From time to time he referred to a hatily bound tome he had compiled on the subject matter--sentium. A metallic symbiont, and hopefully an answer to his current handicap. Morngrym made a few swift adjustments to the various dials and levers that sprouted in seemingly random fashion from his containment forge. Then, as the nearly subaudible hime of the elaborate mechanism wound down, he turned to Michael and gestured toward the viewing crystal. "There she is, boss," he wearily rubbed his eyes before initializing the decontainment fields, "the rest is up to you, and I'm thinkin' you probably know the details better than I." Michael half-smiled as he clapped his left hand on Morngrym's shoulder, "Indeed I do Grym, but without your own innate talents the reality of this project would have evaded me." Morngrym noted Michael's wistful glance at his missing hand. Somehow, even now, months after the injury, black rime still encrusted the jagged stump where his right forearm ended. Grym had watched his mentor-turned manager recover from wounds that made even this pale by comparison, but for some reason this injury was beyond Michael's ability to fix. He had witnessed Michael's growing frustration, as he attempted various methods both archaic and bizarre to restore the limb. It was the last, rather gruesome, test that had nearly broken Michael's will and sparked a distant memory from Grym's aprentice days, sentium. A miracle metal, capable of taking any form the wielder desired. A mere whisper of one of the wonderous secrets held by his guild's masters... Stepping toward the softly pulsating silvery mass, Michael reached out to it with his ravaged limb. At the same time, he sought its presence with his mind. A pure unsullied force, awaited him, eager to join a host. Giving no thought to the parasitic implications, Michael plunged his stump into the mercurial mass. For one long agonizing moment, Michael thought his grost deadened nerves were not going to accept the symbiosis. Then, slowly, the quicksilver-like substance flowed up his forearm, winding fluidly around his elbow. Thin tendrils plunged into the healthy flesh there, but only a brief flash of pain noted this fact. Michael could feel the draw upon his lifeforce, but shortly the sensation reached an equilibrium. With a feeling akin to the blossoming of a rose, Michael sensed the symbiotic presence open in his mind. Already, the oddly fluid mass resembled a spatulate-like hand, and as he brought it up to gaze more thoroughly at it, small prickles of sensation danced across it. With a focused thought, the limb arranged itself to his preferance, and in moments it resembled nothing less than a perfectly sculpted silver hand. Since it had flowed across the deadened flesh to anchor itself, even the rime was concealed beneath its sheen. With an awe-filled smile he turned back to face the silent smith, "Living metal... you have outdone yourself my friend." Morngrym slowly let out a sigh of relief--he's had his doubts. Michael had provided the necessary resources and schematics, but he was only a Journeyman of the Guild when he left. Few Masters would attempt to produce even small amounts of the unpredictable substance, and only Grandmasters did so with confidence. "Well then, it might take a bit to get used to the sensatory capabilities, but she looks right fine," Morngrym gave a broad grin, "with a little familiarity she'll provide you with any tool you need--aside from the hand." Michael nodded absently while flexing his new fingers, "It's time to move on, Grym," he glanced up to be sure he had the smith's attention, "get everyone together at the new headquarters." Morngrym grimmaced, "Do I haf to invite those Nifel...uh Nerfa..um... you know, THEM!" Michael chuckled at his friend's behavior, "The Chimlivtal crew...," he grew thoughtful for a moment, "no, it seems an old friend has called in a favor, and wishes to take control of the Niflheim gladiators for the present." Morngrym's puzzled expression caused Michael to elaborate, "No one you've met, Grym, but he goes by the name of Ebonariax the Maimed," with a rueful glance at his own hand he continued, "I don't believe I'll be calling him maimed anymore." With a shake of his head Michael again focused on Morngrym, "It seems that Hammer has made known that another No-Tourney arena is opening," he glanced at the rooms complex calender, "I believe I can manage this new arena's deadlines, and I wish to be a charter member." Morngrym sighed, "Well, I'd better get to gettin' then, boss," but as he strode for the door he glanced back, "if that hunk a' metal starts to actin' funny, you let me know--quick like, all right?" Michael nodded his agreement, "Don't worry, Grym, just make sure everyone gets my message. I've got to go to Chimlivtal and finalize a few matters with Ebonariax, but I want everyone here by new moon." With a curt nod, Morngrym stumped out of the room. Michael stood in silence for a long time... + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Tale of Two Cities #20 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + The Icelord had once seen, from a great distance and by arcane means, the explosion of a sun. It was the only comparison that came to him for this collision of powers. Fire and ice, love and hate, loyalty and desperation and purest chaos in a churning violence, magic, emotion, and the forces that defined the line between reality and disaster. One thing at a time. The strain on reality caused by the superposition of universes and the confluence of powers was the most critical, but partly masked by the other stresses. They would have to be resolved first--and fast--before he could address the main problem. So. The enemy mage was part of the main problem, a possible point of access, but he was also the farthest away. But both power and accuracy fell off with distance, and even more with distraction. An attack on the chief enemy before some of the other tangles were resolved would be a mistake. Muirona would have to hold against him for the moment, if she could. He willed her to understand this without being told in words, he had no time or attention to spare for words, and he thought that she did. Some kind of temporary stasis would be enough. The biggest distraction, a major concern in its own right, was the attack on Bosk. Bosk was not here, physically, or at least, not where The Icelord himself was physically. But his sword-brother's soul, and the thing that was coiling around it, that was fastened to it like a leech, was coming toward him through this "place" that was pure arcanum. Roiling the arcanum as the rapid passage of a storm would do. What WAS the thing? It seemed to have no identity of its own. Not a creature, then, but a spell. Something designed to take a victim's strengths and turn them against him. And just as every living thing had a weakness, so did every spell have its weak point. He slid mental fingers around the edges of the spell, not quite touching, searching for the weakness. Bosk felt sure that his head was going to split open if this power didn't find some other outlet. Some way for him to use it; the power wanted to be used, it was made to be used. Why couldn't it be something he already understood, a magical sword or the like? Maybe if he just visualized it as a sword...? But it kept twisting in his hands. Sometimes he could believe he was gripping a sword, but other times he thought he had hold of a viper. Except that there were no "times" where he was. No past and no future, just now and the power. He had a dim sense of Molly screaming and trying to grab hold of his arm, and he brushed her away. She didn't understand what was going on, and she was afraid. Besides, she might get hurt if she got in the way of the writhing sword. He felt himself... flying through the air, but... no, that was imagination. A dream, in a way. Because he was in... he could see it now, a place with no up or down, no right or left, forward or back. If there was nowhere but HERE, there could be no motion, no flying or walking or anything. He reasoned it out carefully; it seemed important that he understand this. He felt his sword-brother's presence, near but kept away from him by some barrier. This was wrong. The Icelord would be able to explain to him why this sword kept coiling into a viper, and how to control it and force it to obey his will, because it was magical, and The Icelord understood magic as he, High Lord Bosk, understood steel. But every time he reached for his friend, the serpent-sword was there in the way, coiling around his arm, mouth agape and fangs dripping venom. Bosk tightened his grip on the thing. It was more often serpent than sword, now. An enemy of some kind. He had defeated enemies of a many kinds in the past; he would defeat this one, too. He was holding it near its tail with his right hand, which left the head free to curl around toward his arm. It shied away from his vambrace, washed with untarnishable gold and engraved with holy sigils of his god. Curled farther, seeking bare flesh. Bosk watched it, eyes locked with the blank malevolence of the serpent's eyes. The eyes glowed and seemed to expand. Was this how snakes hypnotized their prey? But he was no rabbit! His left hand darted out and seized the neck. His fingers tightened. He would strangle it, or break its neck-- But it coiled between his hands, heaving and twisting with more power than seemed possible. Its body swelled in his hands, and he could feel his fingers slipping apart on the scales. He bared his teeth and dug in with his fingernails; his mustache stood out straight as spear points with the effort he was making. SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of CHIMLEVTAL brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. OUT OF NIFLHELM turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 9th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch DESOLATE ONES' heads swell from their 4-1-1 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see URN4A TREAT! win a fight and gain 30 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, GERI beat SNIPER and SNIPER lost 16 points. You're breakin' my heart. Going for broke or broken, our Duelmaster STONE GOLEM Dark Arena Challenged this turn. And if variety is the spice of life, CHIMLEVTAL may be getting bland, as RETAEH T. MAERD stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, CHIMLEVTAL? Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. What's the big D? ALL NIGHT LONG was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like THE STORMBRINGERS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, TNEG UNDET was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to TERROR TWIN of ALL NIGHT LONG for challenging up by 19 to ULTHAR THYDRIM. TERROR TWIN won to get 80 points of recognition. And we have MIMIR in a challenge, going down 11 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought MIMIR showed great skill and promise when he beat KISH. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and gone, and get to see if their team cared. CISUM S. EKARD has cause to pause today, as RETAEH T. MAERD was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of moods, I'll wager. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... MIKADO, a glorious 15-10-0 fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad SHERMANS STABLE. Ya gotta go sometime, and BEAR's time was this time. Hmmm, not a bad fighter, had he lived... (what? me pity?). Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see HORAGALLES and SOL INVICTUS at The Mourngrym Inn and Tavern tonight celebrating their bloodfeud victory over GORILLA. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? What does the CHIMLEVTAL arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of CHIMLEVTAL. I feel much better now. Good news in the realm of great music! March will see the release of "The Best of Acoustic Jethro Tull." Also, May 1st will see the release of the new Rush CD titled "Snakes and Arrows." Tour dates to be released soon, my brother! Tal. -- The Icelord Apex -- It will be good to see you "back to normal" soon. Come on down to The Rusted Cutlass, we will be sure to throw you out a front window, just to show you WE care! -- The Icelord Wretch -- Those are questions asked often in Chimlevtal! -- The Council of Lords Guardian -- Among your buddies, you might be tolerated but in Chimlevtal your legacy will always be that of a coward and of a clown. Oh, I noticed some of those Primus warriors you were bragging about are not even being run. What a loser. -- The Icelord The Animals -- I salute Gator. -- Bilskirnir Middle Way 7 -- I salute Mendal Omshil. -- Ulthar Thydrim Les Nayle -- I don't believe so. I am from Polaris. -- Ulthar Utherydes RTR -- Wow! Destitute N is really steamed about Bone Golem. I guess only "elite" managers are allowed to "tourney prep." Such hypocrisy. Ignore the rants of the sissy. -- The Icelord The Council of Lords are proud to present Chimlevtal History Facts: On turn #140 (10/5/96) there were 21 teams listed in Chimlevtal. They were: The Grey Elves, The Four Horsemen, The Devastators, The Stormguards, True Brits, The Stormbringers, South of Heaven, Military Mayhem, The Spice Pack, Caesar's Pool Hall, Dark Heart Inc., Noctropolis, Team Supreme!!!, Black Plague, Ouch!, The Nighthawks, Sorcerer Kings, Blazing Aces, Mongol Horde, The Dogg Pound and Auto Shop. The Duelmaster was Elvish Parsley of The Spice Pack, a 19-10-3 LU. The StyleMasters were: LU: Elvish Parsley of The Spice Pack, PL: Firefly of The Nighthawks, SL: The Highlander of The Stormbringers, ST: Cayenne Pepper of The Spice Pack, TP: Cow Umbrella of The Devastators, PR: Strahd of The Stormbringers, AB: Fellowes of True Brits and BA: Diablo of Dark Heart Inc. Mimir -- Very good. I thought I could get past the brick wall but I guess I was Wrong. -- Shimmer Atlanta -- Now I don't mind losing to someone when I challenge them but you could have at least taught me a few more skills. Very disappointing all around. -- Haze Ulthar the Pious -- Very close one. Glad it went to me, though. -- Flicker Ull Bloodstorm -- I would take the loss and the learns if I was you. The win isn't that nice when your opponent learns like that. -- Sparkle Forsaken -- Well, you proved your worth and my worthlessness. I shall dance in the dark next turn. Good luck to you. -- Shaker Drake -- I think you have us confused with someone else. I am not sure what you imbibed at that Pink Floyd concert but I think definately altered your perception of things. -- Wretch mgr. of Northern Lights The Icelord -- I, for one, thank you for your HOF and Chimlevtal History Facts. It is a serious effort and a lot of work and study to deliver this kind of information to the inhabitants of Chimlevtal. Well done, My Brother! -- High Lord Bosk Wretch -- That is to be determined... happy hunting. -- High Lord Bosk The Icelord -- Kat??? Kat who? Never heard of her. -- High Lord Bosk Firehawk -- Bye bye, my little Canadian boy. -- High Lord Bosk Unzoe -- Destiny, My Boy, Destiny! -- High Lord Bosk RTR -- Heed the words of The Icelord. Guardian only plays well in HIS sandbox. Invite him to another and he cries and runs home to mommy. It is quite embarassing. Let the child play in his own sandbox where he is safe. -- High Lord Bosk The Icelord -- As RTR said, thank you for The Year In Review. Your efforts are not for naught. Tal Warrior. -- High Lord Bosk Wretch -- It is always good to keep ones sword near at hand. -- RTR Guardian the dork -- I didn't see your boys in Primus last turn. I didn't see you in Chimlevtal last turn. I am not surprised. Continue to hide, coward. -- RTR Destitute Sissy -- I told that Bone Golem to fight last turn but it growled "I TOURNEY PREP." I will have to work on gaining more control over that thing and see if I can convince it to NOT TOURNEY PREP. I am sure you understand, you being a big TOURNEY PREPPING manager! Thanks for the sob story on forums! It was fun. -- RTR Apache -- Just trying to wake up your manager! Well struck! -- Ulthar Redbeard Big Mouth Mega-Elite Dorks on Forums Who Dislike Me -- ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZ -- RTR I support the idea of allowing DA fights in ADM! -- RTR The Icelord and High Lord Bosk -- Salute! Word comes to me that I am needed on a mission! I may travel to Polaris or the Elemental Plane of Fire! Maybe both! I await the story to unfold! -- RTR (it looks like you've added some life to Home Guard. Keep it up. I might join you this spring.) Wretch -- When you walk in the Dead of Night, lights become bothersome. No offense to your Dancer, but I always thought Successful Dancers were female. -- Azaziel, mgr Nocte Intempesta Ghost of Dancer -- No, it's the way ladies like it, besides you see what happens when a woman wants you to go the distance. -- Minerva P.S. I'm not Lillith. Michael Eldritch -- Greetings, friend! Welcome to Chimlevtal. Don't fret, I started the same way! -- Azaziel P.S. Don't you just love mis-spellings? Ulthar Utherydes -- What, I won? How'd that happen? Merely because of my greater experience? Neat! About time, too. I KNEW that experience would come in handy someday. But "someday" just didn't seem to be getting here. -- Les Nayle P.S. Your second names seems almost half-Greek in the sound of it. Odd, that. Nomandatter -- Naturally not. You're an orc, so you're an orc's daughter rather than a man's. That is obvious. And you have an orc's nasty temper, too. -- Loden Norvis Poseidonis -- Huh, at least SOMEBODY got something out of that fight besides bruises, but it's the pits, that's what it is. You get the win AND all the skills! Unfair! -- Norgen Pelh P.S. Oh, all right, it is fair. Or at least as fair as life is ever likely to be. Bummer, though. Ulthar Thydrim -- I didn't need that. -- Ghost of Mendal Omshil Gomorrah -- It may be darque, but it's kinda fun. -- Kolum Marod Oberon Stormblade -- Ah, good to know. Not USEFUL to know, but I do like knowing anyway. -- Kolum Marod Drake -- There are challenges and challenges. Come ahead. -- Jorja P.S. One of these days when (if) I have a spare moment, I want to ask you about good bookstores in your home town. Our congratulations to Retaeh T. Maerd. Anyone who survives to graduation has something to celebrate! -- Jorja 14 February 2007 RSI is now taking rollups for a slow version of the No-Tournament arena.
