Chimlevtal:

Tempus surfaced briefly underneath the fish market pier. He could hear
footsteps on the old planks overhead, a firm quick stride going away. Probably the
man who wanted Lord Kinnishan assassinated. Which meant he couldn't get a look at
the damned rat, couldn't follow him to see where he was going.... Well, he had two
more clues than he'd had half an hour ago: he knew that Lord Kinnishan was the
intended victim, and that the man who was ultimately hiring the assassin had contacts
in Zukal. Three clues if you counted the likelihood of the next assassin to make an
attempt being Andorian.
And always assuming he could make a clean getaway with his information.
Teledeg--and the other fellow, as well-wouldn't want him talking to someone with
authority. Lord Kinnishan, say, or Shau'nin Snowbeard. Or his own manager, The
Icelord. The Lord Protector shook his head to dismiss the long-range problems. It
was the immediate problem of making his escape that he had to think about. He peered
out at as much of the harbor as he could see. Nothing in sight that looked like an
immediate ally. But Teledeg couldn't have gotten a good look at him. And he knew
that there was a ship coming in from Zarens; it would be approaching the harbor in
the next hour or two. If he could get out beyond the breakwater and attract the
attention of the ship's lookout--from Hagrun's Rock, say--he might get them to take
him on board and land him as though he'd been out of the city for days. That might
work....
It would mean a long swim, but he'd swum farther in rougher water at need.
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
The rowboat Sidon found was a poor specimen of a type of boat that was low class
to begin with. Its chief virtue, as Master Darque well knew, was that the Dwarf had
managed to find it quickly. The half-demon manager arranged himself gingerly on a
none-too-clean seat and watched his henchman bend to the oars. "An extremely
primitive form of transport," he remarked distastefully, gripping the sides to steady
himself. "Although not, I suppose, as primitive as swimming." He turned and peered
ahead toward Hagrun's Rock, then scanned the water of the harbor. "Does it strike
you, Sidon, that there are rather a lot of waves in the harbor today?"
The Dwarf grunted. "Sometimes there are. So what?"
"Just an odd circumstance. I collect odd circumstances.... I would like to
collect The Icelord's warrior, too, but I don't see him." The manager's voice
dropped a little, growling. "You might have made a mistake in your assessment."
"Swimming under water's tricky," the Dwarf said defensively. "It's hard to keep
a straight line, 'cause you can't see. But unless he went straight to the shore,
he's out here. Hagrun's Rock is the only place he's likely to go."
"I do hope--for your sake, Sidon--that you are right."
The Dwarf grunted again and bent harder over the oars. He had powerful
shoulders and knew what he was about; they reached the Rock quickly. There was still
no sign of the swimmer they wanted to intercept, but Master Darque conceded that with
the rough water, he could be close and still not be seen.
The Hermit was waiting on the narrow arc of beach to grab the front of the boat
and pull it up high enough to ground firmly. Then he looked at them expectantly.
Sidon, who had the idea that staying on the good side of as many holy people as
possible would increase his luck, tossed the man a coin.
The Hermit looked at it, bit it, and shoved it into a pouch. "Do for you?"
Sidon turned to Master Darque enquiringly.
"Tell us about the waves," Master Darque said. He glanced eastward, away from
the land, to where the waves were coming in as long lines trailing foam. "I don't
think I've seen the water quite like this here before."
The Hermit shrugged. "Things've been odd on the bay lately."
"Bay?" Sidon looked around in confusion.
"What bay?" Master Darque asked quietly.
The Hermit shrugged again and ran one hand, joints misshapen with age and hard
use, through his untidy gray hair. "That's part of the strangeness, I guess.
Sometimes it's a bay. Or maybe it's a mirage. I dunno. Sometimes I see ships out
there that never come into the harbor. Or storms that rise up and vanish. I hear
tell that magic's going all strange, so maybe that's it." He didn't sound convinced.
Master Darque wasn't convinced, either. To be sure, the decay of the Ghean
Arcanum had produced strange secondary effects, but this seemed an unlikely one.
"Got me a crystal up on the Rock," the Hermit confided, leaning closer to the
half-demon manager and exhaling fish stew and beer. "I can see you're a magical
kinda fella, and maybe you can tell me what's wrong with my crystal, hey?"
Master Darque brightened and jumped nimbly to the shore. This just went to show
what benefits might come from doing good works, he supposed. He had set out to
Hagrun's Rock with no purpose other than to contact The Icelord's warrior and perhaps
offer him a ride back to the town...well, nothing MUCH more than that, and because of
it, he was discovering a crystal, which might be magical, that he hadn't even known
existed. If this was the sort of thing that came of a generous impulse, he might
have to try it more often.
Master Darque followed the Hermit up to his aerie at the top of the Rock. It
was the most basic of shelters, merely a shallow cave that had been extended and
"improved" with random pieces of driftwood. As residences went, it was not
impressive. But if there was a possibly magical crystal in there....
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Tempus felt solid bottom under his feet and floundered out of the waves
gratefully. He had ended up fighting an unexpected current, and the battle had been
exhausting. Especially since he spent the night just past fighting a fire. Surely
he couldn't be getting old? He was a Lord Protector, after all. Well, he'd made it
out to Hagrun's Rock, that was what counted. Now to find a place where he could
watch for a ship and hail it--
"It's about time you got here!"
At the growling voice, Tempus spun around, one hand going to his sword. He knew
that scowling Dwarf, it was one of Master Darque's thugs. And Master Darque was a
sworn enemy of his own manager, The Icelord. Gods, not a fight now, when he was
tired!
"Master Darque wants to talk to you," the Dwarf growled.
"Too bad. I've got business of my own that can't wait," Tempus retorted.
"Here on Hagrun's Rock?" The Dwarf bared his teeth in what might have been
meant for a smile. "Too bad. If Master Darque wants to talk to you, then that's
what's going to happen. What Master Darque wants, he gets, see?"
"A splendid sentiment, Sidon," a musical voice commented. "I heartily concur
with it."
White skin, red eyes, no hair, the size of a child, and dressed in yellow robes
trimmed with black. Tempus had never met Master Darque, but this being fit the
description. "What do you want?" he asked suspiciously.
"So gracious, I'm overwhelmed! I want to know what you heard when you were on
the roof of Teledeg's fish market."
Tempus scowled at the manager. He would have liked to believe that Master
Darque was the villain in the piece, but the creature had a voice too distinctive to
have been the man who had talked to Teledeg. And what harm could it do to tell?
Dangerous question; there was no telling what harm it could do. But right this
minute, sharing a little information seemed to be the best course. "Someone's paying
Teledeg to set an assassin on Lord Kinnishan."
The half-demon frowned, and the air in his immediate vicinity took on an odor of
sulfur. "I do not approve of that," Master Darque stated. "Kinnishan may not,
perhaps, be an ideal ruler, but he is not a BAD one. And any replacement would
probably be worse. This must be stopped."
Tempus closed his mouth with difficulty, then managed to say, "You want to
DEFEND the ruler of Chimlevtal?"
"Why is that so hard to believe? Chimlevtal is my home, after all, and
Kinnishan handles the mundane details of governance quite adequately. It would not
suit me to have my home city turned into a battleground."

Ibizond, Korga, and in between:

Aghtamar and Zilla had argued with Fist of Kjarran, but not for long. After
all, someone to play bait WAS needed, and he WAS a Lord Protector and therefore had
guaranteed resurrection.... The Murskan, Cadal, suggested that they all get a good
night's sleep here in Ibizond, look over the area where they wanted to set their trap
tomorrow by daylight, and then run the bait tomorrow night. This seemed such a
sensible suggestion that Aghtamar hesitated to accept it; there was sure to be an
unpleasant catch in it somewhere. But Zilla was for it, and even Fist, not one to
wallow in luxuries, agreed, so she shrugged and nodded.
They stayed at the inn where they'd eaten, the Red Cow, and it seemed to
Aghtamar that the night was endless. She dozed and woke and dozed and woke and it
was still dark. Maybe the sun had forgotten to rise. Maybe she was caught in some
magical time loop. Maybe she was worrying too much. Maybe she had insomnia. She
rolled over and thumped her pillow and tried to go to sleep again. Really asleep
this time. But there were so many things that could go wrong....
By the time morning came--reluctantly, with lots of clouds and a cold, damp
wind--Aghtamar was a rag. Squinting at the imperfect mirror in the small bedroom,
she amended that to a depressed, grumpy rag. Or hag. The kind of rag or hag that no
right-thinking gladiator would want as a companion on an adventure. She was going to
be as second-rate at adventuring as she had been in the arena. She was just working
up a really good depression when Zilla pounded on the door.
"Come on," Zilla urged, bouncing on her toes once the door was opened. "The
guys are waiting."
"Maybe it would be better if I didn't--"
"They're WAITING for us, Aghtamar. Come ON." Zilla grabbed her arm and dragged
her out into the inn's tiny hallway. "I kind of LIKE having a couple of men waiting
for us," she confided. "Even though Cadal is OLD, he must be forty or even FIFTY,
he's a very HOT-looking old man...."
At that, Aghtamar laughed. "I didn't know you had a thing for older men,
Zilla!"
"Well, he's a Lord Protector, so he won't get any older than he IS, after all,
and I bet he knows lots of INTERESTING things." She glanced sideways at her friend.
"I bet he knows some men he could introduce to you."
"Uh...Zilla, I'm not really looking for--"
"You should be. It's great exercise!"
     "Zilla!"
"Jack told me to watch out for you," Zilla said. "He likes you. I like you.
Lots of people like you. He was, we were all worried you might get depressed again.
You take things too seriously, Aghty."
     "'Aghty'?"
"What kind of nickname would YOU suggest I make out of Aghtamar? Why you ever
let your folks--or Jack if it was him--saddle you with such a mouthful of a name...."
Zilla squinted at her thoughtfully. "Maybe I'll call you 'Sunshine'. Would that be
better?"
By this time, they had arrived at the ground floor, where Fist of Kjarran and
Cadal were, indeed, waiting. "I've got horses for us all," Cadal said the moment
they appeared, "and lunches packed. Let's go, we're burning daylight here."
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Basically, the part of the Traders' Road that ran between Ibizond and Korga was
just like the parts between Korgan and Malcorn and between Ibizond and Murska.
Unpaved, rutted, hilly, muddy in the low spots, with trees crowding close on both
sides most of the way. Many of the steepest hills had been cut down to make the
grade easier, with the road passing through dirt-walled notches--great places for an
ambush, as Fist of Kjarran observed cheerfully.
Cadal nodded, but he looked gloomy. "Great places," he agreed, "but our killer
doesn't use 'em, mostly. Out of the dozen we think are victims of the same killer,
only two were attacked at a road cut like this." He looked up at the steep, muddy
banks with their shaggy topping of brush and sighed. "One in six isn't significant.
That would be too easy. Our killer doesn't seem to need ambuscades."
"But we do," Zilla said. "So, which ones do you favor, and how do you expect us
to get the killer to attack Fist where we're watching?"
"There is no way," Aghtamar muttered.
"Sure there is. Fist sets out in a group--say four people--from Ibizond about
sunset. As he approaches the spot we've picked as best for our purposes, the other
three turn back, leaving him to enter the target zone alone. So far, the killer has
never attacked a group as big as four, and besides, we can probably get enough out-
of-work gladiators from Murska, gods know there are plenty of them, to do the escort.
But my figuring is that he won't be attacked till he's alone. And if he gets beyond
the optimum area without an attack, he turns and comes back, and if he gets all the
way back through it without being attacked, we join him and call it a night and go
back to Ibizond."
"I wouldn't like to go back to the inn and leave a job undone," Fist of Kjarran
protested.
"But doing the job needs the cooperation of our killer, so we're not totally in
control of that," Zilla pointed out. "This sounds like a decent bet. Let's do it."

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Hail, Chimlevtal!

Indeed it is an honor to sit atop the pile of the greatest bunch of warriors
assembled in an arena on Alastari. It is with a tear in my eye that I leave, for
times here were grand!
For those interested I was born an 11-11-7-15-21-4-15 LU with GREAT END. and the
ability to do and take a normal amount of Damage. I am +3 in Parry. I saw action in
four tourneys, compiling a 9-3, 4-3, 2-3 and 2-3 record. Most of my career I ran a
LO/VH Dodge modified strat versus offensives, and VH/VH Lunge Mod. strat versus
defensives. It turns out that my faves are VH/MOD; LO; Init for a learn. The latter
two I already knew. My ratings are: Masters in Attack, Init, Defense. Experts in
Decise and Parry. Riposte has always been my lowest base and I still need two skills
to rate. My Init base is maxed out and my Attack and Def bases are nearly so. I
will be unable to attain a natural Adv. Master in Attack.
I will be going to Crysalis to reinforce the growing Cartel presence there.
We'll see how these Faves work out and then decide what to do at the next split.

                    Glory unto Chimlevtal,
                    Lord Protector Dross
                    Duelmaster of Chimlevtal
                    Soldier Of The Cartel

P.S. For those of you who don't know me, I was born "Moloch" and started off with an
0-3 record. My boss renamed me Dross because I was the scum that rose to the top!

                                      SPY REPORT

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to CHIMLEVTAL once again! Bein' on top is great while it lasts,
THE STORMBRINGERS. But how many friends do you have now? You know what they say
about the herd of lions who studied a judge... DARQUE FORCES moved up 11 places, to
5th. Looking for a good fight, confident, skilled, tough opponents. Well don't look
at NUMBERS GAME, cause they dropped by 13. It seems so recently people were saying
WHAMMO & THUDDA 4 U! was washed up, finished. But 3-1-0 moved them up 5. I guess
they're washed no more... CANDIES' walking tall now that they went 4-1-1 their first
time out. But we know what awaits them soon... What's with CHIMERA? He actually
beat THE STORMGUARDS' UNCAS, and walked away with 21 more points from the fight.
Laughs were big at WHAMMO & THUDDA 4 U! while they watched VOMITO clobber KAMBARD
MURH. He lost 16 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands.
Apparently CHIMLEVTAL isn't filled with as many gutless wonders as I thought. The
Dreaded Duelmaster got 6 challenges this turn! MYTH's hatred of ASSASSIN NATION
surfaced again as GRIFFIN challenged CHIMLEVTAL's top dog. I can barely restrain my
enthusiam for MYTH's outstanding member, Duelmaster GRIFFIN. Wouldn't it be nice to
have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of
convicted prisoners.
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was
THE STORMBRINGERS. The bums at THE NIGHTHAWKS couldn't face the challenges from THE
STORMBRINGERS! No excuse for that! SUBOTAI expects the easy win by going 19 points
down. SIR CYRUS will find this a hard lesson! I have to get this off my chest.
What a low dog, SUBOTAI! He can't set himself up in a real match. I was sorry to
see SIR CYRUS lose. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights
that NAPULAK gets in. She fights people like SIR VILLARS, 12 points below. I
thought NAPULAK showed great skill and promise when she bested SIR VILLARS. All
right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills,
fight dirty.
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? Are
you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

Unicorn -- I only challenged because I thought unicorns were good luck and taught
skills. You must be a myth. -- Belly

Vomito -- Way too easy for you. Time to change my strategy again. -- Hungry for a
Win

Cool Hank Luke -- Bash! Bash! Man that was quick! I guess Timmy did fulfill his
name. -- Kind Diamond

Aryan Barbarian -- I'm not sure is I should bloodfeud you or shake your hand.... --
King Diamond

Perhaps you should do both. -- Ed.

Punkin Carver -- Honourable fight, dude! -- Stan

Ma Barker -- Hit em with your purse! Hit em with your purse!

All -- I have taken the initiative to personally train and manage these kids from
Southpark. DO NOT! Attempt the take Cartman's potpie. I'm still nursing my bitten
hand. -- King Diamond

TIMMY! -- Timmy

All -- The bastards!! They killed Kenny! -- Stan

Management of Destructive Dames -- I was not kidding anyone. I only made the
decision to sit out Spatha (for tournament placement) after your entire team went
inactive for the first turn of your bloodfeud with my team. I had no way of knowing
what your plans were, and I did what was in my team's best interest. I don't think
that you know me well enough to question my courage. If you want to test it, feel
free to challenge away. As for the bloodfeud, since you obviously want your
vengeance, I offer you this: after the bloodfeud concludes, Spatha will not avoid
your team for two additional turns, one for your team's inactivity, and one for
Spatha's inactivity. I think that is a fair offer, and it is certainly more than I
am obligated to do for you. That's my offer, do what you will with it. Good luck to
you in the bloodfeud, and in all future battles in the arena. -- Bobby Bigfoot, mgr.
Sol Invictus
P.S. Why didn't you give a manager name in your personal ad, do you prefer to remain
anonymous?

Gaelon Blacktalon -- I think that you'd benefit from some con trains. -- Pekko

Oban -- Multiple ratings from a single fight is very nice! -- Inmar

Sydney Bristow -- Fine effort at the bloodfeud; good luck in the future. -- Spatha

Swayne -- Thanks for a good fight. I feel fortunate that I held it together long
enough to find an opening. -- Rauni

Ultraist -- Now it's becoming a debate! Actually, I was stating the facts about
Hannya. I watched her grow up, so I know. Your feud with Abraxis is not my concern
and my opinion on the matter is of no relevance. I have nothing against you. I even
respect you. But I won't be punked out by you, or anyone else. If I choose to
speak, I will. It's up to you whether or not you want to speak back. -- CFH,
Vendetta Cartel
P.S. The competition WAS bad in Arvat. The C.O.L. was there. That says it all.

Odysseus -- It seems that you are the one who is confused. ME: 14-10-1, 121,
current Duelmaster. You: 18-21-1, 86 career loser. Please explain this to YOUR
incompetent manager. Loser. -- Dross

Palladice -- All B.S. aside, I salute your attempt. -- Dross

Bobby Bigfoot -- Many congrats on Sampsa's feat! It was my hope that he and Dross
would meet one day. Maybe in the big leagues? -- CFH

Ice -- It isn't the dress that you want to see, it's what hangs beneath that you're
hoping to get a glimpse of. -- CFH

Polar Bear -- You like that, huh? I knew you would. That's why I wrote it. -- CFH
(grinning)

P.S. Truth be known, I like you. I jugg at you because no one else will and it's
generally the only way one can get you to write ads. Plus, I know how much Bosk and
Ice hate it! Stay scrappy!

Jorja -- Hey lady, welcome to the big C! It ain't much but we like to think of it as
"The Greatest Slow Arena on Alastari." Let us know if we can make your stay here
more enjoyable. You know, buy you a soda or supply a few free wins. You can tell by
looking at my records that I am the arena speed bag and throw away guy. -- CFH, mgr.
Solipsism/5 Below Zero

Stormguards -- Suitable or not, 5 Below Zero is better than anything your boss has
ever come up with. When it comes to original concepts, Icelord is the zero. When
you go to bed tonight pray that Ice wakes up with half the creative talent that CFH
has. Then maybe he'll be normal. -- Blue
P.S. I would tell you CFH's I.Q. but it would only make you ashamed of Ice!
P.P.S. Without looking at a dictionary I'll be ice couldn't tell you what
"Solipsism" is. But don't worry, most folks can't.

Horus -- What's up with 7th Son? -- CFH
P.S. Anytime bro, anytime.

All -- TIMMY!!! -- Timmy

Ma Barker -- Bow to Captain Chaos! -- Captain Chaos

Jolene -- Uhh. You was in my dream...and I kicked your butt...sorry. -- Stan

Them Bastards, they killed Kenny. -- Stan

Egil -- I'm not FAT! I'm big boned. -- Cartman

Ice -- That depends. If you mean something other than win just about every frivolous
award the games have to offer, T.V. for our city, graduate from and hold the throne
of the toughest slow arena in the games, well no; I guess not. -- CFH
P.S. How about the fact that I have a winning career record, a winning total versus
your alliance and, more importantly, you? You probably won't acknowledge that, but
you KNOW it's TRUE!

Ravaged -- You don't look ravaged. You look cool, calm, and collected. But if you
ARE ravaged, why, just tell me who and I'll help you ravage 'em back. -- Kambard Murh
P.S. Heck, for five skills, I'll ravage 'em for you without help.

Alt -- (heavy sigh) One of us gains a winning record, and one loses it. I suppose
it's got to be that way, but I wish it had been reversed! -- Jo Ludan
P.S. What the heck do I want with a secret admirer? That's no fun.

Glenlivit -- Tell me what you're drinking, an' I'll try it, too. -- Mendal Omshil
P.S. Maybe it'll help me be darquer.

Batista -- Can I teach, or what? Wanna go on a date, short and cute? -- Les Nayle,
the epitome of cool

One Hit Wonder -- (outraged look) You hit me TWICE! You're not supposed to do that.
-- Norgen Pelh

Ghab -- Some people just have rotten luck with F2F timings etc. Best wishes with
your marriage. -- Jorja, Middle Way

Bobby Bigfoot -- I couldn't have a better guide, I'm sure. -- Jorja

J of the Fad -- Thank you. -- Jorja

To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would
greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
