The Urt Delta north of Chimlevtal:
The Obsidian Golem studied the tower as it waded across the pool. The water was
shallow, the bottom firm, so it didn't need to focus much attention on the mechanics
of approach. And it suspected that the tower was only incidental to its basic
purpose. At the least, the Cult Member it had followed this far had gone on past
with only a slight hesitation. The Golem could perceive, by a sense which it knew
had no precise human analog, that the tower contained a quiescent Gate. This could
be a thing of interest to its creator, and it observed closely. But the Gate here
was not its task, and it moved on past in the wake of the Cult Member.
Truly, humans were a mystery. It knew with certainty that it could defeat and
kill the Cultist, or defeat and capture him, returning him to Arvat for questioning.
Why follow? It seemed inefficient.
No doubt there was more to this than had been revealed. Which was so often the
case. Did people fear that a golem would be incapable of understanding or that it
would babble whatever it had been told? After a moment, the Obsidian Golem shook its
smooth dark head. Or did they fear that it WOULD understand, and disagree?
Possibly near Carestos:
Lord Bosk stared for a few seconds, mouth open with a combination of shock and
outrage, then lunged after the goblin woman and grabbed her shoulder. "Oh, no, you
don't get off that easy! You got me INTO these tunnels, wench, and you can damned
well get me out of them!"
She turned to face him, shaking off his hand, and her scowl was as formidable as
his own. "Why? Can't you follow a simple direction? That tunnel will take you to
the surface. And since you don't want to associate with me, and I don't want to
associate with you...." She shrugged. "Splitting up makes sense to me."
Bosk glared at her, words jostling in his mouth. Finally he said, "We'd better
stick together."
"I'm not going to the surface," she snapped. "I've got other rabbits to catch!"
"Yeah? Well, I've got some questions I want answered before I walk away from
this whole mess," the gnome answered. "And who else is there down here who might
have an answer?"
After a moment, she said, "I won't promise you answers, but ask."
"Okay." He sorted through what information he had. "Okay, here's the first
one. Even that witch-doctor back there said the gnomes can't win this on their own.
Why'd you start this war, then?"
"We didn't. Gorsh attacked one of our mining outposts." Her angry scowl faded
to a simple frown. "We didn't understand it then, and we don't now. They killed a
lot of our miners and destroyed a lot of equipment, but they didn't send a force big
enough to capture the place and hold it, and they must have known that. But we
couldn't ignore what they'd done, either, and they knew THAT, too. A lot of people
said it was just typical of gnomish stupidity." She made a bothered gesture, as
though waving away a fly. "That's just bias."
"You're saying GNOMES were the ones who started this war they can't win?" Bosk
put his hands on his hips to reinforce his glare. "THAT is bias--"
"No, I've seen the reports. I think...." She paused, then shrugged. "I think,
and our queen thinks, that they've been maneuvered into this. That they're pawns,
and, probably, that we are, too."
Bosk narrowed his eyes and considered that. "Somebody wants you distracted, not
able to get involved in some other matter? Well... maybe. I don't know your local
politics. What kind of thing would you be doing if you weren't about to go to war
with the gnomes?"
She shrugged again. "We don't KNOW. When I left the palace, whatever else
hadn't happened yet. And even when we know that the gnomish attacks are a
distraction, we can't ignore them."
Bosk nodded. "Okay. I might know some things that will help make sense of
this. Or maybe have some ideas. Take me to your leader."
Carestos:
The Icelord raised an eyebrow. "Your presence is not unwelcome," he said to the
two gladiators. "But it is a surprise. How did it happen? I see no monster to
snatch you through a Gate."
Lord Protector Tempus shrugged, tight-lipped. "There were monsters around," he
said. "Chimlevtal was practically under siege."
"The people are taking our arrival calmly, aren't they?" the Prince of Ar noted.
The Icelord glanced around. People had moved away from them and were keeping an
open space around the three foreigners, maybe ten or fifteen feet across. But beyond
that perimeter, they went on about their business. No one stared, and as far as The
Icelord could tell, no one set up any spells against them, either defensive or
offensive. "Intriguing," he murmured. "I wonder why...?"
"They aren't aware of you at all," a female voice said.
The three men turned. An elf, or part-elf, The Icelord decided. Wealthy, if
you could judge by her clothing: a lot of silk, of gold jewelry, of what he
suspected was extremely artful tailoring.
"A simple illusion," she said, gesturing. "A specialty of mine. It wouldn't do
for just anyone to realize you are here, or just what, exactly, you are."
"Did Shau'nin set you to keep track of me?" The Icelord demanded.
Her perfectly shaped eyebrows rose. "So the old man knows that something is
going on, does he? Well, I'm not surprised. Very little slips past him. But," she
smiled with satisfaction, "*I* have slipped past his notice. No, Shau'nin Snowbeard
did not send me here or set me this task." She sighed. "Although we'll probably
turn out to be allies. It's a case of 'an enemy of my enemy is my friend'."

I doubt CHIMLEVTAL will ever be the same. I want to know who's buying the drinks for
who tonight at The Mourngrym Inn and Tavern, seeing as DARQUE FORCES' 175-160-10 has
earned them 9th place in the ranks. The AVENGERS guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and
deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can
lead. And let's see, ENDOR fought ZARENDARGAR and gained 23 points and contributed
to DARQUE FORCES' 4-1-0. BARTOFELES has lost to MANI, falling 18 points, while
helping make THE STORMGUARDS a 3-2-0 turn. We should ask RAUNI about the thrill of
victory, and what being the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, she's now the one to
ask. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing
fighters do dishes at The Mourngrym Inn and Tavern until they win. Maybe?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. NUMBERS GAME has cause to stand tall, as they were
CHIMLEVTAL's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And
guess who avoided NUMBERS GAME stable the most? Believe it or not, it was THE
STORMBRINGERS. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was JUST
DESSERTS' warrior FANTASTIC FLAN. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster! Tsk, tsk, tsk. EDOM, does your manager know you're challenging down 16
points to fight ULTHAR JARVA from OVERLORDS? I thought challenges were for warriors,
not cowards looking for easy wins. EDOM beat ULTHAR JARVA, is nothing sacred? In a
brave attempt, MYTHIC MACAROON from JUST DESSERTS challenged up 24 points to fight
GERI from the LORDS OF VALHALLA stable. MYTHIC MACAROON perhaps got his just
desserts, seeing as he was bested by GERI and ended up with 7 recognition points.
ULTHAR XZORSH of THE STORMGUARDS had better have a good reason for challenging down
13 points in a challenge which he won. I thought ULTHAR XZORSH showed great skill
and promise when he beat SADISTIC SMORE. All right, so I slept through it! Big
deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Kudos go out to SYNYSTR this turn, for revenging CHAMPIONS OF RUNE's
bloodfeud against ALL NIGHT LONG's warrior VIP SECTION. Well done. Is it really
true that CHIMLEVTAL has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd
ask...
