TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Take The Fifth
"Thirty years. Jesus. When you say it like that...." Ellis Boyd Red Redding,
The Shawshank Redemption
I hopped off the coach a few miles outside of Lapur, giving a slight bow to the
Coachman who, wearing the eternal black that coachmen have worn since the beginning
of time, gave me a nod with the hint of a glint in his eye. For all I knew, this
might be the same guy whose coach I hopped 30 years ago when first coming to Lapur.
The coach, like a painfully wrought sentence replete with independent clauses,
metaphors, and similes, proceeded on uninterrupted.
I thought it made the most sense to wander my way into town without fanfare,
shuffling off the edge of Thalmis Road right after the Toehold bridge as the former
made its way into the outer wards of the city of Lapur. I trudge alongside merchant
and peasant, though none seemed inclined to idle conversation. Nostalgia is a
dangerous guide, so I took nothing from the silence except the opportunity to
consider my plan in the days to come in the context of my experiences of the last
several weeks.
The journey here had been long, tiring and, like some women I have known,
fraught with unexpected challenges. It wasn't the changes in the Alastari landscape
so much; after all, the cities hadn't moved. Nor, really, did it seem to point to a
change in culture across the residents I was fortunate enough to make acquaintance or
with whom I broke fast. Rather, it was the evolution in communication that initially
caught me, if you will, with my pants down.
The door of the privy I sat in outside the Dullens Tellers Tavern had
rattled with the enthusiastic thumping of, presumably, a patron who had worse timing
than I.
"Wait your turn," I snarled, in turn turning the page of the Dullens Daily News.
"Good Sir," came the voice on the other side of the banded door, "the City Guard
requires your presence on this side of that door, forthwith, if you understand me.
If you would be so good as to indicate your intention to comply immediately, we
shan't be required to break the aforementioned door down upon you. But, I beg you to
believe that, either way, it is all the same to us."
"Us? How many friends did you bring, friend, to interrupt the air-pollutional
constitutional of a mere traveler? Is it against the local laws to drop a few
friends off at the pool or something? Speaking of friends, how many do you have out
there?"
"I assure you, Sir, all shall be made clear upon your exit."
Have you ever tried to saunter out of a toilet? It's harder than it sounds.
But I did a fair to middling job and found myself in the company of three, count 'em,
one, two, three city guards who all seemed to know their business. I gave myself
slightly less than even odds of fighting my way out in a pinch, given that these
fools typically knew nothing about powders, thrown weapons and the like. Not that I
had any intention of fighting, of course.
"What seems to be the problem?"
"Papers, please."
The leader of these clowns had the personality of a wet towel. I handed over my
papers, hoping like hell the forger I had worked with knew his business as well as
these blokes did. I did so with an air of wounded integrity with a scent of
supercilious.
"Sir, I've been given to understand that you've been asking around about an old
Arena team called 'Take the Fifth', is that correct?" He looked carefully at my
papers, even going so far as to hold them up to the candelabra.
"Well, I assure you, that is to say....b"
"How about we take this one back to the barracks, boss?" This from the shortest
of the three, whose flat face, thin lips and sneer seemed to invite a punch in the
mouth. "He looks like he might bounce higher than that last foreigner."
"No need," replied the Captain, handing me back my papers. "Vlad was just
heading out of Dullens, weren't you?"
"I assure you, Good Sir, I am fixing to do just that."
"Good, because we don't need your kind."
"What kind is that, Sir?"
"The kind that looks to make a lot of noise, chatting it up in the newsletters,
writing in creative content. You're obviously not from round here. We're all
numbers and fight experience here."
"As you wish."
I sketched a salute to the Captain and stepped my way gingerly past the guards
on a direct path to the door, stopping only to hand Shorty my copy of the Dullens
Daily, which he took before thinking about it and then hastily threw down. I think I
saw the Captain smirk, but I couldn't be sure.
So, I needed to tread carefully as I made my way into the city of Lapur. My
approach in Dullens had obviously not worked.

SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, LAPUR? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed
to see YEZURA win a fight and gain 16 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, TOADSMACKER beat
LITTLE THIN GOD and LITTLE THIN GOD lost 12 points. You're breakin' my heart. And
if variety is the spice of life, LAPUR may be getting bland, as ALI BOOMBAH YAY stays
top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you
this? You want to know what's new, don't you, LAPUR?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
What's the big D? THE TAKEN was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice?
Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was DEVIATION. Ha ha ha ha! Ooh, I'm frightfully
impressed, TOADSMACKER was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego
swell, sports fans. And we have BLOOD MAKES NOISE in a challenge, going down 15
points for the fight. Guess what? I thought BLOOD MAKES NOISE showed great skill
and promise when she beat RISUI. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for LAPUR's
morgue. More variety. A big yahoo goes out to NEKODA this turn, for revenging BLACK
SAMURAI's bloodfeud against TOURIST TRAPS' warrior DISNEY WORLD. Heh, heh, heh.
We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you
sooner that later?
What does the LAPUR arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that
before I leave the fine city of LAPUR. I feel much better now. I see the crowds are
getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide Clemens

I have included a spotlight found wandering around forlornly that I *think*
may be the one that tried to get in last time. If this belong elsewhere, let
me know and I'll move it. -- Ed.
Yezura -- Glad to oblige. -- Sandstorm
I have to take issue with Alarond the Scribe. If the Cardow Hunters are "the team to
beat," people would NOT be avoiding us, they'd be challenging. -- Jorja
Bak -- Around that corner there! Quick, I've got some horses nearby, and if we move
fast enough, we might CATCH him! -- Hunter
Shine -- Nope. Dawn is my time. Dawn to sunrise. -- Red Mare
Three-two, again! This is not so bad, and only ONE of the wins was over a standby.
Of course, one of the losses was to a standby, too. But the Dangerous Criminal is
hard to beat most days. -- Red Mare
Mister Twister -- Very tricky of you. I came straight on, that's my proper mode, you
know, and you sucked me into such a twisted and tangled path that I got dizzy and
fell down. -- Sandstorm
Blood Makes Noise -- I had not noticed that. Of course, YOU were making a lot of
noise, so maybe I wouldn't have heard anyway. -- Red Mare
Damn. -- Windglass
Bak Shieldborn -- You should have warned me that you lacked experience riding. Next
time, we can try the pursuit in a cart. -- Hunter
Rats, bah. -- Dances with Rain
