                                   Part 1--Origins
                                      Chapter 1

     "Do you have the cube, Omni?" the rasping voice echoed anticipation.  He knew
the answer before asking the question, yet these matters called for a certain
protocol.  Of course he has the cube, he would not have returned if he did not,
Master Darque thought to himself.
     "Was there ever a doubt?" The Omnimancer replied.  "Interesting cube to say the
least, demon; you want to enlighten me as to what we are going to do with it?" he
questioned.  Darque assigned the task of the cube's retrieval to him nearly one month
prior.  Acquiring the cube was the easy part of the job, his problem lay in locating
the emerald stone.  Omni did not know the stone's importance, for Darque had not
divulged much information.  However, he guessed the artifact's power with the trials
he faced to bring the stone to his cohort.  The conjuror removed a leather pouch from
his belt and placed it gently in the necromancer's taloned hands.
     "Any troubles, my friend?" the demon asked as he removed the emerald stone and
pawed it with uninhibited lust in his eyes.  The cube was small and smooth.  It fit
easily in Darque's child-like hands.  The necromancer ran his fingers across the
surface and then tested the weight of the cube.
     "Do not feign concern for my person, demon, but if you must know, yes a
plethora of trouble surrounded the search for that stone!  I began in the Chimlevtal
as you suggested, but I collected nothing but wives' tales," Omni slid into the chair
facing Master Darque's desk.  The chair was small and uncomfortable, but he continued
with his ordeal.  "After chasing a dozen leads, wiping out a Shewish settlement near
North Fork, playing hide and go seek with a group of Narsh Utur Werewolves in
Lyratilan, and getting an irritating case of frostbite in Snowbound, my search
eventually lead me to a noble's manor in Morya."
     "Morya has nobles?  Wonders never cease." Darque added without taking his
attention away from the cube.
     "Anyway, a few murders later and the stone was mine.  The Moryan authorities
will be investigating those murders for the next century," the wizard added with a
smile.
     "Excellent!  When Phantasm arrives, we will be ready to begin the ceremony,"
Darque informed The Omnimancer as he returned the cube to the leather pouch.  "I
received word yesterday and he will be joining us shortly.  I'll begin the
preparations tonight so we may proceed quickly."
     "What exactly are we invoking, demon?" Omnimancer asked with a raised eye-brow.
     Master Darque glanced upward and took notice of the conjuror seated in front of
him.  His metallic features looked comical to the demon.  Omni had once been a
handsome man.  Chiseled features, flowing blonde hair, and a charm few ladies could
resist were bestowed upon him by the gods.  Aeril Delshire was born to a merchant
family in Aradi, he was sent to the finest schools money could buy.  He did not wish
to follow in his father's footsteps because he felt his influence and chance for
advancement would be limited.  Aeril instead chose the path of the mage, and quickly
rose through the various schools of wizardry before he began concentrating all of his
efforts upon conjuration.  The young Delshire was an apt pupil and excelled in every
endeavor he began in the realm of wizardry.  However, he could not find a master who
would take him as an apprentice.  His power and potential were great, yet he was
continually turned down by the arch-mages.  While they could sense Aeril's power,
they sensed something else in the young man, something sinister.  Aeril's potential
was only exceeded by his ambition, and the arch-mages knew he would use magic with
tragic results.  Master Darque also recognized these qualities and quickly recruited
the young man.
     His knowledge and power grew under the demon's instruction.  He became a wizard
of great power that nearly rivaled his instructor.  However one fateful day, his
ambition overstepped the boundaries of his power.  Invoking an ancient scroll he had
come across in Darque's library, Aeril Delshire was changed forever.  His body was
transformed into a living conduit of elements.  Aeril was given a great power at a
greater cost.  Stripped of his humanity, Aeril was changed into a walking transmuter,
an alchemist's dream.  He gained the ability to transform himself into any inorganic
material he touched.  From the hardness of a diamond to the density of dwarven steel,
no element was beyond his power.  He became known as The Omnimancer among the wizard
conclaves for his ability as a master conjuror.  The transmutation ability offers
many welcome advantages to the summoner; however, neither Master Darque nor the
summoner have found a method to return Aeril to his human form.
     "We are invoking strong magic, my friend.  This stone combined with the
artifact Phantasm is soon to bring me will open up a gate between Alastari and my
home plane.  It will be the a gate larger than any other, even the Chaos Gates,"
Darque informed Omni with a grin.
     "Are you not worried about attracting the attention of the Greywand?"
     "She is much too concerned with the magic crisis to take notice of our
activities, but the gate will only be open for a fraction of a second.  Any mages, if
any, who may notice the opening will view it as an anomaly and nothing more."  The
necromancer levitated to the top of his desk.
     "How many creatures do you hope to bring from the outer realm with such an
opening?" Omni looked at the demon confused.
     "Dear Omni, I do not plan on gating demons in from my home realm, I'm going to
destroy it!"

Chimlevtal, Hagrun's Rock:

     Tempus, having had time now to catch his breath, contemplated the half-demon 
manager for several minutes.  Finally he said, "If you don't want your home city 
turned into a battleground, have you considered reforming your ways?  Taking up Good 
Works and...."
     Master Darque seemed to swell, his red eyes burning hotter than flame.  "You 
speak frivolously!" he snarled.  "With the defense of Chimlevtal at stake, you are 
unable to put aside earlier quarrels, even for a short time--it speaks ill of YOUR 
true motives, gladiator!"
     "My motives aren't your concern," Tempus snarled back.  "I wouldn't expect you 
to understand them.  The Icelord will--"
     "The Icelord," Master Darque returned acidly, "may see Chimlevtal embroiled in 
civil war because he is too stiff-necked to accept a temporary alliance with one who 
differs with him on some trivial points of philosophy!"
     "Hardly trivial!" Tempus answered as hotly.  "We wouldn't dirty our hands--"
     "The offer has been withdrawn," Master Darque stated.  Ice crackled in the air 
around his words.  "I will have nothing to do with someone so short-sighted and 
bigoted."  He turned to his bodyguard.  "Let us leave this place at once, Sidon.  
There is nothing for us here."
     "How 'bout if I beat him up first?" the Dwarf suggested eagerly.  "I could take 
him--"
     "I have no time for your little amusements," the manager said.  "There is work 
to be done in Chimlevtal."  He moved toward the rowboat and stepped lightly into it.  
"Come, Sidon!"
     With a growl, the Dwarf followed and pushed their rowboat off the pebbly sliver 
of beach.
     Tempus ignored their departure except to be glad of it.  Now that the demon was 
gone, he could give all his attention to more important issues, such as how he might 
identify the man from Zukal who was dealing with Teledeg for an assassin.  Teledeg 
must know, but could the fish merchant be persuaded to tell?  He had to get back to 
Chimlevtal, and as quickly as possible.
     He scanned the horizon for the ship that should be coming in from Zarens this 
morning.

Chimlevtal, in the harbor and ashore:

     Sidon rowed for several minutes in silence, then said, "Did you really think one 
of The Icelord's warriors would work with you?"
     For a long time it seemed like the demon wouldn't answer, but then he shrugged.  
"I had hoped it.  After all, we have the same goal in the short term, and it would be 
more efficient to combine our efforts."
     Sidon had his own opinion as to how "efficient" it would have been to work with 
a goody-two-shoes underfoot all the time, but he knew better than to voice it to his 
manager.  Especially when his manager was looking annoyed; Master Darque didn't like 
misjudging situations.  Well, who did?  "Maybe Tyre will have some information," he 
suggested.

     Points left dangling:  Tyre, another henchman of Master Darque, is pursuing the 
mysterious man who wants to buy Lord Kinnishan's death.  Master Janos and William 
Wallace are headed for Zarens to gather information.  And what is the Prince of Ar up

Zukal and vicinity:

     It was harder to get Veleks into the boat than Ghenis had expected.  Dead, it
might have been awkward, but alive...the little thief turned suddenly hysterical,
shrieking and weeping, trashing wildly, and begging not to be given to "the burning
eyes and flashing teeth."  Ghenis finally had to knock Veleks out so that he and
Harlund drag him into the rowboat.
     "He's nuts," Harlund growled, leaning into his oars as he drove the boat back
toward the shore.  "Burning eyes and flashing teeth.  Sounds like some kind of kid's
nightmare.  He do some kind of drugs?"
     "Veleks?  No.  He's got a few bad habits, but not drugs.  He must have seen
something real...but maybe not really what he thinks he saw."
     "He couldn't've seen something like that, not on the beach he couldn't.  There
aren't any monsters in the woods around here."  Harlund paused and looked around
uneasily, looked down into the water, which was filling with the shadows of sunset
faster than the sky was.  "Might be different if he'd been in a boat to start with,"
the beach walker muttered.  "He might've seen something over the water...."
     "Veleks can't swim and had no boat.  He was not on the water," Ghenis said
firmly.  "Besides, I found what are probably his tracks.  He was on the shore road
and left it to run toward the beach, and I do mean run--flat out.  Something
terrified him.  Veleks is no hero, but he wouldn't run without a reason."
     Harlund opened his mouth to argue further, then looked at Ghenis and shut it
again.  Smart move.
     "Just get us to shore, man.  Then I'll pay you, and you can go home.  It isn't
your problem."
                       ***     *****     ***     *****     ***
     Ghenis had the idea that it would have been harder, maybe impossible, to get rid
of Harlund at any time earlier in the day.  But it was sunset, and the beach walker
seemed to have a strong aversion to being out on the shore at night.  Which probably
meant that the gladiator would be wise to get himself and Veleks off the shore before
dark, too.  Besides, he didn't want to meet his henchman's "burning eyes and flashing
teeth" with Veleks on his hands either unconscious or hysterical.
     He draped the little thief over the saddle of his rented horse and glared at the
beast.  It probably wasn't a bad horse, as horses went, but neither was it
outstanding in any way--it seemed unlikely, for instance, that it would take to
carrying double.  Which meant he himself was going to have to walk.  He toyed again
with the idea of buying a horse, a really GOOD horse.  But, as at other times, he
also thought about how much it cost to keep a horse in the city, whether he was
riding it or not.  His resources weren't infinite.  And he didn't really leave the
city and NEED a horse that often, so it wouldn't be a savings, not really.
     By the time Ghenis had reached this point, a familiar one, in his thoughts, it
was twilight and he was back on the coast road, leading the horse.  He paused before
stepping out into the open.  By the evidence of the tracks, Veleks had been on the
coast road in the dark when he met his monster.  Maybe it would be better to get
under immediate cover instead of heading straight back to Zukal tonight.  He'd passed
an abandoned farmstead--courtesy of the invasion, most likely--on his way to the
beach to meet Harlund.  It wasn't any palace, but it would provide shelter and a
defensive position, and it was nearby, a mile, maybe a mile and a half away.  He set
off in that direction, crossing the road and plunging into the brush along an
overgrown track.
     The farmstead was as Ghenis remembered it, a stone house with half a roof, two
or three wooden sheds that had mostly collapsed, a cluster of unpruned fruit trees.
He led the horse right into what had been the main room of the house and dumped
Veleks onto the ground.  By the dark powers, the little thief had better have
something useful to report after all this trouble!  Veleks could sleep now, but by
morning he'd better be coherent.
                       ***     *****     ***     *****     ***
     Ghenis sat over the fire he'd made from scraps of lumber and watched the full
moon ride across the sky.  The night seemed long for the time of year, but that was
subjective, he knew.  It was about midnight now, with the moonlight turning the
landscape into silver and soot.  There had been owls hooting earlier, some other kind
of night birds, rustlings outside the farmhouse that had nothing to do with the wind,
but the night was silent now.  He touched the amulet he wore under his shirt,
wondering if he would see Veleks' monster tonight.  That would be...interesting.
     A howl?  There were wolves around the delta country, they'd come down out of the
hills after the invaders had devastated the area.  A chorus of howls, must be a pack.
His horse was moving restlessly.  It had a right to be uneasy, a pack of wolves was
no joke.  Ghenis wished briefly that he had a crossbow, but he didn't.  He drew his
sword and put more wood on the fire, checked to make sure that the remaining walls of
the old house would protect him from the sides and rear.
     Another howl, closer, almost a hound-like baying.  Other wolf voices answering.
Definitely a pack, hunting in the moonlight.  He touched his amulet again.  The dark
powers would not protect him if he stupidly put himself in the way of danger.  Which
he had not done tonight, he had prudently gotten off the road and taken a defensible
shelter.  With one hand on his amulet and the other on his sword, he waited.
     Shadows moved in ways that wind and trees could not account for.  They gathered
around the shell of the farmhouse; he glimpsed them through the empty doorway and the
gaps in the wall.  The shadows blinked at him with eyes that were not burning but
cold as the moon overhead.  Wolves.  Big wolves, given how far off the ground those
pale eyes were.  A lot of big wolves.  But they weren't trying to get at him.  More
kept arriving, causing an ongoing stir of shadows.  He didn't try to count them.
Didn't really want to know how many wolves there were out there.
     And then, suddenly, there was something else, with eyes of flame and a spear
tipped with icy moonlight.  Human in shape, more or less, and mounted on something
that might be a horse but probably wasn't.  It lifted a horn and blew, and the sound
was a wave of fear.
     Veleks' monster.

Riztab:

     With all the snow of the winter just past, the lake was higher than usual.  At
least two feet higher, Spymaster Torric guessed, looking at the water that now stood
waist high in the doorway of the old arena records building.  He hadn't liked going
in there to hunt for old records when the water was barely up to his knees.  Now...
no.  No way he was going in there; anything could be hidden by that dark water.
     "What idiot made the decision to leave the records down there, anyway?" Jorja,
manager of Sweet Magic, asked.  "It's so stupid!"
     Torric shrugged.  "Gladiators and managers don't have the copyright on stupid,"
he said mildly.  "I'm not sure if it was Arenamaster Rillion or First Citizen Makrok
who made the decision, but the other one concurred in it."
     "Sounds like maybe the both had something to hide," Garfield, manager of Arena
Felines, murmured.  "I wonder what?"
     "Don't we all," Torric responded.  That Rillion tA and Makrok should have a
secret they had succeeded in hiding offended him.  He was supposed to be able to find
things out, and so far he hadn't scratched the surface on that.
     "Are the records even THERE?" Garfield asked.  "Maybe Rillion tA just said
they're stored down here to keep you from finding out that they're gone."
     "They were here a little while ago."  Torric frowned.  "Four years?  Five?
Something like that, I think--but I know the records still existed back then,
whenever, because I consulted them to find out about the earliest teams here.  For
Sleepy, that was.  Then something came up--the invasion, I think?  Anyway, I didn't
go back.  But--"  He jumped as a crazy howl floated over the water.  "I hate coming
here so late in the day," he muttered, glancing anxiously to the west.  The sun was
slipping behind a bank of clouds.
     "If somebody's messing around in the records storage, late in the day is the
time to watch for him.  Be glad we can't see in the dark and watch after sunset!"
Jorja advised.
     "Huh.  I wish now I hadn't mentioned that Jaguar saw someone down this way."
Garfield eyed the dark water with disfavor.  "Better I should have stayed at the
guildhouse and whacked him a couple of times for wandering around where he shouldn't
be."
     The howl came again, from far out over the lake.  A chorus, several voices
saluting the coming night.
     "Loons," Torric said uneasily.  "We always have some loons on this lake.
Horrible birds."
     "It sounds more like wolves to me," Jorja countered, "or even hounds."
     "Not on the lake!"
     "I know, but--"
     Another chorus of howls, this time accompanied by a deep-throated hunting horn.
     "It IS hounds!"  Garfield backed up a couple of steps.  "I don't like dogs."
     "And I don't like anything that can hunt on the surface of the lake," Jorja
agreed.  She backed up with him.  Spymaster Torric was already behind them and edging
farther back.  "But I'd like to know what it is."
     "It's us cats that are supposed to be curious," Garfield reminded her.
     "Yeah, but it kills you cats.  Don't want that--who'd I have to talk to?"  She
stiffened, staring out over the water intently.  With the sun sinking into the clouds
and the forest shadowing the lake anyway, it was hard to be sure, but she thought
something--bigger than any water bird--was moving out there.
     The horn blew once more, a long note with more chilling menace in it than
anything either manager had heard.  The horn call was backed by the baying of the
unnatural pack.  The twilight took the shape of a pack of tall hounds and three lean
horsemen sweeping forward across the glassy surface of the water.
     "They're headed for the old records building," Garfield noted in a steady voice.
"I don't think I want to hang around to welcome them."
     "Right."  Jorja joined his retreat.  She shivered a little in the night air.
"This calls for strong drink in a warm, crowded tavern."

Ibizond, Korga, and in between:

     The sun was low in the sky, less than an hour from setting, Fist of Kjarran
calculated.  He glanced at his companions, a hastily assembled group of gladiators
from Murska and hunters from Ibizond.  They had all heard of the killer that stalked
this stretch of road at night--Cadal had insisted on telling them, just to make sure
they all knew, which Fist thought was a mistake--and they were nervous.  Well, it was
time for them to turn back, and their numbers should protect them from attack.
Cadal, with Aghatamar and Zilla, were somewhere ahead, waiting in ambush to attack
the killer if the killer attacked him, Fist of Kjarran.  Not a bad plan, he conceded
privately, even if it had come from a Murskan semi-barbarian.  The man was almost as
good as a true Karnhorn in his thinking....  But Cadal hadn't taken into account the
possibility that the killer might take one look at him and sheer off.  Fist caressed
the hilt of the sword at his side.  Even if the killer had never heard of him, the
Lord Protector knew that he was an impressive, even daunting, sight.  A stir among
his companions drew his attention outward again.
     "About time we turned back," one of the men said.  He seemed to be the leader,
what was his name...Finn, that was it.  "Most of these people aren't Lord Protectors,
and if the killer gets them, they're just plain dead."
     Fist nodded.  "Yes, you should have time to get back to Ibizond before dark," he
agreed.  "And we certainly don't need more deaths along here."
     They all came to a stop.  "Thing is, I don't like leaving you on your own," Finn
went on.  He looked uncomfortable about the whole situation, but of course he had no
belief in Kjarran to sustain him.  "I could stay...."
     "A generous offer," Fist responded, clapping him on the back.  It was good to be
reminded that even non-believers had courage and honor.  "But I'm supposed to be
alone, to be tempting bait for the killer.  That is the way it's planned, you know.
We can't change the plan at this late hour!"
     "I know," Finn agreed gloomily, "but I don't like it.  Well...I guess we turn
back now.  Good luck!"  He gestured to his group, and they turned back readily, even
eagerly, toward Ibizond, sturdy walls, lights, and companionship.  With a last
salute, Finn followed them, leaving Fist of Kjarran alone on the road.
     Fist of Kjarran watched them go and smiled to himself as he turned to go toward
Korga.  That was the best thing about adventures; you made new friends, met good
people you would never have encountered in your regular life.  Doing this service for
the people of the area, ridding the road of its killer, was a good thing, a worthy
effort, but making new friends was a warmer pleasure.  Whistling, he strode eastward
toward the prepared ambush.

Near Malcorn:

     Blackie, Lord Malcorn of Malcorn, stood next to the ancient stone and waited for
the moon to rise.  It would be full tonight, and he knew, because he knew most of the
natural world around Malcorn, that when it reached a certain height above the
horizon, it would shine through the hole in a more distant rock and strike squarely
onto the face of the rock beside him, revealing carvings that had been old when the
first Lord Malcorn came to this land.  The records of his ancestors said that the
Dregur were accustomed to gathering here when the moon was just so.
     "I must be insane," Tiljanz muttered behind him.
     "Courage and a sense of responsibility often looks like madness," Blackie
agreed, "even to the people exhibiting it.  You didn't have to come here tonight, but
you felt it was the right thing to do.  I can respect that in a man.  A lot."
     "Will it do any good?" the young Karnhorn asked curiously.  "We've turned the
Dregur loose, and I'd think it hard if not impossible to rein them back in."
     "We turned them loose under terms," Blackie said.  His voice hardened, becoming
the voice of the Lord of Malcorn.  "They have not kept those terms.  They were to
attack only those who came here following Inzolas.  That a few innocents might get
caught in that net by accident was...almost inevitable.  But some of the Dregur have
been actively hunting those not indicated by the terms of their release."  He was
silent for a long moment, then shrugged.  "I'm not certain that we can put an end to
these...excesses.  But I am very certain that if we don't protest, the situation will
become worse.  A failure to protest will be seen as an admission of weakness."

Near Zukal:

     Ghenis grimaced at the wave of fear but set himself to defend his shelter,
himself, his horse, and Veleks.  The fear, he realized after a moment, was something
outside himself, something the monstrous hunter was attempting to impose on him.
That knowledge did not lessen the icy waves coming at him, but it let him set it away
from himself, make a space between fear and thought.  It would not find him an easy
victim.
     There was what seemed like a very long silence, with Ghenis in the ruined house
beside his fire, and the icy-eyed shadows outside.  The shadows seemed to be waiting
for something--for him to flee, screaming, probably.  And to be disconcerted by his
failure to do so.
     Ghenis reached up to touch his amulet again, then paused before his fingers
reached the cool stone.  It looked like he could handle this on his own, so better
not to invoke the dark powers.  But should he speak, demand what this shadow wanted
of him, or wait and let it be first to break the silence?  Better to wait; in a
contest of nerves, the first to break silence lost points.  He didn't have any
points, whatever they might be in this context, to spare.
     Sooner than he expected, a voice came out of the night.  It was cold, and
hollow, and deep as a cave, sounding distant, somehow, or not quite real.  Oh, it was
real, Ghenis knew that--out of the corner of his eye, he saw his horse flinch at the
sound.  But it was hard to imagine that any creature of flesh and blood might produce
such a voice.
     "Why do you not flee?"
     "Flee?  You think I should run away?"  The gladiator put as much surprise in his
voice as he could.  "Why?  I've got a fine location here, shelter from the wind and
rain, a fire for light and warmth.  Why should I leave before morning?"
     "Do you not fear me?  You should."  The voice dropped to a deeper, darker tone.
"I could rip life and soul from your puny mortal flesh--"
     "Sounds unpleasant," Ghenis agreed.  "But I'm a Lord Protector, and the Greywand
has a deal with Ahringol--he doesn't get to keep us Lord Protectors.  We get
resurrected on a regular--"
     "Ahringol!"  The name crackled like thunder in the darkness.  Scornful thunder.
"That foolish child?  These young gods have no sense of dignity, trafficking with
wizards as though they were mortal merchants!  Ahringol and Greywand are nothing to
me, what I take, I keep."
     "If you say so," the gladiator responded.  The statement that Ahringol, who had
a deal concerning gladiators, was not involved was disconcerting, but this was not
the time to show it.  "But if you could come here and get me, you'd already have done
it.  What's stopping you?" he added curiously.  "The fire, the steel, the fact that
I'm not afraid?"
     "Why should I tell you anything?"  The voice sounded annoyed now.  Almost sulky.
"You think too much."  It dropped to a note of menace.  "But one night you will be
without shelter, and then we will see what your brave words really mean."
     There was a stir in the shadows, a rushing wind of movement, and then Ghenis had
the night to himself.

                                      SPY REPORT

     So why do I have this bag over my head?  Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and 
I'm going to give you a spy report!.  We now have a new top team for all of you guys 
to dogpile on.  DARQUE FORCES now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep 
it.  Take a look at SOUTH PARK's act, as they have a 4-1-0 week and gain 13 places in 
the team ranking.  Rising in the ranks like a loaf of armored bread (okay, I admit 
it's corny) is WOODPILE, who swept up 13 places in the ranks.  Take a look at LEGION 
OF CHAOS 2's act, as they have a 3-2-0 week and gain 13 places in the team ranking.  
DARQUE FORCES is no joke as it posted a 4-1-0 week advancing from 5th place to 1st 
place.  Leg lag?  Cart sickness?  Poor fare at inns on the way to CHIMLEVTAL?  
Whatever the cause, JUZTIZ HAMMERZ will no doubt improve on their record.  Hey 
everybody, watch out for DELWYNNDWN, who flew up 36 points in the rankings after 
mashing GENERAL MOTORS like a melon.  Keep your eye on this guy.  And falling like a 
basher in the top ten was VOMITO, who dropped 15 points after a disappointing (to say 
the least) bout with GAELIN BLACKTALON.  Try as hard as the MYTH stable might, they 
were unable to find their warrior (and ex-Duelmaster) GRIFFIN before this week's 
fights.  In front of all the crowds, GILGAMESH took the Duelmaster's crown for his 
own.  I give the bum two weeks.  Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a 
bigger halberd!   
     But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!  
Did you hear that THE STORMGUARDS was most avoided team this week?  Well, knowing the 
personal hygiene of THE STORMGUARDS' warriors, I'm not surprised!  And you guys like 
to boo me?  Well, unsling your rasberries, cause DARQUE FORCES beats feet every time 
THE STORMGUARDS smiles at them.  Try farming, eh?  And who is this PALLADICE you ask, 
with 86 points and a 18-27-3 record.  Ooh, the tales I could tell!  Was it guts or an 
overtaxed mental capacity that had PHOENICIA challenge up 27 points in the rankings 
to take on PALLADICE?  To the crowd's chants of 'Bo-zo bo-zo bo-zo', PALLADICE was 
taken out by the lower-ranked PHOENICIA.  (Maybe it's time to think Dark Arena?).  
Well, it looks like SUBOTAI wasn't happy with last turn's rank, so he went for broke 
by challenging up 26 points.  No guts, no glory.  A Carrion Bird Sellout:  SUBOTAI 
13-11-0 fights SIR YDER 16-7-0.  (BYOB) Can any one out there say 'weasel'?  Oh well, 
just saying KRAC D'CHEVALIERS will do.  He challenged 20 points down to trash 
DEE-DEE.  Definition of petty:  KRAC D'CHEVALIERS defeated DEE-DEE, a mismatch of 20 
points.  Getting lots of flowers from sympathetic fans was SODOM, who was 
successfully challenged by FREY who had a mere 23 points more than SODOM.  Definition 
of petty:  FREY overcame SODOM, a mismatch of 23 points.   
     Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day 
drinking to their memory.  Better tanked than dead!  Big deal, so PI got mashed in 
the Dark Arena.  With his face he was more at home with the trolls than with us. 
(Waka waka).  This week 6-8-1 CLAMOR was sent to the Dark Arena.  I know a lot of 
fighters with similar records who might take notice of this.  Carrion Bird Cinematic 
Humor:  LAPU-LAPU II:  THE REMATCH.  The audience likes blood and there was plenty of 
it covering GENERAL MOTORS as he was driven to an early grave by DELWYNNDWN of the 
THE NIGHTHAWKS.  For those of you who missed it, Death showed up, grabbed CURAECEN by 
the ear and took him away to a place where he won't need a coat.  Yes, and another 
'Belly up' warrior silhouette goes on top of the THE NIGHTHAWKS guildhouse this week, 
as DELWYNNDWN dispatched GENERAL MOTORS.  Good going!  Remember:  alliances are 
great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens.   
     Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in CHIMLEVTAL have no 
sense of humor.  Or maybe that they were senseless.  C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some

                 ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
     The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari.  Such an epic demands a sequel.  Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
     Where?  Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow).  When?  The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19.  How can you get into the action?  Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
     Rules:  This time around the rules are very simple.  Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points.  Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points.  Points are doubled for
kills.  All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game.  Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
     Prizes:  To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it.  Figure it will
be something pretty good.  But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
