It shattered as if it were dry kindling instead of the solid wood it had been. Known as "RTR", "Harbinger" and even as "Haw-Che-Ke-Sug-Ga" by the great plains tribes, the Polarian mercenary was an imposing figure. He stood well over six feet tall and was 285 pounds of solid muscle. His looks were somewhat unusual. This was because his Grandfather had been an Efreeti. The blood of the Dervish race also flowed in his veins. His skin was slightly red in color and he had a malevolent look in his black eyes. His black hair was tied in a ponytail and his short beard was neatly trimmed. A large scar was across his left cheek. He wore red dragon-scale armor, red trousers and white shirt in the style of the corsairs and a red cape. Black boots of fine quality, a necklace of red dragon teeth and a circlet of red upon his head finished his wear. At his side was a magical broadsword that would turn to flame upon command. A most imposing and savage man indeed. Darzon the Pirate packed his clay pipe and then lit it slowly. He was unhappy as well. The seasoned and salty buccaneer commanded the SS GOLDENAXE, currently tied up at Chimelevtal's main pier. "It just bea matter of time, Harbinger." growled Darzon. "Time is not what I wish to give our prey." stated Raoul who stretched and then cracked his knuckles, a sure sign he wished to inflict pain upon someone. An Assassin, aided by two half-orc fighters, had attacked Darzon and Lord Protector Shalzar. If Shalzar had not earned the gift of immortality, he would now be dead. Council forces had hounded the trio, but they had managed to escape into the sewers of Chimlevtal. "I want to draw this rat out. I need a bit of cheese." growled Raoul. "Then let it be me." spoke the legendary Bard, Master Janos, who stepped out of the shadows. "He asked many questions about all three of us. Let us see if he will strike again." "I'll bea with you." grumbled Darzon. "We can't make it look too obvious." "So be it." said Raoul. "This is what we will do...." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Tale of Two Cities #3 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Chimlevtal: The Icelord faced Lord Kinnishan. "Your adviser says that you know something of the monsters who have taken my sword-brother Bosk." "Besides the fact that he will make them regret having presumed so?" The ruler of Chimlevtal smiled faintly, then sobered. "Yes. Chimlevtal is a twinned city." "Many of the older Alastarian cities are twinned," Shau'nin murmured. "Fratsfa, Valamantis, Monuntial, Zuwayza...." Kinnishan made a dismissing gesture. "True, but they do not concern us at this time. Our concern is that on the other side of a dimensional barrier which is becoming thinner every day is the city of Carestos. And someone in Carestos is dispatching monsters to Chimlevtal to sow disorder--" "That may be one reason, but I am sure it is not so simple as that," Shau'nin said. "Perhaps the ruler of this other city," The Icelord said. Despite his preoccupation with Bosk, the situation intrigued him. The possibilities inherent in the twinning of a city--if it was more than the linking of two cities inherently different--were many and complex. He had never encountered such a situation, but there had been certain legends.... "No." Another thin smile flickered across Kinnishan's face. "I rule Carestos as I do Chimlevtal, and I assure you that I have dispatched no monsters through the barrier." The Icelord frowned. "Can you not divest yourself of one city or the other? The strain of--" "Abandon my responsibility to one city? No." The man's face turned reflective. "And if I did, it would be Chimlevtal I would turn my back on--not that I want to. Chimlevtal is more than five hundred years old, and my family has ruled it from the beginning. Carestos is much older. Legend says that it was an ancestor of mine who laid the first stones together on the point above Carestos Bay, that he was half merchant, half pirate, and he knew a good harbor when he saw one." With a small gesture, Kinnishan shook off memory. "There are people in Carestos, and elsewhere in that world, who would bring me down by cutting at Chimlevtal. They either don't know or don't care that if one city falls, the other must also." The Icelord nodded slowly. "And you can't close the barrier between the cities, because that, too, would have catastrophic consequences in both cities." Shau'nin Snowbeard made a slight movement, as though he could have said something but decided not to. Kinnishan gave a bark of laughter. "See how restrained my counselor is? He has long been urging on me a course of action to end this situation, but it is one I cannot follow with any confidence of success, and so will not follow unless I have no choice." The Icelord looked at the old Adantri, then shook his head and returned to his immediate concern. "Where does Bosk fit into this?" Kinnishan glanced at Shau'nin and raised an eyebrow. "The gate through which the monster came and departed, bearing the High Lord Bosk away with him, bore the mark of Old Night." "As I suspected. So far as I have been able to determine," Kinnishan said, "all the gates which open in and around Chimlevtal at this end open in and around Carestos at the other end. So your friend must have been taken there, even if he might be later moved--or go on his own--somewhere else in that other world." The Icelord nodded. He had already figured that out. And right now, he didn't need more history, he needed useful facts. "By the 'mark of Old Night' you mean the tentacled shadow on the stone?" "Yes. The power that opened that gate and made all possible will have come from one of the gods of Old Night. Though not the darkest powers in that world, they are hostile to the champions of Light. Directly or indirectly, they are the enemies of good order in Carestos, and thus my enemies." "Accepted," The Icelord growled. "But--" "And one who works against them is by definition my ally. As all in Carestos will know: this will affect the reaction of people to your quest for your companion. And if you are going to be burdened with my enemies--all of them--you may as well have the aid of all of my allies." Kinnishan pulled a medallion from around his neck and handed it to the Polarian mage. "This will open doors for you in Carestos. More importantly, it will open the mouths of people with information, and the purses of the wealthy, as well, if you should have need." Finally, something useful, but he had lost time. The Icelord stood. Shau'nin stood also. "You cannot use the same gate through which Lord Bosk was taken," he said. "The delay hasn't helped," The Icelord agreed coldly. "Not because of that. That gate was and has always been opened only by the consent of the gods of Old Night. If you could gain their consent, or simply forced the gate without it, you would be tainted by the spirit of Old Night, which I do not recommend," the old Adantri said. He held up a hand to forestall protest. "Do not think of breaking the rules of that other world before you even know what those rules are. You cannot make use of the artifacts and powers of those dark gods without falling under their shadow. It is a fundamental law of that world. You must use a different gate." "That gate would take me directly to Bosk--" "It might not. It is the nature of such gates that while one end must have a fixed location, the other need not--the other end is under the control of whoever opened it. I don't for one moment suppose that anyone able to command the gate and the creatures who came through it would be so foolish as to leave the other end set on his own sanctum." The Icelord was silent for several minutes, savagely looking for a flaw in the logic. Given that what Shau'nin had said was true of the laws of that other world, there was no flaw. He would have to go to this Carestos and then search. One advantage he did have in that he would not be searching for a stranger. Bosk was his blood brother, and the bond between them would be like a compass. "You must have one or more gates within your control," he said to Kinnishan, "and gates which leave no taint on those who use them. I will go through one of them. Now." Kinnishan nodded. "Show him, Shau'nin." Somewhere near Carestos: Bosk paced the small cell, swearing, but his mind wasn't on his words. He was grappling with his problem: where he was, why, and how to get out. He knew that The Icelord would be looking for him, but it was not in the gnome's character to wait passively to be rescued. He arranged what facts he had and looked at them. He had been taken through an interdimensional gate by a monster under the control of a magician. Okay, fine. It wouldn't be the first time that had happened, and every other time, anyone daring to shanghai him had regretted it in the end. He was apparently supposed to lead some gnomes in a battle against goblins. Normally, that would have been a totally acceptable prospect. He was a gnome himself, and he'd never met a goblin he would hesitate to kill. But was Gorsh really a gnome? Squat, ugly, rude, and unclean.... Bosk was reluctant to concede gnome- hood to the offensive fellow, and yet...did he have a choice? Washed and silent, he would pass in gnomish society. Before Bosk could move on to the next point, he heard footsteps in the corridor leading to his cell. Soft, rather furtive-sounding. He couldn't see anyone, because the corridor was dark save for a torch opposite his cell, and it had a bend in it, but surely anyone coming from Gorsh would carry a light. So either it was someone coming to rescue him--and he didn't know anybody here--or it was someone coming to kill him before he could lead the gnomes against the goblins. A walking bundle of rags emerged into the light. Bosk's mouth tightened. The magician who had commanded the demon that brought him here. "I have a proposition for you, warrior-gnome," the creature whispered. "You already had a proposition for me," Bosk growled. "Work for Gorsh--" "No, that is Gorsh's idea. Mine is different. I needed him to pay for the gate and the demons, but his plan is foolishness." The mage cackled. "A rat had as well plan to overwhelm a pride of lions. Forget Gorsh. *I* brought you here, and I am the one who can send you back...or not. And I have need of a hero." Again the cackle. "That is not something that one finds among the gnomes of this tribe!" Bosk had a pretty good idea where this was going and crossed his arms over his chest. "I suppose there's some treasure to be found, guardians to be fought, that kind of thing." He sighed, making it clear that this was an old story to him, which in truth it was. "Suppose I would rather stay and help Gorsh fight his goblins?" A shifting of the rags suggested that the creature had shrugged. "Then you will die, and I will have to look elsewhere for my hero. This will be tedious, but I have time. And with so many gnomes dying, I will be able to dedicate enough blood to the Old One to pay for another search, another hero." There was a pause. "If you are concerned about the lives of Gorsh's miserable gnomes, then help ME. Few gnomes will die then, because without a leader, their pitiful army will run rather than fight." The thought of working with this creature was repugnant, but he needed as many facts as possible. "And what happens to ME if I take your job?" he asked. "I find the treasure for you, and you let me go, send me back to Chimlevtal?" His voice dripped skepticism. "But of course!" "You'd trust me to find your treasure and bring it to you?" Bosk pressed. "There would be some insurance, of course," the magician whispered. "I am not a fool, nor are you--surely you expect me to protect my interests! A little geas, nothing to trouble an honest man--" Bosk leaped forward with a yell, arms thrusting between the bars of the cell. "No one questions my word!" he roared. "No one compels me!" The mage skipped back, but not fast enough. Bosk's hand closed on cloth that felt like living hide, and an arm as thin and hard as a bone. The mage's other hand, more like a bird's claw than anything gnomish or human, appeared and began to sketch glowing symbols in the air. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Tale of Two Cities #4 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Chimlevtal and Carestos: Shau'nin Snowbeard led the way deeper into the mass of the citadel. The passages might have been part of a maze, twisting and branching, passing through doors both obvious and concealed. The Icelord sensed the presence of magic at several points, no doubt there were wards that were only suppressed by the presence of the counselor. He could have gotten through them unaided, but it was as well that he didn't have to. He had a feeling that he would need all his strength of will and body and magic soon enough. The Gate, when they came to it, was an ordinary-looking door in the side wall of a hall, and The Icelord wondered how many other doors they had passed had been Gates. There was enough background magic here to have concealed the presence of an inactive Gate, even from him. The old Adantri touched several points on the door and its frame. No doubt the sequence was significant, and The Icelord memorized it automatically. It was unlikely that he would need to open this Gate from this side himself, but you never knew when such knowledge might be vital. On the other side was another hallway much like the one they stood in here. "This is under the citadel in Carestos," Shau'nin said. "To the right you approach the occupied parts of the citadel, but there are warded doorways that must be passed. To the left the passage emerges on a back street between small shops. There is a ward there, too, of course--we can't have just anyone wandering into this hall! But the medallion Lord Kinnishan gave you will get you past that and into the street. The shop to the right of the exit is a pawnshop, the owner, Pagadar, is a man who can be trusted. He will not take action, but he can provide information on many subjects. To the left is Drusha's Cafe; you will find men of action there. Not all of them are reliable, but Drusha can steer you to the good ones, if she cares to. She is... notional." The old man stepped through the doorway, waving The Icelord forward. "Beyond this point, you must rely on your own judgment and ability more than anything. May the Dragon guard your path." He bowed and returned to the Chimlevtal side of the Gate, which closed behind him. Somewhere near Carestos: The body in Bosk's grip stiffened suddenly, then collapsed into rags and air. His fist tightened on the tattered cloth automatically while he assessed the changes situation. Someone had come up behind the magician and stabbed the creature in the back. This magician was not someone Bosk would mourn, and he was sure he could find some other way home, but the assassin was bound to feel that he--no, it was a she-- was owed a favor. He examined his rescuer critically. A sturdy-built woman, short, swarthy and dark-haired, with broad features. Her brown-black hair grew down the sides of her face to her jawline like sideburns--braided sideburns--but she had no beard or sign of one. She was dressed in plain, dark leather and wore two visible daggers besides the one in the magician's back. She might be a gnome, but there was something a little off; he couldn't decide what it was, exactly. She was returning his scrutiny just as critically. "They tell me you're a gnome." Her voice was deep for a woman, and skeptical. "I am a gnome." He didn't like the doubt in her yellow eyes. "What are you?" "A goblin, of course. And if you were an ordinary gnome, I'd've let that one--" a gesture at the residue of the magician, "feed you to his demons." She scowled. "But the word is that Gorsh plans to use you to rally his rabble against us. That could prolong the war and postpone the inevitable defeat of the Gorshalk until many had died. On both sides, mind you! So we decided to get you out of Gorsh's hands." Bosk noted that the woman hadn't come within reach yet and was making no move to unlock the door of his cell--if she could. And he still needed information, if he was going to act sensibly. "Can you or your people send me home?" "I cannot," she admitted, "nor any goblin I'd deal with. The blood-price for opening a Gate the fast way is too high, and there's no time right now for the slow methods." "So how are you going to 'get me out of Gorsh's hands'?" he asked. "Kill me?" "If I must, but we would prefer to simply get you out of this warren and have you go somewhere else on your own." "What, you don't want me to lead YOUR side of the war, or perform some other little errand?" Her lip curled. "What true goblin would follow a gnome?" Her scowl deepened. "Though you are unlike any gnome I've ever seen. Cleaner, for one thing. And blond... I've never seen a blond gnome, or heard of one. Still... we just want you out of the whole matter." "How do you propose to KEEP me out of it, once I'm free?" "You will give us your word, sworn by your gods and ours." "I'll have to think about it," Bosk said. It was true that he didn't want to get involved in some war he knew nothing about, and he did want out of this dungeon. But to accept the help of a goblin, and to swear not to aid gnomes.... And he was sure that The Icelord was coming and would get him out if he didn't go along with this goblin woman, although he hated the thought of waiting-- "Think fast," she advised. "Gorsh will be coming for his answer soon." DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. The fine free press of this city did not print my DM column last turn, so I will say it again: "Vini Vidi Vici." Your Humble Duelmaster, Greyscales Council of Lords SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, CHIMLEVTAL? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, LORDS OF VALHALLA, since AVENGERS took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. UNFIT TO BE ORCS turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 13th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-1-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, THE STORMBRINGERS, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see MERCURIAL MADMAN win a fight and gain 19 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, ULTHAR THUUNE beat SUM-R SQUASH and SUM-R SQUASH lost 15 points. You're breakin' my heart. GREYSCALES challenged SALEM for CHIMLEVTAL's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And if variety is the spice of life, CHIMLEVTAL may be getting bland, as GREYSCALES stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, CHIMLEVTAL? He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. NUMBERS GAME, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like STORMWATCH avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, EDOM was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's see if anyone's dead or dying. A big yahoo goes out to TORNADO this turn, for revenging AVENGERS' bloodfeud against DARQUE FORCES' warrior ENDOR. Heh, heh, heh. It's about time RAPTOR got beat for picking on warriors like JARL FORKBEARD. Bravo, THE STORMGUARDS. See you at The Mourngrym Inn and Tavern. Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see STEPHEN and THE STORMBRINGERS at The Mourngrym Inn and Tavern tonight celebrating their bloodfeud victory over A-SPEAR-O-GUTS. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of CHIMLEVTAL. I feel much better now. As usual, Chimlevtal is where the action is! Good luck to all! -- Pulverizer, mgr. of Veggie Pack High Lord Bosk -- Sorry about Ulthar Barsoom! A-Spear-O-Guts is a barbarian. I have nothing but respect for you and the entire COL. Good fortunes to you! -- Pulverizer The Icelord -- Hello. Good to see you're keeping the history of the arena alive. I don't know who this "casual observer" is, but if he can't even sign his name, he must be a nobody. Good fortunes! -- Pulverizer Bartofeles -- Who is this "casual observer?" Someone who can't sign their ads? A nobody? I thought so. Your personal to Terrible Two was hysterical! -- Pulverizer COL -- Do not worry, the Vendetta Cartel and my teams have no alliance. Call it a mutual satisfaction in watching your winning percentage go south. -- D. Noble Bartofeles -- That's twice you've escaped the grave--let's see if the third time is the charm. Your alliance mates are lucky that I got my invite to the Isle--or it would have been a steady diet of "Terrible Two" for your crew--and rest assured, I'm way past my "expert" rating in skill areas--unlike you. Hopefully, you'll meet the same fate as Freki I and II did--if my prayers are answered it will be from the blade of one of the VC (if not from me next turn). I'll be in 100 if you ever want to battle, and I'm sure you don't. -- Terrible Two P.S. Tell Icelord that Freki III is on the short list of warriors to slay P.P.S. Not only did I make it back from the tourney--I made it back as a tournament victor, something you could NEVER be. Then I whupped you again--soon to be a third time. Icelord -- You and Bosk have been running two teams in here forever. Now that I exercise the same right you did to bring other teams here--you belittle my move to even things up by saying "I'll outspend rather than outgame you"! I guess I got lucky and outgamed your group as I went 5-0-1 against the COL last turn here? Get used to being "luckily outgamed". -- D. Noble RTR -- Wow--I'm glad your bosses kept the leash on you. How about this idea--give in to the dark side, don't deny your urges and challenge me! Better yet--I'll challenge you! -- D. Noble P.S. I'm not sure what cowardly actions you speak of. I get called out--I show up. People think they can impose their will and bully me with words and deeds, I talk and fight back. The only thing I did in Arvat was write a spotlight (albeit in poor judgement). I've lived up to that mistake and learned from it (I even asked Doc Steele if I could write about he and his warrior before I actually did it). Now let's see if the COL can learn from theirs. Congrats to the four TVs from Chimlevtal--and our almost TV from Military Mayhem! -- D. Noble Greyscales -- Congrats on retaining the title! You've denied it to the Criers and have been our champion twice as long as Tremblin Two. Well done. (Too bad they didn't print your DM column last turn.) -- The Stormguards RTR -- Of course Sensei Jan sat out Bijinn four straight turns to avoid our BF. Destitute N likes to do it too. Guess they can't cry if/when we try that "strategy." -- The Stormguards Destitute N. -- Actually what is pathetic is your attempt to turn this issue into how "noble" you are and how "bad" I am. You are the Cheshire cat. You hide from BFs. You flame people and then get your buddies to nod their heads in agreement that you are the aggrieved party. You invite all managers to come to Arvat and then cry when Bosk shows up. Pathetic. Keep passing that kool-aid to your friends. We know the real story. -- The Icelord Destitute N. -- Are you sure you didn't have someone read those fights to you? -- The Icelord (Napulak owned you. Get over it and get on with life. You should not speak of honor as you have none.) "Casual Observer" -- How pathetic you are. Can't sign your name or are you just Destitute N blowing smoke? -- The Icelord "Casual Observer" -- Or is that Desperate Noble? Since you can't sign your name we all know your words, like you, mean nothing. <lol> -- Bartofeles Bobby Bigfoot -- Ouch! That hurts. Faolan AP Gryffydd was 11(1)-13-11-17-11-11-11 PS. He has been returned to Polaris with honors. His Uncle, The Stormguard Lord Protector Ciaran Ap Gruffydd, served as Honor Guard. There are some young warriors in the clan who are now asking to join The Stormguards. Expect a BF. -- The Icelord The Canucks -- Ouch! Not cool. Ulthar Zaar has been returned to Polaris with honors. Expect a BF. -- The Stormguards The Icelord and High Lord Bosk -- Pay no attention to this sissy, Destitute Noble. He can dish it out but can't take it. I expect 3-4 of his buddies to show up to protect him any turn now. -- RTR Destitute Noble -- What was that? You said "I am tiring of it." <flexing right biceps and giving you a wink> Come on over here and try to do something about it, little golden boy. -- RTR VC -- How interesting a development is this? Destitute N rolls into town and his 15 warriors are running interference for you and sharing info. You guys have got to be loving this! -- RTR (bring on the thunder) Greyscales -- Well done to you and High Lord Bosk! -- RTR "Casual Observer" -- Can't sign your personal ads? What a pud. You're either a coward, Destitute Noble or both. -- RTR The Stormguards -- I am breaking my ban on personal ads in order to send you my condolences on the death of Faolan Ap Gryffyd. When I ordered Falcata to challenge him, I was looking for skills and a small chance to win, not a kill. As a courtesy to your guild, I am informing you that I plan to keep Falcata active for the next four cycles. Strength and courage in this life, echo into the afterlife.
