Chimlevtal:
"I heard enough to know that the agent came from Arvat," Tempus finished, "and
maybe ultimately from Zukal." With their managers on Polaris, the Lord Protectors
had met to go over the problem of the assassin who threatened Lord Kinnishan and
determine how to deal with it themselves.
"Then we will go to Arvat, and if necessary to Zukal," Premysl Otokar said.
"That is given. It is our duty and privilege to guard this city and its ruler. The
only question is how best to go about it." He glanced around at the other warriors,
who nodded agreement.
"It will be a great riding," Master Janos noted. His fingers moved a little as
though touching the strings of a bard's harp. "A great tale, perhaps even an epic.
The Prince of Ar will regret not being here for it...."
"His work in Monuntial is important," Tempus answered. "We couldn't call him
away from it--we have to know the intentions and abilities of the Usurper."
"Speaking of intentions and abilities...." Bellerophon smiled a little as the
others reacted in surprise; he had been silent for so long that they had forgotten he
was present.
His closest companion, Skirnir, turned to him. "You think SHE is involved? She
has no interests in Chimlevtal!"
"But we followed her here, so she must have found such interests."
Skirnir's fingers tightened on the grip of his sword. "We should have killed
her when we had the chance--"
"She was our comrade then, and we could not have killed her without imperiling
our mission." Bellerophon ran his fingers slowly along the horsehair crest on his
helm. "She has done no harm to any, that we could see, here in Chimlevtal."
"Who are you talking about?" Tempus demanded before Skirnir could answer.
"Tamea Soulkeeper," Skirnir answered, scowling. "A witch, evil--"
"A demon, I think," Bellerophon said. "At least, I think some demon blood flows
in her veins, if she is not wholly so."
Now Tempus scowled. "There are others with demon blood in Chimlevtal," he
began.
"She has not been in contact with anyone here," Bellerophon answered. "Not
beyond the innkeeper where she rented a room, and the waiter where she has been
eating. As well assume two people are conspirators because they're both Harkene, or
Kannar."
"That is true," Master Janos said, before Tempus could speak. "But there are
some races that are more prone to certain activities than others. However, we are
straying from our subject--the assassin. The threat to Lord Kinnishan comes from
Arvat and Zukal, you say?"
"Arvat, certainly," Tempus agreed, "with a possibility that the roots are in
Zukal."
"Then let us make that our immediate concern."
Elsewhere in Chimlevtal:
"Why didn't he come to me directly?" Lord Kinnishan demanded. "It seems rather
suspicious that he--"
Shau'nin Snowbeard shook his head. "No, it's some gladiatorial political thing.
Not important to us at this time. It's the information that counts, and I do not
think he would have been fool enough to give false information. His concern with
maintaining stability in Chimlevtal seems genuine."
Kinnishan frowned but shrugged. "You have more to do with the gladiators than I
do, so I'll take your word for it. An unruly element in our society, in truth, but
as loyal and valuable as any other. But as to the information--that the assassin was
sent from Arvat--"
"Duke Arrnet of Arvat would not be party to such a thing," Kinnishan said
firmly.
"Duke Arrnet does not know all that goes on in the town," the old Chancellor
countered. "Since the Invasion, things have been different there. True, the Duke's
power has been restored to some extent, unlike the situation on Barikala, but the
influence of Bey Sekahos, who now rules Zukal, remains strong in Arvat. I feel
certain that much goes on in the delta which Duke Arrnet doesn't even guess at."
"We need to do more than guess what goes on there," Kinnishan countered. "We
must KNOW. Agents must be sent to discover the facts of this assassination plot and
of other matters which will weigh on Chimlevtal." He smiled thinly. "Let us send
gladiators...."
Monuntial:
The door closed softly behind him. The Prince of Ar turned and examined his...
accoster. A woman, he saw with surprise, nearly six feet tall, and she moved like a
warrior. A very accomplished warrior. "What do you want to talk about?"
"How to coordinate our efforts," she said briskly. "I can tell by the places
you've gone and the questions you've asked that you are the enemy of Nishtar and
Quelsarrain." She smiled grimly. "And an enemy of my enemies is my friend. I am
Tyrai. I used to be the Arenamistress here."
"Coordinating our efforts implies a common goal," Ar said. "Mine is simply to
gather information. I am not, myself, an insurrectionist here."
Tyrai smiled grimly. "I am rebellious enough for both of us. Here is the
information I have--in brief, since I assume you don't want the details of who is
collaborating with the Usurper, who is hiding Loyalists, and so on." She paused for
a moment, as though to marshal her information. "The Invasion, in this part of
Alastari, was originally under the command of Pasha Arjuna, who has since cast off
his Eastern allegiances and become ruler of Zarens--"
"I know Arjuna," the Prince interrupted.
"Good! Then perhaps you can answer a question for me: Will he intervene to
curtail his former subordinate, Bey Nishtar?"
Ar shrugged. "I don't know. Perhaps. He's been busy so far simply
consolidating his position in Zarens. He has the support of most of the nobles
there, but--"
"But there are always a few who think THEY should be the ruler, not some
stranger. Understood. But Nishtar and the Usurper, especially Nishtar, do not
intend to stop with controlling the Monuntial Peninsula. Nishtar has imperial
ambitions, and he's been negotiating something with Morya, even making overtures to
Dullens and Khalani. As for the lesser states immediately to the south of Zarens..."
she shrugged, "would you want to bet your life on their decision, if Nishtar offers
them an alliance?"
"No. And if I were Lord Kinnishan of Chimlevtal, I wouldn't make that bet,
either. I see that we have more to work together on than I had expected." He sat on
one of the two stools which, with a rough table, were the room's only furnishing.
"Tell me more, Arenamistress."
Readers, this situation is going to require prompt action by gladiators--lots of
gladiators. Volunteers are sought. A personal to that effect, or a diplo to Scribe,
will do it. Thanks.

Malcorn:
The Prince of Malcorn listened carefully as Fist of Kjarran and his companions
described the monster on the road to Murska, what it had done up till now and how
they had dealt with it. When Fist repeated Cadal's statement that the matter was not
settled and could not be settled in simple combat, the prince sighed and nodded.
"That's true," he admitted. "The dregur can be driven off with steel, but they can't
be finally settled that way. It takes magic to bind and unbind them, because an
essential part of their nature is magical."
Stiffly, Aghtamar said, "We heard that it was you who set them loose
originally--"
"For what I considered good and sufficient reason, yes, I did," Malcorn agreed.
"How many invaders did you encounter on the road here from Korga?"
"Invaders?" The Korgan woman shook her head, puzzled. "None. I hear they're
pulling out all along the coast, going back to their homelands, I suppose, and about
time!"
"About time," Malcorn agreed. "It was the dregur who finally convinced them of
that. Not all dregur are criminals like the one you fought, probably no more than
might be found in a similar group of humans. I made an agreement, which the
responsible leaders of the dregur entered into fully and fairly. They will help us
deal with the few among them who are criminal."
"They'll...help?" Zilla asked faintly. "Wonderful. Just wonderful."
"They said they'd clean up their own snakes." The gladiators turned to peer
into the dark corner. The man sitting there, who had been so silent he hadn't been
noticed, was plainly a Karnhorn. A Karnhorn of a familiar type--by his clothing,
which was fashionable but not highly so, and very plainly made, a man of the lower
ranks of the nobility, and impoverished, Aghtamar decided. Probably a minor
bureaucrat. Which made his presence here, on terms of familiarity with the Prince of
Malcorn, a puzzle. Not her puzzle to solve, she hoped.
"I know they did, Tiljanz, and I believe they intend to do so," Malcorn replied.
"But I don't see any harm in providing them with...witnesses to their fulfillment of
the agreement."
"To make sure they have no second thoughts?" Tiljanz asked. He sounded a little
amused, but only a little. "No harm in that," he agreed. "I shall certainly go
along to see that the terms of the agreement are met."
"No offense intended," Fist said quickly, "but this will be a job for warriors.
You don't look like--"
"I am not a warrior," the young Karnhorn answered calmly. "And I take no
offense at your warning, intended as it is to preserve my life. But life is not
enough, there must be self-respect, as well."
"Tiljanz al Burgos is as steady a man as you'll find," Malcorn cut in. "He
won't run, and he won't get in your way. We'll take him with us."
"With...us?" Aghtamar asked faintly.
"Yes, I'm coming, too," the Prince of Malcorn answered.
Fist of Kjarran had expected to leave immediately, or at least first thing the
next morning. But two full days passed before Lord Malcorn and the Karnhorn
bureaucrat were ready to go. Two days during which he considered going without them.
But there were always several Shews, large, Lord Protector Shews, standing between
him and the door when those thoughts came to him.
And then when they did finally set out, Fist of Kjarran, Aghtamar, Zilla, Cadal,
Malcorn, and Tiljanz al Burgos, Fist found himself wishing that some of those big,
tough-looking Shews were coming, too.

Zukal:
Ghenis threw down the handful of papers in disgust. Invoices for the purchase
of black candles and sacrificial knives, chickens, rabbits...potatoes? An angry note
from the man in charge of the cult's storeroom, demanding an investigation to
determine what had happened to three yards of black cloth and a pound of onions that
should have been there and weren't. A requisition for a cushion "to kneel on while
praying"--gods! Members of dark cults were supposed to be TOUGH. All these
pettifogging little details were an insult to the whole IDEA of a dark cult. He had
a dark suspicion that Pelishtekan had deliberately dumped this work on him, this
FILING, to get back at him for something. The Ferencian was always "getting back at
people," and often for the slightest of slights. It just showed you what kind of
people Easterners were!
Ghenis looked at the papers that were now scattered on the floor of his cubicle
and came to a decision. He had had enough. He walked out into the hall, taking care
to tread on as many of the papers as he could in the process. These "administrative
details" were the Ferencian's doing, but there might, still, be a proper dark god at
the head of the cult. He would find out, and if there was such a deity, he would
give it proper worship, with blood--and not chicken or rabbit blood--and dark deeds.
And if not...Pelishtekan would find out that Hell had NOTHING like the fury of a dark
cultist scorned.
Ghenis began to consider ways in which he might discover the truth at the heart
of the cult.
Elsewhere in Zukal:
Jorja rubbed her forehead tiredly, which didn't do a thing to relieve the
headache. She wasn't sure just how SHE had been appointed to organize the overthrow
of Sekahos, one of Inzolas' men and the current ruler of Zukal. What business was it
of hers? She was Adantri, dammit. She sighed. Doreg's doing, probably. Doreg
was--or had been--one of the Bandit Princes of Zukal. Their association had been
brief; she hadn't even liked the man much. But apparently that was enough. By
Mantor's blazing sword, it was MORE than enough.
If getting rid of Sekahos was what it took to shut up the yammering Bandit
Princes, then she would do it.
The first thing she needed was information. Spies. She began to go over the
list of gladiators she might call on for assistance.
Somewhere between Veastian and North Fork:
Emir Kyreses of Veastian shrugged and sighed. "I know. You meet the Mad
Khaliv's minions on land, and I have no doubt they're a major problem. But--"
"AND we shelter YOU from them," Gorich of North Fork cut in. "WE bear the
burden of his demon soldiers, not--"
"We meet them at sea," Kyreses countered. "Most of our ships are destroyed or
dare not return from southern ports, no sailors can be found who will ship out of--or
into--Veastian. To say nothing of the damage this has done to our economy, we--"
"Something must be done." Gorich glared at Kyreses, daring him to counter THAT
statement.
The Karnhorn did not. "I agree. But I don't know what will answer our needs
best. To kill the Mad Khaliv is obvious, and it MAY be enough...or it may simply
free all the demons he's bound to his service."
"Aye." The swampman was silent for a moment. Then he shrugged. "But at least
it's a place to start. But to assassinate the Mad Khaliv will take men very nearly
as mad as he is."
"Gladiators," Kyreses said. "That is who we must send."
This is a general call for warriors who want to be in adventures. Any warriors from
any arenas, Basic or Advanced, any region, are welcome. A personal or a diplo to
Scribe will do the trick.

SPY REPORT
So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Take a look at SINGLE MALTS' act, as they have
a 5-0-0 week and gain 14 places in the team ranking. For every winner there is a
loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at CANDIES, who went down to 7th from
15th. Life is tough. WHAMMO & THUDDA 4 U! is no joke as it posted a 4-0-1 week
advancing from 12th place to 10th place. Most new teams do poorly at first. RESPECT
THE DEAD, however, has gotten off to a reasonable start at 3-2-0. Nice job! Hey
everybody, watch out for MACIOBELLY, who flew up 28 points in the rankings after
mashing PHOENICIA like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a
basher in the top ten was LOCO, who dropped 15 points after a disappointing (to say
the least) bout with CALLEIGHT. FREY got through to the Duelmaster this turn. No
doubt he was more than anxious to kick SODOM's tail out of the throne! It's a proud
day for the STORMWATCH stable, as their warrior, FREY, ascended the Duelmaster's
throne. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the CHIMLEVTAL arena. And
hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid THE STORMBRINGERS, please raise you hand.
Wow. Does CHIMLEVTAL really have that many liars? And you guys like to boo me?
Well, unsling your rasberries, cause KOSMOS'S MATRIX beats feet every time THE
STORMBRINGERS smiles at them. Try farming, eh? And who is this TOBIAS HAWKWIND you
ask, with 91 points and a 9-7-1 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! Can any one
out there say 'weasel'? Oh well, just saying VALKYRIE will do. She challenged 20
points down to trash GAZA. Definition of petty: VALKYRIE overcame GAZA, a mismatch
of 20 points. PRODIGIOUS of WORDS TO THE WISE had better have a good reason for
challenging down 13 points in a challenge which he won. I thought PRODIGIOUS showed
great skill and promise when he defeated LOVE POTION #9. All right, so I slept
through it! Big deal!
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! PEKKO defied all odds and slew LIGHTBRINGER in the Dark
Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as LIGHTBRINGER's meat is
notoriously tough. For those of you who missed it, Death showed up, grabbed
PHOENICIA by the ear and took her away to a place where she won't need a coat. Well,
just when you thought it was safe to put a new warrior in the arena. No no!
CAPRICIOUS, a mere girl, was slain by ALT this turn. Congrats to ABYSSINIAN for
revenging the death of his teammate (but more importantly, feeding PSYCH MAJOR a bit
of dirt). Well, the dead guy BUTTERS just took SOUTH PARK off his Christmas card
list. The poor guy's bloodfeud just expired with zippo results. Remember:
alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what
happens.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in CHIMLEVTAL have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the
world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Hasta la
bye-bye. (Loud choruses of 'Beat it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster

PERSONAL ADS
Ice -- You keep writing personals and all I see is "whine, whine, whine." -- Master
Darque
P.S. Yeah, Dichabod did want to face me, and I gave him a long list of arenas to
find me in. He refused. Unlike yourself, I can run in an arena without my alliance
mates to protect me.
Bi-Polar Bear -- Save the butt-kissing for your personal meetings with Ice and Bosk.
Spare us in the newsletter. -- Master Darque
Ice -- Yeah, I call up dad every month when I get a newsletter and tell him about the
insatiable fetish you have with him. It is pretty sad that your "Jimbophilia" has
carried on for so long. I'm sure he would be pleased to know that you are still
obsessed with him. Apparently he did his work well for you to still be seething and
mentioning him in personal ads (especially since he doesn't play any longer). I can
only hope to get you as fixated with me. -- Master Darque
P.S. I could bring back Omni and Phantasm if you would like, but you have enough
trouble with my Darque Forces.
Goat -- Diplo on the way, you should have it by the time this runs. -- Master Darque
Chimlevtal -- Just a reminder if you would like to cast ballots for the new inductees
into the Chimlevtal Hall of Fame, please have them to us by 15 January 2004. You can
nominate up to three for Best Manager, Best Team and Best Warrior. -- The Icelord &
High Lord Bosk
I wanted to announce my nominations for the Hall of Fame, so here goes!
Best Manager -- Berylstar (mgr. of Single Malts)
Reason: has compiled a 30-29 record over last 12 turns showing great
commitment to the arena both in regular turns and tourneys, and turning
around what was a 17-37 record!
Best Team -- Stormwatch
Reason: 36-24 record over last 12 turns is the best of those who fought
every fight, and the only two teams that had done better percentage-wise have
already been inducted (Unfit To Be Orcs, and The Stormguards).
Best Warrior -- Two choices here:
1. Sampsa -- 17-0-2 record; enough said.
2. 5-Star Rating -- 20-5 record, plus a 23-9 record in tourneys before AD.
I appreciate the C.O.L. continuing this tradition each year, and encourage you to let
your voices be heard and enter your nominations ASAP! -- Destitute Noble (mgr.
Numbers Game)
P.S. I sent a diplo note also; I trust these votes will be counted even though I did
post them in the personal ads....
The Icelord & High Lord Bosk -- It is not worth going down to his level. -- Polar
Bear & Stormwatch
Lajinn the Genie -- Of course Stormwatch sent a BF to Julius C. (The "c" stands for
clone and clown.) He avoided our BF. This is just a fact. Of course facts never
get in the way of the Crying Cartel. Well done on slaying the clone. -- Stormwatch
Stigma of Stupid -- A TV challenge for me? How sweet. You're not as dim-witted as
your name suggests. -- Palladice
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all. -- Polar Bear
The Icelord and Polar Bear -- Happy holidays to you both. May the COL have a great
new year! -- High Lord Bosk
Chimlevtal -- Let's see if we can get a nice substantial response to The Chimlevtal
Hall of Fame! It is a nice thing to have, no other arenas have one that I'm aware
of! Happy holidays! -- High Lord Bosk
Capricious -- Sorry about stepping on your toes with my Iron Boots. Your beauty
mesmerized me. -- Idi A Clean
Taffy -- That flavor you were using is stuck all over my armor. Good fight. -- Eva
Teflon Don -- Teflon does not stick to steel, it slides. The mead is on me. --
Robes-Pierre
Perforate -- Good fight. You have an invite to the officer's club. You really
impressed me. I will have to train harder. Some things still amaze me. -- Col Ka Da
Fee
All -- I "Poll Pott" have defeated, yes, in a successful bloodfeud "LaJin the Genie."
This is only after he was found trying to flee by the thugs. Our most trustworthy,
honorable, loyal, best friend of a manager, "Goat" sent them to locate him. To be
found dressed as a lady fleeing off to some orc king's harem. This is not very
overlordish. -- Poll Pott
Anders Diemed -- Excellent fight too. You must be under the tutelage of a very smart
manager. My horn is tilted in his honor, yours also. -- Idi A Mean
Skullagrim -- Accepted. Just cancelled both HW I was playing in. I will be pounding
these Council of Fools until they submit and subvert to the way of "Goat." You know
all fields have rocks in them. A sledge in each hand is what I will use. Good luck.
-- Goat
Council -- I came to this arena of my own accord. The Lord of Darkness did not bring
me. I came to fight with C.F.H. hoping to learn more about the game. Since I have
been here all I have heard is your constant crying about the Cartel. Since I am a
member, have 5 warriors. You pick a member of your council, who has 5 warriors (1
stable) (don't get confused). We will fight until I kill every warrior on his or its
stable. Warriors that are killed by another stable can be replaced. Once a warrior
is killed by the stable of your choosing or by me they can't be replaced. Once the
stable is gone, the manager is gone. A challenge by a rookie to managers who cry
like rookies. -- Goat
Goat -- Maybe you haven't noticed, but I'm as busy smashing the C.O.L. as you are! --
Abraxis
Unfit to be Orcs -- Sorry about the death of Lovely Bones; it was your challenge
though! -- Abraxis
Abyssinion -- You had 13 FE on me and still lost. That just shows how weak you and
your manager are! -- Sir Sagtamor, Willborders
Slugbait -- I will not avoid the bloodfeud or sit out my warrior. The if challenged
kill strat was intended for the C.O.L. -- Abraxis
I am in a great holiday spirit. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Bosk and
Polar Bear, an extra salute to you. May 2004 be a great year. -- The Icelord
Brilliant Orange -- "Brilliant" doesn't even begin to describe it. You're blinding.
And not only that, my automatic reaction on seeing you is to swerve to the side,
which makes it hard to hit you. Very cunning. -- Jo Ludan
Cool Hand Luke -- Have you considered gloves? -- Les Nayle
P.S. And how come you're female? That is strange. Very strange, and also
disturbing.
General Electric -- What if I prefer Sylvania? -- Mendal Omshil, contrary by nature
Trashius -- The "whammo" part, okay, I can take it. But you didn't need to "thudda"
me afterward. -- Kambard Murh
Magog -- (frowning) Aren't you supposed to be giant? Or is that your brother Gog?
-- Norgen Pelh
P.S. Are you any relation to Ma Gog of Murska?
Idi A Mean -- Huh? I don't follow your last comment at all. -- Les Nayle
All -- Out of curiosity, does anyone know the record for consecutive dark arena
victories in Chimlevtal? -- Pekko
Igominy -- A pox and a plague upon ya, and may you bore the spectators to death! --
Mani
One Hit Wonder -- But not a one skill learner, I see. -- Inmar
Lagavulin -- You really stuck me good. I barely had it in me to get back to my feet
and fight back. -- Spatha
Icebore -- You would think that in the 5 mo. or so that I've been gone you would have
at least stolen or bought some decent put downs because you damn sure can't come up
with them on your own. -- CFH
P.S. Come get some, tough guy. We await your challenges up or down. You know down
challenges don't phase me one bit.
Goat -- Suck it up and regroup. -- CFH

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
