He had traveled to the Gargoyle Islands which were in the Trier Sea, far to the north-west. He quickly completed his mission with the legendary Crone that dwelt there. With tracking skills, bargaining expertise and right of might, he had concluded Council business. The mercenary had traded a Potion of Longevity and ten Red Dragon scales for a Gem of Seeing and a Stone of Truth Telling. These magical items were Ghean in origin and The Icelord desired them for reasons not yet disclosed. Returning via his giant war-hawk, Raoul, known as "The Harbinger" in many lands, made stops in North Fork, Malcorn and Arvat, checking on Council business in those cities. He now sat in the guildhouse of Stormwatch. The magical items before him on a table and a mug of dwarven ale in his right hand. Also in the room were the Stormwatch Lord Protectors: Lightning, Palladice, Frey, Tigbasa and Napulak. Joining them were Lord Protectors Shalzar of The Stormguards, Odysseus of Overlords, Hamish of The Stormbringers and Skirnir of the Lords of Valhalla. The door opened and Darzon the Pirate strode in. The salty sea-rogue limped forward and had a mischievous grin upon his weather-beaten face. Behind him was the legendary bard, Master Janos. Garbed in a brown cloak, Janos winked and slightly bowed to Raoul. "So, Lord Bosk has been spirited away via a magical gate and the mighty Icelord pursues...." rumbled Raoul. "'Tis true." replied Master Janos. Raoul sat his mug down and drummed his fingers on the table. He then broke into great laughter. Darzon did the same. Many of the Lord Protectors laughed and even Master Janos chuckled. "They bea having the tiger by the tail then!" proclaimed Darzon. "I bea expected the First Sword and the First Mage will bea stacking up those fools like cordwood!" All agreed with that statement. "It is true, no one can stand before those two. Never the less, Master Janos, I will have you monitor the situation. You know what items I speak of to keep in contact with The Icelord and Lord Bosk. If we are needed, we will follow." stated Raoul. "I would bet this attack has to do with the foul goings-on in the city. We will remain alert and respond as necessary." "It shall be done." replied Master Janos. "I will also personally speak with Lord Kinnishan." An hour later the meeting adjourned and Raoul, Darzon and Master Janos walked the streets of Chimlevtal. They decided to go to The Golden Dagger Inn to eat, have a few mugs of ale and discuss Council business. There was much to discuss indeed. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Tale of Two Cities #3 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Chimlevtal: The Icelord faced Lord Kinnishan. "Your adviser says that you know something of the monsters who have taken my sword-brother Bosk." "Besides the fact that he will make them regret having presumed so?" The ruler of Chimlevtal smiled faintly, then sobered. "Yes. Chimlevtal is a twinned city." "Many of the older Alastarian cities are twinned," Shau'nin murmured. "Fratsfa, Valamantis, Monuntial, Zuwayza...." Kinnishan made a dismissing gesture. "True, but they do not concern us at this time. Our concern is that on the other side of a dimensional barrier which is becoming thinner every day is the city of Carestos. And someone in Carestos is dispatching monsters to Chimlevtal to sow disorder--" "That may be one reason, but I am sure it is not so simple as that," Shau'nin said. "Perhaps the ruler of this other city," The Icelord said. Despite his preoccupation with Bosk, the situation intrigued him. The possibilities inherent in the twinning of a city--if it was more than the linking of two cities inherently different--were many and complex. He had never encountered such a situation, but there had been certain legends.... "No." Another thin smile flickered across Kinnishan's face. "I rule Carestos as I do Chimlevtal, and I assure you that I have dispatched no monsters through the barrier." The Icelord frowned. "Can you not divest yourself of one city or the other? The strain of--" "Abandon my responsibility to one city? No." The man's face turned reflective. "And if I did, it would be Chimlevtal I would turn my back on--not that I want to. Chimlevtal is more than five hundred years old, and my family has ruled it from the beginning. Carestos is much older. Legend says that it was an ancestor of mine who laid the first stones together on the point above Carestos Bay, that he was half merchant, half pirate, and he knew a good harbor when he saw one." With a small gesture, Kinnishan shook off memory. "There are people in Carestos, and elsewhere in that world, who would bring me down by cutting at Chimlevtal. They either don't know or don't care that if one city falls, the other must also." The Icelord nodded slowly. "And you can't close the barrier between the cities, because that, too, would have catastrophic consequences in both cities." Shau'nin Snowbeard made a slight movement, as though he could have said something but decided not to. Kinnishan gave a bark of laughter. "See how restrained my counselor is? He has long been urging on me a course of action to end this situation, but it is one I cannot follow with any confidence of success, and so will not follow unless I have no choice." The Icelord looked at the old Adantri, then shook his head and returned to his immediate concern. "Where does Bosk fit into this?" Kinnishan glanced at Shau'nin and raised an eyebrow. "The gate through which the monster came and departed, bearing the High Lord Bosk away with him, bore the mark of Old Night." "As I suspected. So far as I have been able to determine," Kinnishan said, "all the gates which open in and around Chimlevtal at this end open in and around Carestos at the other end. So your friend must have been taken there, even if he might be later moved--or go on his own--somewhere else in that other world." The Icelord nodded. He had already figured that out. And right now, he didn't need more history, he needed useful facts. "By the 'mark of Old Night' you mean the tentacled shadow on the stone?" "Yes. The power that opened that gate and made all possible will have come from one of the gods of Old Night. Though not the darkest powers in that world, they are hostile to the champions of Light. Directly or indirectly, they are the enemies of good order in Carestos, and thus my enemies." "Accepted," The Icelord growled. "But--" "And one who works against them is by definition my ally. As all in Carestos will know: this will affect the reaction of people to your quest for your companion. And if you are going to be burdened with my enemies--all of them--you may as well have the aid of all of my allies." Kinnishan pulled a medallion from around his neck and handed it to the Polarian mage. "This will open doors for you in Carestos. More importantly, it will open the mouths of people with information, and the purses of the wealthy, as well, if you should have need." Finally, something useful, but he had lost time. The Icelord stood. Shau'nin stood also. "You cannot use the same gate through which Lord Bosk was taken," he said. "The delay hasn't helped," The Icelord agreed coldly. "Not because of that. That gate was and has always been opened only by the consent of the gods of Old Night. If you could gain their consent, or simply forced the gate without it, you would be tainted by the spirit of Old Night, which I do not recommend," the old Adantri said. He held up a hand to forestall protest. "Do not think of breaking the rules of that other world before you even know what those rules are. You cannot make use of the artifacts and powers of those dark gods without falling under their shadow. It is a fundamental law of that world. You must use a different gate." "That gate would take me directly to Bosk--" "It might not. It is the nature of such gates that while one end must have a fixed location, the other need not--the other end is under the control of whoever opened it. I don't for one moment suppose that anyone able to command the gate and the creatures who came through it would be so foolish as to leave the other end set on his own sanctum." The Icelord was silent for several minutes, savagely looking for a flaw in the logic. Given that what Shau'nin had said was true of the laws of that other world, there was no flaw. He would have to go to this Carestos and then search. One advantage he did have in that he would not be searching for a stranger. Bosk was his blood brother, and the bond between them would be like a compass. "You must have one or more gates within your control," he said to Kinnishan, "and gates which leave no taint on those who use them. I will go through one of them. Now." Kinnishan nodded. "Show him, Shau'nin." Somewhere near Carestos: Bosk paced the small cell, swearing, but his mind wasn't on his words. He was grappling with his problem: where he was, why, and how to get out. He knew that The Icelord would be looking for him, but it was not in the gnome's character to wait passively to be rescued. He arranged what facts he had and looked at them. He had been taken through an interdimensional gate by a monster under the control of a magician. Okay, fine. It wouldn't be the first time that had happened, and every other time, anyone daring to shanghai him had regretted it in the end. He was apparently supposed to lead some gnomes in a battle against goblins. Normally, that would have been a totally acceptable prospect. He was a gnome himself, and he'd never met a goblin he would hesitate to kill. But was Gorsh really a gnome? Squat, ugly, rude, and unclean.... Bosk was reluctant to concede gnome- hood to the offensive fellow, and yet...did he have a choice? Washed and silent, he would pass in gnomish society. Before Bosk could move on to the next point, he heard footsteps in the corridor leading to his cell. Soft, rather furtive-sounding. He couldn't see anyone, because the corridor was dark save for a torch opposite his cell, and it had a bend in it, but surely anyone coming from Gorsh would carry a light. So either it was someone coming to rescue him--and he didn't know anybody here--or it was someone coming to kill him before he could lead the gnomes against the goblins. A walking bundle of rags emerged into the light. Bosk's mouth tightened. The magician who had commanded the demon that brought him here. "I have a proposition for you, warrior-gnome," the creature whispered. "You already had a proposition for me," Bosk growled. "Work for Gorsh--" "No, that is Gorsh's idea. Mine is different. I needed him to pay for the gate and the demons, but his plan is foolishness." The mage cackled. "A rat had as well plan to overwhelm a pride of lions. Forget Gorsh. *I* brought you here, and I am the one who can send you back...or not. And I have need of a hero." Again the cackle. "That is not something that one finds among the gnomes of this tribe!" Bosk had a pretty good idea where this was going and crossed his arms over his chest. "I suppose there's some treasure to be found, guardians to be fought, that kind of thing." He sighed, making it clear that this was an old story to him, which in truth it was. "Suppose I would rather stay and help Gorsh fight his goblins?" A shifting of the rags suggested that the creature had shrugged. "Then you will die, and I will have to look elsewhere for my hero. This will be tedious, but I have time. And with so many gnomes dying, I will be able to dedicate enough blood to the Old One to pay for another search, another hero." There was a pause. "If you are concerned about the lives of Gorsh's miserable gnomes, then help ME. Few gnomes will die then, because without a leader, their pitiful army will run rather than fight." The thought of working with this creature was repugnant, but he needed as many facts as possible. "And what happens to ME if I take your job?" he asked. "I find the treasure for you, and you let me go, send me back to Chimlevtal?" His voice dripped skepticism. "But of course!" "You'd trust me to find your treasure and bring it to you?" Bosk pressed. "There would be some insurance, of course," the magician whispered. "I am not a fool, nor are you--surely you expect me to protect my interests! A little geas, nothing to trouble an honest man--" Bosk leaped forward with a yell, arms thrusting between the bars of the cell. "No one questions my word!" he roared. "No one compels me!" The mage skipped back, but not fast enough. Bosk's hand closed on cloth that felt like living hide, and an arm as thin and hard as a bone. The mage's other hand, more like a bird's claw than anything gnomish or human, appeared and began to sketch glowing symbols in the air. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 515): BLUE SUEDE of BLUE MOON (Jorja, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Once again I greet you, mighty Chimlevtal! I believe this throne to be the most coveted on Ghea. I am honored to hold it for The Council and salute all those who have held the title before me. OMNE JUS STAT IN ARMIS. Tornado challenged me last turn in a clash of arms that lasted over 4 minutes. The Golden One granted me victory and for that I am grateful. Well met and well fought, Tornado. I am honored to have been granted the title Lord Protector and gladly accept Lady Greywand's gift of immortality. I will take my lands here in the Chimlevtal region and continue to serve The Council of Lords in all projects they endeavor. I am the fifth Parry-Strike The Icelord has graduated. I am also the eighth Overlord to become a Lord Protector. In other important news, Abyssinian of The Stormbringers also graduates this turn! Well met indeed, Lord Protector, to you and your manager, High Lord Bosk! My challenges this turn go out to Terrible Two and Magog. I would have challenged Kirken Tuornin but The Nighthawks seem to have business elsewhere these days. <shrug> What can one expect from a Crying Cartel clone? Keep your blades sharp! Rezos the Thracian of Overlords The Council of Lords SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of CHIMLEVTAL! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team NUMBERS GAME was unseated this week as THE STORMBRINGERS moved up from 7th ranking to take the top spot with a 4-1-0 record for the round. Fortune did not smile upon DARQUE FORCES this time out who this turn suffered a fall into 7th position in the wake of a 1-4-0 round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week UNFIT TO BE ORCS went 3-2-0 to move up 9 in the rankings. My praise to AH NOW KLK HAMMERZ for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round deserving of notice! BARTOFELES caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested DOOM HAMMER and was awarded 22 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, RAPTOR put down IT FELT GOOD, causing him to lose 14 points of recognition in the process. Unwilling to wait upon the will of others, Duelmaster REZOS THE THRACIAN challenged TERRIBLE TWO last week in a match to decide the fate of the throne. The city has turned out in honor of TERRIBLE TWO, for with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest position in the city! Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7! But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city CHIMLEVTAL. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. AH NOW KLK HAMMERZ is feared. This much I can say. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of THE STORMBRINGERS last week. Busy avoiding AH NOW KLK HAMMERZ? Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. AI take warning! You have more than a few enemies in CHIMLEVTAL. I can not but mention with disdain the name of HELM HAMMERHAND who this week posted a challenge to a warrior a full 11 points below in the rankings. I thought HELM HAMMERHAND showed great skill and promise when he overcame AI. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his foe's mortality? Walk proud, warriors of LORDS OF VALHALLA! By striking down MERCURIAL MADMAN you have avenged the honor of your dead. Your virtue is known to all in CHIMLEVTAL. My hearty congratulations VEXAS, for thy revenge upon TICHONDRIOUS, slayer of thy fallen comrade. Next time he will know better, eh? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always! The girls are as pretty in CHIMLEVTAL as ever I remembered them....and the fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. Congratulations to you and to Abyssinian on earning Lord Protector status! -- RTR and Stormwatch Destitute Noble -- You state "I simply don't feel that any scum with ten losses so early in their career is anything special." When Napulak took the title on turn #245 her record was 26-9. Where are those "ten losses so early in her career" at Einstooge? She wasn't a scum and she kicked the snot out of your "7 ST/7SZ" SL FOUR times, stop sniveling and excuse making. You should change your name to "Desperate Housewife" because you sound like one. -- Raoul the Rude P.S. I doubt you would bring up that AB topic on January 20. Napulak -- He talks big now. <cracking knuckles> I will say no more, for now. -- RTR The Icelord and High Lord Bosk -- I hear your tour on Polaris was epic and worthy of praise from The Golden One! Well done on destroying yet more minions of The Dark Alliance. Darzon and I will take care of matters here. The Crying Cartel are lame. Salute! -- RTR Jimblow and Crimson Zit -- Cowards. -- RTR Rezo -- Well done on the throne! -- High Lord Bosk The Icelord -- What an epic tour at your abode! Was a nail-biter! -- High Lord Bosk Destitute Noble Rot -- Your insinuations are not lost on me. You and I should discuss this matter in January! -- High Lord Bosk Lord Protector Abyssinian -- Congratulations to you and High Lord Bosk! -- The Stormguards RTR -- Well met, Harbinger. <chuckle> Though I have no doubt you would indeed transform Manager Dark into "Matt" we can not allow you to do so, at this time. The Council is good friends with Chimlevtal's leadership and we have agreed to follow its laws if at all possible. Let the hens of the Crying Cartel cluck. Well done on the completion of your mission. Many events are now taking place. I depart to pursue those who gated Bosk out of Chimlevtal. I expect you and Darzon will take care of Council business here. Salute! -- The Icelord High Lord Bosk -- It was great AND grand to have you stop by for a little swilling, feasting and Polaris questing, my brother! WELL MET! The Chaucer's Mead & Sam Adams was cold, the great cauldron of home-made chicken noodle soup hot and the blade action unmatched! When the hit-list includes an Ancient Black Dragon AND an Ancient White Dragon, you know warrior's work has been done. Be ready for this summer, mighty one, as we must once again quest for the hammer! Tal. -- The Icelord D. Noble -- I noticed your challenges. (Continue to pat yourself on the back.) I realize you sneak in your challenges knowing the cartel will run interference for you. Here is my challenge to you, brave one: meet me in Arvat. We will both run five warriors a turn, every turn, for the rest of 2005. We can go toe-to-toe with little interference. When any warrior graduates or dies, we print its stats. No hiding behind excuses like "I'm prepping for a tourney" or "I don't have any money." Just two managers going at it in a small arena. My warriors are not "godlings" so buck up and grow some hair on that chin of yours. No excuses or sniveling or conditions, brave one. Just show up. -- The Icelord Endor -- That was fun! -- Bartofeles Sensei Jan -- Well struck with Bijin. Uyr Demonsbane has been returned to Polaris with honors. His stats: 9-11-10-17-7-13-17 AB. He learned 24 skills and had an expert in attack. The Crying Cartel has a history of going inactive and ducking BFs. I expect more from you, of course. No cowardice or hiding, just four turns of The Council vs. the Cartel. See you on the sands. -- The Icelord Edom -- That was fun! -- Ulthar Uruv It Felt Good -- That felt good! -- Damhain the Satyr Legion of Steel -- Welcome to Chimlevtal. -- The Council of Lords Ai -- Ai, ai, ai! That hurt! No wonder I was frantic, I'm very sensitive, there, you know. -- Kambard Murh P.S. That was, in fact, a typical low, dirty, Karnhorn sort of blow. I hope Kjarran eats your soul. Love Potion #9 -- I was going to say something profound, but your scent scrambles my brains. Maybe I'll think of it later. -- Mendal Omshil Salem -- Yeah, I think I SHOULD reconsider this gladiator nonsense. Why am I doing this? Why couldn't I be doing something FUN? Maybe something...darque.... Hmm. Maybe I should look into the possibilities. -- Les Nayle P.S. Teach me something darque. Love Potion #9 -- Ah, it was...(reeling) it was.... -- Mendal Omshil 100 Grand -- Since I won the fight, do I get a purse that size? I could use it. -- Kolum Marod P.S. Try not to bleed on the folding green, it won't go through the bill-changers if you do. Love Potion #9 -- (trying to talk while holding his breath) It's your id#. Very symbolic of something, but I'm not sure (sudden gasp for breath)...what was I saying? -- Mendal Omshil, reeling again Bamboo -- Enough with the sand, dammit! It gets into everything! What did I ever do to you to deserve that? -- Norgen Pelh the sandy and annoyed Kambard Murh -- How can you wonder what is going on, when it should be obvious? You are fighting standbys. Cherish the opportunity to learn from us, for we are the true professionals. -- Ardasar of Carloi, master of kung-fu and spokesgladiator for the Standbys of Chimlevtal To the other gladiators of Chimlevtal -- Know that if you address a personal to us, we will answer. -- the Standbys of Chimlevtal, Ardasar of Carloi, spokesman 20 April 2005 I have returned after a five-year absence. I expect all tithes, gifts and bequeaths to resume as normal. -- Magic Man 4 May 2005 Several questions have been asked about Slaughter's Challenge that I'd like to address and clarify. 1) All Prizes must be used on the contest team, this includes the resurrection. Remember any fast arena team should be able to transfer to a slow arena (except for arena 82, I believe). 2) Warriors will be allowed to fight and run in the dead tourney, should there be one, and return if an opening can be made without breaking the rules (i.e. only one DA fight allowed per team). 3) If you win your single DA match you do not get another. It's one use of the Dark Arena win or lose so if you want him/her/it dead be sure and throw the match! 4) The resurrection potion's longevity has been extended by the commission to 6 months but the other potions (favorites, and +1 bonus) must still be used within 2 turns and on a 5 FE or higher warrior. The resurrection can go on any warrior regardless of FE. Street Legal P.S. My thanks to those already entered (Hammer, The Consortium, Tripwire, Stik, and Shaman) and hope many more find a reason to come to arena 54. Again, my email is triumph1971@hotmail.com or you can diplo me in arena 14 at THE DEATH SQUAD (63) if you need more info!
