It has been several cycles since we've been able to give this line of events the
attention it requires. When last seen, Fandil was about to blow himself up in order
to destroy the which allowed the mage Khaldren to drain the Aruaki of their power.
Adie was apparently in captivity to the same power-hungry mage and seeking a way out.
Cho and the gladiators from Iaye have just blown Krael, which served to focus the
power of the Arcanum to Khaldren's use, back into the waters of the Trier and the
past from which Khaldren had drawn it.

Probably Zorpunt:

Adie set the focused point of her powers against the keystone. A sudden thrust,
or steady pressure? She started to weigh factors and options, then shrugged that off
impatiently. She was a fire mage, and all her instincts were to strike quickly and
hard. Instincts, and inclination as well. All her anger and outrage at what
Khaldren had done to the Aruaki rose up in a burning fountain and struck the
keystone. Something responded with a groan, then a roar of counter-pressure.
Adie was blind to everything but the contest of forces within the Arcanum, blind
to the leap of fire from the candles in her prison chamber, flames that soared up
tall as trees to meet the distant roof and set fire to the rafters. She didn't hear
the driving rain with which Khaldren fought back, or the battering waves from the
Trier that hammered the stones of the tower.
But she heard Khaldren's voice, shrieking fury and fear. "What are you DOING?
Don't--you can't--" The voice rose to a scream, joining the scream of the struggling
elements. She had the impression that he wasn't protesting her actions, now. That
someone else had seized his attention by... doing something drastic. Good! A
magician who undertook more projects than he could manage at one time deserved
whatever happened to him. Especially, Khaldren deserved it. Between one breath and
the next, which was all the time she could give to extranious matters, Adie
remembered that Cho and his crew had planned to blow up or otherwise destroy the
ability of ancient Krael to focus power for Khaldren, and that Fandil was searching
for the focusing device said to be hidden under the Aruak City arena so that he could
destroy it. One or the other t\of them must have succeeded. Good! Very good.
The keystone that held together the spell sealing this tower was crumbling under
the pressure of her will. She pushed harder. She could feel the spell cracking.
Feel Khaldren himself cracking as he tried to fight three enemies at once. Her lips
drew back in a predator's grin.

Fandil watched the forces coming together. They seemed to be moving very
slowly. That was illusion, he knew. But it gave him time, too much and too little.
Some people said that older magicians were at an advantage in a suicidal situation,
that having lived longer, they were more willing to go. Not true. Having lived
longer, he knew what he was giving up. Only the knowledge that he was achieving
something for the people here that was of critical importance, and that could not be
accomplished by any less drastic means, made it possible to go on with this. Only
the golem had it easy here, because it truly was a Thing, knowing neither fear nor
loss--
"Not so," the golem said in his mind. "We are together in this place of power,
and what you feel is felt by... myself. I do not understand... self. I do not
understand 'I', only that there is regret that understanding will have no time to
develop. Is this what it is to live?"
     "Yes."
"How do living people endure the knowledge of death and yet continue to live?"
Fandil suppressed an impulse to hysterical laughter. "One day at a time," he
said.
"This 'day'," the golem said. "There is not a time of that length before the
end."
     "True."
"This is unacceptable. There must be time enough to know life."
Fandil had a sense of powers shifting into new courses. "The device you contain
must be destroyed," he said sharply. "Otherwise there are many--thousands of Aruaki-
-who will not have another day of life."
"Understood. The first mission is to end the device. This shall be done. It
is in process. But the self will be preserved. My self. Your self. It can be
done. It is a matter of dimensions."
     "What--"
The forces converged and thought ended in a blossom of power.

A wind rushed into the tower where the stonework had collapsed. Wet, cold,
fresh. Adie took a deep, grateful breath, then glanced over her shoulder as she
became aware of heat behind her. The tower was on fire. Stone doesn't burn, not
easily, at least, but wooden rafters had collapsed into the shaft of the tower and
were burning. And there must have been other flammables, even though she hadn't
noticed them, because the whole whole space was a column of flame. It was, she
realized, HER fire, a spear in her hand and a shield on her arm.
None the less, it would be a good plan to get out of the tower before it
collapsed. Those stone walls weren't hers, after all. She began to clamber over the
tumbled blocks in front of her.

Khaldren stood in the circle which he had made to be the center of his strength,
the focus of all his various sources of power. The focus, now, of chaos and attack.
His network was coming undone around him, and the power he had gathered so carefully
was rushing away in many directions. He was sure he could counter any one of those
attacks, was he not the Great Khaldren? But not all at the same time. These
wretched short-lived people were ganging up on him! It was unfair. They didn't
realize that he could have, would have made their wretched little Alastari into the
core of a glorious kingdom of power!
His resolve hardened. If he could not build his kingdom here, then nobody
would. He had known ingratitude before, and he was prepared to deal with it. The
structures which had gathered power for him were shattered, but he still had a
reserve of stored power. Enough to bring down their petty states around their ears.
He reached for the triggers, then froze as a woman clothed in flame came toward
him through the fire-shot night.

"No!" Adie put all her will to command into that word as she saw Khaldren reach
out to touch a sigil mounted on a stone monolith. The sigil itself was not familiar,
some kind of trigger, she thought, but whatever the mage intended to do with it must
be something she should and would oppose. Some kind of revenge destruction, he would
be the type for that.
She saw him hesitate and turn toward her, eyes wide, saw wrench free and turn
again to his instrument of revenge.
But she was not the type to let him do it. She raised her right hand,
unsurprised by the spear of flame she held, and flung it at him.

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit
back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Coming up with
a solid 0-0-0 outing, TEMPLAR ROGUES has advanced 4 places in the rankings. THE A'S
-- LOSERS II is no joke as it posted a 3-0-0 week advancing from 3rd place to 2nd
place. And falling like a basher in the top ten was OUT OF TIME, who dropped 13
points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with M. CHARDINEE. In front of
all the crowds, IRISH CREAM took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum
two weeks. Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff?
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the IAYE arena. Here's a
song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad GAMEHENDGE? Big bad GAMEHENDGE. Big bad
GAMEHENDGE. IAYE's afraid of the big bad GAMEHENDGE. Tra la la la la! For those of
you who like math, try this one: GAMEHENDGE + Weapons That go Boom = LENPROS + Avoid
City. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, FENCE POST would be president.
Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. In a touching display by a
'touched' warrior, PRIVATE PERNA went after FENCE POST, who was higher by 18 points.
Well, when the dust settled, PRIVATE PERNA beat FENCE POST.
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Remember: alliances are great, but try and
take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in IAYE have no sense
of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the world's best
comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Its been fun, and I'm
sure you enjoyed it (boos). Now that I've got you worked up for Snide Clemens, I'll
be leaving-- The Unknown Spymaster

CALLING ALL THUGS, BRUTES, OGRES, QUARTER HALF WITS, SHALLOW HALBERD ENTHUSIASTS AND
MAUL RATS: Since the Bashing style has often been maligned in the forums, it is time
to give the style a little tough love with the following concept: An ALL-BASHER
arena. The rules are simple--enter the arena as a rookie basher. That's it. RSI
said I need to get 20 managers on board and I'm about half way there. If you are
interested in taking part, PM me in the forums or email me: chase at accesspr.com
and put D2 in the subject header.

Chase a.k.a. SwineTiger

ATTENTION EVERYONE -- In March I am going to do manager lists for all arenas. This
is part of my ongoing and undoubtedly largely futile attempt to get my lists
organized. If you think I might not know who you are or if you think I might and
you'd rather I not share that information, let me know this month! You can e-mail
me at Sue at solberg dash mathews dot com (replacing the at, dash and dot with
appropriate characters. You can send a diplo to The Saint. You can put an ad in
the newsletter. Semaphore doesn't work so well, nor does telepathy. -- The Saint,
