Gissanniah couldn't remember how many years ago that had been. A little over four hundred, she thought. After her teammate Muttly had adventured in drowned Krael, he had looked up the history, and he talked about it sometimes. At tedious length, sometimes, though now that she was probably going there herself, she wished she'd paid more attention. It was almost as cold inside as outside, though neither wet nor windy. Probably the place wasn't heated. It wasn't lighted well, either. There were chandeliers and brackets for lamps, but what light the interior received came from skylights, and on this dark and stormy day, there wasn't much light in the sky. Enough, though, to see that the place was clean. It would have been easy for the staff to leave it full of dust and cobwebs. How many people came here, after all? Gissanniah and Senator Sedalia were following one of the archivists (there were three) along a hall on the upper floor, to the room he said contained 'records from and about Krael'. She leaned close to the senator and whispered, "What do we expect to learn here?" Sedalia patted her hand. "The physical layout of the old city, for a start," he said. "Then...I would like to see where, in a physical sense, power was concentrated. Where the wizards had their towers. That may lead us to the points that are important to Khaldren. Destroy them, and we can perhaps hope to destroy HIM, you see." She nodded, but she didn't see. Oh, she saw a grand outline, but not how any of it could be accomplished. Was there going to be a map with a lot of stars on it labeled "here there be wizards"? Well, maybe there would be. What did she know? This was why the senator was in charge, and not her. They turned a corner, and the archivist cried out in horror. A door farther down was open, and the sound of tearing and smashing came from it. With a cry of "No, NO, the BOOKS!" the archivist rushed ahead. The two gladiators rushed after him. Gissanniah drew her sword. Senator Sedalia picked up the bucket catching drips under one of the skylights in the hall; it was nearly full. The room was long and high-ceilinged, lined with shelves and cabinets, and a table stood in the center. Alvin Moss, the Trustworthy Scribe from Iaye arena, was pulling books and scrolls off one of the shelves and dumping them carelessly onto the table. And he had a jug of lamp oil and a fire-striking set all laid out neatly. The Trustworthy Arsonist? Gissanniah lunged for him, but the man snatched up a wooden chair to use as a shield, parrying her blow and then knocking her sprawling as he swung his furniture. She rolled and came back to her feet, glancing around quickly to locate the other two people in the room, and the furnishings that might trip her. Something didn't fit the pattern. She knew immediately that Moss was playing some trick on them, that his carefully arranged arson kit was just...stage setting. Where was the real show, then? She looked around carefully. The room was dim, not much light coming from the rain-curtained windows. No skylight, of course, it was almost impossible to stop skylights from leaking, and you couldn't have them leaking on books. But at the far end, from behind one of the out-reaching sets of shelves, there was another light, reddish and unsteady. Fire! She dropped her sword and snatched the water bucket from the senator. It was heavy, but she scarcely noticed. Behind her Sedalia and Moss were shouting. She didn't listen. Around the corner, bucket raised to throw out the water. The scene that met her eyes was enough to make her pause. The Ruthless Jaywalker stood poised, a torch in one hand and a bloody dagger in the other. Sprawled in a pool of copper-colored blood on the floor was Something that had been approximately human in shape before the Jaywalker's butchery; a cloud of something dark was taking shape above the steaming entrails. Gissanniah hurled water and bucket together and reached for her sword. Which was not at her belt. She remembered dropping it back near the center of the room, but no time to go get it now. She drew her dagger and faced the Ruthless Jaywalker. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 267): INOCHI of YAKUZA (Sensei Jan, mgr.) Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. ROWDY RODDY caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested WROTE THE BOOK and was awarded 18 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, PASTOR PENTANE put down RISHTEKE, causing him to lose 14 points of recognition in the process. Who here was not present for the title fight this week as STONE COLD boldly challenged STEINBACH in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? Not for nothing has STEINBACH in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his combat skill yet again. Would you believe that over half of the old women in IAYE seem to feel that they could fight better than you gladiators? I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. IAYE, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy guilds is LENPROS, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of WRESTLMANIACS last week. Busy avoiding LENPROS? Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after OUTBACK JACK. Watch your back! What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his foe's mortality? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME STEINBACH 4473 22 21 0 132 THE A'S -- LOSERS II (431) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PASTOR PENTANE 4519 12 10 1 106 LENPROS (145) STONE COLD 4315 8 2 0 92 WRESTLMANIACS (73) -DR. The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a 'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be posted.
