And I saw when the Shepherd opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the
noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold
a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and
he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that
sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another:
and there was given unto him a great sword.
And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see.
And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in
his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, a blight has
covered Ghea. Look deep into the heart and take measure of those before you. See

And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say,
Come and see. And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him
was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth
part of the Ghea, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the
beasts of the Ghea.

Bosk sat up and looked around. Flat gray plain stretching away to meet a flat
gray sky in a flat gray line. Another limbo place. This one was cold, with a
whistling wind, and a few lumpish boulders for landscaping. He didn't like it. No
doubt it was better than having a mountain falling on top of him, but-- He
straightened farther, looked around closer at hand. At Molly, sprawled on the
"ground" beside him, gasping for breath; two familiar gladiators, Tempus and the
Prince of Ar, facing outward with swords in hand, ready for trouble; an elven woman
he didn't know; and best of all, The Icelord. Bosk heaved a sigh of relief. When he
and his sword brother stood together, nothing could defeat them.
But Bosk knew that look of utter concentration. Battle joined. He lurched to
his feet, staggered a little until the Prince of Ar steadied him on one side and
Molly on the other. "What's happening?" he asked.
"Some kind of magical bridge between worlds," Tempus answered. "We have to take
it down before an invasion army can come across it." He kept his attention on
something in the gray distance. "Looks like the army's on the move already."
Bosk squinted in the same direction. He could see movement, but not details.
His vision was a little blurry, probably from the mountain almost falling on his
head, but it would clear up in time. He blinked. In time for what? Well, for
whatever was needed, probably. He always rose to the occasion. It was a thing he
was good at. He dismissed the point as meaningless. "What should we be doing?"
The gladiator shrugged. "I don't know. Be ready to provide a physical defense
if needed, but The Icelord and Lady Muirona have to handle the magical end of it."
Bosk ran his gaze along the gray distance. He was no mage, but he'd fought
enough of them over the years to-- Ah! "Look there, beyond that... whatever it is,
tall skinny rock. See how they funnel down to pass it, then spread out again?
That's a choke point of some kind, and the place to stage a defense if we have to.
There aren't more than twenty past it so far, scouts, it looks like. We need to be
there before the main army pours through."
The Icelord grappled with the fragments of the spell that had attack Bosk. His
sword-brother was free of it now, but it would be better not to leave this debris.
It could infect anyone who happened upon it, physically or magically. The cursed
spell was so resilient, insanely so, it would NOT die despite his efforts. It had to
die, because the first person it attacked would be himself or Muirona when they were
fully occupied fighting the Chaos mage here. In fact, if he were the Chaos mage,
he'd press this deadly dust into service as a weapon and shield for himself.
He watched as it slipped again through the fingers of his magic, pouring away
like water through a sieve. The fragments glittered in an unseen light, eddied,
lifted and fell like swarming gnats. His eyes narrowed. This was another
manifestation of the Chaotic life that had allowed the spell to form a serpent
before, and other varieties of life before that. Gnats... were hard to catch and
kill, because even one escaping would defeat his purpose.
His purpose was not so easily defeated.
He gathered an icy wind and spun it into a whirlwind. Cold. Colder. Coldest.
His mind reached for a cold so absolute that no kind of life, no vestige of Chaos,
could exist within the volume he controlled. The effort pushed the limits of his
strength and skill and could be, as he well knew, deadly to himself and all around
him if he lost control of it. He bared his teeth. He would not lose control. The
motion of the spell fragments slowed, became stiffer. He shaped the image of a basic
hexagonal ice crystal in his mind and imposed it over the slowly rotating debris.
Bosk took a step toward what he thought of as the "pass," the choke point in the
invasion route. The elven woman sang a short phrase in a language he didn't know.
Molly caught his arm and translated. "She says if you move out there, you'll be
outside the area she can protect."
"Protect us from what?" Bosk demanded. His hand went to his sword. "I can
protect myself, and anyone with me!" He noted her raised eyebrow and sighed,
remembering the recent encounter. "Usually," he amended. He squinted at the
approaching horde. The leading scouts were close enough to see in detail now, and
they were not human. Not quite. Armed, though. "Where is her defensive perimeter?
We need to do something."
The elven woman sang another phrase. Dust leaped and danced along a curving rim
about fifteen feet away.
"There," Molly said, drawing her dagger and moving toward the line. "She says
it's purely a magical defense and we WILL have to handle the physical part
ourselves."
Bosk nodded and took his position directly between their little group and the
advancing enemies. He noted that the gladiators took the flanks without needing
orders. "You should keep back, Molly," he said. "You've only got the dagger--"
"Got a spare sword, if you can use it," Tempus said. When Molly nodded, he
passed the extra weapon to her.
The swirling spell fragments froze briefly into the crystalline form, and then
exploded with the mutual annihilation of perfect Order and perfect Chaos. The
Icelord had already retreated from the point of contact, forming a shell of passive
energies around it. The shell bulged and shivered, strained against the limits he
had set, then collapsed inward. He staggered mentally under the sudden shift in
stress patterns, and was aware of another mind staggering in some location that was
metaphysically nearby. His enemy, who had tried to turn the chaotic spell to his own
uses.
And by that flinching away, his enemy had defined a line between the two of
them. He drove a spear of ice down the line, raising a shield against the expected
counterstroke.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Greetings to my fellow warriors! My name is Cinnamon Rolle, and I am undoubtedly the
most stylish duelmistress to grace the throne here in Chimlevtal in some time!! On
top of that, I am the first member of our guild to hold the top spot in the arena so
it is quite the thrill to be where I am. As if all of that weren't enough, my ascent
to the top has led me right through three COL nincompoops in my last three "duels",
two of which I swear were holding the wrong end of the sword when they stepped out on
the stands! Nonetheless, I stopped giggling long enough to beat each of them
decidedly in one minute. Kudos to Stephen, the lone of the three of them that
actually lasted past my first strike. More of that to come boys, that advanced
master rating I learned against Stephen was not my first....
As for the recently completed tourney...it was a disappointment to me, at least--I
was only able to amass five wins. I truly thought I had a chance to lay claim to the
overall victory as I have done here in our glorious city, but alas, the competition
was too fierce. What's worse, I was five victories and no defeats at one point,
Noble said I got too cocky and forgot what I was doing. I suppose for once in his
life he may have actually been right. I could not tell--but it looked like my plight
befell many of our warriors here, as I did not see many familiar names on the roll
call of those who gathered the necessary eight wins to be considered tournament
victors. We can all collectively hope that we can and will do better next time--and
to any of those that I overlooked I apologize.
That is all for this turn Chimlevtal, as there is much training to be done! Our
squad is still ten fights below the .500 mark, and it is a joint goal of ours to
breach that mark before the New Year is upon us! For now, I bid you farewell!

SPY REPORT
So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Say good-bye to THE STORMBRINGERS, as they are
pushed from the coveted top team spot by the OVERLORDS stable. Coming up with a
solid 2-0-0 outing, CAESAR'S POOL HALL has advanced 8 places in the rankings.
Advancing in the rankings was RAVAGING HORDE who went from last turn's 8-15-0, to
this week's record of 12-16-1. Don't these new hotshots make you sick (or, if they
fought you, hurt)? WAR, on their very first turn, went 5-0-1. SORROW seems to have
it's eye on the top team spot, and if they continue having 2-1-0 weeks they may get
it! Hey everybody, watch out for THERMOPYLAE, who flew up 21 points in the rankings
after mashing SEVENTH HEAVEN like a melon. Keep your eye on this beast. Ya know,
some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. DIRDEN II was overcame by DISCORD
and drops 16 points. Our battling duelmaster CINNIMON ROLLE has managed to hold the
title, fending off POSEIDONIS' none too subtle advances. Better luck next time,
AVENGERS. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming
at that location.
Here is other news that is of note. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't
avoid ALL NIGHT LONG, please raise you hand. Wow. Does CHIMLEVTAL really have that
many liars? And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause
OVERLORDS beats feet every time ALL NIGHT LONG smiles at them. Try farming, eh? And
who is this TERROR TWIN you ask, with 77 points and a 9-9-1 record. Ooh, the tales I
could tell! Can any one out there say 'weasel'? Oh well, just saying ULTHAR URUV
will do. He challenged 17 points down to trash TERROR TWIN. Definition of petty:
ULTHAR URUV bested TERROR TWIN, a mismatch of 17 points. Challenging down 27 points
was CORNELIUS. Pretty soon he'll be using two shields and selling 'T.P.: The only
way to clean up' pins. Definition of petty: CORNELIUS won victory over BADGER, a
mismatch of 27 points. Getting lots of flowers from sympathetic fans was OBERON
STORMBLADE, who was successfully challenged by SLATE G35 who had a mere 24 points
more than OBERON STORMBLADE. Definition of petty: SLATE G35 dealt death to OBERON
STORMBLADE, a mismatch of 24 points. Can any one out there say 'weasel'? Oh well,
just saying HUNGER will do. He challenged 20 points down to trash ULL BLOODSTORM.
Definition of petty: HUNGER beat ULL BLOODSTORM, a mismatch of 20 points.
Challenging down 18 points was ULTHAR REDBLADE. Pretty soon he'll be using two
shields and selling 'T.P.: The only way to clean up' pins. Definition of petty:
ULTHAR REDBLADE defeated AWESOME 80'S, a mismatch of 18 points. Getting lots of
flowers from sympathetic fans was RYU-KISHIN, who was successfully challenged by
CIRCA 1968 who had a mere 18 points more than RYU-KISHIN. Definition of petty:
CIRCA 1968 killed RYU-KISHIN, a mismatch of 18 points.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Big deal, so TWIN TERROR got
mashed in the Dark Arena. With his face he was more at home with the trolls than
with us. (Waka waka). Proving again that CHIMLEVTAL is not rated G, SLATE G35 of the
NUMBERS GAME slew the warrior OBERON STORMBLADE in a rather bloody bout. Let's look
for a bloodfeud. Carrion Bird Heaven: OBERON STORMBLADE was slain by SLATE G35 (The
true definition of 'Street Pizza'). Congrats to SNIPER for revenging the death of
his teammate (but more importantly, feeding ULTHAR STORMHELM a bit of dirt). In the
'Oops, What Have I Done?' category, GERAR was mashed by SLOCUM, who let GERAR know
that killing members of SHERMANS STABLE is a no-no. Here's some advice: warriors
with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
