This was a quality it shared with most waterfronts, as Old Doc Circ noted. "A breeding ground for disease, each and every one," the old alchemist said. "I have HEARD that the waterfronts of some of the elven cities up in Alfhame are cleaner, but I am not at all sure I believe it. That is contrary to the natural order of things, and as a man of science--" Senator Sedalia snorted. "A man of science? You're getting pretentious in your old age, you quack." Circ glanced at him. "I will forgive that remark, Sedalia, because I know you're worried about the young lady." "Gissanniah is a Lady Protector," Sedalia said stiffly. "She is able to take care of herself. The fact that she has not yet returned from...ah, from wherever she had to go, does not mean that she's in trouble." "Of course it doesn't," Circ said, his voice professionally soothing. "It's just that...it might mean trouble." He frowned and looked around the immediate area. "I distrust urgent messages that arrive by the hands of random urchins." "And the fact that we can't see another urchin anywhere now doesn't help," the senator agreed. "I've never had any luck getting urchins to carry messages for me," he added reflectively. "Not unless I autograph something for them--usually a bank draft! Mercenary tots." Kegrald Steelhand, the Khalhums Dwarf, emerged from a nearby chancler's shop with a coil of rope over his shoulder and a bag of spikes in his other hand. When he rejoined the two Lenpros, he said, "We probably won't need these, but just in case. Even the best dwarf-made ladders could become unreliable if not properly maintained." He looked at the two men sternly. "And humans just don't do maintenance very well." "And they'll have been under water, too," Circ said. "The ladders will have." "Yes. Not good for them," the dwarf agreed. Sedalia pulled out the map and looked around. "Which building?" "Something old," Circ said. "Stone," Kegrald added. "No dwarf would trust a wooden building--" "But the dwarves built these tunnels for a human king," Sedalia reminded him. "He might have stipulated a wooden building, or brick, or...whatever suited his ideas." Kegrald scowled, something he did very well. All dwarves scowled well; it was their beards and their heavy eyebrows. "I suppose," he admitted. "If it was anything but dwarf stonework, it could be gone by now. Four hundred years? Catch any wooden building lasting that long! But the foundation would have been dwarven stone regardless of what the rest was," he added. Sedalia passed him the map. "Which building?" The dwarf studied the map and the scalloped curve of Harbor Street that spread away in both directions. Finally he pointed to the north end. "It should be over there...but nothing seems to be in quite the right place." "A wooden building that's been lost, then," Sedalia said. He sighed. "So we go around checking the foundations. I hope this doesn't require...crawling." "Remember that at the time the tunnels were made, there was no strait, no harbor here," Old Doc Circ said. "Krael had not sunk, and that must have changed more of the ground than the sunken city itself." "Very true." The dwarf nodded approval. "Many humans don't seem to realize that, but major earth movements--unless magically contained, of course--affect larger areas than just the target." He grimaced. "And the entrance to the tunnels that we want might be under the strait now." He spread out the map against the wall of the nearest building and began to indicate point after point, linking the marked spots with what could be seen in the landscape. "This is...probably that tower on the headland," he said, indicating one of the marked locations. "No entrance there, of course, but it lets us orient.... Hmm." Senator Sedalia and Old Doc Circ, looking over his shoulders (easy to do, since he was a dwarf), both saw his point. "That round warehouse might be what we want," Sedalia said, indicating a building on the very edge of the land. "And the tunnel under it--if it's there-- might be full of water. Well, we have to find out." He straightened, tugged down the points of his vest, and touched the hilt of the sword at his waist. "We have to find out now." SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, IAYE? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. CIRCUS MAXIMUS turned their 2-3-0 turn into a 2nd place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch WORLDLY DECLINE's heads swell from their 3-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see ENCHANTED win a fight and gain 17 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, WINDY WIND beat SCARECROW and SCARECROW lost 7 points. You're breakin' my heart. Looks like IAYE has some guts at least, BIG MAC the Duelmaster was this turn's most-challenged warrior. CHIEF TOMTOM challenged IAYE's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as CHIEF TOMTOM takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Dragon's Blood Inn, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From IAYE's trash dumps? He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's the big D? CRYSTAL PALACE was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like LENPROS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for IAYE's morgue. More variety. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? What does the IAYE arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of IAYE. I feel much better now.
