Aruak City:
Kennelworth said that everyone going into the arena was watched these days,
counted, identified, and he thought checked magically. Anyone who practiced magic
was identified as such and barred from entry. Or most anyone; he figured the ones
that were allowed in had come to some kind of understanding with Khaldren. Maybe not
allies, but sworn not enemies, at least.
But there was more than one entrance to the arena, even more than one obscure
entrance. Adie knew that, and she was still surprised at the one Kennelworth found
for them. The innkeeper had connections in unexpected places. They were in a wine
merchant's cellar, their presence apparently known only to the mountainous Shew who
moved barrels around.
He moved one now, lifting it off a stand and rolling it to one side. There was
nothing behind it but the wall of the cellar, made of old bricks. Beams framed
panels of bricks and supported the ceiling. The Shew stood next to one of the posts,
face to the wall, and did something that nobody could quite see. One section of
bricks pivoted on its center and opened a narrow passage on either side. "You go in
on this side," he said, pointing to the one on the right where they would be walking
beside the outer face of the bricks. "If you were coming back this way, you'd go on
the other. But you aren't. I daren't leave it open that long, and I've got other
stuff to do, so when you're through, I'm going to close it and put the barrel back.
You have to find your own way out."
"Getting out should be easier," Fandil said. "People leaving the arena aren't
watched as closely as those coming in, after all, they've already paid, so who
cares?"
Adie nodded. Getting out was not a problem for present worry. With a little
luck, there would be nobody watching by the time they were ready to leave. "Where
does this take us?" she asked, gesturing at the doorway.
"Dark Arena level, behind the armory."
"Okay. We're going in now. Close it behind us. And thanks."
The Shew looked down at her. "Something's bad wrong," he said. "Fix it."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Although the Aruak City arena didn't have the financial problems of some, which
forced them to rent out space to all manner of productions when the gladiators
weren't dueling, it was generally quiet between fight days. But not this quiet. It
was like a tomb, and this was the night before the fights. There should be people at
work, checking weapons, training, preparing the Infirmary for a new influx of
patients. Even in this far corner of the structure, it should have been possible to
hear something. Silence.
Dead silence.
Adie looked at Fandil, uneasy for reasons she could name and for others she
couldn't. The old mage looked back at her, barely visible in the glow-worm light of
the safety strips along the walls. He shrugged and gestured that they should go
forward down this corridor. She took a deep breath and nodded. That's what they
were here for, after all.
The first step was hard, it was as though she was pushing against some soft
resistance. She thought it might be her own reluctance, and the uncertainty born of
the darkness and the silence. But it didn't get easier. The slight sound of her
footsteps was swallowed without an echo. The resistance remained; it felt like they
were pushing into hostile territory. She wished for more light, but they hadn't
brought lanterns, hadn't expected to need them. And she did not want to make a
magical light down here. As well blow trumpets and announce their presence. But she
wished there was some sign of others down here.
Fandil touched her arm and pointed at one of the doors along the corridor. It
looked no different than the others to her, and she had no sense of something special
behind it. But Fandil looked like a dog on point, a cat who's discovered a mousehole
with a mouse in it.
Adie stepped closer, almost on tiptoe, and ran her hands through the air an inch
from the door's surface. Nothing. She glanced a question at her companion.
He stepped up next to her. Immediately his hair stood on end, and even his
beard bristled, as though from the effects of static electricity. He moved his hand
toward the door's handle, and sparks flew between his fingers and the metal.
Adie shook her head. She still felt, sensed, nothing at all, on a mundane or a
magical level. But this door, whatever was behind it, had to be important. She made
a shooing motion to get Fandil back from it. Since it was reacting to him, better
that she should be the one to open it.
He stepped to the side along the narrow corridor, and Adie put her hand on the
cool metal of the latch.
SPY REPORT
You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to IAYE once again! Woof! THE WARLOCKS were a bunch of dogs after
LENPROS got through with 'em! 4th ain't so sweet as 1st! Ya gotta be quick on yer
feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! LENPROS is now
ranked 1st with a 3-1-0 turn. Some people say I ramble too much, I don't say
anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well GAMEHENDGE moved up 1, to 5th.
What's with SLEEPS ALL DAY? She actually beat RED DOG GANG's DR TRINAIRE, and walked
away with 23 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at RED DOG GANG while they
watched FENCE POST clobber CARDINAL ARIZPE. He lost 24 points and got bruised from
objects thrown from the stands. Another fighter (LADY HUNTSMAN 28-12-0) challenged
another Duelmaster (QUEEN CHINEE 26-19-1). Life goes on. I'm sure IAYE is excited
about LADY HUNTSMAN, the new Duelmaster from LENPROS. (remember?) But when you've
seen as many as I have... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on?
I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. IAYE thinks WORLDLY DECLINE
and their 51-43-2 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... Management
must be dealin', as the boys at LENPROS ain't reelin'! WORLDLY DECLINE's mad! What
do people see in EARTHQUAKE EXCUSE? Its 20-25-1? THE A'S -- LOSERS II ain't
talkin', but it's got 86 points.
Warriors of IAYE unite. You have only your games to lose! Here's some advice:
study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty.
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen
