On the Trier south of Iaye:

The _Sunfish_ was becalmed, rocking gently on the slightest of waves. The
captain, Collin Tarmanhian, appeared undisturbed and sat on a padded bench trailing a
line in the water.
Iso looked down at the sailor and forcibly restrained hard words. This casual
disregard for schedules was a clear demonstration that the _Sunfish's_ reputation for
unreliability was deserved. He would not tolerate such behavior in anyone under his
command, but Collin Tarmanhian was not under his command. And what was more, the
sailor was doing this deliberately to annoy. That showed in the insufferable smirk
he wasn't even trying to hide. Iso's thoughts about Arenamaster Penrue and his
substitute for "graduation lands" became darker with every revelation.
But he, Lord Protector Admiral Iso, would not stoop to a petty quarrel with this
lout, no, he wouldn't even acknowledge his annoyance. He simply nodded to the fellow
in passing and took up a position by the rail, raised his spyglass, and began to
study the shore. It was heavily forested, broken only by a few small fishing camps,
which, according to the charts Iso had studied, meant they were between Tobir and
Ardivent. And the shore was moving past them despite the slack sails. They must be
in the Ardivent Current, which swept southward along the coast of Alastari. It made
trade southward along the coast easy, though moving north was harder. The northbound
current followed the coast of Skaithvarn and was inconvenient for use by Alastarian
shipping.
So, the situation was both good and bad. Being in the Ardivent Current meant
that they did not need wind to keep going. But it also meant that without wind, they
would have difficulty breaking free of the current and heading to land when the time
came. Difficulty! Iso snorted. Without wind, it would be impossible. Well, they
could row, if they had oars, but they didn't. So...impossible. The main question
was, how long till the wind blew again?

Iaye:

The Messenger Bird coasted to a stop, feet dropping lightly to the muddy road.
     Senator Sedalia raised an eyebrow.
From under one dark wing, the messenger produced a scroll tube, handing it to
the senator without a word. Then it pivoted, thrust upward, and was gone in the
windy rain.
"That was a bird of dark omen," Gissanniah muttered. "You should throw that
scroll unopened into the sea, lest ill come of it."
"That isn't your usual mode of speech," Sedalia noted.
She blinked, then skipped again to keep up with his umbrella. "Ah...I think a
fit of prophesy came on me just then."
The senator raised both eyebrows. "Does this happen to you often?"
     "Never before now."
"And yet you knew what it was."
She shrugged and looked away, out into the rain. "It was obvious."
     "Not to me."
"I can't explain it, all right? I just know!" She lunged away suddenly,
vanishing behind the curtains of rain.
Senator Sedalia stared after her, frowning, for several seconds, then closed his
umbrella with a snap. The rain would ruin his suit, but you can't run with an open
umbrella, and he could see that Gissanniah was upset. That young lady needed someone
to look after her for a while. It was his duty to make sure she didn't come to grief
in her agitation. He had taken no more than two steps in pursuit when another form
emerged from the rain. "As much traffic here as the Grand Concourse on market day!"
he muttered.
"I'm glad I caught you!" A dapper man, neither old nor young, bowed quickly,
the dignity of his gesture not in the least impaired by the fact that his cloak was
soaking wet and hanging in heavy folds while his neatly trimmed beard dripped on his
shirt front. "Alvin Moss, the most Trustworthy of Scribes, at your service."
There was something in the way the Trustworthy Scribe's eyes shifted that was
disquieting, and the senator remembered that Kegrald the Dwarf's association with the
arena had made him vulnerable to certain magics. Might this other fellow have been
manipulated, also? His presence was inconvenient, at the very least. "I don't
believe I was in the market for your services, sir," Sedalia said. He stepped to the
side in order to go around the man.
Alvin Moss immediately moved to block him. "You need me, sir, indeed you do. I
can show you things in the Archive which no one else can find. And if your message
scroll," he pointed at the lacquered case Sedalia was still holding, "should prove to
be confusing, I am skilled in making such things clear." He moved a little closer,
crowding the senator back toward the edge of the street and the silent, shuttered
buildings that lined it.
Sedalia raised an eyebrow and blew out his mustache, then smiled grimly. Did
the Trustworthy Scribe think he could shove a SENATOR into a stone wall? Folly! Any
senator worthy of his pork barrel could stonewall with the best. He set his feet,
leaned forward slightly, and said, "No."

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. We now have a new top team for all of you guys to dogpile on. THE
A'S -- LOSERS II now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it. Coming
up with a solid 2-0-0 outing, GAMEHENDGE has advanced 3 places in the rankings.
Advancing in the rankings was THE WARLOCKS who went from last turn's 99-48-6, to this
week's record of 102-48-7. Hey everybody, watch out for EARTHQUAKE EXCUSE, who flew
up 19 points in the rankings after mashing AMBITIOUS GUARD like a melon. Keep your
eye on this beast. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands.
PERROJO lost to LEE and drops 11 points. Well, if ya don't shows up at the
laundromat, ya can'ts wash yer clothes. MAD MAX did not fight this week so his title
was forfeit. It's a proud day for the LOVE LETTERS stable, as their warrior,
TRIPLE-X, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. Can you believe they are paying me 10
gold to deliver this stuff?
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the IAYE arena. Did you hear
that THE A'S -- LOSERS II was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the
personal hygiene of THE A'S -- LOSERS II's warriors, I'm not surprised! For those of
you who like math, try this one: THE A'S -- LOSERS II + Weapons That go Boom = LOVE
LETTERS + Avoid City. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, ENCHANTED would
be president. Although it may be a contest it doesn't want to win.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Here's some advice: warriors
with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in IAYE have no sense
of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy Report.
Good luck in next week's fights. Hasta la bye-bye. (Loud choruses of 'Beat it, ya
bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster

Soultaker -- Congrats on getting Mad Max off to the Big Time. -- Lenpro

Stinger -- How stupid of you to try. You challenged ME? Well, thank you very much
for another easy win. -- Dr. Rosenzweig

Mapt -- I fought quite well, don't you think? To us victors go the spoils. -- Sgt
Schmid

Dr. Rosenzweig and Sgt Schmid -- I am disgusted with your arrogant attitudes. You
should both be placed in "Time Out". There will be changes to The Lenpros after The
Face. -- Lenpro

Crazy Fingers -- I really, really, really envy your 11-8-3-21-21-5-12 make up. Did I
say that I really, really...? -- Lenpro

Malaquar -- There is little room for hostility and aggression in "health, humility,
honor". -- Lenpro

All -- In case you wondered, Pastor Pentane, Chief Tomtom, and Lady Huntsman are
"resting" for The Face. All of us will return to action after Tempe. -- Lenpro and
The Lenpros

Unscathed -- Yes, well, that's a good thing to AIM at, but this time, you are
scathed. -- Perrojo
P.S. You could say that I scathed you with a scimitar. Very appropriate, eh?
P.P.S. Besides, golems shouldn't HAVE muttonchop whiskers. Unbecoming.

Rillion -- (wincing) He trained you well. But just the same, I don't want to share
your bathtub. Under the circumstances, the whole concept is very...aradian. And I'm
not. Different island entirely. -- Rishteke

Wrote the Book -- Oh, yeah? Well, who did your proofreading? This has got SOOO many
typos in it, I'm not laughing! And this paper...tsk! Cheap, acid-treated sawdust.
Won't last ten years, not even FIVE years if the sun hits it. Or rain! Gods, what
RAIN would do to this.... What, a fight? Why should we fight? Books are more
important. -- Bigfoots

Earthquake Excuse -- That's even better than the classic "the dog ate my homework"?
Or the perennial alternate "my little brother barfed on it." Besides, according to
the finest seismological minds, we aren't due for another "big one" here for three
hundred more years. Little ones, okay, but unless they result in tipping over a lit
kerosene lamp, they aren't going to be useful in the way of excuses. -- Nonni
P.S. I wonder if Mother O'Leary's cow was actually an earthquake?

TCW -- Future? As in, "Oh, you get to go to the Isle and spend the REST OF YOUR LIFE
fighting other gladiators." Being dead is a lot more interesting than that! You
meet the most amazing people. -- Ghost of Murgurod

Lord (I presume, nobody tells me these things) Protector Mad Max -- If you are truly
mad, then you don't want lands, do you? No, don't confuse me, I know that some
people say that wanting lands IS mad, but it isn't. Butt out, you kibitzers. The
most I can offer at the moment is a rock off the coast, about the same size as you
are, and home to some...birds. I don't know what kind, I'm not a bird-person. Noisy
birds. Incontinent birds. But then, all birds are like that, aren't they? --

Just a reminder to all you online type people. It is much appreciated if you send
your personals in PLAIN TEXT, rather than HTML or formatted text. HAL, in his
infinite wisdom, doesn't DO formatting, which means having to unsnarl your personal
ads from bunches of extraneous...stuff. So, if your e-mailer has a plain text
option, let it be your friend. -- Ed.
P.S. Sometimes it's the formatted text which makes ads go astray. Not often, but
sometimes.
