The three gladiators, lord (or lady) protectors all, stood on the high shore of
Iaye and looked toward the ruins of Krael, currently visible less than a mile away
across what remained of the strait between the island of Iaye and the peninsula that
had once held Point.
"We'll have to go out in a boat," Gissanniah said, dread in her voice.
"Certainly we shall have to do so," Old Doc Circ agreed. "How is this bad?"
The young woman's eyes flicked toward Bird Rock, which stood between Iaye and
the ruins, just out of the direct line. "There were monsters...."
"So there were," Senator Sedalia said. "In the water near the Rock. And I
wonder why?"
"Magicians always have monsters. It's in the Handbook," Old Doc Circ said.
"Granted, but why THERE?" Sedalia squinted at the water and the irregular pile
of Bird Rock.
"The monster was over there, by the rock?" Circ asked. "How very ODD. Monsters
are generally summoned to protect things, and that Rock, while a curious geological
specimen and home to many birds, is not...."
"So some magician set up that monster out of sheer bloody-mindedness," Sedalia
said. "Things aren't always tidy and logical--as YOU should know, you old quack."
The alchemist smiled in a superior and maddening way, until Gissanniah stepped
on his foot. Then he said, "Monster summoning is not easy, nor is it without risks.
Only the most jejune magicians summon them without a good reason. It might be of use
to us to know what that reason was."
"There's a tunnel." The voice was deep, gravelly, and behind them. All three
turned to look. It was Kegrald Steelhand, the Khalhums Dwarf of Iaye. "That's why I
was at the Bird Rock before," he said. "I've heard about the tunnel for years, and I
wanted to see it." He shrugged. "I picked a bad time."
"A tunnel." The senator studied the dwarf as he might a strange flower.
The senator's expression might have been a corkscrew confronting a cork. The
dwarf rushed into explanation. "It's a dwarven tunnel. Very old, a classic piece of
work because the need to hold the lake at bay. It's in all the textbooks! I wanted
to see it."
"Quite so, entirely understandable," Old Doc Circ murmured. "Naturaly you would
want to see it. But...it does seem an ODD place for a dwarven tunnel."
Unaware, or perhaps not caring, that he was being pumped by a pair of experts,
Kegrald rushed on with explanations. "Terrible! Out there in the water--!" He
shuddered. "Mind you, there wasn't so much lake back then, because it was before
Krael sank. It was a special commission from the King of Krael." The dwarf's dark
brows came down in a scowl. "And it did NOT cause the collapse. The King's heir
tried to get out of paying for the work, because the city sank. But that wasn't OUR
doing."
"Ah! This was done shortly before the catasrophe, then?" Circ asked.
"Yes, but it was NOT responsible for--"
"We believe you," Sedalia said. "Where does the tunnel go, or why was it wanted
in the first place?"
The dwarf looked at him blankly. "What difference does that make? The tunnel
is a work of great technical skill, innovative in its day. It--"
"But the King of Krael did not, I feel sure, commission the dwarves of Khalhums
to produce a technical masterpiece," Circ said. "It seems far more likely that he
commissioned a way of moving secretly from one place to another. What places did or
does the tunnel connect?"
"How should I know?"
Sedalia growled a little, then sighed. "We'll have to explore it," he said.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
I have very little to say. I arrived. I observed. I operated. That is my
version of "veni; vidi; vici". (I came. I saw. I conquered.---for you uneducateds
out there.)
Another Duelmaster crown. Sixth. Ho hum. What else could I add?

SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in IAYE this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there
are sorrows to drown for GAMEHENDGE, whose 1-1-0 this turn dropped them by 5 into
10th. RANDOM stable has parlayed this turn's 2-0-0 into a 4 space move up the
rankings. This brings them up to 5th place. Good work, guys! The WRESTLMANIACS
guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know
where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, MAPT fought ON THE MOON and gained
19 points and contributed to RANDOM's 2-0-0. ON THE MOON has lost to MAPT, falling
18 points, while helping make THE WARLOCKS a 1-2-0 turn. And not without some honor,
TRIPLE-X now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of IAYE. By the way, was that
our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Dragon's Blood
Inn?
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the THE A'S -- LOSERS II
stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on IAYE, what are you afraid of?
And avoiding THE A'S -- LOSERS II more than any other team we find LENPROS. IAYE,
are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior
this turn was RED DOG GANG's warrior RISHTEKE. More fighters challenged him than
challenged the Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, GADGET from RESCUE RANGERS II
challenged up 23 points to fight BIGFOOTS from the RED DOG GANG stable. GADGET
perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he beat BIGFOOTS and ended up with 54
recognition points.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies.
You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
I like this place, IAYE, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in IAYE and I've a long road
ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in IAYE again, farewell-- Alarond
the Scribe

The 2006 Mordanti Alliance Olympics are off to a grand start! With seventeen teams
declared, running under eight different flags (not to mention six additional non-
Olympic teams present), it is looking to be as tough as any previous Olympiad, if not
more! Olympians petitioned the Commission to make an allowance for late entries, and
the Commission agreed, and will allow new entrants to partake, as long as they are
active by Round 3 (T546, due May 29th). So if you wish to enter, please email your
intentions to amicitia@gwi.net with team name, manager name, and affiliation
(alliance name or independent), or show up in Mordant (DM-1) on, or before, May 29th
and place your declarations in the newsletter!
