The ship's captain, D'Karan, was eager to get away from their table of alien stone. "Too easy for the storm to smash us against it," he said, before turning to bellow at his crew. "That is true," the mage Jehanvar said, "and also that we must move quickly to reach safe harbor. I mislike the taste of the weather." The Icelord glanced at the old man, nodding. He remembered the information gathered during the attempted invasion of Alastari from the east; Jehanvar was principally a weather mage. The Icelord was a mastar of weather magic himself, and he agreed with the Ferencian's assessment: the storm that was coming out of the east would be a bad one, and it was powered by more than natural forces. Their arrival from that other world had disrupted many balances. Beside him, Muirona was looking around at the sky. "It becomes very dark," the elf said. "How will you find a harbor at all?" "I don't know about sailing," the gnome/goblin Molly added, "but shouldn't you, well, maybe stay out here away from things you could run into until there's light enough to see? Sure, being wet and bounced around on this boat is unpleasant, but what's the hurry, really? It seems wrong to go through all we have so far and then die because we ran into the land. If that isn't a stupid question?" The old Ferencian smiled. "The sailors among us might phrase it differently," he said, "but your concern is valid. Or could be. But we face several risks, young lady, and that of running into the land in the dark is the least of them." He squinted into the darkness as though he could see... anything. And perhaps, as a mage, he could. "The storm itself is not natural," he said, "and the sooner we are out of it, the better for us. Beyond that, Nishtar, if he is in Monuntial at this time, will have sensed your arrival as I did, and sent a ship also, with one of his subordinate magicians. We do not want to meet them here and now." "All of this I grant and agree with," Muirona said, "especially if the Nishtar of which you speak is the one I also know of. But how will we find a safe harbor, or any harbor, in this darkness?" The Icelord exchanged glances with Jehanvar, just visible in the light from a lantern mounted next to the ship's compass. The older man nodded slightly, which the Polarian took to mean that the Ferencian would deal with questions, leaving The Icelord to work. He returned all his attention to the maelstrom of energies both material and magical that seemed focused on the ship. "In the ordinary way," Jehanvar said, "we would use the compass." He gestured at it. The needle was spinning and jerking erratically in its brass case. "But it is only a needle of enchanted iron, in the end, and when the Arcanum is tormented as now, it is useless. It has no judgment and cannot choose which poles of power to heed; it simply points to the strongest one. A man can do that, with the proper training, and even in this chaos can identify the true beacons. Our good captain D'Karan and his steersman both have that training." "I'm steering by the Barikala Light," D'Karan said, "and the beacon at the south end of the Daggerspines. Both are ancient and strong and can be heard clearly even now. The Monuntial beacon, too," he added with a grimace, "but I would rather dare the storm than steer toward it now that Nishtar controls that harbor." He grabbed for a nearby rope as the ship tilted sharply under foot. A voice overhead shouted something, the words torn away by the shrieking of the wind. D'Karan seemed to understand it anyway and began shouting at other members of his crew. The Icelord drew his companions a little away from the captain, into the shelter of... something not immediately identifiable. "We are being driven away from the shore," he said. "The wind has turned against us, and--" He peered out into the darkness. Lightning ripped through it repeatedly, revealing and concealing waves as big as castles, waterspouts like the trunks of ancient trees, glimpses of creatures difficult to identify in the strobing light. "We are under an attack," Muirona said. "It is unnatural for a sea to be so disturbed." "I think the Storm Sea must always be more violent than the sea you are used to in your own world," The Icelord said. "It was not named so in jest. But, yes, this is worse than normal expectations." He squinted into the night, most of his senses concentrated on the Arcanum that formed the foundation of physical reality. "This may be the unprompted action of Ghea attempting to restore the balances, rather than anything deliberately hostile." "Why this is happening doesn't matter in the end," the gladiator Tempus said. "If the ship sinks, we'll be just as drowned however it came about." "True enough." The Icelord stood taller, visibly throwing off the weariness of his recent struggle with Chaos. "Even working together, I don't think Jehanvar and I can tame this storm, but we might be able to create a calm eye for the ship to ride in." "A good thought," Jehanvar said, joining them in their shelter. He paused to wring water out of his beard. "And quickly. You who are men of steel shall be glad of it soon enough," he added. "The lookout reports another ship glimpsed, and I feel near certain that it comes from Monuntial. There may be fighting." "We'll handle it," Bosk said. There was satisfaction in his voice, and The Icelord suppressed a smile. His sword brother was a man of action, and when there was no action to be taken, it left him restless. "If we can give them anything half-stable to fight on," The Icelord said, "they WILL handle it, and very well. Let us try what we can do with the storm." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 579): INCISOR of FANGS (The Anarchist, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Greetings, Chimlevtal! It is amazing to graduate! 50 fights. One rating. I ain't the brightest, but like The Icelord always tells us "Just keep on keeping on" and true enough, like his 700 plus wins--ALL in Chimlevtal--my persistence has seen me through! Though High Lord Bosk is my manager (he gave up on trying to train me, cuz I ain't so bright), The Icelord kept prodding me onward. Thank you for that and est sularis oth mithas! Omne jus stat in armis and Tal! Your Duelmaster, Svein Forkbeard of the Lords of Valhalla SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. Say good-bye to WAR, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the DEATH'S DISCIPLES stable. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a look at PESTILENCE, who went down to 5th from 11th. Life is tough. Coming up with a solid 3-0-1 outing, CHAOS has advanced 9 places in the rankings. DEATH'S DISCIPLES is no joke as it posted a 3-1-0 week advancing from 8th place to 1st place. Hey everybody, watch out for CERIDWEN, who flew up 39 points in the rankings after mashing VALKYRIE like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. And falling like a basher in the top ten was GRIM REAPER, who dropped 10 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with ULTHAR THE PIOUS. Well, everybody's pal SVEIN FORKBEARD moved his record to 28-23-4 by defeating NORGEN PELH in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 12 recognition points. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the CHIMLEVTAL arena. Did you hear that THE STORMGUARDS was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of THE STORMGUARDS' warriors, I'm not surprised! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch THE STORMBRINGERS' act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from THE STORMGUARDS. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, ULTHAR THE PIOUS would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, CHALDEA went after LOWLY WORM, who was higher by 19 points. Well, when the dust settled, CHALDEA bested LOWLY WORM. Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Well, the arena is no place for slow learners (and hopefully T.P.s) and CERIDWEN demonstrated that very violently on VALKYRIE's body. For those of you who missed it, Death showed up, grabbed NORGEN PELH by the ear and took him away to a place where he won't need a coat. Big man! SVEIN FORKBEARD kills NORGEN PELH. Who ya gonna fight next, SVEIN FORKBEARD--Minnie Mouse? I hope MIDDLE WAY 7 has a good enough fighter to beat the snot out of SVEIN FORKBEARD. Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh? Well, there's the manager of the CHIMLEVTAL giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?).
