Perhaps most of you had expected and anticipated that. The Cardinal would probably say "Hallelujah!" As has been the Lenpro way, I shall reveal Arizpe's "makeup" as it is felt that doing so may be a teaching and development process for those new to the game. First, let me speak to his accomplishments. His arena record (no tournament fights) is a fine 14-8-2. A 63% W/L is deemed great for any style, particularly bashers. While Lenpros disdain arena killing, many would consider the two kills trophies and a measure of good success. Cardinal Arizpe also earned the title, Duelmaster, twice. This is a lofty accomplishment and deserving of recognition. All in all, The Cardinal had a great career in DM and as such would be highly coveted by most. Obviously a warrior who had accomplished these many deeds must be a godling or near-godling. At the very least, he must have been highly blessed at birth. (Realize that being a Cardinal, or any of the religious cloth, is unlikely to add to warrior blessing. No, indeed! Here we are talking a different type of blessing.) On the contrary, you may be greatly surprised at the mediocrity of the Cardinal's birth stats. First, allow me to present his information revealed to him at Lord protectorship. Advanced Expert Attack and Decisiveness (no other ratings) Favorite Weapon - Maul Fave Rhythm - High OE/Low AL (offensive effort and activity level) As to his physicals at birth: 13-9-14-15-10-12-11 basher +1 attack (that's it!) Good damage, normal endurance (slightly hose and slight bless) Hmmmmm, you might say. Not much of a warrior at all. So why did Arizpe do so well? Was it because the manager was lucky and had him fighting at the favorite rhythm all the time? No, as 10 of the 14 wins were in minute one when Arizpe was set ay very high/very high. (Both kills were in minute one also, again indicating that favorite rhythm was not an effect on the record. Aha! It was because he found his favorite weapon quickly? Again a no. The Cardinal never tried the maul, his deemed favorite, because of the strength requirement for it. His success with weapons was as follows: Mace - 5/26/0 (crits/swings/extra value hits) Dagger - 2/5/0 (when used as a backup) Quarterstaff - 23/122/18 (thought it was THE fave) Perhaps there is some correlation between the quarterstaff and the maul. Shall we call the QS a Baby Maul? Perhaps, you say, Arizpe fought a lot of NPC's (computer stand-ins), hence the success? Yet, he had zero fights against such gladiators. So, is there a conclusion to this? Indeed, there is. It does not take a godling rollup to have success. Many warriors can do well, indeed very well, even though they are "mediocre designs". Cardinal Arizpe was one of those. Health. Humility. Honor. Iaye Forever Lenpro + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Cities by the Shore #19 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Aruak City: Fandil was reluctant to move on from the doorway where Adie had disappeared. It seemed like abandoning her, even though there was nothing he could DO there, and he might find some way to act and help if he continued. Plus there was the job he was supposed to be doing. Because Adie had disappeared did not lessen the importance of the job: the blood magic focus had to be deactivated, destroyed if possible. He wished that Cho hadn't stayed behind in Point. Ah, but if wishes were horses, all beggars would ride. Better to deal with what was real here. That he was inside the arena and alone. Perhaps Khaldren or his lieutenants thought all the danger to them must come from Adie, because her fiery personality made her the most visible. He would show them that age and cunning had its uses, too. Fandil flexed the fingers of his free hand, transferred his staff to that hand, and flexed the fingers of his other hand; ready to work. He extended his magical senses along the corridor and as far into the adjoining spaces as he could. No people within his range, which meant nobody close enough to be a problem. Nobody here in the sub-cellar of the arena, nobody near the stairhead to the next level up. No...people. But he sensed a mind, at the least an awareness. Perhaps a golem. On this level, ahead and to his right by thirty yards or so. That would be a place to start. Adie waited for her hidden opponent to make a move, and it did nothing. Foolish of it. She could be preparing a spell that would blast all hostile presences into-- No, she couldn't. She suddenly recognized the configuration of forces and intentions confronting her: it was the blood-magic collector or some part of it. The device she had come here to destroy. But if she formed a spell here and now, the collector would simply absorb the energy. She dared take no magical action in the presence of this thing. And for physical action, she needed a physical enemy, and preferably a little light to see him by. Laughter, and a man's voice. "You are more cautious than I was led to expect. Perhaps you will survive after all. That would be...pleasing. You are well-formed, and for a woman, intelligent. I have been alone long enough, I think." In the darkness, something closed around Adie's wrist. Perhaps a man's hand. Perhaps...not. It had no warmth of flesh, did not quite feel like fingers as it drew her "forward." She held back her immediate impulse to fight against it. She could do nothing standing here in the blackness, and this contact might take her to a place where she could act. "Am I in communication with Great Khaldren himself, then?" she asked. "In communication with," the voice repeated. "Yes, that is well put. "And yes, I am Khaldren. None other could bespeak you here. Certainly not that old fool you left behind!" "Where is 'here'?" "No particular place, at the moment, but I will have you brought to my citadel. My current, temporary, citadel, as I shall have a much more suitable place created for me once I finish this business between myself and the Madwoman Sheila of the Isle." "Madwoman?" "Oh, yes, unquestionably. She's been insane for centuries, you know, but she used to hide it better. Since the Eyes of the Isle failed, she has become... careless. Or perhaps she no longer realizes that her mind is going." His voice became thoughtful, and Adie had a mental image of him leaning back in a chair, maybe swirling a mouthful of brandy in a snifter, something casual, anyway. "Age alone would be enough to wear her down, even a pure elf grows tired in time, but the Grey Wand is an active agent of Chaos. She used to understand that danger and shield herself, but no longer. I could simply wait until the Wand has destroyed her utterly, as it will if nothing is done. But I have already waited...a long time. I am fundamentally not a patient man," Khaldren said, "and you would do well to remember that." Adie was silent for several moments. Khaldren's calm assumptions with regard to Lady Sheila were stunning in the first place. And then when she thought about them...disturbing. Adie was half elven herself and knew many elves claimed that no one not of pure descent could support the weight of memory that came with centuries of life. They were biased, of course, and they exaggerated, but...not completely. And Sheila was only a quarter elven, and more than centuries old. Four or five thousand years, according to the stories Adie had heard. Oh, true, there WERE ways to deal with that danger, if you recognized it in time. And the Grey Wand was undeniably a Chaos artifact. Sheila kept it with her always, actually carried it on her person. If the shielding was insufficient-- The outstretched hand by which she was being led touched something solid. Stone. Fitted stones, she could feel a joint between two blocks. "I seem to have arrived somewhere now," she said, "so now you can tell me where that is." "A poor replacement for the golden towers of Elinar," Khaldren said. "I believe you people call it Zorpunt." SPY REPORT Hail IAYE! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. And let's see, THOUGHT POLICEMAN fought SLIPKNOT and gained 18 points and contributed to WORLDLY DECLINE's 2-1-1. ISPEP has lost to IRISH CREAM, falling 15 points, while helping make RANDOM a 1-1-0 turn. Well done, IAYE, the Duelmaster was this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps SLEEPS ALL DAY is not as thrilled, being challenged 2 times. THE BOY KING challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone GAMEHENDGE's warrior. And not without some honor, THE BOY KING now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of IAYE. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Rat Nest uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the THE BRIGADE stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on IAYE, what are you afraid of? And guess who avoided THE BRIGADE stable the most? Believe it or not, it was LENPROS. Anyone surprised? A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. Kudos go out to OUT OF TIME this turn, for revenging GAMEHENDGE's bloodfeud against LENPROS' warrior MAJOR KOHLER. Well done. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. I like this place, IAYE, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in IAYE again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME THE BOY KING 4615 19 11 1 108 WORLDLY DECLINE (445) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -DON FRANCIS 4619 8 4 0 111 LENPROS (145) -STINGER 4098 9 11 0 104 RANDOM (391) DR TRINAIRE 4606 20 19 0 102 RED DOG GANG (356) SLEEPS ALL DAY 4603 13 12 1 100 GAMEHENDGE (299) EARTHQUAKE EXCUSE 4584 22 26 1 93 THE A'S -- LOSERS II (431) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -MARIS 4559 8 0 0 76 THE BRIGADE (441) FENCE POST 4604 16 25 0 75 RED DOG GANG (356) KLINK 4647 15 10 0 73 THE A'S -- LOSERS II (431) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME JACK STRAW 4722 5 0 0 60 THE WARLOCKS (430) MAPT 4100 8 7 0 59 RANDOM (391) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -MOPT 4103 5 4 0 56 RANDOM (391) OUT OF TIME 4681 11 8 1 55 GAMEHENDGE (299) IRISH CREAM 4654 9 13 0 54 RED DOG GANG (356) ISPEP 4527 5 2 0 42 RANDOM (391) BAINES 4724 5 0 0 41 GAMEHENDGE (299) -SAPPHIRE 4558 6 2 0 40 THE BRIGADE (441) WORLD CHUMPS 4726 4 1 0 39 THE A'S -- LOSERS II (431) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -OLGA 4560 5 3 0 33 THE BRIGADE (441) MAJOR KOHLER 4716 4 2 1 32 LENPROS (145) WINDSONG 4702 5 7 1 31 RED DOG GANG (356) LADY WOOF 4715 5 2 0 26 RED DOG GANG (356) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CURVEBALL 4719 2 3 1 25 THE A'S -- LOSERS II (431) BROTHER J.J. 4728 2 0 0 25 LENPROS (145) PRIVATE PERNA 4690 6 6 0 24 LENPROS (145) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -CELL BLABBER 4616 3 3 0 19 WORLDLY DECLINE (445) THOUGHT POLICEMAN 4736 1 0 1 18 WORLDLY DECLINE (445) KID MEDICATION 4713 3 5 0 14 WORLDLY DECLINE (445) ERTUS CHAR 4735 1 0 0 14 TEMPLAR ROGUES (449) OZZIE CANSECO 4723 3 2 0 12 THE A'S -- LOSERS II (431) -KORG 4568 2 2 1 12 THE BRIGADE (441) -AUSTERIC 4556 2 6 0 12 THE BRIGADE (441) HELP ON THE WAY 4717 2 3 1 10 THE WARLOCKS (430) FRANKLINS TOWER 4725 2 3 0 9 THE WARLOCKS (430) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
