He had chosen a deserted section at the north end; the lights were all at the other end, across the river's mouth. There was no one to see him as he climbed the steps built into the wall of the waterfront. No one except, he hoped, his teammate Stonefish, although the Stonefish had his own prey to hunt this night. No, the Fish was there. Shark flicked moisture off his body with a twitch of powerful muscles and accepted the hooded robe the Fish held out to him. Ever courteous to a fellow predator, Shark asked, "How was your hunting tonight?" "Inconclusive." The Stonefish peered around in the darkness, then led the way down an alley. Over his shoulder, he said, "There WAS something there, the hairy little fishbait had that right. But it slipped away too quickly. Yours?" The Shark licked his thin lips. It was a land-animal's gesture, but he had come to appreciate it. "Very good." "You probably shouldn't have eaten another gladiator." There was no accusation in the comment, just thoughtful observation. "And these landsmen would probably prefer that you showed remorse." The Shark twitched a massive shoulder. "What is there to regret? Everyone dies. That is the way of life. And Limpette's death was clean. Quick. No one could ask more." "Tell that to the mammals." Shark flicked the comment away. He had more interesting news to impart. "How deep would you say the lake is, here at Zorpunt's harbor?" Stonefish shrugged. "I have no idea. Forty or fifty feet?" he guessed. "Certainly no more. The boats that come here only draw ten feet at the most. Well, perhaps twelve for the largest. So?" "Out there," the Shark gestured with one webbed hand, "no more than thirty yards out, the bottom drops away to...a depth I have not yet plumbed. But very deep. And the water changes from fresh to salt." He licked his lips again. "I like my meat with salt on it." "Some of the wizard's doing, you think?" "What else could it be?" The Shark walked in silence for several minutes. Neither he nor Stonefish were bothered by the darkness of the streets or the possibility of footpads. "The wizard. Great Khaldren, he calls himself. But he is a shark, too. I know another predator when I smell one. I wonder what game HE is hunting?" Tobir: Tomath Woodman, Convincian Hero of Tobir's arena, backed his chair up against the wall and shivered. When Jessaro Dra, the Mordant Escapee, brought him a mug of hot mulled wine, he accepted it gratefully and took a deep swallow. "There's something out there, Jess," he said. He shot an uneasy glance over his shoulder at the tavern's dark windows. "Something...weird." "I believe it!" Dra gestured toward the bar, where several other standbys and even Arenamaster Vasku stood drinking. "They've got an unbelievable story to tell about Monster Vegetables--" Woodman shook his head. "I heard that when I came in. This is something different. Something out in the lake." "A lake monster?" The other sat back, disappointed. "People are always talking about lake monsters, and how many are ever displayed on the shore?" "This is real," Woodman insisted. He shivered again. Dra noted that the man was soaking wet. True, it was raining, but Woodman was wetter than just from rain. "I was night-fishing, and something grabbed the boat, tipped it over. Tentacles--" Dra sighed. "ALL lake monsters have tentacles. It's a rule, almost." Woodman's bloodshot eyes met his. "You don't believe me." "Well, Tom, I know you don't MEAN to exaggerate, but--" "Wait till it comes ashore and then tell me there are no lake monsters." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Deep Waters #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Iaye: Kegrald Steelhand, employed by the Gladiatorial Commission as the Khalhums Dwarf of Iaye (he was actually from Murska, but jobs were hard to find these days), reached upward for another handhold. He knew there was another secure hold. Bird Rock was rock, and you couldn't fool a dwarf about rock. He slipped his fingers into the crevice he had sensed and began to ease his body upward. What he didn't know was whether he would be able to get high enough fast enough. You couldn't rush things, climbing a stone like this. Patience was just as important as knowledge, and more important than simple strength. But would the Thing in the water give him time? Probably not. Well, it stood to reason that it wouldn't, not if it was figuring on dwarf for dinner. A tentacle slapped the rock near his knee. He risked a glance downward, wishing he hadn't brought his shield, or that he could unbuckle it from his back without losing his grip on the stone, or that he hadn't come out here in the first place. No good wishing, that wouldn't get him anywhere. The Thing's hide glimmered like an oil slick, all treachery and peacock colors. Suckers fumbled at the surface of the stone. Kegrald inched a little higher, wincing as a tiny ledge crumbled under his too- hasty grip. At least the Thing would be having as much trouble with it as he was. Maybe more, because it didn't look like the kind of Thing that would understand rock. A water Thing, that's what this one was. Another tentacle touched his foot, and he kicked at it frantically. He wished he'd worn boots instead of these sandals, even though he couldn't have climbed in boots. But the touch of that slimy, boneless, moist, soft, rubbery, lascivious, lip- like tentacle was enough to set him shuddering, and you couldn't climb a vertical rock-face while shuddering. He lost one handhold and slithered downward again as his fingers tightened desperately on the other. A horn blew behind him, except that no horn he'd ever heard had made such a liquid, caressing sound as that, and besides, there was nothing behind him but the waters of the Trier. Not now that the Thing in the water had smashed his boat. He slewed his eyes sideways as far as they'd go, trying to see what was there. Nothing good, his luck wasn't running that way today. Could Things blow trumpets? A shell, as big across as the dwarf was tall, floated on the very surface of the water, or perhaps an inch or two above it. The Thing that stood on it was beautiful but totally alien, as tall as a man, or at least a woman, standing on a column of snakes or tentacles, body like a shining pearl, and no face at all that Kegrald could see. The sound was coming from it, but how was beyond the dwarf's understanding, since it had no horn, and no mouth to blow a horn anyway. But more tentacles rose from the water around it and closed in on Bird Rock. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Well, I must take my leave of all the good folk in Iaye. The call of greater political aspirations has my ear. It has been a great pleasure representing you in Iaye. Perhaps a little biographical dissertation is in order? I am, of course, of the "enhanced" Total Parry party. 11(+1)-18(+1)-8-13(+1)-21(+3)-9(+1)-10(+2) represents both my prenatal and current make up. I have been known to do normal damage behind the scenes but my tremendous endurance allows me to run a nasty filibuster. I finish DM @ 16-7-0 in the arena and an additional 20-12 in tournaments. I was satisfied to acquire three DM trophies (and just maybe one more). I will move on with adexes in decise (yes, indeed), parry, and defense and an expert in attack. I really do not know my favorite selection of weapon--but the SC/BS/LO combines have worked to a 7/105/4 resultant. Nothing else seemed to provide a crit or extra value hit. I'm penning this prior to receiving my faves, so I will guess that I am low/low/scimitar/decise. We shall see. Keep the faith and help make Iaye the best arena in the land. You may always call on me to help. Health! Humility! Honor! I remain, Senator Sedalia SPY REPORT You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf Modeen. I return to IAYE once again! Bein' on top is great while it lasts, THE BRIGADE. But how many friends do you have now? What's with THE RIVER? It actually beat LENPROS' DR. ROSENZWEIG, and walked away with 23 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at GAMEHENDGE while they watched THE RIVER clobber DR. ROSENZWEIG. He lost 34 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. IRON THRONE's hatred of LENPROS surfaced again as JET'E challenged IAYE's top dog. Try as he might, JET'E wasn't good enough at persuading SENATOR SEDALIA to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The most avoided team was THE WARLOCKS. In my day, no team with a 85-32-6 would scare me off! What's the problem, LENPROS? What do people see in VITHREN? His 5-8-0? IRON THRONE ain't talkin', but he's got 23 points. Keep challenging up 28 points, XIR, and I won't have to write about you much longer. WROTE THE BOOK always accepts those kind of challenges... I don't get it. XIR goes and challenges WROTE THE BOOK, way above him, but gets 1 points after he loses! Is this a new strategy? A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to go... Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf. Olaffighterwork and no play. Look around. Iaye is an island, and not a terribly large one. We have had an arena here for twenty years, with a steady trickle of graduates. What land do we have left that can be offered? The land here all BELONGS to people, and just because many of them, most if the truth is told, are not gladiators doesn't mean they have no right to retain their property. We can offer you salvage rights to a wreck recently discovered off the north shore; it seems to date back at least a hundred years, so there's no telling what might--or might not--be down there. Other than that, we don't have much on hand at the moment. -- Arenamaster Penrue Lady Protector Gissanniah -- You may see, in the note above to the senator, that we have a problem.
