Iaye:
Senator Sedalia sipped from the goblet, raised an eyebrow in surprised approval,
and leaned back. This little inn on the north shore of Iaye (better not tell the
name, or it would be overrun with trend-followers) was proving a valuable find in and
of itself, no need for sunken treasure. Comfortable chairs, an excellent cook, and a
really, really good cellar. Though by no means a hedonist, the senator could and did
appreciate the finer things in life.
But he could keep to the point, too. "Tell us again what you saw in the water,"
he said.
The Khalhums Dwarf emerged from his tankard (granting that ale should be
quaffed, this was a little over-enthusiastic, but then, the dwarf had had a severe
shock) and wiped the foam from his beard. He made a weary gesture. "Like I told you
already. I was halfway up Bird Rock--"
"Why?" Gissanniah asked.
"Eh?"
"Why were you climbing Bird Rock? It doesn't seem like something you'd do. A
chimney of rock out in the lake..." she shrugged. "Not much to attract a dwarf, I'd
think."
Kegrald frowned for several minutes. "Aye," he said finally. "You've the right
of that. I'd not have gone there except for...for...." He shook his head. "It's
gone! I had a reason, I know that, and it must have been a good one. But I can't
remember a blessed thing about it! Odd, that." His frown deepened, and he looked
uneasy.
"Magic," Gissanniah said.
"Unquestionably," Sedalia agreed. "What we can question is, why? Why Kegrald
Steelhand, why Bird Rock?" He looked at the dwarf, a classic example of his race,
but equally, in no way extraordinary. Did the standby gladiator have some special
vulnerability that made him easiest to manipulate, and any dwarf would otherwise have
done? Or did he have some special quality or knowledge himself? The senator tapped
a finger on the side of his jaw and nodded once. It was, almost certainly, because
of Kegrald's association with the arena. That business with the wizard in Zorpunt
had disclosed a problem: that those who served in the arena system, year after year,
became sensitized to certain spells. How else could a standby heal so quickly as to
fight twice in one day? Or be resurrected repeatedly, or...he shrugged. There were
probably more benefits than he knew, not being a standby himself. And he suspected
that there were certain oaths with magical force that Commission employees gave and
took. So...Kegrald had been targeted because he was vulnerable to a spell.
Gissanniah's voice drew him out of his thoughts.
"I wonder how close Bird Rock is to the ruins of Krael?" she mused.
"I thought Krael was in the strait between Iaye and the mainland," the dwarf
said.
"Any big city has outlying districts, and by all accounts Krael was big," the
woman answered.
Sedalia nodded. "Good point. And that business in Zorpunt is linked to Krael."
"Yes, but what's this got to do with monsters in the water?" Kegrald asked.
"Wizards are always summoning monsters," Gissanniah said. "It's like that's an
obligation for them. Besides, wizards don't need reasons." She got up and started
pacing from the fireplace to the rain-blinded window and back. "They're all insane
anyway."
"Insane, perhaps," Sedalia agreed, his eyes following her. "Power corrupts, not
only the morals but the judgment. But still, I feel that there would be a reason."
He smiled faintly. "Even if it is an unreasonable reason. And the rumors are that
he is very concerned about Krael."
"The wizard opened a gate in time to come forward from the past," Gissanniah
said. "What if he opened other kinds of gates? Or maybe just made it easier for
others to open 'em?" She stopped in front of the window and stared out.
"That still doesn't explain the monsters," Kegrald said stubbornly. "Or why
ME."
"No, but we'll find out," the senator said.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Since the pompous Dr Rosenzweig refused to write his DM Column, and since we
could not convince Lenpro to put on a skirt to write it, we have gathered to pen this
Duelmaster Column.
On behalf of Lenpros everywhere, and, indeed, The extensive Consortium folk, we
wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.
Health, Humility, Honor.
SPY REPORT
Hail IAYE! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your
deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as LENPROS is pushed out of
top team by THE A'S -- LOSERS II, who came from 2nd with a 2-3-0 this turn. The LOVE
LETTERS guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You
never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, NULN fought BIG MAC and
gained 24 points and contributed to I TRAINED THEM's 4-0-0. BIG MAC has lost to
NULN, falling 14 points, while helping make THE A'S -- LOSERS II a 2-3-0 turn. This
week's Duelmaster bout was between CRAZY FINGERS and our Duelmaster DR. ROSENZWEIG,
making a challenge. Defending his title for another turn, DR. ROSENZWEIG kept THE
WARLOCKS' warrior, CRAZY FINGERS, from claiming the throne. By the way, was that our
Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Dragon's Blood Inn?
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the CRYSTAL PALACE stable
was the most avoided team this turn. Come on IAYE, what are you afraid of? And
avoiding CRYSTAL PALACE more than any other team we find LOVE LETTERS. IAYE, are we
going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that
SGT. SCHMID from LENPROS was IAYE's most challenged warrior this turn. C-CUP of LOVE
LETTERS had better have a good reason for challenging down 9 points in a challenge
which she won. I thought C-CUP showed great skill and promise when she defeated
BIGFOOTS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies.
You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Well, I'm burning daylight here in IAYE and I've a long road ahead
of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in IAYE again, farewell-- Alarond the
