On the coast north of Zukal:
The half hour it took for Harlund to return with his rowboat seemed a lot
longer. Ghenis had finished his examination of the tracks and returned to the beach
to stare again at Veleks' body on the rock. He was reasonably sure that the running
footsteps belonged to his thief, Veleks. But the hoofmarks.... Long and narrow,
almost triangular in outline, and as deep as those made by a galloping horse carrying
a fully armored knight. He didn't like the possibilities those tracks hinted at. If
they didn't come from a native and natural beast, what then?
The rumor was that magic was in a state of major decline due to something or
other--not that he depended on magic for anything important. He would have expected
that to mean that interdimensional Gates couldn't be opened. But what if the reverse
was the case, and it meant that Gates couldn't be held shut? What if they could--
should--expect a growing flood of alien creatures, maybe even another Chaos war? He
didn't want to think it might be coming to that, but no intelligent, practical man
denied a possibility just because he didn't like it. And Ghenis hoped that he was
both intelligent and practical. He frowned at Harlund, who was rowing slowly closer
along the shore. He'd have to question the beach walker, and from what he'd seen,
Harlund would demand money just to listen, and maybe more to answer. Greedy wretch.
Ghenis climbed into the rowboat and sat where Harlund directed him. The water
was cold, he could feel the chill coming up through the bottom of the boat. And
clearer than he'd expected. Not that there was anything of interest to see on the
muddy bottom. A rock or two, algae furred sticks...a crisp, green curve with a line
of bright gold showing? He leaned over to look more closely.
"You trying to tip us over?" Harlund demanded.
"I thought I saw something down there." He twisted to look back as the beach
walker kept rowing.
Harlund glanced at the shore, straight back and to either side. "You probably
did," he said finally. "This must be near enough to where the _Light of Els_ went
down."
"Should we mark the place so you can salvage--?"
"I wouldn't touch anything out of that ship," the beach walker said flatly.
"Nor would anyone else on this coast. In the two hundred or more years since the
_Light_ sank, I don't think anyone's touched so much as a piece of driftwood from
it."
Ghenis raised his eyebrows but asked no more questions. He didn't think Harlund
would answer them, and better not to show too much interest. But when he got back to
Zukal, he would find out all he could about a ship named the _Light of Els_. He
returned his attention to the bottom sliding past under them. There might be
something he could use down there.
As they neared the rock, the bottom fell away into opaque depths. Ten feet,
Harlund had said, but for all he could see, it might as easily have been a hundred.
He looked at Veleks and saw that the thief was moving a little. Still alive?
Amazing. And gratifying. Veleks could answer some questions, then. He was looking
forward to that.
Ibizond, between Murska and Korga:
The news from the east was confused, more rumor than definite report, but to
Lord Protectors with time on their hands, rumor was enough. Aghtamar and Zilla, both
Korgans who had trained in Veastian, hatched the idea between them: that they should
go east toward Zuwayza and find out what really was going on. There might be action,
and action was something lacking in their lives since graduation. Fist of Kjarran, a
Zuwayzan visiting the team Korgan Crusade, decided that his duty was to go with them:
there would be a chance to serve the Glorious Empire and acquire merit in the eyes of
Kjarran and His Daughter Jayde.
The journey south from Veastian to Ibizond, a matter of some thirty miles, was
straightforward but tedious. Mile after mile of forest, with nothing but the
possibility of a wild Shew to break the monotony, was not exciting. And apparently
all the wild Shews were hanging out around Veastian and contributing to the troubles
there, rather than keeping travelers from falling asleep on the road to the south.
Ibizond itself, on the main traders' road from Zuwayza and Malcorn to Murska and
Zensu was bigger than Korga but much like it. The population was a mixture of
Karnhorn types and Harkeny, the houses were built of stone and logs, and the
government was treading a careful line between independence and Karnhorn domination.
They reached it just before sunset.
Fist of Kjarran looked at the wooden palisade critically. "That might stop the
Shews," he said, "but any day the Glorious Empire truly wants to take Ibizond, it
will fall. No two ways about that."
Zilla snorted. "Korga wasn't a pushover, what makes you think Ibizond would
be?"
"The Glorious Empire needs Ibizond," Fist said calmly. "Therefore, at the right
time it will take Ibizond." He shrugged. "But not today." He looked around the
main plaza curiously. "Let's find someplace to eat and then keep going. We could
make it to Korga tonight, I bet."
"Too far," Zilla said. "Close to thirty miles, and it's hilly."
"And you'd do well not to travel after dark," someone said behind them.
All three spun around, hands going to their swords but not drawing. The man
behind them was tall, with gray-streaked reddish brown hair and the indefinable but
unmistakable air of a gladiator.
"Me and Zilla grew up around Korga," Aghtamar said. "We know the area. And
we're all gladiators, Lord Protectors. Sure, there's more risk at night than by day,
but--"
"There are new problems on the road," the man said. "My name's Cadal, gladiator
from Murska, and I'd be glad to tell you about them. The food at the Red Cow is
good," he added, gesturing toward a modest inn. "I'll buy dinner. And then I have a
proposition for you."

Korga and vicinity:
Aghtamar pushed back her bowl with a sigh of satisfaction. She'd probably eaten
better venison stew, but she couldn't remember when. "So tell us about the new
danger on the road here," she invited.
Cadal drained his tankard of ale and folded his arms on the table. "We don't
know what it is," he said, "but there have been more than a dozen travelers' deaths
between here and Mirkon [the next town east of Korga] that can't be accounted for by
any of the usual hazards. All but one instance were lone travelers, all were moving
after dark. A courier, a couple of traders, the rest we're not sure about. Two
female, the rest male. Karnhorns, mostly, but three Harkenes, a couple westerners,
Convincian, maybe. All armed, four mounted and the others on foot."
"A mixed lot," Fist of Kjarran said, nodding. "Nothing to link them together--"
"Except the way they died. The doctor here that examined some of the bodies
called it 'heart failure'." Cadal grimaced. "Those of us that have been patrolling
the road and found the bodies call it 'dead of fear'. The looks on their faces...."
He shook his head slightly. "Whatever they met terrified them. All but the oldest
two had run long and hard before they dropped. We figure the oldest ones simply died
on the spot where they met...whatever it was."
"Not a lot to go on, if you're thinking we can help you hunt this killer," Zilla
said critically. "I suppose there aren't any tracks?"
"Nothing we can be sure of," Cadal admitted. "My idea is to bait them--send a
likely traveler along the road after dark and follow, hoping to come on something."
"Damned big risk you're asking your decoy to take," Aghtamar pointed out.
"Yes, that's why I only want Lord Protectors on this."
"I can do this," Fist of Kjarran said briskly. "For the glory of the Empire and
in the service of Kjarran and His Daughter Jayde, I will serve as bait to lure out
this killer who preys on innocent travelers!"
Zukal and vicinity:
It was harder to get Veleks into the boat than Ghenis had expected. Dead, it
might have been awkward, but alive...the little thief turned suddenly hysterical,
shrieking and weeping, trashing wildly, and begging not to be given to "the burning
eyes and flashing teeth." Ghenis finally had to knock Veleks out so that he and
Harlund drag him into the rowboat.
"He's nuts," Harlund growled, leaning into his oars as he drove the boat back
toward the shore. "Burning eyes and flashing teeth. Sounds like some kind of kid's
nightmare. He do some kind of drugs?"
"Veleks? No. He's got a few bad habits, but not drugs. He must have seen
something real...but maybe not really what he thinks he saw."
"He couldn't've seen something like that, not on the beach he couldn't. There
aren't any monsters in the woods around here." Harlund paused and looked around
uneasily, looked down into the water, which was filling with the shadows of sunset
faster than the sky was. "Might be different if he'd been in a boat to start with,"
the beach walker muttered. "He might've seen something over the water...."
"Veleks can't swim and had no boat. He was not on the water," Ghenis said
firmly. "Besides, I found what are probably his tracks. He was on the shore road
and left it to run toward the beach, and I do mean run--flat out. Something
terrified him. Veleks is no hero, but he wouldn't run without a reason."
Harlund opened his mouth to argue further, then looked at Ghenis and shut it
again. Smart move.
"Just get us to shore, man. Then I'll pay you, and you can go home. It isn't
your problem."
Malcorn:
Blackie, Lord Malcorn of Malcorn, sat in his study and stared into the fire. He
was alone, and it was very late. A bottle of wine and a goblet sat on the table at
his elbow, but he didn't reach for them. Getting drunk might make him forget his
problems for the night, but in the morning, the problems would still be there, and
he'd have Shew-sized hangover to go with them. Better to pass on the wine.
Had he done the right thing in releasing the Dregur from the Silent Place? Yes.
Or at least, releasing them wasn't a wrong thing. Caging them because the Karnhorns
didn't know how to live with them and hadn't the power to kill them had been a wrong
thing. Blackie believed with his whole heart that death was better than a cage. And
he had known the risks he was taking--the risks he was subjecting everyone in the
area to--when he released the Dregur. Some innocent people would die of encounters
with the Dregur...as innocent people were dying every day at the hands of the
invaders.
Blackie's eyes went to the wine bottle. That was what haunted him, the innocent
people. Hell, even some of the invaders were innocent in all the ways that counted,
drafted from their Eastern homes at the command of some powerful lord and sent to
Alastari to fight and die. Telling himself that fewer innocents would die this way
was cold comfort.

SPY REPORT
Good day, in CHIMLEVTAL a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets
poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. I understand that The
Victory Tavern is buying the drinks for PLATOON tonight, to honor their rise to 17th
after this turns 2-0-1. Hmmm. The LORDS OF VALHALLA guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and
deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can
lead. CHIMLEVTAL welcomes a new team to our ranks, unofficially of course, for now.
But welcome nonetheless to SOUTH PARK. Let's see what you can do. And let's see,
SARCOPHAGUS fought JUSTINIAN and gained 35 points and contributed to ASSASSIN
NATION's 2-3-1. DELWYNNDWN has lost to SUBOTAI, falling 17 points, while helping
make THE NIGHTHAWKS a 2-3-0 turn. Well done, CHIMLEVTAL, the Duelmaster was this
turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps DROSS is not as thrilled, being challenged 7
times. This week's Duelmaster bout was between SHEWISH GIANT and our Duelmaster
DROSS, making a Dark Arena Challenge. Defending his title for another turn, DROSS
kept DARK ARENA's warrior, SHEWISH GIANT, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is
nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Victory Tavern uses
trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. THE NIGHTHAWKS has cause to stand
tall, as they were CHIMLEVTAL's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a
team to beat. And guess who avoided THE NIGHTHAWKS stable the most? Believe it or
not, it was THE STORMGUARDS. Anyone surprised? I don't know about you, but FREY
challenging down 22 points to WILLBENDERS' SIR CYRUS, is not really worthy of
STORMWATCH. We're not surprised to hear that FREY defeated SIR CYRUS, but I bet it
would be interesting to hear why STORMWATCH made such a challenge. In a brave
attempt, LOCO from SOLIPSISM II challenged up 18 points to fight GREYSCALES from the
THE STORMBRINGERS stable. LOCO perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was
bested by GREYSCALES and ended up with 15 recognition points. ARL HAMMERHAND of THE
STORMGUARDS had better have a good reason for challenging down 12 points in a
challenge which he won. I thought ARL HAMMERHAND showed great skill and promise when
he defeated DINGUS. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. DROSS must have surprised SOLIPSISM II this turn, after they sent him to
the Dark Arena, but the Dark Arena couldn't hold him! Banners at half mast,
warriors, SOLIPSISM II has lost SLAG, and you might say all of CHIMLEVTAL has felt
the loss, except maybe UNFIT TO BE ORCS. RASCAL has departed CHIMLEVTAL, leaving
ASSASSIN NATION without their 10-11-3 warrior. Question, just what was his team
doing at the taverns last night? Hearty mugs of ale were raised in CHIMLEVTAL today
as JUSTINIAN was bid farewell to a 16-9-0 warrior, with SARCOPHAGUS of ASSASSIN
NATION standing silent and pensive. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the
graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in CHIMLEVTAL and I've a long road ahead
of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in CHIMLEVTAL again, farewell-- Alarond
the Scribe

Abraxis -- 28 is a slow arena, dolt. Besides that, I have resigned myself to just
play this team and not worry about you. I should have known better than to mix-it up
with a pup like you in the first place. Frankly, you aren't worth the effort. --
Sylvester "Used to be Ultraist" Frothingslosh
You know...it's not very often that the Face to Face happens out about my way (yes, I
know it is more than some others get). I was planning on going to the upcoming one
in Philadelphia. Problem is, I'm just getting back from my honeymoon on that weekend
(yes, I'm getting married). Have fun, everyone! -- Ghab/Assassin Nation & the Other
Ones
We'll miss you, but congratulations! -- Ed.
Tequilla Mockingbird -- Death is part of life.... Any time an aimed blow challenges
an offensive on a team with a lot of kills what happened to Scrye Askant is in the
cards. With a name like mine, do you truly think I am meant to be long in this
world?!? I am built to do one thing, and in doing so gain the right to live another
day. -- One Hit Wonder (or maybe it should be two...)
Abyssinian -- I might just try you again without the SH. Shortsword! What was I
thinking. -- Stupid Orange
Is this a multiple choice question? -- Temp Ed.
Jaime -- You fight like you sing. Here is to good genetics. -- The Belly
Lapu -- I'm better then I look. No really. -- Hungry
Sir Pelleas -- Please challenge again. -- Bones
Ravaged -- Huh. Which one of us got the better of that random match up? -- Stigma of
unlucky
Sir Yder -- Hey! That was MY will you bent into a pretzel, and I had a HECK of a
time getting it straightened out again. Be careful when you do that. -- Kambard Murh
P.S. But my thanks for the skills. I'm sure they'll be very useful once I figure
out what to do with them. Hmm, maybe if I frame them and hang them on my bedroom
wall where I'll see them and be inspired as soon as I wake up in the morning....
Trashius -- The whammo and thudda I can take, I guess, I've seen enough of it
already. But not the invasion of my bathtub! -- Jo Ludan
Phoenicia -- Your force was too darque for me, although the skills were good. No,
wait! If I learn a lot of skills from somebody Darque, does that mean that I, too,
will become darquer? I mean, okay, if this is what's required of me, but...it's such
a surprise. (pause to grow a mustache and twirl it) Bwahaha, yes, they'll ALL be
surprised! I, Darque Mendal, will make them all regret embracing the wishy-washy
cause of Good! -- Darque Mendal Omshil
Phoenicia -- He's very impressionable. -- Jorja
Rakama -- (recoiling) An elf! We're talking major sneaky here, aren't we? Pointed
ears to eavesdrop with, snakelike curves to slide through cracks, etc? Yes, that's
what I thought. I don't know why you're allowed in the arena with REAL people like
ME, a Karnhorn and follower of Kjarran! -- Norgen Pelh
Raptor -- If you didn't like my face, you could have just insulted me. I hear that
kind of stuff all the time, and it doesn't bother me. -- Les Nayle
Hail and well met, Chimlevtal. I'm glad to be here, though I suspect the warriors on
my team are more dubious. They aren't used to serious competition, you see. It's
come as an unpleasant shock to them. -- Jorja, The Middle Way
Ed. -- Oops, looks like there are some personals from Rodeki here. All the ones
signed by Flagg should be/have been in Rodeki. -- Jorja
Justinian -- Next time I'll finish better. -- Gaelin
Sampsa -- Well done. At least I got the last chance to take away that zero. --
Dewynndwn
Rogue -- Thanks for the quick win and the skills. -- Curaecen
Greyscales -- OK you proved yourself. You're more boring than I am. -- Kirken
Ve -- Despite your best effort, I still live. -- Tobias
Delwynndwn -- Thanks for the send off challenge; at the April tournament, picked up
my Ad Master in Decise and I think that it showed in our match. -- Sampsa
Griffin -- You were absolutely relentless. I toast your fighting spirit, hazzah! --
Pekko
Blister -- You really put on the pressure; it wasn't until the very end that I felt
victory was mine. Well done. -- Inman
Magog -- You surely tested my resolve. Before I tasted victory, I bathed in my own
sweat and blood. -- Rauni
Sounds icky. -- Temp Ed.
Jorja -- Greetings and well met! I have settled in quite comfortably here, so please
allow me to show you around and help you to feel right at home here. -- Bobby Bigfoot
Vomito -- Man! You're fast! Good fight. -- Oil Can Harry
Les Nayle -- You are a T.P. Try two weapons! -- Raptor
Allo -- Sorry to disappoint all who challenged Nonfoundman, but his record earned him
the great opportunity to fight by torch light; what a lucky guy! -- Polaris
Bobby Bigfoot -- I was impressed by your noble comments in regard to the bloodfeud
opportunity you so courageously awaited--right up until I saw you sat out the
warrior. Who were you kidding? Perhaps they do "echo in the next world." -- D.D.
management
Jorja -- Welcome. -- J. of The Fad
With the arrival of South Park to Chimlevtal we have the chance to slap around fifth
graders. Be forewarned though--the minimal gravity of Alastari means those kids can
really hop! -- Good luck.
All -- I have returned to try my skill and test my strength. -- Egil, Woodpile
All -- My boys will be watching from the stands in case I start losing. But I'm not
planning on needing them. -- Ma Barker
Icelord -- You make me laugh; you call me a coward, yet you make a career of avoiding
me! Anyone who read the spy report can see who's the coward! -- ABRAXIS
Ultraist -- The crappy competition you speak of in Aruak was none other than your
buddies in the C.O.L., truth be told! -- ABRAXIS
Ultraist -- I run only the Willbenders here, Mordreds Madmen in 45, Blood Lust,
Primal Power and the Makers in 73. Rocky Horror in 74. Drews Crew in 45. Team
Slayer in 28. If you can't find me, you're not looking. Let's get it on. -- ABRAXIS
Ultraist -- You were far from neutral; you were a toadie to the C.O.L. -- ABRAXIS
All -- Sorry there was no time to put together a spotlight this turn. I will
try to do better next time. -- the Scribe
