Iaye:
Sedalia raised an eyebrow at Alvin Moss and blew out his mustache, then smiled
grimly. Did this fool of a Trustworthy Scribe think he could shove a SENATOR into a
stone wall? Folly! Any senator worthy of his pork barrel could stonewall with the
best. Better than the best. A senator WAS the best. He set his feet, leaned
forward slightly, and said, "No."
Moss hesitated. He hadn't expected to hear a refusal, that was plain. Perhaps
too many people had trusted that so-honest-looking face in the past, eh? But a
senator learned not to trust blindly. "You need me," the Trustworthy Scribe
repeated, sounding lame and unsure. "I can show you things in the Archive--"
"I don't doubt it, son," the senator said, "but would they be things I wanted to
see? No, no, I thank you for your willingness to help, but...no. I'll do fine on my
own, boy. Just fine."
Moss opened his mouth for another protest or argument but did not have time to
utter it.
Somewhere in the middle distance, a woman cried out. To the senator's critical
ear, it was not a true scream, but some people, he knew, were embarrassed at the very
idea of creating such a commotion as a scream. But she was in trouble, right enough,
and he guessed it to be Gissanniah. Sedalia moved away from the wall, dislodging the
Trustworthy Scribe from his path with a solid, straight-from-the-shoulder blow. A
good senator knew when words were not enough, and the most distinguished senators, of
which Sedalia was one, did not hesitate to do what was needed. He observed Moss's
gape-mouthed collapse with satisfaction.
Then he stepped around the sprawled Scribe and hurried down the street. As he
went, he took note of his surroundings--senators missed very little that went on
around them. This was a bad place and a bad time. The buildings on this winding
street seemed mostly to be empty and rather decrepit. Surely unworthy of what must
have been a substantial neighborhood, or why was the Archive here? The street had
been paved once, there were still a few bricks visible, but it was now mostly a sea
of mud, distressing to the sensibilities and destructive to the footwear of a
fastidious man. And the clouds...were too heavy to be natural, pressing down and
turning the afternoon into a gloomy, ominous twilight. If the rain started up again,
it might actually be a relief, it might wring some of the choking dampness out of the
air.
But this was all peripheral to rushing down the street to the first turn,
pausing to peer around it--a senator did not rush blindly into an ambush, or he was
unworthy to be a senator! The wretched Moss could be heard lurching along behind
him, cursing and splashing, not a stealthy scribe, however trustworthy he might (or
might not) be.
The woman cried out again, closer to a scream this time. Sedalia spotted her,
backed into the mouth of an alley by three dacoits or thugs or whatever the proper
term was here. And a fourth was heaving (puffing and grunting with his effort, also)
into sight at the other end of the visible stretch of crooked street. In this light
it was hard to be sure, but Sedalia thought it was Gissanniah.
Senator Sedalia strode to her aid, raising his ebony cane and giving a quick
twist to the barrel of it, which came off in his hand baring the sword-blade. Light
flowed and flashed along the blade, more than seemed possible in this gloomy
afternoon. "Ho, varlets!"
One of the dacoits, or, as it might be, thugs, jumped back and looked toward
him, yelling in alarm. The man who had been approaching from the other direction
reached the group just then, colliding with the dacoit. They fell against a
building, struggling with each other. A second varlet dodged around Gissanniah--it
was she and no other--and disappeared down the alley.
Sedalia saw with a shock that the tallest one, who still had hold of her, was
the Ruthless Jaywalker, and he was holding a naked blade in his hand with obviously
murderous intent. Was there no end to the involvement of arena personnel in this
matter? He lunged at the Jaywalker, who pivoted aside with a grace unusual in one so
tall (but he was a Fratsfan, and that elven blood would tell), parrying with
Gissanniah. She was bleeding from a blow to the head and seemed half-dazed, unable
to struggle properly, so that the senator had to throw himself to the side in order
to avoid skewering her.
"Varlet!" he panted, for he was not a young man, nor an active one. "Villain!
Unhand that woman!"
The Jaywalker bared his teeth. "You don't frighten me, old man!" He dragged
Gissanniah in front of him as a shield. "Do your worst!"
The gladiatress was beginning to struggle, but the Jaywalker had an arm across
her throat now and applied enough pressure to cut off her air. Her eyes flicked past
the senator and she gasped, "Behind you!"
Senator Sedalia threw himself to the side again, coming up against the wall of
the alley, which felt very good at his back. As he did so, one of the varlets who
had run off and, apparently, then come back, lurched past and crashed into Gissanniah
and her captor, knocking both of them down. There was a rolling tangle of limbs, a
lot of thrashing around, and some unimaginative cursing. The Trustworthy Scribe,
Alvin Moss, rushed up and stabbed at the pile of bodies, killing the varlet on top.
"You're a fool!" Sedalia roared. He shoved Moss aside just as Gissanniah, who
had fallen on top of the Jaywalker and knocked the breath out of him, rolled over and
came to her feet, dragging her own sword from its sheath.
But the Jaywalker rolled the other way, and a long arm appeared out of thin air,
grabbed him by the collar, and hauled him...somewhere else.
Meanwhile, the struggle on the other side of the alley came to an end, with a
varlet collapsing in a bloody shambles at the feet of M. Teleskoi Chardinee.
"What is going on here?" Sedalia demanded. When Moss coughed and opened his
mouth to reply, the senator added, "I will have the truth, with no whitewash or
cover-up! Nothing but the truth!"
"It's a plot, of course," the Chardinee said before Moss could speak. "Our
suspicions were aroused some time ago, but we have only recently begun to unravel a
few of the threads." He bowed slightly to the senator and Gissanniah. "The
Chardinee Society has concluded that our best hope lies with you, and certain other
gladiators elsewhere who are combating the menace."
"That old story!" The Trustworthy Scribe sneered. "Like your 'Chardinee
Society' wasn't just another dirty little cult! You--"
"You," Teleskoi answered, "are a jealous little fool. You have no idea what the
Society is, does, or means, and you never will, for your mind is too small." The
Chardinee turned his shoulder to his fellow standby and faced the two gladiators. "I
have certain information to share," he said, "and a request to make of you. Let us
adjourn to the nearest pub to discuss the matter."

SPY REPORT
Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in IAYE.
Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! Say good-bye to
THE WARLOCKS, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the CRYSTAL PALACE
stable. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at
THE WARLOCKS, who went down to 1st from 5th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid
3-2-0 outing, CRYSTAL PALACE has advanced 4 places in the rankings. Advancing in the
rankings was LENPROS who went from last turn's 859-569-25, to this week's record of
862-570-25. Hey everybody, watch out for SGT. SCHMID, who flew up 19 points in the
rankings after mashing OUTBACK JACK like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya
know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. OUTBACK JACK was bested by
SGT. SCHMID and drops 14 points. Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but
bloody knuckles was THE A'S -- LOSERS II's WALT WEISS, who was turned away from the
Duelmastership by ENCHANTED. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver
this stuff?
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the IAYE arena. Here's a
song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad THE WARLOCKS? Big bad THE WARLOCKS. Big
bad THE WARLOCKS. IAYE's afraid of the big bad THE WARLOCKS. Tra la la la la! For
those of you who like math, try this one: THE WARLOCKS + Weapons That go Boom =
LENPROS + Avoid City. Well just about everybody wants a piece of BIGFOOTS, who was
this week's most challenged warrior. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior,
RAINY RAIN went after ON THE MOON, who was higher by 24 points. Well, when the dust
settled, RAINY RAIN defeated ON THE MOON.
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! In the 'Oops, What Have I Done?' category, SUNLIGHT
SPLATRZ was mashed by HITHELLIENE, who let SUNLIGHT SPLATRZ know that killing members
of RED DOG GANG is a no-no. Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper time
is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in IAYE have no sense
of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy Report.
Good luck in next week's fights. Its been fun, and I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos).
Now that I've got you worked up for Snide Clemens, I'll be leaving-- The Unknown
Spymaster

NEW TEAMS IN THE TEMPORARY TOURNAMENT ARENAS (DM 81/83)
Please note that all new teams created at the Face-to-Face were temporarily placed
in a temporary Tournament Arena, DM 81 or DM 83. If you requested that your team be
placed in a specific arena, it has already transferred to that arena. Any teams not
transferred out of DM 81 and DM 83 by May 1st will be deleted. If you have questions
about any of your teams, please contact Customer Service. -- RSI
