"Destroy the pattern formed by the streets, you mean?" Gissanniah asked.
"Well...the pattern of which the streets are the outward image, perhaps. It
really needs a magician to handle this to best advantage," Old Doc Circ said.
"If you're going to suggest getting old Fandil in on this--" Sedalia began in a
growl.
"Not possible," Circ answered. "He's out of town. Otherwise, Fandil would be
an EXCELLENT choice for this mission. He understands these things, whereas I can
only guess." The alchemist shook his head. "The world is vast and full of
complexity, and no mortal--or immortal--mind can encompass all of it. In my field, I
am without equal, but out of my field," Circ shrugged, "I am guessing.
Intelligently, mind you, but guessing."
Sedalia frowned at his teammate. How annoying to believe that Circ was correct.
"Guess--intelligently, if you will--what we should DO then," he said.
The old alchemist tapped the map thoughtfully, fingers drumming softly, then
nodded once. "The pattern formed by the streets, plazas, and great buildings is one
of significance. Yes. This is fact. But not one that can be destroyed by simply
destroying the, let us call them, overt structures. This I think is correct. But!
At some points, probably those indicated by the inscriptions on this map, there must
be material things, devices, whatever, that...hmm. Call it that they bridle the
forces focused here. If we can destroy--"
     "Or just alter?" Gissanniah suggested.
"Not enough knowledge," Circ said. "If we can destroy these keys, we might then
have disrupted the pattern of power to the point where Khaldren can no longer use
it."
"And unless I miss my guess, be destroyed ourselves in the process," Sedalia
growled. "Not that I see us having a choice. Khaldren's power must be broken, and
Krael sunken again. Submerged again? I am not fully familiar with the proper
apocalyptic terminology."
"Sunken, submerged, whatever, who cares about the words?" Gissanniah asked. "If
we break a pattern that's controlling that much power, there won't be much left to
get wet."
     "Probably true," Circ agreed.
"Depressing thought." Sedalia sighed, shaking his head. "There is much of
value that could be learned by an examination of the ruins--"
"And much unavoidable risk to which the examiners would be exposed. The whole
site is a trap, Sedalia. You should realize that!"
"I do realize it, you quack! But that doesn't mean I have to like it." The
senator paused for long enough to master his passion. "It would appear that our
immediate course is to enter Krael and discover some of these material keys that will
have to be destroyed. Yes? Or no?"
"Yes, obviously. But I wish Fandil were available, I really do."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Short and sweet from the pulpit....

Your pastor was born mode 9-13-8-17-21-9-7 and cursed with little damage. Maturing
to 11-14-8-17-21-9-8 (who knows why?) upped me to normal damage and little else
worthwhile.

Guessing my favorites, other than "Amen" would provide something like high--low--
longsword.

I am "outta here", and glad of it. There are more to preach to in this big bad
world.

Good luck to all. Amen
          Lord Protector Pastor Pentane

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of IAYE! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. BIG MAC caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested C-CUP and was awarded 19 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, NOBLE ASSASSIN put down
TRIPLE-X, causing her to lose 24 points of recognition in the process. Most watched
of the fights this week, the spotlight was on ENCHANTED as it bore arms against the
challenge of reigning Duelmaster PASTOR PENTANE. Not for nothing has PASTOR PENTANE
in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his
combat skill yet again. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has
gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. IAYE, city of gladiators! Mighty
among the names of thy guilds is CRYSTAL PALACE, a guild shunned and avoided by many
in the weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard
pressed to find any of WRESTLMANIACS last week. Busy avoiding CRYSTAL PALACE? Loose
talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many
fighters are after WROTE THE BOOK. Watch your back!
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and
assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a
different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Lord Protector Pastor Pentane -- I advise you to get clear of this island quickly, as
it may be Doomed. Who knows what the Kraelians may do when confronted with BOTH
Senator Sedalia and Old Doc Circ? -- Arenamaster Penrue
P.S. Congratulations.

To all those lookin' for some easy pickins: I, Elfwine, manager of The Shallowship,
the most feared team in all of Jhelum, invite all who seek wide open spaces for pubs
and other such establishments of limited debauchery, to visit this deserted city and
help me clear up some of the dust. I'm just about ready to have my guys face off
against each other to get some new action. Guess I'd better join a tournament or
something...hmmmm, there's a thought.

All -- I've seen what's on the forum. So I'm prey, am I, Max. You and all your
devious buddies will become my prey, even those I thought okay. I don't have to
explain anything I do, much like yourselves so bring it on. Feel free to come over
to 31 for a thrashing. Oh, by the way, I am also in a new alliance. They tend to
share my sentiments about the VC. If they follow me or not, we will see; I'm not at
liberty to talk for them. The VC may be on their last stand!!!! -- Blackstorm
