Iaye:

"Now," Senator Sedalia said, "to work."
Gissanniah looked blank. "Uh...what, exactly, did you have in mind?"
"We must find maps and records of Krael and discover what were the most
important parts of that city--to magicians, you understand, not to normal people. It
is my contention," the senator said, "that somewhere in Krael of Today there is some
crucial to Khaldren's power. Destroy that link, and Khaldren will fall, too. But
first, we must identify it."
Gissanniah examined the Kraelian Room of the Archive, turning in place to take
in all of it. True, it was only one room, but...you can get a lot of books and
scrolls into one room, if you pay attention. Somebody had been paying attention
here. "It could take days...if we get lucky."
"No, my dear, we are ALREADY lucky." The senator pulled a small scroll from
inside his jacket, where it had been kept nearly dry even through the deluge outside.
She recognized it as the scroll that Messenger Bird had brought; not long ago,
actually, though it seemed like days. "This," Sedalia said, "is our clew." He
unrolled it with a flourish and held it up between his hands.
The inside surface of the scroll was marked with irregular lines in black and
several inscriptions, written in small crabbed characters the gladiatress couldn't
read, in red. She looked at the senator for enlightenment. "It's a map." She felt
the parchment. "An old one. What of?"
"Krael That Was, I think. But that is what the Archive must tell us, and it is
my hope that our Archivist," he looked at the librarian expectantly, "can tell us."
The Archivist who had guided them to this room was sitting on a chair against
the wall beside the door. He was pale-faced and staring, probably unfamiliar with
and shocked by the violence that had taken place in this room. If he was paying
attention to Sedalia's words, he gave no sign.
The senator stepped closer to him and waved the map in front of his face. "Can
you read these inscriptions?" he asked. "WILL you read them?"
The Archivist came into focus abruptly and took the map. "Where did you get
this?"
"It was given me. I will be glad," the senator said, "to donate it to the
Archive...AFTER I am done with it. What does it say?"
"What does it SAY?" Now the man looked blank, as though it had never occurred
to him that anyone might want to READ one of the old records.
"We're doing...research," the senator said. Yes, that was the approach here, a
frame of reference that the Archivist recognized. "We need to know what this map
purports to show, and what it says, and then we will need to do further research
based on what you can tell us about this map."
"Oh...research. Yes, I can help with that." He took the map and studied it for
a moment. "This is an incredible find! Were there any more where this was?"
"No, I don't believe there were. What is it?"
"The inscriptions are in Old Kraelian, and phrased very obscurely." The
Archivist frowned, moved to the reading table, and sat down, spreading out the map.
He noticed the bloodstains which someone had recently left there only to make sure
that the map was not marked by them. "The indications are that was intended to be a
map of Krael, but it is not. I have seen many maps of the old city." His finger
traced one of the wandering black lines. "No streets in the city followed such a
path. It was mostly razed in the year 53 of the New Era, you know, and rebuilt to a
design by the Royal Architect in 54. Very grand and orderly-- Wait, I'll show you!"
He leaped to his feet and darted down the shelves, unlocked a cabinet, and drew out
another scroll, much larger, which he brought back and unrolled on the table.
The others leaned over it to look. It was indeed orderly, a complex pattern of
straight lines and curves, open plazas and towers.
"This," Old Doc Circ said, tapping the street-plan, "is a Cueballistic design
intended to concentrate power. The whole city of Krael must have served to focus the
powers of her magicians. An evil thing."
"Don't go sneaking up on me like that, you old quack," Sedalia snapped turning
to glare at his teammate. "And, why would this be an evil thing?"
"Because no magician should have access to powers on that scale," the physician-
alchemist answered. "Power corrupts, the greater the power, the greater the danger.
The saving grace of the whole business of magic has been that so great a power will
destroy the magician who attempts to wield it before he can destroy the world with
it. But with THIS...!"
"Do you think that Khaldren knows about this and is using it, then?" Gissanniah
asked.
     "Yes."
"Then how do we destroy it?" she asked. "Do we have to raze the ruins
entirely?"
"No, it would do no good." Circ leaned over the map, then picked up the
Messenger Bird's parchment and laid it over the street-plan. He pulled a small
crystal bottle from one pocket of his frock coat and tapped a few drops of fluid onto
the Bird's parchment. There was a sort of shimmer, and a smell of fried onions, and
the parchment became translucent and faintly shiny, allowing them to see through it
to the street-plan below. He adjusted the placement of one relative to the other
slightly and made a there-you-have-it gesture.
The black lines still wandered without apparent reason, but each of the
inscriptions in red was now over a plaza or tower, or in a few cases lined up with a
major boulevard.
"This must be important," Sedalia mused. "But unless we can translate the
captions...."
"I can transliterate them into modern script for you," the Archivist said. "But
I have no idea what they mean. Well, some I could translate, not that I see it would
do any good. They're...poetry or something. They don't make any kind of sense, even
now."
"One moment," Circ said. He pulled out what appeared to be a snuffbox, removed
a pinch of powder from it, and blew it over the maps. There was another shimmer.
The lines from the street-plan copied themselves onto the scroll with the
inscription, which lost its shine and translucency. "Now, write on here--
transliterations of everything, and translations where you can. Carefully, mind you!
The treatments I have used slightly weaken the parchment itself."
"Very clever," Sedalia said, "but what are we to DO with this information,
Circ?"
"Ever the man of action, eh? I don't suppose we'll have to destroy all the
ruins of Krael," Circ said, "or that it would do any good if we could. The power is
in the pattern, you see. Merely destroying the buildings would not change the
PATTERN." He sighed heavily. "I don't know what we can do, Sedalia. But this must
be, in some way, a key for us."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the special blessing
that the gods bestowed upon me, and thereby on all the congregation. Each of you
share in that honor of Duelmaster. Each of you earned and are entitled to it. Your
tithing, penance, and prayers have been answered. Amen.
As you walk into the world today, hold your head high, but remember that good
things are given to those who live the life of health, humility, and honor. Let us
all work diligently to earn such continued blessings from the gods. Amen.
Go in peace, my Brothers and Sisters. Go in peace.
               Pastor Pentane

                                      SPY REPORT

So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. We now have a new top team for all of you guys
to dogpile on. LENPROS now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it.
Hey everybody, watch out for CHIEF TOMTOM, who flew up 19 points in the rankings
after mashing TALKIN' CAMEL WALK like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And
falling like a basher in the top ten was SNOWY SNOW, who dropped 13 points after a
disappointing (to say the least) bout with THE HITMAN. Our battling duelmaster
PASTOR PENTANE has managed to hold the title, fending off WALT WEISS' none too subtle
advances. Better luck next time, THE A'S -- LOSERS II. Advice to bashers--never
force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the IAYE arena. Did you hear
that CRYSTAL PALACE was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal
hygiene of CRYSTAL PALACE's warriors, I'm not surprised! And you guys like to boo
me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause LENPROS beats feet every time CRYSTAL
PALACE smiles at them. Try farming, eh? And who is this STEINBACH you ask, with 114
points and a 23-22-0 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell!
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Ask not the elves for counsel, for they
will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh?
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in IAYE have no sense
of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some
tracks. And remember, you can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos),
oh, you've heard that one already!-- The Unknown Spymaster

P.S. And thus, highly suspicious.

Lady Huntsman -- But lady orcs are so, well, there's so much of them, in all the
right places. A man notices these things. -- Bigfoots
P.S. And don't tell me that you've never noticed how, ahem, the male orcs are, too!

Chief Tomtom -- For dancing? I'll dance with anybody. Even dwarves. -- Bigfoots
P.S. I say "even" dwarves, because I didn't know that dwarves went in for stomp
dancing and stuff like that.

Pastor Pentane -- Then why didn't you write a column? -- Rishteke
P.S. Oops, sorry, not you last time. We are having a problem with short-term
attention spans here at the Red Dogs' House.

Lord Protector Steinbach -- You don't get any lands, which should not come as a
surprise, given your team's name and character. But we WILL wish you a safe journey
to the mainland. In fact, we'll even go so far as to subsidize you taking the LONG
route to the mainland, clear up to Amen-Tei, so you can avoid the dangers of passing
near Krael. -- Arenamaster Penrue

A few notes about e-mailed personals:

You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e-
mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on
the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit
something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a
receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination
any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body
of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to
make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see
that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather
simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name
or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti
appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that
may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes
things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all.
If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy
writing! -- Ed.

We of the Desolate Empire Alliance want to welcome two managers to our fold. Kon of
the Empire Rising, and Osiris! May they be blessed with the blood of their enemies,
and give no quarter in War! -- Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire

To all those lookin' for some easy pickins: I, Elfwine, manager of The Shallowship,
the most feared team in all of Jhelum, invite all who seek wide open spaces for pubs
and other such establishments of limited debauchery, to visit this deserted city and
help me clear up some of the dust. I'm just about ready to have my guys face off
against each other to get some new action. Guess I'd better join a tournament or
something...hmmmm, there's a thought.
