"You'll have to move away from the wreckage so the salvagers can get at it,
sirs," one man said to them. He was as lean and ragged as the rest of the
Barikalans, but had the unmistakeable air of a minor official.
One of the sailors off their ship, Bosk thought he probably was the official
captain, opened his mouth to... protest, most likely.
Jehanvar silenced him with a hard look. "The ship has served us well, Captain
Rikmar," he said, "but it is now worth nothing but salvage. And what would you do
with bits of wood and canvas and rope? Leave these people to it."
"I could have made some smaller vessel to take us away from here," Rikmar
protested.
"No one can leave Barikala," the salvage official said.
"That is going to change." The Icelord turned from his survey of the sky and
the sea behind them. "It is to break open the barrier around the island that we have
come."
"Ah... you'll have to talk to Lord Warhal about that," the official said.
"Then let us do so at once."
They followed him along the beach and up a stairway cut into the bank and
reinforced with weathered timber from other wrecks. The conversation of the gleaners
behind them, and the smash and hiss of the waves, faded as they moved inland. There
was no faintest movement of the air, and the sky was a pearly dome like bright mist.
The town of Barikala presented an appearance of confusion. To the antique
stonework left by the Van from before the last Chaos War, and the somewhat younger
but still centuries-old buildings that came later had been added a shanty-town built
mostly of driftwood and dating no farther back than the closing of the barrier around
the island, litte more than ten or fifteen years. Despite their relative youth, even
the shanties had a settled look, as though they had survived enough storms to have
proved their strength. There were people coming and going, more than The Icelord
would have expected for the original population of Barikala. But there had been
shipwrecks before theirs, and some of the sailors must have survived to be added to
the population. They were plainly clothed, and often the fabric was patched. Small
carts passed them hauling driftwood, baskets of fish, some kind of root crop he
didn't recognize. No one bore arms beyond a dagger, that he could see.
Perhaps noting his attention, the guide said, "Everyone works here, that is
necessary. We can't import food, you see. So all the interior of the island must be
farmed, and we fish along the shores, too, especially after a storm. If you can
dissolve the barrier...." He hesitated for several moments. "I scarcely remember
the time Before, I was just a child then. I don't really remember what it was like
here then. It's true that our life here is shaped by our limited resources, but we
don't have the disturbances of the Outer World, either."
Beside him Jehanvar said, "When we break open the barrier around the island,
there will be changes. Not all of them will be good. There will be confusion,
discomfort, and strife. But the total effect on your island and population will be a
good one. Men are not meant to be so circumscribed."
Which was both true and not true, The Icelord knew. Some men were more
comfortable in a strictly limited setting. But they were not the men who made the
world happen; they were followers only. Soon or late, those here whose nature was
active and aggressive would find themselves fighting each other, and in the end, all-
-even the followers--would lose by it. "How many former gladiators remain here?" he
asked.
The Barikalan shrugged. "I don't know, nobody talks about that anymore.
Maybe... a hundred?"
"Out of what total population?"
"Two thousand seven hundred forty-nine, plus whatever number came ashore from
your ship."
The Icelord nodded. Of course they would know exactly. They were almost
certainly rationing food and would have to know. "How many able-bodied men?"
"About nine hundred, that varies. There are sometimes injuries, you see, though
we have been spared any serious disease."
"It must be a constant worry," Jehanvar remarked, "whether any particular wreck
will bring a plague."
"Lord Warhal and his council are concerned about that, it isn't my department,"
the official said. They turned a corner and he gestured ahead to a stone building.
Old stonework, if not the oldest, and sprawling into fair-sized complex of buildings.
"You'll find Lord Warhal there." With which he turned on his heel and left.
"Damned rude!" Bosk muttered.
"We make him uneasy," The Icelord observed.
"And there is no wonder to that," Jehanvar added. "We are threatening to
destroy his reality when we speak of opening Barikala to the world again."
"Let us hope that Lord Warhal is more flexible."
Such records as High Lord Bosk recalled would put Lord Warhal of Barikala's age
at fifty-five or sixty. He looked older. Lots older. And worried. But he was
courteous and willing to give them a hearing, which was a start. The Icelord and
Jehanvar did the talking, and Bosk left them to it happily enough.
When they had finished, the old man leaned back and sighed. "I have some
concern for the magical balances which might be disturbed by your efforts," he said.
"The balances in Alastari and on Ghea as a whole--" Jehanvar began.
"Those are of only academic concern to me," Warhal said. "So long as the
barrier is up, I do not believe an disruption of the Arcanum in the Greater World can
affect this island. But your attempt will be made from inside the barrier, and
whether it succeeds or fails, we'll have to live with that result. It could, if you
fail, make things much worse here than they are now." He sighed again. "And yet I
must allow, even encourage! your efforts. A disruption of magic is a concern, but it
is not the greatest one. Barikala's resources are too limited to sustain this
population for much longer."
"You're concerned that your people will start dying--"
"Everyone dies," Warhal said. "I'm concerned that they'll start eating each
other."
There was a moment of shocked silence.
Bosk ventured a comment. "They didn't look so desperate. Thin, maybe, but not
starving, and everyone was busy."
"They are busy," Warhal said. "I've seen to that--keeps them from worrying too
much. Thinking too much. I hope none, well, no more than a few, have realized where
this will end up if we aren't relieved."
"You fear a panic," Jehanvar said.
"Yes. Desperate men take desperate measures, and this island cannot support
more than a third of its current population without outside resources. Everyone
works together now, well enough, but let them realize that some will begin starving
by the end of this year..." He shrugged and looked away. "There are many hard men
here, and some are clever enough to argue that it would be a 'mercy' to kill off the
weak before they began dying of starvation. I will not have it, so long as there is
anything I can do."
"There is a thing that can be done," The Icelord said. "I can do it, Jehanvar
can help in the doing. We can take the barrier down and bring the island of Barikala
back into the world."
"At which time, if I understand the records correctly, the unregulated power of
the Light here will endanger all Alastari," Warhal said. He raised an eyebrow.
"You are correct," Jehanvar said. "And we are hoping for just that risk."
"The current problems with the magical Arcanum of Ghea are susceptible to
alleviation by the actions of Sheila Greywand," The Icelord said. "She has not
bestirred herself to do anything. Yet. But all the evidence suggests that if
Alastari, the actual physical land itself, not the people or the political entities,
is endangered, she will act. So we will make it clear to her that she MUST act. I
would expect such action to reharness the Light of Barikala as well as stablize the
Arcanum generally. In fact," he frowned, "the energy of the Light may be necessary
to that stabilization."

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly CHIMLEVTAL games. There were bitter words at DEATH'S
DISCIPLES' guildhouse after a 0-0-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into
14th. Dark Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the
corner! Witness how this week RAPTOR went 3-2-0 to move up 4 in the rankings. My
praise to CAESAR'S POOL HALL for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a
skillfully fought round deserving of notice! MARLENUS caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested FREKI and was awarded 20 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, MARLENUS put down FREKI,
causing him to lose 11 points of recognition in the process. The city has turned out
in honor of CERIDWEN, for with hers arena victory she may now lay claim to the
highest position in the city! Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in
duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city CHIMLEVTAL. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in
CHIMLEVTAL these days is RAPTOR. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid
them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the
better part of last week avoiding RAPTOR. Indeed it was LORDS OF VALHALLA. Loose
talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many
fighters are after OSWELL QUIRN. Watch your back! THERMOPYLAE must really be
harboring a grudge against the THE STORMBRINGERS guild! Merciless, 34 challenged
down ULTHAR REDBLADE points this week to duel with it. All the city knows the duel
went in favor of THERMOPYLAE. I shall not fail to spread the word in other cities of
this "mighty" victory. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it
seems that DIRDEN I posted a challenge against the more highly recognized CERIDWEN.
The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand DIRDEN I lost to CERIDWEN. Remember
warriors, this is the discipline of steel. I can not but mention with disdain the
name of PARCHED who this week posted a challenge to a warrior a full 9 points below
in the rankings. I thought PARCHED showed great skill and promise when she beat
OSWELL QUIRN. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena
there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
The girls are as pretty in CHIMLEVTAL as ever I remembered them....and the
fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Ahh, but I can hear the spires of
a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle
walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.--

THE STOMPING GROUNDS
The new all-basher arena will be in Seam, DM 20. Only new teams (0FE) may
participate. The only rule is that all of your warriors must be bashers.
The first turn of the contest will be due on Monday, April 28. It will be a slow
turn-around arena. If you wish to enter a team, please submit your new team and first
turn strategies before then. Only one team per manager, please.
This arena will stay open indefinitely, providing there is interest (i.e., this is not
a contest that runs a set number of turns, although there are prizes scheduled after
the first 15 rounds). For more information, see details in the first newsletter or on
the forums.

Zeb Karan looked around the table at the rest of Dwes Eg's staff. Arenamasters,
standby and Dark Arena warriors, stewards and infirmarians, even the maintenance crew.
There was wine and beer on the side-table, even sandwiches, but no one was partaking.
"Stop looking like your dog died," Lew Voth said. He had once been the
arenamaster of Sentern and had taken his turns overseeing the fights in Dwes Eg. "We
all knew this day would come. When are they closing us down?"
"Immediately after the tourney, according to the information I was given."
"Short notice," Jame Rinvar, another arenamaster commented.
"No offense intended, these things just creep up on people. Tourneys make it
worse, I suppose, all the new teams being entered." Zeb grimaced. "Some of the file
cabinets have exploded from over-stuffing, you know, and it takes so long to run
through all the registered gladiators to find those who are planning to fight on any
given day that the day is OVER by the time we're ready to start."
"Which is why they closed down Sentern, Cimmeriac, and Firehold," Lew pointed
out. "This is the same thing all over again."
"Cycles," Jame said. "Things happen, and then later they happen again. We live
with it. And Dwes Eg did last for, what, eight and a half years before it reached the
explosion point. That isn't bad. That's forever, speaking practically."
"Eight or nine years is not forever--"
"The only thing that's real is today, and maybe, up to a point, tomorrow. I
don't see a problem with this. What are the new parameters, Zeb?"
"Dwes Eg remains open, existing teams can run and can recruit new members. BUT,
no new teams will be accepted. New teams will go into a new arena, DM 84, running its
first turn on the seventh of May. A regular two-week cycle."
"So Dwes Eg isn't actually being closed, just closed to new teams. Okay. This
works," Jame said again. "Number 84... does this mean it'll be out at that Blackstone
place? Rotten weather half the year, but I suppose you could say that about any site.
What about regional allegiance?"
"None specified in the data I received. Probably a personal-choice situation,"
Zeb said.
"Transfers?" Lew asked.
"I don't know about transfers IN," Zeb said, "but I'd guess yes, they would be
allowed. No transfers OUT, though. None out of DM 82, for that matter. Once you're
in 82 or 84, the only way out is death or graduation."
"That fairly describes most arenas," Jame said. "Anyone who takes up the
gladiatorial life has already accepted that."
