TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Lord Protector Admiral Iso stood on the end of Pier Two and looked at the
_Sunfish_. The packet was not a boat that inspired confidence. Oh, it was clean
enough, and there was no obvious lack of repair visible. But it had a certain air of
dishevelment that the Admiral distrusted. He was reminded yet again of Dr.
Rosenzweig's favorite maxim, that gift horses should ALWAYS be looked in the mouth--
and everywhere else. Ah, well, he supposed he was committed for THIS run, but
nothing said he had to maintain the connection after that. Which didn't prevent him
thinking bitter thoughts about Arenamaster Penrue.
A man came onto the deck from somewhere below. Medium height, stocky, with
cheerful, smiling face, but there was a look in his eye.... A fit man to be the
captain of this raffish vessel.
Iso stepped forward. "Collin Tarmanhian, I presume?"
"That's me." Tarmanhian smiled wider, showing, in Iso's opinion, too many
teeth. "Come to make the run to Ardivent, have ye?"
"Yes." Iso glanced out across the harbor, taking care not to linger on the
modest fishing boat operated by Lord Protector Goff of the Red Dog Gang. Goff had
agreed to shadow the _Sunfish_ on this run in case Tarmanhian had something really
nasty up his sleeve. In fact, when word had gotten around gladiatorial circles that
the Admiral intended to take this voyage, Goff had come forward with the warning and
the offer himself, though he wouldn't say anything definite against the _Sunfish_ or
its captain. Rumors and suspicions, no doubt. It was, Iso supposed, very proper of
Goff not to pass on unsubstantiated rumors, but Iso would have preferred to have
definite suspicions than this general feeling of unease. What was, what COULD
Tarmanhian be up to?
"Do you think we should have let Kegrald go off on his own?" Gissanniah asked.
Senator Sedalia raised an eyebrow. "Do you think we could have stopped him?"
Gissanniah shrugged and squinted into the rain, taking a half skip to keep in
step with her companion. After all, it was the senator who had the umbrella. "If he
was vulnerable once, he must still be, don't you think?"
"Yes, I do think it. But if we can think of that, so can he, and if he chooses
to take the risk again, who are we to stop him? The best government, you know, is
the one that governs least--just enough to keep the pork barrels full."
"Pork in barrels?"
"Salted, dear, salted. That, if I am not mistaken, is the Archive," he added,
pointing to a gloomy edifice ahead of them.
It was big, made of age-stained stone, girdled with pillars and roofed with
moss-covered slates, and it looked to Gissanniah like a giant mausoleum. "I could
actually believe that dates back to the days of Krael," she said.
"The building I don't care about, but I hope they have the records we need." He
marched toward the front door, prepared to argue them in and even show his senator's
pass if that was called for, though it was inapplicable here.
"Wait!" Gissanniah put a hand on his arm to hold him back, point to the side
with the other.
Sedalia peered in that direction. Something large and dark was gliding through
the rainy afternoon, skimming at least two feet above the muddy surface of the road.
"It's the Messenger Bird! I thought he'd left for the Isle!"
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, IAYE? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before?
Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, THE A'S -- LOSERS II, since I TRAINED
THEM took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. LOVE LETTERS turned
their 3-2-1 turn into a 2nd place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than
this, and you get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-0-0 is nice, but don't
get cocky, LENPROS, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course,
we're all terribly impressed to see C-CUP win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly.
Tsk, tsk, KUNG-FU MASTER beat STEINBACH and STEINBACH lost 14 points. You're
breakin' my heart. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as MAD MAX takes the
Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Wharf Rat,
humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From
IAYE's trash dumps?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
What's the big D? CRYSTAL PALACE was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily
livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like LENPROS avoided them the
most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. H. HATRACK
was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or
feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to RILLION of I TRAINED THEM
for challenging up by 18 to ENCHANTED. RILLION lost to get 73 points of recognition.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. I could say I saw this coming, but so
could anyone else. Anyway, this turn it came. THE WIND's 15-18-2 has earned it the
Dark Arena. Gee, GAMEHENDGE, ain't it past due for sending THE RIVER Dark Arena?
What took ol' '20-13-0' so long? Hope? Ha ha aha ha! Nipped in the bud, you might
say, was LUISIENNE of RED DOG GANG this turn. Course, I wouldn't say that, so much
as have a belly laugh. Heh heh. And now a passing thought on a warrior dying young
(ARCH MASTER of CRYSTAL PALACE): You had your chance and now you're dead. Oh
well... I can't say as I'm proud to find out that RED DOG GANG's PERROJO has killed
ARCH MASTER from CRYSTAL PALACE. I can say I wish CRYSTAL PALACE good luck in their
bloodfeud. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up
with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up
here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I must
leave now-- Snide Clemens

Dr. Rosenzwieg -- Can it be? My, my. You lost the DM crown to a better warrior?

P.S. It isn't LANDS, but we really, truly don't HAVE lands.
Manager of Gamehendge -- If you have an objection to the appearance of your gladiator
