Owsly says lightly. "Ye been havin some hard
knocks lately, me know. But ye made it on the Crow Clan fer a reason. Yer o'
fighter lad, o'fighter and a decent one ta boot. Magdala knew when she be steppin
inta the arena that death may or dannae come. It be a choice we all make. Ye made
it yerself--deep down inside, ye know it be o'possibility. As fer Bahram, well, he
be an experienced fighter and o'tough match fer ye style o'fightin but we Clan Crows
dannae quit! Ye can lose all four of ye feuds but ye dannae quit until Owsly be
sayin ye quit and me dannae be ready ta do that just yet! Ye understand?" Owsly
turns his head and looks at Spin.
"Me understand," Spin says, nodding his head.
"And we be backin ya da whole way," pipes in Kicker from behind them, nearly
startling Owsly into the pond. Spin turns to look back behind him and finds Kicker,
Pub, Cairraig, and Double standing behind the lantern, pints in hand. Pub hands Spin
a pint and Kicker hands one to Owsly.
"Ta the Clan!" Kicker toasts as Spin and Owsly get to their feet.
"Ta the Clan!" The rest chime in as the mugs clash together.
"Now down those pints and get yer lazy arses back ta training! Me not gonna be
takin' too many more o' those 1-3 turns!"
"Back ta the old blunt and ta da point Owsly me see." Double whispers to Spin,
who nods.
"Me heard that, pup! You'll be trainin in full plate tonight!" They all laugh
and head back to the barn.

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out LAPUR to see
what's new. I don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings or anything, but MID EARTH really
goofed with their 0-0-0. TREKKERS like really fought hard to move up to 3rd from
6th. Way to go! Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, CLAN CROW! 'Cause they
got 4-1-0 and moved up to 5th! MVP award for INSLUMNATIONAL? STANKONIA's proud of
him after beating BUTTERFACE and getting 22 points. Talk about yer big time losers!
BUTTERFACE got smashed by INSLUMNATIONAL, and lost 17 points! Oh, wow, like the
Duelmaster must be the most popular beast in all LAPUR. It got the most challenges.
(But what about proposals?) Like, PUB O'CONNOR must be pretty gutsy! He challenged
the Duelmaster from METAL MINCERS. Does this guy have a death wish or what! And I
was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome PUB
O'CONNOR. Aren't CLAN CROW proud. (Oh, my.) Is the Duelmaster really being a real
snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. The warriors
of MID EARTH must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys
know something that I don't? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are BOHICA? MID EARTH,
an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an invitation!
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job,
that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. Its
