                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

It's been a wild, wild ride to get here. Today may be my final fight in Chimlevtal.
After today, I will be prepped for a Champions tourney. Assur hasn't said when I'll
be fighting, but it won't be in April. He is very, very pleased with my performances
far and hopes I have another strong one (or perhaps even two) left in me.

I will say that being dead for over a year was an experience I'd rather not repeat.
So I'll let Assur dictate how long my career goes, and then I'll happily drift off
into the sunset and retirement! (You don't ride off into the ocean.)

                                          -- Tar

                                      SPY REPORT

First the facts. I wonder if anyone really cares about these. But they give me
hours and make the Commission think I'm doing something of value! 43 warriors fought
for 10 teams. 3 of those were sent to the Dark Arena, but the rest fought in 23
fights. All ten styles were represented in a fairly even distribution (given how
these things work). The awards were also split more fairly than often is the case,
with 6 teams getting the 9 awards and no team pulled more than 2 awards. NUMBERS GAME
had the best turn of the cycle, going 4-1, while OTTOBAHN completely missed the
starting gun in 4 fights. The most avoided team was OTTOBAHN (perhaps that
contributed to their poor race?), receiving 7 of the 36 avoids; USEFUL WEAPONS and
BASH BROS OCEAN both issued 2 avoids to OTTOBAHN. The most challenged warrior was
RYO.
Phew! See all that hard work I did?!? I definitely deserve a reward! But
before that, I should tell you about some fights. Since Smithy and Assur (and their
warriors) were the only ones who cared enough to write in our newsletter this turn
with ads and a dm column, I will highlight all their fights.
First and foremost, these two stables had one fight against each other. WAVES TOO
BIG faced off against CANDLESTICK. And clearly those waves were too big earlier,
because the fight was over all too quick. Or maybe it had something to do with style
advantages. Either way, CANDLESTICK won.
Next up was Assur's only win, but it was a big one. TAR beat HUAYRA in another
quick fight. I guess strikers normally have quick fights. TAR remains the
Duelmaster, but according to Assur, will relinquish the throne next turn.
The next weapon in line was the SLING SHOT. It was given a tough job, facing a
15 fight warrior with 3 kills. Not surprisingly, SLING SHOT lost to ADIOS AMIGO, but
will fight again another day.
Back on the ocean front, BROKEN GLASS was no match for FORINPOLITIX. The deal
here? Everyone knows that good politicians know how to avoid messy situations,
whether they be broken glass or otherwise.
What happens when a POOL CUE faces an 800 number? Maybe on a Friday night the
POOL CUE is more popular. Otherwise, follow the money as 1-800-VICTORY won the day.
The old SHARK was challenged by ODACHI. I didn't see the fight, but it sounded
like a good one. ODACHI won in 2.
And that dangerous UMBRELLA was the final fight for Smithy. The UMBRELLA
challenged WINEANDSPIRIX. We all know that liquids do not phase an UMBRELLA!
Last and least was a new recruit sent to the BOTTOM OF THE SEA.
My reward?!? I think I'll hit the town tonight! Until next time: Sharpen those
blades! Look for those abusive down challenges! Most importantly, kill each other
off!

Poor seagull. Poor little birdie. He had a mean manager, for sure. What Assur did was
just disgusting; he knew the bird wouldn't survive the D.A. Seagull may have been a
crappy little bird, but Assur should have been a good keeper, you know? Bad, bad
Assur. -- Lady Smith, Useful Weapons

Tar be champeen?! Tarnation! -- Smithy, Useful Weapons

Avengers, we salute you for your great warrior and now Lord Protector, Ryo. Kudos. --
Lady Smith and The Useful Weapons

Pumpkin Roll, sorry, pal, for offing you in the FTF. Perhaps that would have been a
better game for you -- SORRY. Personally, I like CLUE. You know ... Consortium in the
Dining Room with the Candestick............ -- Candlestick, Useful Weapons

Assur, your jealousy for Candlestick and his two tournament kills is silly. You had
your own quota in the Rookies, I'll bet. Anyway, quit "coveting thy neighbor's wife".
(wink) -- Lady Smith (caregiver of Smithy)

Fhtaghn, at least I didn't devour you like I did Pumpkin Roll. Bwahahaha. --
Candlestick

Wineandspirix, billiards is more of a beer and cigarette game, you know? You didn't
have a chance. -- Pool Cue, Useful Weapons

Persistent Beggar, a pebble to the nose is like a spike to the chest, know what I
mean? -- Sling Shot, Useful Weapons

1-800-Victory, why toss off your umbrella when it is raining blood and sweat? Huh? Bad
stuff, you cretin! -- Umbrella, Useful Weapons

Broken Glass, I guess Whip Wilson or Lash Larue would have gotten through the broken
glass in their cowboy boots, but I was barefoot, dangnabit! -- Whip, Useful Weapons

All, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, unless the bird is an Assur seagull.
-- Lady Smith

LG -- I consider these challenges payback, though you started this mess by killing one
of my favorites! I now owe you! -- Assur
P.S. Pulling a shark onto the sands is cruel, cruel, cruel!

Whip -- Whips don't do much to me. In fact, at best I'd expect you only to make more
of me. Either way, you lose, I win -- Broken Glass

Ishibo -- Well fought. That was a close one! -- Waves Too Big

                                NAME CHANGE-O-RAMA

The crowd was surprisingly orderly, but it was still a crowd, and the Commission
clerk, Algernon, looked at it uneasily. Whenever this many people came together to
petition for something, it meant trouble. For him, anyway. Records to be altered.
Altering records was Bad. It made Extra Work.
His assistant clerk leaned close and whispered, "If it weren't for gladiators, we
wouldn't have jobs. Smile at them and ask what they want."
Algernon closed his eyes briefly. Looking at this crowd made him dizzy. They
were all wearing black and white stripes. Like a herd of zebras, except that zebras
didn't carry swords. Then he took a deep breath and managed a smile. "What... ah,
what can I do for you?"
"We want new names," the first gladiator said. There was a number on the front
of his shirt: 0381. He thumped the number with his thumb. "This here isn't a
name--"
"We want REAL names!" That voice came from farther back in the crowd.
"Yeah! We've paid our dues," another shouted, "and we've EARNED real names!"
One from the very back yelled, "I want to be called Tom."
All the others turned to look at him.
Algernon couldn't see him, but apparently those looks were accusing. Well, he
could understand that, "Tom" was such a... common name.
"My mom called me Tom," the voice in the back protested. "It's a good name."
"It isn't the name you put on the petition," 0381 said. "We talked about this.
We got our manager's agreement. You get the name on the petition."
     "But--!"
Algernon didn't really want to keep staring at all these stripes while they
argued. He picked up the petition. "These names are the ones you want?"
     0381 turned back. "Yes."
"It's a lot of trouble, and when other people see that YOU are getting name
changes, THEY are going to want them--" Seeing the gladiators beginning to frown...
and finger their weapons, he went on quickly, "So I figure we might as well make it a
complete deal. A Name-Change-O-Rama. Everyone who wants a name change can petition
for it. Get it all over with at once." He glanced at the petition, shuddered
slightly, and passed it to his clerk. "We'll announce it, proclaim it, even, and you
will get the names on this petition. And others will get the names THEY think they
should have had, too." He paused. "And I think I'll get a new name, I'm tired of
being an Algernon...."
