Off the shore of Iaye:
Kegrald Steelhand was lying in the bottom of a small boat and staring at the
sky. Clear except for a few mare's-tails, he noted. He nerved himself to look
around, fearing to see tentacles. None. Just a small boat, with real people in it.
Humans, but right now, he was glad to see humans. Besides, dwarves weren't much for
boats. After a moment, he realized that these two were familiar: gladiators. Lord
Protector Senator Sedalia, and Lady Protector Gissanniah. "What happened?" he asked
hoarsely. Why should he be hoarse? He couldn't remember anything that...he couldn't
remember anything after hearing a horn blowing.
The two gladiators exchanged a glance. Senator Sedalia cleared his throat. "We
were hoping you could tell us that," he said.
"I was climbing Bird Rock--"
"Gull eggs aren't any better tasting than chicken eggs," Gissanniah said.
Kegrald stopped trying to sit up and made a gesture of embarrassment. "I had...
other reasons," he muttered.
"Later for the questions," Sedalia said. He hoisted the dwarf easily, bracing
him against a knee, and offered a pocket flask.
Arena rumors spoke very well of Senator Sedalia's pocket flask. Kegrald seized
it and drank. And coughed, because the flask's reputation had been well-earned.
Fortunately, as a dwarf he had a very hard head. "There were Things in the water,"
he said. "Tentacles and so on. The usual stuff, except for the horn. And the Thing
on the half-shell." He frowned. "Never heard of any Thing like that."
The boat rocked as Gissanniah shifted position impatiently. She opened her
mouth to ask a question but closed it again without speaking.
"Where abouts in the water?" Sedalia asked.
Kegrald looked around for Bird Rock, the coast, and the position of the sun, and
gestured. "There, where the surface is a funny color." He looked at the oily patch
of water where the ripples were all in the form of rings moving outward, and turned a
funny color himself. "Let's get to shore, and quickly!"

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
What's a poor Doctor to do? The price I have to pay to keep this seat is high?
Very high. Speaking of high, come on over to the office. I've got lots of stuff.
You'll feel good! (Plus I need the money to keep this seat.)
I think I might graduate soon. They say the big money is in ADM. All I need is
a few more skills and a very few more PP's and a bigger stash. I'm on my way to the
big time! Trust me.
So don't challenge me. Leave me alone to gather all the good stuff you ever
wanted. This chair is such a front. Just don't ask me for a cut.
Later,
The Great Doc
SPY REPORT
Much has changed in IAYE since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts
to many situations, as do all successful fighters. What's with VITHREN? He actually
beat GAMEHENDGE's WROTE THE BOOK, and walked away with 26 more points from the fight.
Major screwup at GAMEHENDGE. WROTE THE BOOK lost 17 points to VITHREN. Some new
strategies, perhaps? Maybe WROTE THE BOOK will provide more easy wins... Apparently
IAYE isn't filled with as many gutless wonders as I thought. The Dreaded Duelmaster
got 2 challenges this turn! See how the Duelmaster challenged THE WARLOCKS' CRAZY
FINGERS? That sort of initiative is how he got where he is now. Try as he might,
CRAZY FINGERS wasn't good enough at persuading DR. ROSENZWEIG to step down from the
Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I
hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was RED DOG GANG. Management must be dealin', as the boys at
LENPROS ain't reelin'! RED DOG GANG's mad! Keep challenging up 26 points, IJAZ, and
I won't have to write about you much longer. STEINBACH always accepts those kind of
challenges... Who knows what was running through IJAZ's head, but STEINBACH
rearranged it for him. How soon will IJAZ make a challenge like that again?
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? THE WARLOCKS' boys should be laying low. Now that THE
WARLOCKS' manager has gone and let RISHTEKE kill CANDYMAN unchallenged, THE WARLOCKS'
fighters are fair game. Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting younger every
day? To die so young, so gloriously!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

I guess it's time to bid Iaye farewell. Perseverance wins out in the end (or they
just get tired of seeing you). Senator, thanks, it was a great match. Lady Freeda,
perhaps we'll meet again in Andorak. Rei. -- Jet'e
Triple-X -- Why thank you. What a nice thing to say. If you had been such a nice
guy in the mat wars, I would have pulled for you more often! Of course, I ALWAYS was
pullin' for Stephanie. -- Admiral Iso
Rishteke -- Now THAT was funny! Thanks for our "laugh and cool statement of the
week". -- Paratoms
Arenamaster Penrue -- Well, just make sure your secretary does MY work first. --
Senator Sedalia, L.P.
Freeda -- I knew you were way better than me, but I just had to try. "Aspirations

Luisienne -- All I can say is well done, warrior! -- Sgt. Schmid

HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.
19 September 2005
I'd like to say hello to everyone I know that is still around after my being gone for
five years. Hope to see you all on the sands, and may your weapons strike true and
your shields protect you (except, of course, against MY warriors *grin*)!! -- Lord
Xiang, D2-101
5 October 2005
To those once of Willaf -- It's time to come back to the sands. I'm back,
exclusively at Willaf.... -- Kurd the Vivisectionist, Your Better
