West of Fratsfa:

Elosjon heaved a sigh of relief when his feet touched firm ground again, and he
didn't care if Fandil heard him or not. He had been afraid--no, he was afraid now.
In the tree, he had been terrified. Of falling. Of failing.
The old mage gripped his arm, held one hand to his mouth briefly to signal
silence, and then pulled him away from the ravine, deeper into the forest. Higher up
the mountain.
After several minutes of silent walking, or at least walking without speech,
Elosjon figured he could risk speech. "What about Redbud?" he whispered.
"We keep going," Fandil said. "She may, probably will, be fine. And she's
doing a necessary job so that we can go forward and do a different and even more
necessary job. Let us not waste her efforts."
"Right, right. The magician at Mountain Home." He hesitated. "I could be
wrong about Mountain Home. I only have the word of Herlas of Zensu and he's, well,
his reputation isn't exactly--"
"I feel sure that you ARE correct," Fandil said. "All my instincts tell me so.
We will find an answer up there on the mountain. If we get there soon enough."
Elosjon was silent for several minutes, trying to work that out. Finally he
said, "Soon enough?"
"Eh?" Fandil brought his thoughts back from a great distance. "Oh, certainly.
That magician has a plan in progress. Now, plans are like snow on a mountain: They
build up and build up, and suddenly they reach the point where they become an
avalanche. Building pressure can be dealt with, but once you have an avalanche, all
you can do is try to survive until it's over. If we can reach our opponent before
his plan becomes an avalanche, we can--probably--stop him. After... we can only hope
to pick up the pieces."
"Oh." Elosjon stared into the darkness, not total darkness because some moon-
and starlight filtered through the trees, and thought about that as he walked. This
old man, who had been a magician for longer than he, Elosjon, had been alive was
messing up all his preconceived notions of what it actually meant to be a magician.
There seemed to be a lot more luck, and a lot more responsibility, involved than he
had expected. He wasn't sure he could handle it. That thought made him pause. Was
he going to give up, then? No! He would do his best, the very best that was in him
and maybe just a little more, and either he would survive the effort or he wouldn't.
But no quitting. It was almost a relief to make up his mind like that.
The path they were following came out of the trees into an open area. A ghost
town, abandoned buildings, overgrown yards, a rutted street. Elosjon stopped. "This
used to be the village of Mountain Home," he said.
Fandil stopped beside him and looked around. "Odd," he muttered, sniffing the
air. "There's something here, or has been recently."
"What? And how can you tell?" The younger mage sniffed too. It smelled like
an animal's den, a little. Maybe fading. And something else. Sulfur? Recognition
came with a cold chill down his spine. "A demon?"
"In general terms, yes. I think so. Something from that neighborhood, anyway."
Fandil was silent for a moment, his head cocked as though to listen.
Elosjon listened, too, but the only sounds he heard were made by the wind
rustling the brush and tapping on the roofs. Unless there was something he was
missing? He listened harder, so hard that his ears rang with the silence. If there
was a real sound, he wasn't hearing it.
     "Not here now," Fandil said.
"If there was something, what would we hear?"
"Depends on WHAT there was, but... scratching. Clicking. Maybe grumbles.
Which way is the castle from here? We should go on before the 'watchdog' returns."

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Where did THEY come from? Hey, Wrestlemaniacs, you look ready to take us all
on. Welcome back. Still looking for our old time favorites--Baron Von Raschke and
Verne Gagne!
Well, now I have to say that there are three lofty Challenger Champs who could
easily handle me, especially on a challenge. Oh, my! What am I going to do?
Speckle you bad, bad dog! What are you doing killing friendly newbies to the
arena? You got rabies or something? May Jack Be Nimble fight well in That Great
Arena In The Sky. Good luck with a great replacement, Dr. Fil.
Consortium Teams list this kind of stuff occasionally, and now it is my turn.
Here is what us five Lenpros looked like at birth. The numbers are listed from
lowest to highest by stat--obviously to "jumble things up." Here we are:
ST 9,10,11,13,13
CN 10,11,11,15,17
SZ 9,9,9,10,16

WL 9,9,17,18,19
SP 7,8,9,10,16
DF 10,12,13,15,16
Come and get us. We enjoy the competition. We might warn you, though, that we
all reside in a very Andorian arena, and ethics and sportsmanship area the very

As Lenpro says, Health; Humility; Honor.

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. IAYE needs a spyreport." Oh, well. MVP award for JACK THE
RIPPER? ALL JACKED UP's proud of him after beating MOONDOG and getting 23 points.
Talk about yer major upsets! DIGGITY DOG's match with HIPS cost him a loss of 17
points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think SIR CARLSON should
let SPUD be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. I hear the top team
insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for
PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. WRESTLMANIACS
was the most avoided team. Is a 80-64-4 record really that scary? Is there some
deep dark secret why LENPROS' been avoiding WRESTLMANIACS so much? Or is it just
that they're too scared? Can THE WARLOCKS' HELP ON THE WAY be more popular than me?
It was challenged the most, but is that really the same? For sure, I was holding my
breath when I found out JACK DANIELS challenged FIFI DELITE. After all, haven't ALL
JACKED UP and RED DOG GANG had a long standing duel in IAYE? It wasn't a spectacular
fight, or anything, but FIFI DELITE wants me to write about it since she subdued JACK
DANIELS. Satisfied?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job,
that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte
