Chimlevtal:
The two gladiators walked the waterfront of the city, always staying within
arm's reach of each other in the fog. Farther apart, they could too easily lose
track of each other in this fog, and while neither was truly afraid of the monster
they might meet, prudence recommended that they stay together. It was better to hunt
in pairs.
"But I wish," the Prince of Ar said, "that we were hunting for Lord Bosk."
"The Icelord will find him, and the demon who carried him off, too," Tempus
answered.
"Yes, of course, but we'll miss the fight--"
A scream echoed in the fog. There was more animal rage than human fear in it,
and the two gladiators turned back to back automatically, straining to see through
the gray air. They had heard this hunting scream before, but never so close.
Before, they had only been in time to pick up the bodies, and the pieces of bodies,
where the hunter had struck. This time, though... this time they might actually
catch the predator.
"I wonder who it's hunting?" Ar asked. "Who'd be out in this fog, and with a
monster leaving bodies all over the waterfront?"
"WE are," Tempus answered. "It might be hunting us."
"Good! Let it bring the fight to us," Ar said. He had his sword in hand, and
his eyes moved constantly, probing the fog for any sign of movement. This was the
heaviest fog he'd seen all year; he couldn't even be sure where along the waterfront
they were.
"This fog," Tempus said after a moment, "smells the way it did when Lord Bosk
was taken."
"Good! We'll get our own chance at the monster, then!"
"If it tries to take us away somewhere, let us grip hands and both go with it.
We may be able to help our managers that way."
"And we'll get a good fight, too," Ar said.
Carestos, twin city to Chimlevtal:
The Icelord has chosen not to contact the informants named by Shau'nin, at
least, not at first. First he would walk the city by himself and see it without the
filters that other minds would interpose. They might not mean to color their
information, but no one could help doing so. And he needed to be unbiased, as far as
he could. He needed to make no assumptions in advance of the facts.
As he strolled down the flagstoned walk that bordered the street, he reviewed
his needs. First, he had to find Bosk. His sword-brother had been carried away by a
monster, a creature he would call a demon, though Shau'nin had implied that this
description was inexact in the context. An interdimensional gate had been used.
Therefore the person directly responsible was probably a magician of some kind.
Magicians who practiced their craft could be detected in the act.
He opened his awareness to the magical flux of this world. It was like opening
a window on a storm. After the decaying magical field of Ghea, this was amazingly
rich. He let it flow past him for a few minutes while he adjusted to the underlying
pattern. And there was a pattern, different than he had become accustomed to in
Chimlevtal. More structured. The spells that swirled through the city, he realized
after study, were generally of low power and mostly negative, preventive and
protective spells, but they were from more sources than he could count. A lot of
amulets and talismans, but also a surprising number of people using magic themselves
at a petty level. Cooks with a fire to start. Preening dandies putting a final
polish on their clothing. Shopkeepers with a magical alarm on the cashbox.
Such a free use of magic surprised him, as it could be destabilizing for the
world as a whole. He probed more deeply. Ah. Though there was, on the surface, a
broad use of spells, they were of such low level that he wouldn't call them more than
cantrips, if that, and their general effect was to cancel each other out. They
simply made a veil of magical static. If there were strong spells at work here, they
were hidden behind that veil. The spells that opened gates, that summoned and
controlled monsters, would be powerful indeed, and none of the ordinary people and
minor hedge-witches around him would be able to cast them.
He stopped, his attention returning to the physical scene. He had reached the
waterfront of Carestos, at about the same distance from the citadel as in Chimlevtal.
The time of day was the same, too, though it was clear here as it had not been in
Alastari.
Which made the patch of mist that formed out of nothing conspicuous. As
noticeable as the blast of magic in action that accompanied the opening of a gate and
the arrival of two gladiators from Chimlevtal.

Greetings, Fellow Warriors of Glorious Chimlevtal! It has been a nice ride here at
the top of this fine arena. In the tradition of the Council of Lords, I raise my
goblet to our fearless leaders--High Lord Bosk and The Icelord. It is due to your
unrelenting training that we lowly warriors are able to rise to the top. Est sularis

SPY REPORT
I can't believe the violence in CHIMLEVTAL! I still haven't told Mom I'm
writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Too bad, AVENGERS, but
LORDS OF VALHALLA was just too good to be stopped. ALL NIGHT LONG had like a really
albendranius week! Those hunks got a 3-2-1 and wound up as 13th team! One team
deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 6 after going 4-1-0. Keep it up, THE
STORMGUARDS! I talked to CHAMPIONS OF RUNE's manager before the fights. He said,
"We're gonna do good." And look at this: 3-2-0! Psychic, or what! I just can't
say enough good things about EXTREME CREEPS. They went 3-2-0 their first time, don't
slouch, and they've got good oral hygiene! MVP award for MANI? SOL INVICTUS' proud
of him after beating TORNADO and getting 41 points. Talk about yer big time losers!
VEXAS got smashed by ULTHAR AESIR, and lost 14 points! The Duelmaster isn't going to
stop just cause he's Number One! IT FELT GOOD knows this. He was challenged by the
Duelmaster. And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh
well, welcome IT FELT GOOD. Aren't WHY DID I DO IT proud. (Oh, my.) I hear the top
team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters
for PR photos.
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? The warriors of NUMBERS GAME must
be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that
I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why THE STORMBRINGERS' been avoiding NUMBERS
GAME so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Like, is 19TH HOLE popular, or
what? It was challenged the most in all of CHIMLEVTAL! It's got a 0-2-0, is that
good? See if I ever talk to HELM HAMMERHAND again! AI was so low when He challenged
he. Hhmph! Is this how LORDS OF VALHALLA advances, by having their members (HELM
HAMMERHAND) fight people that are really below them (AI)? VALKYRIE must not be a
good enough fighter to get in fair fights. She challenged SHE MADE ME. 8 is a big
difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought VALKYRIE showed great skill
and promise when she defeated SHE MADE ME. All right, so I slept through it! Big
deal!
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Pinch me, I must be dreaming!!! DOOM
HAMMER returns from the Dark Arena, maybe a "little upset" at his THE STORM REAVERS
teammates... It was kind of sad, seeing old TORNADO stumbling around the arena,
before MANI finished him off. Oh well! It was totally gross when MANI killed
TORNADO. Blood and itty bitty body bits all over the place! Things weren't too
happy at AVENGERS, either. BARTOFELES bloodfeuded (is that a word?) FALCATA for
revenge over some guy's bad fortune. Was it really worth it? Like was that some
Bloodfeud, or what? (SVEIN FORKBEARD vs. TEN-TON TESSIE, that is.) What if they had
a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it

Terrible Two's resume: 13-3 overall in arena play and one of the losses was avenged
the very next turn, duelmaster at the ripe old age of 11-2, and taking the throne by
beating the departing Rezos the Thracian on his last turn, a much publicized warrior
to be sure. One TV, 8-3 in the champs tourney, but he did fight in every tourney
starting with rookies, all the way through champions including two stints in the
adepts. What other graduated warrior this year has as much dedication to his/her
craft and our fine city? Also, consider that he may have one more run in him for the
freshmen/AD class to bring Chimlevtal the ultimate glory! -- D. Noble

HAMMER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Be it known from the highest mountains to the darkest alleys of Alastari that
the veteran manager known far and wide as Hammer has now officially retired from
sponsoring contests as of September 15, 2005.
What a long time ago was a fun motivated activity to help promote our common
DM/D2 gaming interest in an effort to promote the growth and competitiveness of
selected arenas has become a far from fun experience.
In other words Hammer has had it!
The combination of real life situations interfering with the time needed to
effectively sponsor a contest, plus the attitudes expressed during such sponsorship
interference has led to Hammer closing his personal coin coffers and retiring from
his planned sponsorship of any future contests.
There are others in our close knit gaming community who are well able to step up
to the plate and continue sponsoring contests that make the basic game a fun
experience for all those who choose to compete and interact in such future endeavors.
Hammer thanks all managers both active and inactive who helped to make the
Hammer sponsored contests a historical and entertaining experience well worth the
time, effort and money spent over the past several years.
May the Cheers and the Jeers of future contests build upon the legacies of those
who have paved the way in years gone by to help make this game what it is today.
Hammer has no regrets for the part he has played in that history.
