"Even if we can't find the portal to take us back to the true Fratsfa--" "Will they let us go?" the Lady Protector asked. She glanced to the side and saw that Lenpro had his own sword out. Oddly, she'd never thought of him as being a warrior--he was so old! But he managed gladiators, trained them, and he'd lived a long time in a world where violence was not uncommon. "Can they stop us, except by magic?" the manager asked. "And I have a feeling their half-demon mage will be busy trying to keep control of things now that you've beaten his--I think the vampire was his enforcer." "I don't know for certain that the vampire's dead," Sunflower warned. "They're tricky to kill." "Doesn't matter," the manager said, steering her to her right. They hurried down another street, not running, because if you ran, there was always something or someone who would automatically give chase. "Even if it isn't dead, or what passes for dead among vampires, it was hurt and won't be up to giving us trouble before we can get out of here." He swerved to the left into an alley, and she followed. "Do you know where we're going?" Sunflower asked. "Not that I care much at the moment, as long as it's 'away'." "I've got a good idea which way the Portal lies," Lenpro said. "Fandil is the magician in the family, but there are other kinds of skills." "If you can find and open the Portal back to Fratsfa--" "I can find it," Lenpro said. "I'm nearly certain I can find it. But opening it might present problems. Unless there's someone on hand who can be coerced. I do coercion from time to time." "Good. So do I." They turned another corner, and Lenpro pointed ahead. An archway of mismatched stones straddled the way ahead of them, framing grayness. "There's our portal," he said. Andor: Outcast Orchid stared back toward the avenue and the slaughter of the "king" by out-of-work gladiators. "I don't believe it! Those gladiators were waiting to kill the king--the golem they thought was the king. How could they do such a thing?" "You saw how," the man beside her said. "Yes, but--" "Gladiators come all kinds, just like ordinary people," he went on. "Some good, some bad, and a lot of them on the fence. And this hasn't been a good town for a gladiator since the arena closed. They were probably so glad to have a job that they didn't look into it closely." "You're saying someone paid them to--?" "Of course." He steered her into an alley just before a troop of mounted guards rushed past. "Very few people, gladiators or not, are genuine anarchists to kill what they believe is the king just for... kicks." He paused at the other end of the alley, looked both ways, and hurried her across another street into an overgrown park. "But they must have expected the guards, why didn't they have an escape route ready?" "They were most likely told the guards wouldn't be a problem. Don't you see?" He stopped and turned to face her. "They were set up to kill and to die." He shook her a little. "Believe it, lady! Lord Korneth doesn't care whose death he ordered, and you will be a target if anyone noticed and recognized you. Even if no one saw you at the parade--any gladiator found in Andor today will be marked for death. You have to get out of the city!" "And so do you," she answered. "You helped me get away, and someone will have noticed--someone always notices." "My life is already forfeit. Gods forgive me, I've been a part of this. But they will not find my death easily achieved, and that may buy you extra time to escape--" "If you want to make amends for whatever it is you've done, better to help FIX things than just throw your life away," Orchid argued. She glanced around, orienting herself. "Fratsfa's THAT way." She set out, keeping a firm grip on her companion's arm. "Come ON." "Lady--" "Don't waste time and breath arguing," she said. "Just come ON. When we get out of the city, THEN we can argue." West of Fratsfa: Elosjon glanced over his shoulder as they left the deserted buildings of Mountain Home behind them. He had been thrilled when a well-known, deeply respected magician like Fandil of Ardivent had invited him to help, but the idea of facing a demonic 'watchdog' chilled him to the bone. He was not skilled enough to deal with demons, and he knew it. He just didn't want to have to admit it to a master of his profession. He took a deep breath, coughed at the bite of sulfur in the air, and squared his shoulders. He would do his best. Surely an experienced magician like Fandil would understand that his best was all he could do. But he hoped they wouldn't meet that demonic watchdog. His mind was so fixed on what he hoped that he didn't notice where he was going and ran full into Fandil. The old magician was standing in the middle of the overgrown road, immobile as a tree, staring up the mountain. Elosjon followed the direction of his gaze. Fandil was looking at the castle on the ridge above what had been the town. Studying it. Okay. Elosjon studied it, too. He had only seen it once before, a long time ago, when he was a kid--well, that might not seem long to someone like Fandil, but it was a long time ago to him. He didn't remember it clearly. At least, he didn't remember it looking quite like this. He frowned, trying to figure out what was different... or wrong. It was a fairly standard Medieval Frafrejan castle. Central keep, enclosing wall with a lot of pointy little towers along it.... Wasn't that wall leaning outward a little too much? It looked like a stone wave about to break over their heads. In fact, for a structure that was at least half a mile away horizontally, maybe a little farther vertically, it seemed to be looming very much over their heads. Enough that it would be no surprise if it blocked out the sun. That had to be a magical effect, didn't it? Even though he'd never heard of one like that. "Our enemy is powerful, and heedless of normal safety," Fandil said. His voice was quiet. "That heedlessness makes him doubly dangerous. And it is crucial that he be destroyed, or he will destroy not only us, not only the Andorian League, but a goodly portion of this whole area." The old mage's voice hardened. "He is dabbling on the edges of Chaos magic." Elosjon paled. He had traveled some in Alastari as part of his education in magic, had seen the Smoking Plain near Delarq Tor that was all that remained of a fertile and populous countryside that had been hit with a blast of Chaos magic five hundred years ago during the last Chaos War. And he had heard of the Twisted Lands farther south, where the Chaos War of three and a half millennia ago had centered. And now someone would do it here? "No! We can't allow that--anything we can do, I would give my life if that would stop him--" He started up the road to the castle. Fandil caught his arm. "You may end up doing that, and I may also, but we will not succeed by rushing straight ahead. This calls for planning and finesse." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 313): CONSTERNATION of CONSANGUINEOUS (Mannequin, mgr.) Me? Duelmaster? After only seventeen fights? I am honored. I am not so sure I thought I would ever reach this pinacle. I offer my prayers of thanks to the gods. Luckily I have something to write about. My teammate, Lady liberty, has been rightfully and deservedly promoted to Lord Protector. I congratulate her, and will tell you all I know about her: 12(+2)-11-9-17-18(+1)-10-11 hosed in damage LU Even at 12ST and 9SZ, she does only normal damage 16-4-0 in arena, 0-3-0 in tournaments Faves? Perhaps LO at 8/53/0 or SS at 11/83/1 Faves - learned a lot of Init Master - Init, Adex Attack, that's all folks Lenpro will post the real faves when they are publicised Good luck to her in her retirement. She was quite a valuable teammate. Well, I am here. I would like to think a DM is formidable, but it is merely me. Come and get me, and may the best warrior win. Brother Dobbin SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of IAYE! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. My praise to ALL JACKED UP for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round deserving of notice! DIGGITY DOG caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested JACK THE RIPPER and was awarded 25 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, DIGGITY DOG put down JACK THE RIPPER, causing him to lose 22 points of recognition in the process. Although HELP ON THE WAY made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of victorious BROTHER DOBBIN. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. IAYE, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy guilds is WRESTLMANIACS, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of LENPROS last week. Busy avoiding WRESTLMANIACS? Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after SPUD. Watch your back! A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that MAJOR MARTIN posted a challenge against the more highly recognized SPUD. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand MAJOR MARTIN subdued SPUD. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more than its fair share of red in recent times. Walk proud, warriors of ALL JACKED UP! By striking down SPECKLE you have avenged the honor of your dead. Your virtue is known to all in IAYE. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always! The girls are as pretty in IAYE as ever I remembered them....and the fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BROTHER DOBBIN 4795 15 3 0 116 LENPROS (145) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME HELP ON THE WAY 4717 17 42 2 95 THE WARLOCKS (430) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -ROLA NYAH 4638 2 0 0 84 TEMPLAR ROGUES (449) MAJOR MARTIN 4807 13 1 0 83 LENPROS (145) SPUD 4783 15 19 0 77 RED DOG GANG (356) HIPS 4800 6 0 0 73 HER BEST ASSETS (461) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DIGGITY DOG 4793 8 13 0 59 RED DOG GANG (356) MOONDOG 4790 13 17 1 57 RED DOG GANG (356) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME JACK HAMMER 4815 4 2 1 52 ALL JACKED UP (463) -LIPS 4811 4 0 0 40 HER BEST ASSETS (461) JACK DANIELS 4813 4 2 0 39 ALL JACKED UP (463) JACK THE RIPPER 4817 5 1 0 35 ALL JACKED UP (463) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SPECKLE 4819 6 2 1 30 RED DOG GANG (356) JACK KNIFE 4814 3 3 0 29 ALL JACKED UP (463) SENATOR WILEY 4821 3 2 0 28 LENPROS (145) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME FIFI DELITE 4810 5 8 0 23 RED DOG GANG (356) CRACKER JACK 4824 2 1 0 20 ALL JACKED UP (463) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BEE-STUNG LIPS 4829 1 0 0 20 HER BEST ASSETS (461) SENSUAL SMILE 4828 0 1 0 1 HER BEST ASSETS (461) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
