                            *****DJI ORIGINS PART 1*****

Ookazi slipped through the swinging doors from the kitchen into the main tavern
room without making a sound. Phantasm knew the doors were in dire need of oiling,
yet he was impressed with the young spy's stealth. Ookazi gave a brief obligatory
bow to Phantasm and seated himself across from the Spymaster.
"Do you have anything to report?" Phantasm asked with a coldness only a
Spymaster could exude. The illusionist noted Ookazi's somber expression was
disturbed by a tiny tremor in the corner of his right eye. "You found something,"
Phantasm stated flatly. It was a simple statement, but Ookazi understood its
fundamental meaning and the thinly veiled threat enwrapped in those three simple
words.
     "Yessir," Ookazi finally muttered.
"Well speak, I have other matters to attend to this evening," impatience dripped
from the illusionist's voice.
"I heard many stories, but the most common and believable of them goes as such,"
Ookazi began his tale about an Aruaki....
                                ********************
A gloved hand tore the announcement from the road side oak tree. He recognized
the artist, a Convincian by the name of Jasper. His lack of formal art training
showed in the minute details of symmetry. It was a horrible picture of Fiorra. He
would have to have a talk with Jasper when he returned to the king's house.
"Heh, planning too far ahead," Kat muttered to himself. He looked over the
announcement and only shook his head in disbelief.
"FOR THE CRIME OF HIGH TREASON
AGAINST THE CROWN OF HIS HIGHNESS KING RYLIAN I,
          FIORRA JHODIAN SHALL BE HANGED
UNTIL SHE BE DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!"
The royalists had moved quickly. Kat did not know his next step. He was
resourceful. He was well-connected. He was even capable of living without the
lavishness the palace offered. He was all these things, but now he was a wanted man.
His days of carefree leisure were over. She was to blame.
Kat knew the risks and he had pushed them aside. He fell for her womanly charms
and now it had cost him everything. He knew her execution announcement was meant to
draw him from hiding. I would have followed the same plan, he thought. Yet he would
not risk his own life for her. If only he had listened to the voice in his head as
it continually told him not to go any farther. It was over for her now and only
beginning for him. She would soon be dead for crimes she did commit, but he would be
hunted as an accomplice.
"You are brave to show yourself in the open," a voice said from the trees with
amusement. Kat hated when Zara tried to sneak up on him, but he refused to show any
surprise at the monk's sudden appearance.
"You're late," the Aruaki noted. He was in the open waiting for the monk to
arrive. "What did you find out?"
Zara did not look like a typical monk. He had a large, athletic build more
suited to gladiatorial combat than prayers. His shoulders were broad and one could
easily picture the firm muscle structure under his burlap robes. A cut of horse hair
rope cinched around his waist acted as a belt and displayed a few leather pouches.
Kat had never inquired much after the monk. He was the likeable sort and Zara had
proven himself useful over many adventures with valuable information. The Aruaki did
not know how a modest monk could be privy to the information he shared at times, but
he dared not lose such a profitable resource as Zara by asking too many questions.
"The execution will be open for public display as the post reads. They have
been questioning her throughout the night." Zara paused for a moment letting the
Aruaki process the information. "She maintains your innocence even in torture," he
finished.
Kat's face flashed with anger, "Is that supposed to relieve my concerns? The
more she declares my innocence the guiltier I look to the inquisitors! Her crime is
treason, she deserves the hand she has been dealt, but I refuse to be a scapegoat for
the King's incompetent security!"
Zara endured the Aruaki's rage. He could only imagine being accused of treason
when your only crime was trusting someone. Despite his pity for Kat, it did not
change the situation. Kat was now a hunted man and the King's assassins would surely
be hunting him to the ends of the Ghea. "I have prepared secret passage for you to
the free city of North Fork," Zara finally said. "It isn't the greatest destination,
but it will take you from the lands of Andoria and hopefully out of the King's
reach."
"North Fork? Isn't that place in the middle of a swamp?" The questions were
not questions of protest only curiosity.
"It is," was Zara's response. He then shared the simple plan of escape with
Kat. The Aruaki was accustomed to the intricate games of the royal house. As an
advisor to the king, plots and sub-plots had opened and closed before his eyes and
ears everyday. This plan held no elaborate maneuvering and lacked the levels of
complexity that Kat so loved, but it was a way out.
"Finally, meet with Levi at the south gate and he will make sure you get to
North Fork," Zara finished his explanation. He knew Kat had committed his every word
to memory and there was no need to repeat the plan. The Aruaki looked into the
distance toward the Andorian palace. Zara knew his thoughts. "You can never
return," was Zara's answer to Kat's unspoken question.
"Deep down I know it to be true," Kat whispered. "There is always hope, my
friend. You of all people should know this," he patted Zara on the shoulder. The
gesture was a means to lighten the somber mood, but also say thank you to the monk.
"Hope is fleeting where the King's Ears and Hands are involved. You must be
off, my friend," Zara grabbed Kat and turned him in the direction of his first
destination. "I do not know if we shall ever cross paths again, my friend, but I
will keep my ears to the winds for word of you."
Kat gave a quick nod to the monk and was off into the wooded regions of Andoria.
It would take him two days to reach his first rendezvous point and nearly a week to
reach the swamp of North Fork. The journey would be difficult, but necessary to keep
him from the King's assassins.
                                ********************
"Interesting," was the only remark Phantasm made to the spy's story. "So he was
assisted by a monk to flee Andoria. I have heard every aspect of that story, but
that is a new twist on the tale."
Ookazi looked puzzled, "You knew all that I have told you? Why did you send me
on this errand if you already knew?"
Phantasm may have been amused by the question, but it was difficult to follow
any of his emotion with his face wrapped in white linen. "You wished to prove your
worth to me and I gave you a task. Any more questions?"
     "No sir."
"Good. Report to the guild house for your next assignment," the illusionist's
command was brusque, but Ookazi knew its deeper meaning. He was no longer a field
operative, but he was now to be stationed in Illis on the gladiatorial squad. It was
a promotion, but only a worthy promotion if Ookazi could make it to Lady Greywand's
Isle.
Ookazi left the tavern quietly through the kitchen. Phantasm sat and pondered
his new information. He knew Kat had fallen out of favor with the Andorian king
because of a love affair. Kat had bedded a Karnhorn ambassador who turned out to be
an assassin sent from the Karnhorn satrap. The Aruaki was oblivious to his lover's
secret agenda, but fury of a monarch is not easily swayed and Kat was to be an
unfortunate victim.
The monk was a new element to the story. Phantasm knew that Kat had escaped
Andoria, but this was the first mention of Zara. He would have to investigate this
mysterious new figure further.
Creaking boards near the tavern entrance told Phantasm his next appointment had
arrived. Would this spy's work be as productive as the last. He would have to
listen to the information and see where it led him.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Well, inheriting the throne is not exactly the most prestigious way to become
Duelmaster. Still I'll take it. Sorry, Unzoe, but it looks like Svein Forkbeard
came up a tad short by about 14 points.
I suppose there's a few people I should thank for their help in my ascending to
the throne. First is, of course, the departing DM, Unzoe, for getting invited and
vacating the throne. This, naturally means that I also should be thanking the
Gladiatorial Commission for giving Unzoe the invite and thus getting him out of my
way. I certainly can't overlook Cinnimon Rolle, who played an important role by
sitting out last turn and thus leaving me without much competition. Finally, I must
thank my opponent Horagalles, for teaching well, learning better and being tough
enough to provide a good fight without being too tough to beat. Your contributions
to my success are all appreciated.
Now, if Drake's run the numbers properly, then he says that if I retain the
throne this turn I'll get my invite and be immortal. If I lose this next fight, then
you're all stuck with me a while longer. Looking over the field of Challenger
Champs, I see some slim pickings. There's only 8 of you and one was inactive this
last turn. Normally, my first challenge would go to Cinnimon in order to try to
unite the Rec Leader and DM spots, but since he's sitting things out, he's off the
list. So, I'll just go with the next two in line. So, Mikado & 11th, I look forward
to meeting up with one of you next cycle.
Later all, and never show up to a duel with a wooden broadsword. Not unless you
want blisters, that is.
-- Your DM, Retaeh T. Maerd

                                      SPY REPORT

Good day, in CHIMLEVTAL a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets
poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can
make the difference, as AVENGERS is pushed out of top team by THE STORMBRINGERS, who
came from 4th with a 4-1-0 this turn. I want to know who's buying the drinks for who
tonight at The Victory Tavern, seeing as CISUM S. EKARD's 75-68-5 has earned them 3rd
place in the ranks. Now, what did these guys have for breakfast this morning? OUT
OF NIFLHELM has turned a 3-2-0 into 18th place from 34th. Give me the recipe! Now
keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for SOL INVICTUS,
whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 9 into 15th. The OVERLORDS guild has had a
4-1-1 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind
of thing can lead. And let's see, TNEG UNDET fought MAYTODD and gained 30 points and
contributed to CISUM S. EKARD's 4-0-1. KATANA has lost to ULL STORMHELM, falling 15
points, while helping make AVENGERS a 1-3-0 turn. This turn RETAEH T. MAERD
challenged MIKADO in what was CHIMLEVTAL's Title bout. Defending his title for
another turn, RETAEH T. MAERD kept SHERMANS STABLE's warrior, MIKADO, from claiming
the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources
that The Victory Tavern uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the LORDS OF
VALHALLA stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on CHIMLEVTAL, what are
you afraid of? And guess who avoided LORDS OF VALHALLA stable the most? Believe it
or not, it was OVERLORDS. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn
was STORMWATCH's warrior ULTHAR ES. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster! I don't know about you, but CINNIMON ROLLE challenging down 51 points to
STORMWATCH's ULF STORMHELM, is not really worthy of ALL NIGHT LONG. It pains me to
see warriors take advantage of the system like this. CINNIMON ROLLE won victory over
ULF STORMHELM, as if it surprises anyone. Tsk, tsk, tsk. ULTHAR THUUNE, does your
manager know you're challenging down 21 points to fight SNORTY MCSNORT from ALL NIGHT
LONG? I thought challenges were for warriors, not cowards looking for easy wins.
ULTHAR THUUNE beat SNORTY MCSNORT, is nothing sacred? Well now, what do you expect
when someone like ULTHAR REDBEARD from STORMWATCH challenges down 19 points to fight
APACHE of PLATOON? Well, surprise, surprise, ULTHAR REDBEARD was defeated by APACHE,
and by the way, ULTHAR REDBEARD now has a recognition score of 18. Building dreams
on hope, NOMANDATTER challenged up 26 points this turn to take on LODEN NORVIS from
MIDDLE WAY 7 stable. And crowds were on their feet when NOMANDATTER claimed a
victory from LODEN NORVIS, and now has 24 points for hers efforts. In a brave
attempt, VALKYRIE from LORDS OF VALHALLA challenged up 22 points to fight 11TH
COMMANDMENT from the NUMBERS GAME stable. VALKYRIE perhaps got hers just desserts,
seeing as she was bested by 11TH COMMANDMENT and ended up with 78 recognition points.
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. MAYTODD has departed CHIMLEVTAL,
leaving SHERMANS STABLE without their 13-10-0 warrior. Question, just what was hers
team doing at the taverns last night? I guess it was coming sooner or later, MIDDLE
WAY 7 has lost MENDAL OMSHIL, and CHIMLEVTAL is bound to miss him. For a little
while, at least. Is it really true that CHIMLEVTAL has more dishwashers per capita
that fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Always good to rest in CHIMLEVTAL, but never good to wear out my
welcome. Look for me in future turns. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to
paper-- Alarond the Scribe

Well, D. K. Goat, you certainly learned from some great ones. Those guys can take a
hunk out of anyone's axe! -- Sir Steel

Icelord -- I've been busy. I've actually spread myself too thin since the great
debacle. I think I'm now running in something like ten different arenas. Three full
teams and a bunch of singles and two warrior teams trying to time for spring. But
I'm still here. Besides, I don't have any real reason to chime off now. When you
stand up to help fight something and your legs get taken out from under you from the
inside, it kinda leaves a bad taste in your mouth from all the dirt you have to eat
before you get back up again. So no worries. Once I get my act together here in the
next few weeks, I'll be back to normal. -- Apex

Crambus -- Pulling the implement is only half the action, as the other half requires
a few ergs of energy from the trigger finger--making for quite a long lasting smile
on the face of the perpetrator-now-victim! -- Sir Steele (with plenty of available
ergs)

Allied Axis -- Yes, indeed, that agency has been around for a long time. I wonder
why it is that its competition winks, grins, holds-hand-over-mouth-to-stifle-smirk,
etc when the AA is sighted? I would imagine a loud-mouthed, chest-pumping, in-your-
face, tiddly winks-winning, cannon-fodder alliance deserves better than that. You
think? -- Sir Steele

To Those New and Old in Our Fair City of Chimlevtal -- Worship whom you will.
Respect those you must. Crush who you can. But know that this is my domain. -- High
Lord Bosk

Guardian -- As I know you, you are the poster child for the Charles Atlas magazine
ads. You taunt RTR, yet you will not reduce yourself to sending one measly team into
Chimlevtal because it is a "slow" arena. Let me tell you, Mister. Chimlevtal is
more hopping than any other arena on Alastari. BTW, a word of caution: beware not
to provoke the ire of Raul The Rude too far. It has proven unhealthy on more than
one occasion, whelp. -- High Lord Bosk

Raoul the Rude -- Thanks for the Welcome. Our blades are sharp and we sleep with
them under our pillows. -- Wretch, mgr. Northern Lights

Ouch. I hope you have thick pillows! -- Ed.

The Council of Lords -- A hunting we shall go, but who is the hunter? and who is the
hunted? -- Wretch

Chareos -- Since I beat you I get to stay out of the DA. Thanks. -- Flicker

Modison -- You kinda reminded me of a bloody pin cushion. -- Haze

Out of Niflhelm -- I guess we met here before in 8. Good luck to you. -- Wretch

Nomandatter -- 'Twas a good effort while it lasted. Thanks for the learns. --
Shimmer

Ulthar the Pious -- My manager says we aren't allowed to fight any more due to our
terrible showing. So please don't challenge me; I can't stand it when he's mad at
me. -- Shaker

Minerva -- I am sure you didn't mean to kill Dancer but we can't let that pass.
Expect someone sometime to do something. -- Wretch

Turn #275: Let's see who shows up. In the past several months some managers have
talked a good game, but where are they now? Where did Kat go? How about those
"avengers of light?" -- The Stormguards

Destitute Noble -- You will, no doubt, note that Unzoe the Shaman enters the
Chimlevtal HOF this year. He did get slain at the FTF, but as an immortal, he lives
once again. Because Chimlevtal ran on the weekend of the FTF, an administrative
oversight did not get him put back into the system and allow him to fight on turn
#274. He should have been here. (He actually challenged the dark arena.) No
griping on my part, sometimes those things happen. I just wanted to clarify that he
is alive and well in case you were wondering. -- The Icelord

Altar -- I was hopeful that you would show up last turn for a rematch. Alas, you did
not. I will pray for you. -- Ulthar the Pious

Sir Steel -- No doubt, Slugbait is one of the greatest managers in the history of
Chimlevtal. He and his Unfit To Be Orcs entered the HOF in 2003. He would have a
second team in the hall, Orcs Hate Physics, but he transferred them just shy of 100
victories. -- The Icelord

D.K. Toker -- There might be a loss of a few teams. I doubt Kat and Apex are going
to stick around. The "AOL" were ALL talk and a joke. Sensei Jan is still running.
But that is OK, not everyone can handle Chimlevtal. (Guardian, for example, talks
big but is too scared to show up.) I don't think we need any contests or anything,
the glory of honors here keeps the strong around. -- The Icelord

Stormwatch -- Of course Dessert Tribunal is hiding. They are ALL talk, NO clue. --
The Stormguards

RTR -- So true. Let's all say bye-bye to Firehawk! -- The Stormguards

Kolum Marod -- My investigation leads me to believe your second guess is most likely
correct. -- Oberon Stormblade

High Lord Bosk -- My thanks, 1st Sword! I once again was embraced by the unknown at
the FTF. It was the second time I experienced this. My mystic knowledge grows
because of this path traveled. I was unable to return to Chimlevtal on time. I had
intended to fight in the dark arena! WYRD BIO FUL AROED. -- Lord Protector Unzoe the
Shaman

Crip -- On turn #111 in Crysalis you printed a "Crip's Top 20 for all slow arenas."
When are you going to do that again? -- The Icelord

RTR -- Guardian is a coward. Always has been. Always will be. He states he is in
81, yet I haven't seen him listed as a manager in that arena on forums. He will
never back up anything he says. I do pity him. Such a sad (and clownish) figure. --
The Icelord

Guardian -- Capricious child. I realize you have numerous issues and you are looking
for pity. Sadly, the reality is, you are all talk and no action. You never back up
your words. You talk and hide. Sadly, you are a clown. You know RTR has no
warriors in Primus. I do though. Are you running all 4 of those enhanced freaks
every turn? Does your offer extend to me, Mr. Mouth? Why don't we meet in Home
Guard? I know you have tons of warriors just sitting around who would qualify for
the Guard. I'll be looking for you there, coward. It is a small arena and it runs
every 2 weeks. Make sure you announce yourself in the personals. Good luck. -- The
Icelord

The Council of Lords are proud to present Chimlevtal History Facts: On turn #130

of Heaven, Caesar's Pool Hall, Stellar Express, The Spice Pack, Silver Blades, Les
Gaulois, Team Supreme!!!, The Jammers, The Psychos, Black Plague, Dogs of War,
Brigands, Mongol Horde and Auto Shop. The Duelmaster was Andronicus of Caesar's Pool
Hall, an 11-9-1 PS. The StyleMasters were: PS: Andronicus of Caesar's Pool Hall.

Spice Pack. TP: Jacque De Molay of The Stormguards. PL: Chalmers of True Brits.

All -- Hmmm...That's one heck of a welcoming committee you all have here. Still, I
note a few familiar faces. In animus sincerus, I salute you. -- Michael Eldritch
P.S. Have any of the D.E. received my diplos? I speak particularly to DK Toker and
Blackstorm.

Shimmer -- Viciously well fought, wretchling. -- Nomandatter

Stormrune -- Not that it would have mattered, as you cleanly [or a bit messily--
depending on perspective] brought me low, but I wasn't supposed to be utilizing that
big iron plate as a weapon. -- Magnison

Haze -- Modi!! -- Modison

Apache -- Why do I have the feeling that I'll need to get used to such treatment? --
Kyndigdatter

Arrggh! -- The scars you gift me with are welcome...your time will come. *gap
toothed grin* -- Ginnungagap

Drake -- Would you be willing to lend some advice to an old sage? -- Michael Eldritch

Hammer -- Count me in, Chronomancer. If a slow no tourney opens, I want to be there.
-- Michael Eldritch

Destitute Noble -- Those golems are sometimes difficult to control! I told it to
kill Class of 2008 in the SECOND round, NOT the first! -- RTR

The Icelord -- Thanks for the Year in Review! -- RTR

The Icelord -- So true. Guardian is too scared to show up here and everyone knows he
is unable to back up what he spews from his pie-hole. He is indeed a sissy. -- RTR

Kats and Apex -- I thought you were going to show this arena a thing or two. ZZZZZZ.
I guess not! -- RTR

Guardian -- Don't pity me, stick man. Just show up. Oh, that would require some
COURAGE. Something, you as a COWARD, can't understand. Nice of you to make that
"offer" in Primus, but since I have no one there, you look like you're scared. When
you get a clue, look me up. -- RTR

Rabid Gerbil wasn't so bad. The DA killed him no problem!

Big Mouth Mega-Elite Dorks on Forums Who Dislike Me -- ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. -- RTR

I support the idea of allowing DA fights in ADM! -- RTR

Osiris -- See, the key to being a smart-ass is to either be funny enough that folks
don't mind and want to keep you around for laughs or inconsequential enough that no
one wants to take the time beating you up. Generally I try for the former and
occasionally achieve the latter. -- Drake

Wretch & the Northern Lights -- Dude! I loved your work at that Pink Floyd concert I
went to way back when. -- Drake

RTR -- Is there a bridge around here? -- Drake

Slate G35 -- You know, the worst thing about fighting a slate golem is the sound your
sword makes when you hit one. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard. That kind of
thing should be illegal. --- Nosser Peel

Kolum Marod -- Sorry, did realize what team you were on. Drake says Jorja's too nice
a person to be challenging her teams. My apologies. -- Tneg Undet

Tneg Undet -- Huh, you won that one while I was trying to figure out how to pronounce
your name. Slick trick. -- Kloum Marod
P.S. A present but unwritten vowel? An apostrophe? It's a mystery.

Katana -- I wish you elves and part elves would go back to wherever it was you came
from originally. You've been nothing but trouble since you showed up. -- Mendal
Omshil

Ull Stormhelm -- It doesn't do any good to tell ME I don't belong here, I've known
that for years! Tell my MANAGER! I've tried to tell her myself, but she just
doesn't LISTEN. -- Norgen Pelh

Ulthar Utherydes -- Any relation to the Utherydes clan of Ikhazdur? I wouldn't want
to get in wrong with those guys. Bloody death from the knees down. -- Les Nayle

Gorilla -- You're an animal, but at least you're an obedient one. -- Loden Norvis

24 January 2007
The Council of Lords would like to propose a rule change in ADM and Primus. We
propose that Lord Protectors ranked "Grand Champions" and below (ADM) and "The Tower
Guard" and below (Primus) be allowed to fight in the Dark Arena. This would not
impact the top rankings or title match. Any managers who never got his fill or shot
at fighting Gateway monsters would have it as an option. We believe it might spark
some interest in the ADM/Primus realm for some managers. If interested, speak up in
the newsletters or on forums under the "rules changes" thread and let RSI know. This
could even be something to try for 12 months and then be re-evaluated. What say you,
managers of Ghea? -- The Icelord sends....
