It was a sunny day, and the smells of the city brought back memories, fond and not so. Iaye! He reached for the rucksack being passed to him from the ship, noting the laborious effort of the one handing it to him. Shardin heaved the heavy back to his massive shoulders with little effort and smiled at his old manager, Kayel'be. "Been a long time, eh? Look at the city! So much has changed! It's been what, 12 years since last we were here?" "Aye, it has," Kayel'be replied. He added, "That look in your eye! You want to come back, don't you? To fight again on the sands." Kayel'be studied his friend's face. He had been eyeing a return to the arenas himself, and since running into his old charge a few months ago, the pull was even greater. If only he could anchor his return with his old friend. "I don't know, Kayel. Much has changed. When you first trained me, there was a different school of thought on what made a good Duelmaster. I have watched the fights from time to time since we left here, way back when. The gladiators nowadays are a different breed, their managers much wiser--" He cut his sentence short. "No offense." "Oh, none taken. I'll admit I was a bit green back in the day. But we held our own, eh?" They each smiled as they entered the city, proper. Kayel'be had been planning this reunion ever since he happened upon Shardin last spring down in Solven. Reestablishing contact with the other members of their old stable, Krynnians II, was much easier as they had remained here in Iaye. They were to meet them at an inn near the arena this evening. "New York Cabbie! That was his name. Who would name their son that?" Shardin bellowed as he finished his ale with one mighty swig. Seated around him were his old friends. Desseus and Baltek, from Dullens; Kortul, a local fellow; and Mycenae. Mycenae had never actually fought on the sands, though he did hang around a lot watching the Krynnians. He registered with the Commission after Barjin died. Barjin. That was a name Shardin hadn't heard in a long time. "Barjin," he said out loud. "May his soul rest in Ahringol's home!" He raised his tankard to toast his fallen friend, but the others looked at each other nervously. "Oh, Barjin is alive and well, my friend. In fact, he's down in Tricorus fighting in the arena there," Kayel'be laughed. "I started up a stable there, called From Beyond. He's quite successful actually, picking up right where he left off. In fact, it was his idea that I gather you all here, in Iaye. Shar, the rest of the boys want to give it a go again. They need a veteran to help train them. I will be busy shuttling between arenas. I am thinking of forming other groups in Riztab and Talcama as well. Will you...." "Well, if that squirt Barjin can come back, I guess I can't let him show me up, eh?" Shardin chuckled. "Count me in!" + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Andorians Abroad #14 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Not in Zuwayza: The change from the sunlit courtyard to the shuttered interior of the house was abrupt and extreme enough to blind Tankesh temporarily. He blinked impatiently, trying to clear his vision, and blundered after the old man as soon as he could see vague outlines. Furniture seemed to leap out and bite him in the shins. When his eyes finally adjusted to the shadowed interior of the building, he saw that he was in a long hallway with arches opening off both sides. The old man was just disappearing through one half way down on the left. Tankesh hurried after him. The room was bare and dark, lit only by a single candle, although the whitewashed walls made it seem brighter than it actually was. The old man was kneeling on the floor, which was of tile, white tile with black and red and gold ones inlaid in a series of concentric circles. It looked too much like a target for Tankesh's comfort; he supposed that was just his imagination. He hoped that's all it was. He squinted at the symbols the old man was drawing in some of the rings, but they meant nothing to him. Well, he didn't expect they would. Adie would probably recognize them, though. Could he remember enough detail to describe them to here when he got back? The old man stood up cautiously, one hand on the small of his back. He pointed with his stick of chalk to a spot in one of the outer rings. "Stand there, young man, and ask no questions. Pay attention and watch for the proper place to get off. This is simple, but not easy." The elf stood where he had been directed and watched the old man take his place in the center of the circle. "Proper place to get off?" "When the rim of the circle passes through your world," the old man said. Sliding his sleeves back on arms like withered sticks, he began to chant. It was, or it felt like, several minutes before he saw the arch to the hallway pass in front of him and realized that the circle was rotating. He glanced down, but there seemed to be no change in the tiles under his feet. Back up, as a corner of the room slid by, quickly followed by the next one. Definitely rotating, and picking up speed, too. "When the rim of the circle passes through my world," he muttered. "How will I know that, unless there happen to be landmarks in sight?" The old man didn't answer. Tankesh hadn't really expected him to. The walls blurred and vanished, to be replaced by a seascape with waves breaking on a beach of white sand and on rocks farther out. A wave sliding inward at the end of its course dampened the toe of one boot. Pleasant looking, but nothing familiar. Another blur. A forest of standing stones lit by bluish light from two moons, both near full, and a smell of fresh-spilled blood. A blur. A true forest, trees like columns reaching into a green darkness overhead, mist, and a smell of things growing and dying. It called to something in his elven heritage, but it was not where he needed to be. A blur that seemed to last longer than the others, there was a hesitation and a pulsing red light half way through it. Something they weren't going to stop for. Just as well, that light looked like it might be fire. A large vaulted chamber, the image wavering slightly and indistinct at any distance from his apparent location. Voices speaking akhadic. He tried to step out of the circle, but it was like moving through cold tar. The view began to blur, and he forced himself outward, throwing himself to the floor outside the circle in a dive. It seemed to take forever to fall, his motion slowed to the point where he wasn't even sure he was moving at all. And then there was a sort of soundless click, and the floor came up fast and hard, knocking the breath out of him as he hit and rolled. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 234): MISS STEP of LADIES IN WAITING (Crip, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Un-freak'n-believable! Egg Sherbert has the throne for one lousy turn, ONE DAMN TURN, and manages to melt all over the place. My beautiful purple robes are ruined, I tell you! Ruined! They've gone from being a lovely shade of purple (my favorite color) to some sort of rotten plum color. The humanity! It figures that I'd have to spend my time getting the robes back to respectability instead of drinking it up with my new stable mates. Speaking of Angus' latest recruits, I'd like to congratulate Sonic Taco on a wonderful showing over the past several turns. VERY nicely done young lady, I for one have been impressed. Let's see, let's see, what is happening in the arena these days. Oh yes, welcome back Krynnians II and Perlis Open. The more competition the better, I say! We seem to have a few out of work wrestlers working their way up our arena rankings as well. Fine, fine, great to have you, but let me ask you a question. Do you seriously need to wear those horrifying retro wrestling tights? And a kilt? Bloody hell, people. Get a tailor! Tell them you want current clothing...ask for purple. ::wink:: You can thank me later. Angus doesn't seem to have much to say this turn so I'm going to wrap things up. If I still wear the (hopefully hand washed) purple robes next turn it will be time for my invite to the Isle. I'll have Angus drop my stats for you all then. Good luck and try the purple punch! Purple Donkey Your Duelmaster despite the dirty robes SPY REPORT Greetings, Warriors of IAYE. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. Those betting on CARNIVAL lost their shirt, as CARNIVAL lost their fighting abilities: 0-0-0. Say what you will about blind luck and dirty fighting, but WRESTLMANIACS will tell you 23-21-3 is nothing to laugh at... WRESTLMANIACS had cause to celebrate, after OUTBACK JACK got 20 points by beating HOT TAMALE. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, CHERKO was winsome, after beating SONIC TACO and seeing her lose 11 points. PURPLE DONKEY successfully staved off a grab for the roses by TECK WEE SEAH of PERLIS OPEN. Does IAYE have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in IAYE is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works. And how sociable are IAYE's warriors? Come, let us see. Perhaps the warriors of RED DOG GANG should take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... Like a pup with its tail between its legs, TRIP OUT scurried away from RED DOG GANG. Oh, the shame! Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and TELA is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't GAMEHENDGE proud! Willing to win at any cost is TELA, who challenged COCO B. WARE, 10 points junior. Our sympathies, COCO B. WARE! I thought TELA showed great skill and promise when she was bested by COCO B. WARE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after life! HOT TAMALE of RED DOG GANG, possessing a sorry record of 8-9-0, lost hers last battle to OUTBACK JACK of WRESTLMANIACS. Young warriors, take note! Such is a failure's lot! Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor. Leave me now, you base fools! My fingers tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. IAYE, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Dragon's Blood Inn. While you were sleeping, an irksome rabble has entered the always fair Aruak City. Of course they fought alongside our warriors, most not so treasured, as all gladiators do. They drank with themselves, and slept with themselves. Whether they had masks, who cares. Warriors, don't be afraid. For years Aruak has been one of the safest cities in Ghea, and that custom has been continually cultivated, and will continue to be by those who have called it home for years and those who live, fight, and die by the same ethics. There is no contest, nor has there ever needed to be one for many years. A conflict of personalities has arisen, and the city has been 'invaded' by pests. Any rules that are annouced will be purely for the joy of the lemmings' own little world. Those who are being targeted have no interest in participating except to defend the integrity of an arena that is different from others. Whether you choose to come to Aruak, do it for your own reasons, not theirs. Competing in Aruak City has never been for the faint of heart or the weak willed. Combat is combat, wherever you go. Blood will flow as always, and now many innocents will be caught in the middle, but those who defend Aruak's traditions never target those who bring respect of Aruaki customs with them to our home. So ignore the private ranting announcement brought by the stuporous Frothingsloshers. If you choose Aruak City, do not choose it for an unsanctioned and bogus 'contest', choose it for the tradition. Choose it because Aruak is different.
