Much of his size and power came from his Grandfather, Raoul the Ruthless. His Grandfather was an Efreeti and a member of The High Council in the City of Brass. One did not rise to power on The Elemental Plane of Fire by being weak. Now on Ghea, Raoul the Rude had learned much from his Grandfather. He was many things but weak was not one of them. The Steam Mephit had unleashed a great stream of scalding water. When it made contact with RTR's flaming sword a great crackling and hissing sound filled the air. The cloud of steam that enveloped the mercenary thickened. The evil creature darted forward, ready to kill, as ordered by its Master, Tantoo the Assassin. Tantoo stepped back as the steam cloud doubled in size and density. He looked around quickly. His horse lay dead, the still red-hot spear in its chest. The smell of burnt horse flesh filled his nose. The Steam Mephit he had summoned was now fighting his hated enemy. He thought of running and trying to make it to Arvat. Quickly he decided against that action. It was doubtful the Mephit could kill Raoul. It could distract him though. He needed to finish this now. With his Barikalan blade in hand he darted into the steam cloud. He had to go for the quick strike. The scalding water hit his sword with full force. The flames wavered in defiance, then went out! Raoul dropped his weapon, tumbled and rolled to his left, just avoiding raking claws and snapping fangs of the summoned creature. He rose quickly, drawing an oversized R'Shannian dirk. The Mephit leaped onto his back. Snarling and scratching, its claws were quickly entangled in his red cape. If the oozing creature had spit its boiling water again, it could have done damage, but Raoul's dirk flashed up and over his shoulder and caught the creature square in the forehead. The Mephit screamed its song of pain and tried to disentangle and fly up and away. Raoul pulled his dirk back and with his right hand ripped the smaller Mephit over and in front of him in one swift movement. Dirk in left hand, thrashing Mephit held by throat in right, he turned. Tantoo's blade rocketed forward out of the thinning steam but connected with the Mephit's flapping wings instead of the mercenary. Raoul flung the dead creature at him, knocking him back. With a snarl he pulled another dirk from his belt and leapt forward. Tantoo managed to keep a grip on his sword, though it was wet. The Mephit fell away and the Assassin jumped back. The steam dissipated quickly and the charging Raoul came into view. His sword clashed and rang against the duel dirk-wielding berserker. Though skilled, the Assassin realized quickly he was overmatched both in ability and power. He cursed and then gasped as a dirk slashed and removed his right eye. As he reeled, a pain even greater racked him as a giant boot caught him in the groin. He dropped his sword and fell backwards into the muddy road. Fighting the pain, he clutched at his destroyed eye. "I can tell you who sent me..." was all he could croak. A boot in the face rocked him. Then another found his ribs. When he was finally able to catch his breath and open his one good eye he saw Raoul and two huge Neapolitan Mastiffs staring down at him. A blob a drool fell on him from the dark male and the lighter female sniffed his blood-soaked face. Raoul was smiling at him. "If you and your toadies are the best our enemies can send, I don't care who sent you." With that he stood up and began walking away. "Vlad, Harker, TABUK!" he calmly ordered. Tantoo's screams began as the Mastiffs did their work. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Tale of Two Cities #11 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Chimlevtal and vicinity: The earth tremors weren't regular, not "every twelve hours" or some such, but there was a pattern to them, Shau'nin was sure of it. If only he could work out the shape of that pattern, he might be able to find the cause and think of some remedy. They weren't serious earthquakes and no one was endangered by them. Yet. Just something you could sense, a feeling of unease that came and went. The old adviser sat on a bench, which could have used a cushion or two to comfort his old bones, and watched the goldfish pool patiently. He had found that the fish always knew when a tremor was coming, and that it was easiest to see the occurrence in the ripples that appeared on the still surface of their pool. Also, this was a quiet place, and an hour of quiet was a treasure worth savoring. And difficult to achieve. He could hear footsteps on the flagged path, coming closer. Well, it was Lord Kinnishan's garden, after all, and the ruler of Chimlevtal had a right to walk in it. Very steady footsteps, neither fast nor slow. Shau'nin didn't turn his head, but he appraised the sound as the goldfish did the earth tremors. The pace told him nothing. Steady and firm, as always. Kinnishan was not a man to wear his worries on his sleeve, or on his bootsoles, either. A hard man to read, Kinnishan, even after their long years of association. But a good man to serve, regardless. Kinnishan sat on the bench beside him. For several minutes, he did not speak. Finally he said, "The mysterious disappearances continue." "I know." "I had hoped that sending The Icelord and Lord Bosk to Carestos would...change the balances enough to...." "I know." Shau'nin turned to look at him. "And it may have done or may yet do what you hope. The problem is not a simple one or a suddenly developed one, so why should the solution be simple or quick? Those are two capable men. What can be done, they will do." "But my people still disappear." A faint tremor caused ripples on the surface of the goldfish pool. "And the earth still shakes," Shau'nin muttered. Carestos and other places: The magical window closed as the image of High Lord Bosk glared up and down the cleft for other enemies. The Icelord looked at Muirona, who was leaning back in her chair, obviously exhausted by the spell. It would be a few minutes before she was able to converse. Just as well. He could use the time to think. He transferred his gaze to the window, staring out across the harbor of this city that was a twin to Chimlevtal, like but unlike. He knew, he could not be deceived on such a point, that the magical window had shown him truth: his sword-brother was alive, armed and active, and probably enjoying himself. For now, Bosk did not need help. So what about this hostage/envoy situation that Muirona was suggesting? It was...peculiar, but intriguing. A chance to learn about one of the powers that threatened Chimlevtal's sister-city, and perhaps to do some good. Worth pursuing... yes. "Very well," he said, "I will go to your city of Mara Balor and meet with your king. If we can work together, then I will be a 'hostage' for Carestos and Chimlevtal." He was aware of Tempus and the Prince of Ar shifting uneasily behind him, but he stilled them with a small gesture. "My friends will come with me," he said to the elf. She hesitated and then shrugged. "Very well. Let us go at once." "Are there likely to be more of those things?" Bosk asked, trying to look both ways along the cleft at once. "I wouldn't think so." He could hear Molly slapping dust off her clothes, so she couldn't be too badly hurt. "Too bad. I was just getting into the rhythm." He peered down at the 'fire- troll', prodding it with one toe to make sure it was dead. "What was it?" "I don't know. Some kind of demonic monster." Molly came to stand beside him. "Expensive to summon and probably very difficult to control." "Summoned and turned loose here to do whatever damage it could," Bosk guessed. He tipped his head back to study the rock walls around them. "Is there a way out of this cleft?" "There should be a stair farther down that way." She pointed. "Then let's go find it." He detoured around the body of the fallen troll. "Who could have summoned the monster? How many OTHER magician enemies do you people have?" "It could be the same one who brought you to this world," Molly said. "You stabbed that person very thoroughly." "Yes, but he was--or is--a magician. Stabbing might not be enough to kill him. I've never tried to kill a magician before, and I haven't studied the art." "Art?" "Yes, there are many kinds of...people, or once-people, who can only be killed in certain ways. I have heard of a sort of vampire in the West, for instance, who can be stopped by any normal killing attack, but only truly and completely killed by...I don't know, special swords, or special attacks, or something. Like I said, I haven't studied that kind of thing." The cleft they had been following became a tunnel that any dwarf would have been proud to claim, though the walls and floor were scorched and cracked by the passage of the troll. Its path was a long, gradual curve, dipping slowly but steadily downward. To the side there were smaller tunnels and stone-carved doorways. Molly hurried toward one of the doorways on the outside of the curve, and reached for the door's massive iron latch. Bosk caught her shoulder and pulled her around behind himself. "I'm the one with the sword," he said, "and that troll thing might not be the only monster around." Muirona led the way to the back premises of the inn and opened a door that revealed stairs going down. The Icelord stopped her. "Are you proposing that we go to your king by a magical door?" Such things were unreliable on Ghea, he knew, and this world was so closely linked that he did not believe such spells could be used in safety here, either. "No, such things are only for the direst emergencies. The price is too high for frequent use. But there is a dock down here--" She slapped a hand over her own mouth and blushed. "Smuggling? That is not a subject that concerns me, and neither I nor my companions will mention it elsewhere." "Thank you." She stepped through the door and looked back. "I have a courier vessel here. It will give us the fastest practical transport." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 538): PUSS of ARENA FELINES (Garfield, mgr.) But what do those bums say? "Hit the road, Debby Tonte. CHIMLEVTAL needs a spyreport." Oh, well. One team deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 6 after going 4-0-0. Keep it up, SOL INVICTUS! MVP award for ULTHAR XANDO? STORMWATCH's proud of him after beating POSEIDONIS and getting 21 points. Talk about yer major upsets! POSEIDONIS' match with ULTHAR XANDO cost him a loss of 16 points! What a putz! BRILLIANT ORANGE fights so hard to be Duelmaster, then quits fighting and loses the title. No one said he was a genius... And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome BUSTER BUNNY. Aren't LOONY TOONS proud. (Oh, my.) Who was the wiseguy that said CHIMLEVTAL's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Victory Tavern? Don't look at me! I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just wing this stuff. THE STORMGUARDS was the most avoided team. Is a 648-524-26 record really that scary? I don't know what DARQUE FORCES' been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from THE STORMGUARDS, that's fer sher. Can STORMWATCH's HERUGRIM be more popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same? Some fights are really unfair. How do you think UNZOE THE SHAMAN feels about being challenged by BIJIN, 21 points above him? If BIJIN can't beat a warrior 21 points below herself, that she CHALLENGED, she oughtta be selling food in the stands! See if I ever talk to JARL FORKBEARD again! WAS DRUNK was so low when He challenged he. Hhmph! Is this how THE STORMGUARDS advances, by having their members (JARL FORKBEARD) fight people that are really below them (WAS DRUNK)? BAMBOO is being unfair. He's challenged down 16 against COMMANDER SPUD. I don't know why they let this stuff go on. (I'd better shut up) COMMANDER SPUD is a real man! He was challenged by BAMBOO, 16 points above, and BEAT him! Dark Arena, anyone? See if I ever talk to ULF STORMHELM again! SARONIKO was so low when He challenged he. Hhmph! ULF STORMHELM beat SARONIKO. No surprise about that. Really I'm not surprised ULF STORMHELM would do such a scummy thing, either. Ooh! Did STILETTO really know what she was doing when she challenged GERI? A 0-2-0 speaks volumes. (Zontoni said that. I don't know what it means.) STILETTO lost to GERI, but she got 1 points. GERI won, and got 3 points. I don't get it. What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone gets killed. Not after four more fights. What a bummer! TARL CABOT got wasted by KATANA! But with a 6-8-0, I guess THE STORMBRINGERS aren't too bummed. It was so gross when KATANA of AVENGERS killed TARL CABOT. They should start making warriors use safer weapons, or more shields, or something... What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!! I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Its been really albendranius! Chimlevtal is a thriving arena, and those are always fun. I will be making my decision after the tourney, I believe, when I will be taking a long look at how I am timed for Baltimore. If minimal tweaking is needed, then yes, I will reactivate Rogues' Gallery. If I need to put a lot of attention to my FtF squad, then I'll hold off until I can rationalize playing another team that is not tourney-bound, since I already have three of those (Mordant, Aruak City, Aradi). Wish me well in the mailer, for that will be where the choice is made, my friends. -- Lord Xiang Jorja -- The Middle Way 7? *grin* Appropriate for a Free Blader, don'tcha think? -- Lord Xiang The Zoo Keeper -- You can use DA, HA, WH, MA, BA, BS, MS, SS, WF, GA, GS, LS, HL & ML. Depending on other stats BS, SS & WH are probably best. -- RTR John -- Good to meet you on the sands. Let's do it again! -- Ulthar Es Destitute Sissy -- You are a joke. -- RTR Manager Dorque -- Now that you have your boys showing up to save your puny hide, you'll probably start running your yapper. I will remember your words, pud. -- RTR Sensei Jan, Destitute Sissy and Manager Dorque -- Let's arm wrestle! Your six stick arms against my right index finger. -- RTR Kats -- Who are the VC teams in 31? -- RTR The Icelord and High Lord Bosk -- <cracking knuckles> Time to mash some melons. Outta my way! -- RTR Master Janos -- Glad to fill in info where I can. Wish I had more. -- Crip 11th Commandment -- Hate those blind things. -- Commander Spud Endor -- Reversal of Fortune or Reverse Psychology? I'll let you figure it out. -- Psych Major Ull Stormhelm -- It's always an honour to duel (and especially defeat) a Stormguard. -- Major Pain The Icelord -- The Reunion Tour 2006 draws nigh! I am sharpening my blades and prepping the battle hammer! Est sularis oth mithas! Tal Mighty One! -- High Lord Bosk RTR -- I love the way you dispatch your enemies--brutally! Tantoo bemoans the day he set eyes on you, my friend. -- High Lord Bosk Master Janos -- I am sure I speak for many in the arena, when I say your devotion to the quill has lent a lot to the Chimlevtal newsletters over the years! Well met! -- High Lord Bosk VC -- Let's get it on! May your swords be as sharp as your tongues--if so, victory is already ours! -- The Council of Lords High Lord Bosk and Raoul the Rude -- I salute you, noble Lords! The Crying Cartel and Destitute N will be making an all out push to take us down. <yawn> How many times have we been threatened and insulted by these guys? OMNE JUS STAT IN ARMIS. -- The Icelord Tripwire -- Greetings warrior! How about a little bet? I'll bet your Bushmasters will NOT reach their 200th victory here in Chimlevtal in 06. Not that I'm going to try and stop you, but I'm not sure it can be done. How about we bet something valuable, like a case of Sam Adams? Good luck and good hunting! -- The Icelord The Cartel includes: Maximillian, Sensei Jan, Street Legal, Kat, Fizban, Firehawk, Phat Phat and M. Darque. Teams listed: Samurai Kids II, Why Did I Do It, Darque Forces, Club DV8. Maximillian will have a team here this turn and we hear Firehawk is returning with his Nighthawks. Anyone else Cartel? Destitute Noble is running Numbers Game, Just Desserts and All Night Long. Anyone else here in this coalition against us? -- The Council of Lords RTR -- I think Destitute N likes you. -- The Icelord Jorja -- Sure, you can do a team spotlight or three! -- The Icelord The Council of Lords is proud to present Chimlevtal History Facts: On turn #20 (6/24/87) there were 26 teams listed in Chimlevtal. They were: Walt's Kids, Berke's Buddies, Looney Toons, Medicine Show, Bene Gesserit, The Canucks, Motley Crew, Rat Pak, The Crowns, Margarees, The Bowies, Dust Devils, The Stormguards, Razers, Dead Seagulls, Hounds of Hell, The Wolfpack, The Non Entities, The 422 Crew, Spartans, Crusaders, Berserksgangr, Aggot Mashers, Rolling Death, Decembrists and S.C.T.V. The Duelmaster was Snow White of Walt's Kids. She was 15-3. Her style: TP. Council of Lords -- Forgive, for I had not wholly introduced myself, my team, or my affiliation last cycle. I am Kat, manager of 'Club DV8'. I am one of the managers under the banner of the Vendetta Cartel and as such, am designated your foe. RTR -- It takes a long, dedicated time before someone becomes an 'enemy'. It's not a term I toss about all that easily. 'Foe' is sufficient for the time being. -- The Calico of Cool, the MainCoon of Mainstream, The Feline of Funtime, The Persian Prince of Preamble, The Oh-So-Ever-Loveable-Me: Kat Damhain the Satyr -- I think you'd have done better in that fight if you hadn't kept stopping to ogle the women in the stands. Maybe if you came out to fight in blinders? -- Kambard Murh Paper Cut King -- They call you a "king" and you're female? I thought orcs had an unerring instinct for that kind of...oh, right. You're unfit to be one. And I guess whoever gave you the name, if you didn't pick it yourself, is also? Whatever. -- Mendal Monshil P.S. Wear gloves when handling paper. I know everything takes longer that way, but people hurry too much anyway. Ulthar Jarva -- It was actually all a plot on my part to get those "several days' bed rest." I was tired. -- Les Nayle Ten-Ton Tessie -- Ouch, ouch! Not on my toes! Damn, but you're clumsy. -- Norgen Pelh Ulthar Thorongil -- Gloves, that's what you need. The iron glove, not the velvet one. -- Kolum Marod Zookeeper -- It depends on your style, your strength, and your deftness. But sorting only by wit, battle axe, broadsword, dagger, fist, great axe, greatsword, halberd, hatchet, large shield, longspear, mace, maul, medium shield, morningstar, shortspear, small shield, war flail, and warhammer. I think that's all of them. BUT: Some weapons cannot be used if the ST is below a given figure. Some cannot be used if the DF is below a certain figure. And a few cannot be used if the SZ is below a certain figure. ALSO: Some weapons may be usable by a warrior according to his stats and still be really rotten choices because of his style. Do not, for instance, give a maul to an aimed blow. Don't give a war hammer to a lunger. -- Jorja RTR and the Stormguards -- Thank you. -- Jorja and the Middle Way Ed. -- They have no shews? That does not make me feel sympathetic, though. Let them walk on sand in their bare feet if that's what they want. -- Mendal Omshil Who has no shews? I'm confused, but if it's beach sand, it can be kind of nice going barefoot. -- Ed. Death to all warriors that are too afraid/too unskilled/too undermanaged to run in tourneys! -- D. Noble Bartofeles -- Congrats! Yet another graduate from your stable whose record in AD would plummet below .500. You must be so proud to join the knitting circle. Remember to use lotion on your hands so you don't develop calluses -- D. Noble RTR -- "Hiding" and guerilla warfare have been part of the scene for a millenium. Some view it as intelligent. Downchallenging is just proof that you know you cannot beat a foe on equal footing -- which is why you do it. -- D. Noble 24 March 2006 A few notes about e-mailed personals: You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e- mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all. If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn.
