"This material is of my creation," he said, "and I'm the one who understands it best. Also, as a youth, I did a certain amount of, ah, throwing things." "Relic of a misspent youth?" Senator Sedalia muttered. "I could tell a few tales of my own--" "Not now," Cho cut in. "The malign power of this place is affecting us all, in small and temporary ways now but it will increase with exposure. Let us do this and get out as quickly as we may." Sedalia nodded and stepped back. Circ finished molding the second putty-like mass of explosive and glanced upward at the carven ceiling. "Any specific spots up there I should aim for?" "Opposite sides of the inner circle of sigils," Cho said, "but anywhere within the sigils will do." "Right, everyone out of the way, start back along the route we laid out," the old alchemist said. Each of the others picked up part of Circ's gear--the old man would not need any encumbrance once he threw the explosives into place and began his own run for safety--and left. Gissanniah started to coil up the cord they'd followed down into the maze, then left it. The cord might make it easier for Circ to follow...if he survived this first stage. The tunnel seemed narrower than when they'd come down it, the walls closing in, squeezing them, choking off the air. Gissanniah decided that had to be all in her mind, she didn't LIKE small closed places under the ground like this, and maybe it was part of the "small and temporary" effects of the sigils, too, but-- The sound of footsteps behind her made her jump, and she looked back. It was Circ, running, and he gestured breathlessly for her to move faster. "Only ten minutes to get out of here," he reminded her as he caught up. "If you fall and twist an ankle--" "Oh. Yes, good point." The old alchemist slowed down just a little. "Or if I get too winded to run." He grimaced. "It's been a while since I stayed in condition for the arena every two weeks." They closed the distance to Sedalia and Cho, who were mixing another wad of explosive. "Keep going!" Sedalia barked. "Go on to the next point and start mixing there." "Right." Gissanniah grabbed the now-wheezing alchemist by the arm and kept moving along the cord to the next node of the pattern. While they were mixing there, Sedalia and Cho hurried past. Circ placed the explosive, and they ran farther upward, passing the senator and Cho again. Another batch. "This is the last one," Cho said as he and Sedalia caught up with them. "We don't dare take longer, things are about to blow." He grimaced. "Too bad we didn't have Raigavor along, he LIKES blowing things up." Gissanniah took the wad of chemical-soaked cotton from Circ and pressed it to the sigil on the ceiling. "Will this be enough?" "Probably. Almost certainly. Now, RUN!" Aruak City: Fandil was reluctant to move on from the doorway where Adie had disappeared. It seemed like abandoning her, even though there was nothing he could DO there, and he might find some way to act and help if he continued. Plus there was the job he was supposed to be doing. Because Adie had disappeared did not lessen the importance of the job: the blood magic focus had to be deactivated, destroyed if possible. He wished that Cho hadn't stayed behind in Point. Ah, but if wishes were horses, all beggars would ride. Better to deal with what was real here. That he was inside the arena and alone. Perhaps Khaldren or his lieutenants thought all the danger to them must come from Adie, because her fiery personality made her the most visible. He would show them that age and cunning had its uses, too. Fandil flexed the fingers of his free hand, transferred his staff to that hand, and flexed the fingers of his other hand; ready to work. He extended his magical senses along the corridor and as far into the adjoining spaces as he could. No people within his range, which meant nobody close enough to be a problem. Nobody here in the sub-cellar of the arena, nobody near the stairhead to the next level up. No...people. But he sensed a mind, at the least an awareness. Perhaps a golem. On this level, ahead and to his right by thirty yards or so. That would be a place to start. Fandil shifted his staff into his left hand and wiped his right hand on his robe, shifted it back and wiped his left. Maybe he was getting a little old for this kind of adventure...no, it was just nerves. And he was really worried about Adie. His mouth twitched, finally curving into a smile. She wouldn't like being considered a "fragile flower of femininity," though. She could take care of herself. Better to worry about what he was going to find. He reached a cross-corridor and paused. The Awareness, golem or whatever, was down this way. He ran over a few spells in his mind, just checking lightly to make sure they were ready, the way a warrior might check to make sure his sword was ready to hand. Power moved here, seething just under the surface of physical reality, spinning slowly toward the Awareness. That probably meant that the presence he sensed was the collector-concentrator-transmitter of the gathered blood-power, or something placed to guard it. He turned to the right and moved down the narrow corridor, counting his paces to block out the tension. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 287): BURPS FIRE HAMMER of ACID FIRE HAMMERZ (Hammer, mgr.) But what do those bums say? "Hit the road, Debby Tonte. IAYE needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Like, RED DOG GANG had to be so embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by THE A'S -- LOSERS II! Way to go THE A'S -- LOSERS II! RANDOM like really fought hard to move up to 3rd from 6th. Way to go! What was the name of that team who got 4-1-0 this turn for a total 210-174-7 you ask? (Sure) THE A'S -- LOSERS II's their name, and fighting's their game! MVP award for ISPEP? RANDOM's proud of him after beating FENCE POST and getting 19 points. Talk about yer big time losers! IRISH CREAM got smashed by MOPT, and lost 13 points! Oh, wow, like the Duelmaster must be the most popular beast in all IAYE. It got the most challenges. (But what about proposals?) Like, THE BOY KING must be pretty gutsy! He challenged the Duelmaster from THE A'S -- LOSERS II. Does this guy have a death wish or what! Was that a tear I saw in THE BOY KING's eye, as he took over Duelmastership? And wasn't EARTHQUAKE EXCUSE fit to be tied! Who was the wiseguy that said IAYE's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Wharf Rat? Don't look at me! AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. WORLDLY DECLINE was the most avoided team. Is a 57-53-3 record really that scary? I don't know what LENPROS' been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from WORLDLY DECLINE, that's fer sher. Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All IAYE ever talks about is fighting! Me, I'm more laid back.
