DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
I am a little sad to have skipped my Adepts tournament to show The Inaudible
that we do not like people killing our warriors, but it is probably for the best.
While I am good at beating strikers, more than likely the strikers I would face in a
tournament are much better than The Inaudible. Not that he is bad. Just that he is
the wrong type of warrior to face me.
Cobol is not my favorite matchup, but I will trust what got me here... High
skills. We'll see if he tries anything fancy against me. Maybe I can try to use
that nifty decise rating I just got against him.
-- Mr. Freeze
SPY REPORT
After last turn's complete mess up, I'm still in a bad mood. Yeah, it was my
fault. I'm the one who mixed up the paperwork and resubmitted the prior turn's
report. Two hours of work effectively flushed down the toilet.
So this turn, you get what you get. In fact, I think I'll only report on one
team's exploits. Welcome to the spy report all about AVENGERS. Before the fights
began, the bookies quickly noticed that AVENGERS were challenged three times and one
of their matchups was against the cool Duelmaster Mr. Freeze. As you would expect,
these criminals, I mean bookies, started setting the odds up.
In the first challenge, ARNAGE went after RYO, almost certainly looking for some
big skills and hopefully an easy win against the sub-.500 RYO. Well this time
experience won out and RYO won in two! The bookies really don't care, because they
get their cut either way.
In the second challenge, QUEEN OF THE NORTH came after ODACHI. The style
matchup this time wasn't clearly in the challenger's favor, but the outcome was. As
consolation for 5 minutes of showmanship, ODACHI was the most popular warrior for the
turn.
In my absolute favorite fight of the cycle, MAPLE LEIF downchallenged ADIOS
AMIGO. Before the fight even began, the crowd started to chant for a kill. And they
were not disappointed. ADIOS AMIGO kills the downchallenger for #3. Whether fate,
luck, or simply the commission enjoying the name of this warrior, that gives ADIOS 3
kills in 4 wins. Spectacular job. Keep it up and you'll have a permanent place in
this column!
In the title fight, MR. FREEZE found every exposed bit of skin (as well as some
unexposed places) quickly and ISHIBO quickly cried out in surrender, simply to get
back to the warmth of the locker rooms.
Finally, the young WET NOODLE was simply overmatched by the veteran SOJUTSU.
All total, AVENGERS had a 3-2-1 turn and 1 award. Not a single team avoided
them this time out. They issued four of their own avoids, THE CANUCKS being the most
avoided team with half of the AVENGERS' avoids.

JASPER GULCH: DM 85
Zeb Karan around the big table. Arena staff of all ranks and titles sat and
stared at each other: arenamasters, standbys, Dark Arena warriors, stewards and
infirmarians, even the maintenance crew. This was not the first time they'd met like
this, and it probably wouldn't be the last.
"So this is it again, is it?" Lew Voth asked. "Less than seven years since they
closed Dwes Eg to new teams, and now they're closing Blackstone?"
"Only to new teams," one of the spymasters pointed out. "And it's necessary.
There are several file rooms we haven't been able to enter in months because they're
too full of team records."
"Nothing you couldn't fix with a lighted match," Jame Rinvar suggested.
Technically he should not have been there, since he'd taken over full time as the
arenamaster of Shadowspire. But no one wanted to tell him to leave.
"We may NEED those records one of these days," Chief Steward Hesselrod protested.
"We can't burn RECORDS."
"I could," Rinvar said.
"But you won't." Voth pinned him with a stare. "Don't stir up trouble for its
own sake, Jame."
Rinvar raised his hand in a gesture of surrender. "I'll be good, Lew."
"When are they shutting down Blackstone?"
"To new teams only, remember--the old ones will keep fighting if their managers
want to pay the fees. This week. Maybe next week. Hard to be sure, when you travel
from Alastari to anywhere else, there's a time distortion effect. But probably this
week. Same operating rules as Dwes Eg (82): no new teams in, but the old ones can
recruit new members. New teams will go to the new place--" Zeb Karan cast a look of
enquiry around the room.
"Jasper Gulch," a steward said.
"Right. New teams will go to Jasper Gulch. I'm not sure the day for it, probably
'opposite' Blackstone in the schedule. A regular two-week cycle. Teams can be
transfered in from regular arenas, I suppose, but not OUT."
Voth nodded. "We can work with this."
"Beats not working."
