                             Notes from the arena champ.

Well, I am trying to keep the streak alive.
I thought Bumble would have been around longer to help with the new recruits.
In the mean time, I will probably be in this top spot or near it for a while to come.
I look forward to seeing many of you come through me on your way out of this
arena. -- Drone-On

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
CHIMLEVTAL brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Now keep the taverns open late
tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for MIDDLE WAY 7, whose 0-5-0 this turn
dropped them by 5 into 8th. Ha! THE STORM REAVERS turned their 4-1-0 turn into a
2nd place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on
hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-0-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, MORE
DESTROYERS, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. And if variety is the
spice of life, CHIMLEVTAL may be getting bland, as DRONE-ON stays top dog in the
city. The Victory Tavern, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do
they get this stuff? From CHIMLEVTAL's trash dumps?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward.
CHIMLEVTAL, I am losing what little hope I had in you. BAD NEWS BEES the most
avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And who led the way in this
mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was THE FARSEERS. Ha ha
ha ha! Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, DAIKKAN was this turn's most challenged
warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to
VENGEANCE of THE STORM REAVERS for challenging up by 20 to TERROR TWIN. VENGEANCE
won to get 93 points of recognition.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but
I'll be glad to see FLYBY and BAD NEWS BEES at The Victory Tavern tonight celebrating
their bloodfeud victory over OSMOND QUINT. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers,
guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
There's got to be a better place in CHIMLEVTAL to get a drink than The Victory
Tavern! Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so
nice! So nyaaah! I see the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now-- Snide
Clemens

Jack Frost -- Thanks for not killing me. For a minute there I thought my manager

Sweetness -- It's ridiculous how good you are when you're just standing there. --

I am not purposelly killing off opponents. They're just suicidal--no body armor? I
understand he's a beggar, but still... -- Selune Staredge

The Catalyst -- I tend to prioritize wit and will, aiming for 17 on both, but 15 is
alright as well. If will is relatively high, I like bringing con up to at least 9,
preferably 11 (I think long term). So your 13-4-14-8-10-8-13 warrior I'd make into a
basher (using a morning star) with the following stats: 13-7-14-13-15-9-13, training
cone early and often. Disclaimer, I am a novice; so grain of salt et al. -- Lobo,
mgr Steal Wolves

Kilrogg Deadeye -- Congrats on your TV! -- Rosemary

Corwin -- Maybe lifting weights would allow you to hit harder? -- The Fool

Flyby -- Pretty good learning experience for both of us. A bit better for you,
though. -- Shrewd

Xandar -- Good luck with your new home on the Isle. That is, if retirement does not
claim you first. -- Dutiful

Honeycomb -- Bad match up to start with for you. And nothing learned, either. --
Black Rolf

Rondor Sendal -- You can claim it being whatever you want, but what was the cause for
our other two matches? Granted, you did win once. My manager almost murdered me
that night for the loss. -- Shrewd

All -- Is there a good listing of what weapons are faster for each style? Or even
what selections of bonuses in other areas such as parry or riposte? -- The Catalyst,
mgr. The Farseers

The Catalyst -- Well, you certainly have a dud with that four WL. If you can only
have one high stat, make it WL, because that will fix all the others in time--with a
four WL, you can just about forget training stats. But just as bad in the short run,
this guy is going to quit if his opponent sneers at him. He just doesn't have the
determination to keep on fighting. His endurance will be bad, too.
I grant you, if you have a roll-up with a three WL to begin with, you're not
going to make that higher than nine, but *DO* make it nine.
One problem new managers have is that their notions of what stats are important
may have been formed in standard role-playing games. This cannot be transfered
straight across to Duelmasters. First, because different stats are differently
important. And second because, unlike a human moderater, the computer is merciless.
Also, I have seen in some new managers a tendency to focus on one stat per
style. Aimed blows = Deftness. Total parries = Constitution. That sort of thing.
Alas, that is too easy; I wish it weren't! Every gladiator, whether we wish it or
not, is a whole person--weird concept, huh?
If you find yourself stuck with another gladiator who has a single digit will,
no matter what you can do, do NOT make him any style that has "parry" in the name.
You want a fast offensive style there, someone who can win before he gets bored and
quits. A basher, a lunger, a slasher, maybe a striker. -- Jorja

The Catalyst -- Regarding your suggested roll-up: 13-8-14-13-15-8-13, not an aimed
blow or a parry type, but anything else might work. -- Jorja
P.S. That's the thing about decent roll-ups, they're seldom good for just one style.
P.P.S. What skill I have is not from innate brains (I have those but don't use 'em
in dueling), it's from twenty-five years at the game.

Sweetness and Honeycomb... sounds delicious!

Lobo -- Ah, a trick question! Speaking only for myself, I can't seem to do "in depth
information" on a style, only on an individual example of the style. Back when I was
starting out, *my* default style was the slasher, and I ran them... badly. Or at
least not well, though I did graduate some of the early ones. And many others. My
general procedure, in which you might see some concepts you could use, was to run
them all initially with the same strategy, read the fights and then tweak them to get
better results. For instance, if I was running someone 10-10-x (and I ran a lot that
way in the beginning), and he got tired in the first minute, I said, "Ah, maybe I
should slow him down!" That sort of thing. -- Jorja
P.S. Oddly enough, my first graduate was a striker. I don't remember much about her
now, she retired from Primus years ago, but I do remember that her favorite weapon
turned out to be the hatchet, which I had never tried. Someone suggested I give her
a hatchet in either hand. She did quite well on the Isle with two hatchets.

Grom Hellscream -- I just couldn't stand the noise. -- Mandin Orwell

Heather -- Wow, a win! I think I love you! Marry me! -- Lumus Nelp

Raptor -- Ah, style advantages. Probably won't work for me a second time. -- Panda
Ross

I greatly dislike these Dangerous Criminals. I think we should get rid of them. --
Rondor Sendal

Skin A. Max -- What? -- Osmond Quint

                           AVOIDS, BLOODFEUDS, & CHALLENGES

                                       by Pagan

Ever wonder how the whole challenge/avoid thing works?
Who you fight depends on exactly how it works. We will never know exactly how it
works unless we can get a look at the coding for the program, but this is how I think
it works:

The Situation:
The system allows a warrior to make two separate challenges and two distinct
avoids.
Avoids are distinct in that they MUST indicate a specific team to be avoided, so
a "double avoid" indicates a single team twice, which by default means you are
avoiding one team. In this case, the second avoid is a duplicate and therefore a
waste of an avoid.
Challenges are to specific warriors. You have a first challenge, and then you
have a second challenge.

The Process:
First the computer removes all Dark Arena challengers from the list of available
warriors.
Second, the computer checks for WHO fights WHO by going though all TVs and
bloodfeuds, which are 100% sure to go through except in four instances:
     1. the warrior challenged does not fight,
     2. the warrior challenged is also making a bloodfeud or TV challenge and that
challenge has already been assigned,
     3. the warrior has already been assigned to a Dark Arena fight,
     4. that warrior has declared your team to be one of his warrior's avoids,
reducing your challenge to 50%.
Third, the computer assesses all the regular first-challenge warriors and assigns
fights. All other challenges are at 100% chance of success except in a few instances:
warrior challenged is going to the DA, warrior challenged is involved in a previously
assigned challenge, warrior challenged is not running this turn, or warrior challenged
has avoided your team at 50% chance to avoid.
Fourth, the computer assesses and assigns all secondary challenges of warriors
not so far assigned for bloodfeuds and TVs.
Fifth, the computer assesses and assigns all the regular second challenges.
Sixth, the computer assigns random matchups in each available class starting with
the highest class first.
Seventh, the computer finds the remaining warriors that have successfully avoided
all first and second challenges and/or who also did not get randomly assigned, AND for
whom no more available warriors remain in their class for random pairing. All of
these warriors get RSI-generated warriors to fight based on their class.
So, if I'm right and avoids reduce the chance for a challenge to 50%, then:
In the absence of an avoid
          single challenge = 100% success
double challenge = 100% success, then an additional 100% success
     Where an avoid is involved
single challenge vs avoid = 50% success
          double challenge vs avoid = 75% (chance to avoid is 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25; 1 -
0.25 = 75% chance to succeed

Bloodfeuds and TVs may increase the percentage chance of success above 100%, or
they may not. I feel that their increased ability to get through is based solely on
the way the computer assigns challenges. They are first, so they are most likely to
go through. The 100% chance for a challenge to succeed is 100% if it's a TV bloodfeud
and you are the first one to get assigned a fight that day because you are also the
Duelmaster. But after that the chances start to diminish rapidly.
The run-through for second challenges theoretically means your challenge should
be 100% but it's not the case if you are the LAST guy the computer goes to for finding
challenges.
If you don't double challenge, you significantly lower your chance to get your
challenge through. The second challenge is not equal to the first challenge.
