TEAM SPOTLIGHT
She had been taught many things in her short career. She had been taught that, when
possible, strike first and strike hard. One thing she had observed early in life is
that the universe tends to offer solutions in threes. Up, down, sideways. Liquid,
solid, gas. Noble had taught her many things also, though his efforts focused on her
fighting ability. Since she and her two brethren came to Noble's camp, all three were
hailed as potential future stars. She was destined to be among the best, but she was
always convinced that with his sage help, she could become a champion, and not JUST in
Chimlevtal, though that was of course a career goal.
Her recent fight with Salt Water taught her a new lesson. The lesson was that
sometimes you have to rely on defense option #4. Though she broke her longsword
parrying one of Salt Water's shots in minute one, she was able to immediately pull her
shortsword and really toy with the more experienced arena warrior for the next few
minutes, especially after breaking his scimitar in round 2 causing him to pull a back-
up dagger. At that point, the showboating side of Brookie came out. After all, a win
was certain at that point, right?
It was after minute 5 started that defense #4 had to kick in. Salt Water, who was
obviously exhausted by that point, ripped his dagger past Brookie's parry and jabbed a
hole through her plate bringing out some of her blood along with the blade when he
recoiled. Though she knew instinctively she should go into counterstrike mode, she
just stood there, jaw agape. Her undefeated streak in Chimlevtal...her championship
potential...her potential as a legend, all were teetering on the edge and she was
unable to move, eyes glazing over. After what seemed like an eternity, her thought
process cleared, and she ran through the hierarchy of three defensive actions to take
when in trouble: 1. Dodge 2. Parry 3. Rely on the armor! After realizing that the
tank was empty and none of those three solutions were the answer, she looked up to see
the final blow hoping to at least maybe learn something in defeat...then she saw
something amazing...
Salt Water had taken a step back, and was barely standing, hunched over, unable to
catch his breath. The backup dagger, her blood still dripping from the blade, barely
stayed attached to his loosely gripping fingers. His eyes were cast downward, not
focused at all on his opponent who still somehow stood in front of him. Though the
crowd was loud, she didn't hear them. That's when the 4th defense manifested itself
in her sword arm. Willpower.
Though it wasn't a particularly powerful blow, it caught Salt with just enough of the
blade to make him finally tap out. Time sped back up, and the crowd noise slowly
became real to her again, and she heard the fans giving the traditional, "You just got
your Just Desserts!" chant at Salt Water as he limped off the sands. Relief washed
over her as Snarkey rushed out to help her off the sands and to the medics.
"You got a bit lucky that time, Brookie," Snarkey dryly noted. Though he was sharp-
tongued in public, the squad knew him as the one who provided calm support and
encouragement.
"I never had a doubt!" he exclaimed as he smiled down at her. "I've seen you get out
of tougher situations in practice." he laughed.
She didn't respond, but focused on staying upright as she leaned heavily on him as
they closed in on the medic's tent. Though she escaped today, she knew tougher battles
lay ahead. One more fight in Chimlevtal, then she would enter the next tournament,
with an eye on having two or less losses at the end of it and achieving another
milestone. After that...the throne of Chimlevtal! Going forward in her career, she
knew that her "4th defense" would be needed again to achieve her goals in the arena.

Good fight with Pi! He even managed to land a counterstrike during my assault.
Good to bring the title of the throne back to Assassin Nation! While Rouge and
Ravaged had it for a while, the last Assassin was back on turn 369 with Malice.
My challenges go to the two warriors whose style matchup is best for me. You know who you are. With any luck, I'll be here next turn as well.

SPY REPORT
After the last couple of nice tourneys, I was truly hoping Chimlevtal had turned a
corner. But alas, the only evidence I noticed from the tourney were two kills in
rookies, presumably by Crip & One Armed Bandit warriors. MAJOR TOM killed on round 5
and IOTA CHAMAELEONTI killed on round 2. If I got IOTA's manager wrong, I blame it on
the manager who named their warrior like one would name a CHAMAELEON warrior. Much
better to have killers than killed, but I want to see Chimlevtal shine in the
runoffs!!! Perhaps Destitute Noble can represent us in the summer tournament! He
certainly has some hopes for it!
Two managers did shine this turn, Destitute Noble and Assur. JUST DESSERTS won 4
and captured the current top team award. BASH BROS OCEAN won 5 and captured three
other awards. Well done. Surprisingly, only BOOK OF THOMAS was winless (fighting 3
in their return - welcome back). So the rest of those nine losses were spread out
evenly. BASH BROS OCEAN won those fights being the most avoided team, receiving a
massive 10 of the 40 avoids. JUST DESSERTS, AVENGERS, CARTOON NETWORK, and USEFUL
WEAPONS received 5-7 as well. USEFUL WEAPONS avoided BASH BROS OCEAN the most.
Meanwhile, JUST DESSERTS won 4 fights in spite of receiving 3 challenges. The loss
was a small down challenge from HATRED to CHAFFY TAFFY, whose undefeated streak is
ended at 6.
FLOYD'S BOOKIE showed why having a TV challenge is better than not having one.
SGT. ROCK was the most challenged warrior. Of course, FLOYD'S BOOKIE's challenge was
processed first, so FLOYD'S BOOKIE continued his undefeated streak into the challenger
champion class at 5-0. And in my column, you get the name I give you! Though I do
find it entertaining that I have completely ignored a letter in your name for your
entire time here. Maybe when you stop getting the 'r' from winner, I'll consider
giving you one somewhere else.
For the title fight, CONTEMPT matched with FOURTH SHOT. While I would expect a 1
minute one-sided contest from this matchup, if you had told me that it had happened, I
would have picked the wrong winner. Congratulations, FOURTH SHOT, for surprising me,
earning the throne, and gaining the title of Lord Protector. Your mission is to write
a DM Column! Fortunately, the After Midnight crew is one of the more consistent
contributors to our newsletter.
Agent R's crew also returned to the sands and easily engaged in my favorite fight
of the cycle. OLIVER WOOD easily killed CHAIN SAW in a 1 minute brutal one-sided
contest. Ladies shouldn't run power tools! They're likely to hurt themselves! Well
done, OLIVER, and thank you for brightening my day with a kill and even better a kill
of a USEFUL WEAPON warrior.
