It was one of the worst parts of the city. Calling it a slum would be an insult
to honest slums elsewhere. Lenpro's first instinct was to hustle the Flower Girl out
of there. How did she even come to know such an area? He glanced sideways at
Sizzling Sunflower. It might be better to ask how she could help finding it.
Sunflower was leaning close to a man, talking earnestly. Persuasively, because
his firm gestures of refusal were becoming uncertain. Very persuasively, because she
finally took him by the arm and brought him over to Lenpro. As he watched them
approach, the manager was impressed with how carefully the stranger did not attempt
to take any liberties with the Flower Girl.
"This is Two-finger Tom," Sunflower said. "He saw what happened, and he'll tell
you what he saw."
"Yeah, well." The man squinted at him, looked around carefully, leaned closer.
His breath was bad. "I seen some of those cat men grab a couple of decent girls.
Dragged 'em off, they did. I reckon that has something bad in mind."
Lenpro resisted the urge to step away from this case of walking halitosis. "We
can't go by what you 'reckon'," he said. "What do you know for sure?"
"That a coupla those Aruaki--" Two-finger Tom spat, narrowly missing Lenpro's
boot, "they grabbed a coupla human girls and dragged them off. Down that way," he
added, jerking his head toward the river. "No telling what they might do to the
girls. Cats. You can't trust 'em."
"Then we'd best go look for the girls." Lenpro glanced around at the crowd that
had gathered. "A group of us are going to look for the girls who were taken," he
said. "A disciplined group, not a mob."
Someone in the back of the crowd laughed. "Sounds to me like a mob--a LYNCH
mob--is what's needed here."
"Yeah, we can start by killing all those beast-men! More beast than man, THEY
are!" someone else yelled. Also someone in the back that Lenpro couldn't see. The
crowd stirred and muttered, some in agreement and some not, but the agreement seemed
to have the upper edge.
"No killing out of hand!" Lenpro shouted back. "That isn't the Andorian Way--"
The first man took up the argument again, his voice dripping contempt. "The
'Andorian Way' is just a pretty toy the elves and beast-lovers came up with to hobble
us honest humans! That 'Andorian Way' isn't worth spit!"
The crowd stirred and muttered. A lot of the mutters seemed to be in agreement
with the hecklers.
"Show yourself!" Lenpro demanded. "If you have courage in your convictions,
step forward and show your face."
The crowd stirred and a man came forward. Was thrust forward, perhaps against
his will, by the people around and behind him. He looked defiant, truculent.
He looked Karnhorn. Lenpro knew that racial stereotyping was often unfair, but
he needed to discredit this man before the crowd became a mob. "Is this the Karnhorn
party line you've been handing out?" he asked, keeping his voice calm, idly curious.
"It sounds like it, and you look like it."
More stirring in the crowd, mutters, a wave of suspicion. If there was a
lynching, this man might be first, and he could see it. "I'm no Kjarran-lover," he
growled. "Don't go putting words in my mouth!"
"Somebody's been putting them there," Lenpro said. "Somebody with his
headquarters in Zuwayza, I'd guess." He held up a hand and stopped the surge of the
crowd--for now, at least. "You didn't want us to wait for facts before lynching
Aruaki, why should we wait for facts before lynching you?"
     "I'm not--!"
Someone threw a stone, Lenpro couldn't see who. It arched up over the heads of
the crowd and struck the possible Karnhorn on the side of the head so that he
staggered and fell, blood running down the side of his face.
The crowd roared and became a mob, maddened and excited by the blood, by having
a target for hostility that had been festering. Lenpro cursed and pushed Sunflower
back. He wanted the heckler for questioning, but he wasn't going to get the man.
The mob would see to that--and maybe that mob had been triggered by his accomplice
who didn't want questions asked. He wanted to go in search of the missing girls, but
he suspected that wasn't going to happen right away, either. The witness, informant,
that Sizzling Sunflower had found was in the thick of the mob.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

That's the trouble with you humans, well, you're a golem, but the principle
applies. Out of Time. Because you think time is important. Abstractly, you know.
Us dogs don't do abstract, and we're a lot happier. Sure, we like to be fed
regularly, but that has more to do with being hungry than with a clock. For us,
"morning" is good enough, and we don't have to fret over nine am, or ten am, or
eleven am, or whatever. So we're never "out of time." Which might be why I won, or
maybe just because golems don't have the knack. Who can tell? Who cares?

                                    Little Rocky

                                      SPY REPORT

It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! Practice pays for LADY LIBERTY, who pummelled RUSTIE, to pocket 26
points. RUSTIE certainly had a baffled expression on hers face, after losing to LADY
LIBERTY and losing 19 points in the process! HELP ON THE WAY found out that IAYE
isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! So who was the
warrior seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got
a basic problem...
So much to report, so little time! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the
mountaintops, so stand the warriors of GAMEHENDGE, alone and unchallenged. As a
woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of LENPROS, so did that sorry team shy
from GAMEHENDGE If challenges were horses, HELP ON THE WAY could open up a fast food
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Ask not for
whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. More important duties call me. IAYE, I
leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Rat Nest. 'Til next
time-- Novgorodny Vir

Congratulations to Little Rocky, Dog Of The Month AND Duelmaster! -- The Lenpros

Baines -- You were patient, but not patient enough. (wink) -- Sir Carlson

Friendly Constable -- Thank you for the welcome. I think I shall like Iaye. --
Brother Dobbin

Moondog -- Abide by the rules of our city and beware the dogcatchers. (wink) --
Mayor McLay

Spud -- You ruined my perfect record, you dog! -- Lady Liberty

Hot diggety dog! A great start for me with a drive down the middle and sinking a
twenty-footer for the birdie. (Or was that a doggy?) -- General Golf

Health. Humility. Honor. Iaye Forever. -- Lenpro

That Kung-Fu Master goes around KICKING DOGS! I should have expected it when I saw
he was a dwarf. Dwarves just don't understand dogs at all. Sad. For them. They
miss so much. -- Rustie

Mayro Mclay -- I can TOO kill a houseplant! I did just the other day, although I
didn't MEAN to, but I was trying to bury a bone in the pot and, well, the plant got
uprooted. But it was just a plant, you know, so who cares? And I couldn't bury it
OUTSIDE, because the ground is frozen. -- Moondog
P.S. Are you going to do anything about this darned leash law? It's really putting
a crimp in my social life.

Lady Liberty -- What's the point of wearing socks that look like they aren't there
and then when a dog comes along quite innocently and rubs up against 'em, they get
"runs" and you get all mad? I'm not seeing the point in this. I mean, they look
like no socks, and they're so thin they can't be very warm, so why wear 'em? -- Spud
P.S. They aren't even good to chew on.

General Golf -- But...! I was just going to play with your ball, fetch it back and
all, so why did you get so upset? There was no need to hit me with your stick. That
hurt! -- Diggity Dog

Lenpro -- It must've been some kind of fluke, but sometimes it feels good to be top
dog! -- Jorja for the Red Dog Gang

Lady Liberty -- It's a friendly gesture, dammit. -- Diggity Dog

A salute to all who participated in the tourney, and remember, there are some things
that are better buried under the rug. -- Jorja and the Red Dog Gang
