DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Not surprisingly, being a lava golem, the first thing I remember is being
bitterly cold. As my body formed it had to be extracted from the lava and was my first
experience with the world outside the molten warmth I had always known. Under normal
circumstances I would've immediately been sent to the Molten Plane for basic
functionality training to control my body in servitude to whatever magician would
ultimately control me. That future was not meant for me apparently. You see, I was
born what is affectionately known a runt amongst my kind".
A standard golem of my type stands in excess of 10 feet and burns any flammable
within a 6 foot radius. As you can plainly see, I am nowhere near that size, and those
of you that have been close to me know that my body temp is roughly that of a typical
humanoid. Runts of my ilk still have many uses, and unlike many other golems that are
formed with less than perfect magic, those of us that I refer to as lava cake golems"
have a future even if we aren't perfect specimens. Most other golem subtypes (Earth,
Wind, Mud, etc.) that are substandard--to use the common term--get DA'd immediately.
Three of us were born that day as runts, while two were truly fearsome examples
of what lava golems can be. The magician who must have bitten off more than he could
chew in casting the spell summoning us. Through my shivering body, I saw him lay on a
heap at the edge of the volcano after he summoned us obviously completely drained from
the experience. To the fortune of the townfolk nearby, a much more skilled magician
had learned of the plan of the lesser mage, and secreted himself away to be nearby as
the spell was cast and reap the harvest without suffering the consequences. If the
casting mage survived that day, I doubt he made that mistake again, if he still had
the stomach for magic.
The magician who spirited all five away sold the three runts to who ultimately
became my manager, Destitute Noble. Noble, who did not know the magician only had
partial control over us due to him not being the summoning entity, had purchased the
three of us with the intent of one being a warrior, and the other two being used to
pay off some other debts. My two kin ultimately became head guard for one of the
wealthier merchants around, and the other heads security for the busiest trading
market in the West.
I was to be an aimed blow in Noble's mind, but my "wild streak" allowed me to act
as a typical son does, and I instead chose to be a total parry. As is often the case
in life, the son realizes now that the parent (Noble in this case) was correct, and my
career may have been a bit more of a success had I chosen the route he had envisioned
for me, but all in all I think I've had a great run! Being the holder of throne in
Chimlevtal is a nice accomplishment. If one listened to Belinda, they would disavow my
whole duelmastership though because I challenged a warrior 3 points below me to gain
it. No mention that I'm a defensive warrior challenging what many would see as a
superior style and I didn't get touched. No mention that his squad is the second
highest in the arena -- a spot that we'd like for ourselves. Nah--Evilify instead with
no perspective, no mention of my 15 point up-challenge last turn. Sounds like the
media sure enough.
I'm down to fight any of the challenger champions next turn to defend the throne.
Obviously Brass Knuckles would likely be the most challenging warrior amongst them. I
am 1-2 against him in our fine arena, losing the last two after fending off his
challenge way back when we were both 3-0. I've heard he still has nightmares about
that fight--and screams out in the night at times. I'm sure Lady Smith was quite a
comfort to him, but now she is no more. Sad... almost.
No matter what happens throughout the duration of my career, our squad has a
bright future. On turn 456 we were an even 122-122-6. We are 53-39 since and have had
3 duelmasters including myself. I see Lemon Barrio definitely ascending to the throne
one day--the other 3 have tougher roads but may ultimately end up where I am today. I
appreciate my fellow warriors and the crowd participating in my career! It has been a
pleasure to be here to entertain you and look forward to doing so until they kick me
outta here.

SPY REPORT
LAVA CAKE GOLEM is no slouch! TP vs TP, 8 minutes, with LAVA CAKE GOLEM keeping
the throne in an impressive beat down of SGT. ROCK (who is just a pure scum, not long
ago winning a 43 minute fight). And for those wondering what exactly a LAVA CAKE
GOLEM is, I recommend reading the DM column. More importantly, there are hints of
what to do and not do in order to beat LCG (don't bring wooden weapons, first and
foremost). Lava Cake Golem will be fighting for immortality next turn and there is
only one warrior in the challenger champs that looks to have a chance to upset those
plans, though it might not be a good chance.
That warrior? CAPTAIN KANGEROO. The last time C.K. fought on the sands here was
just short of 20 years ago on turn 228. At that time, Ghab, Crip, and Destitute Noble
were active. C.K. then met with an unfortuate accident trying to fight in the summer
champions tournament. But CAPTAIN KANGEROO fought back from the dead. By my
calculations, CAPTAIN KANGEROO seems likely to disappear in between turns again. This
time, however, it'll be immortality instead of death that makes the KANGEROO
disappear. Time will tell. LAVA CAKE GOLEM is good though and has a non-zero chance
of upsetting the KANGEROO, should the fight happen.
On the team news, I will recognize two 2-0 teams. This is a little out of the
norm, but it seems appropriate to do things just slightly differently this turn.
First. BIRDS! They took two challenges, which makes 2-0 look quite a bit better.
TOUCAN beat the impressive CAPT. AMERICA and is on the cusp of reaching the challenger
champs. SEAGULL, meanwhile, beat the very unimpressive HAOMARU, but will take any win
to the bank.
The other 2-0 to note is OAB's CHAMAELEON team. That gives him two 5-0 warriors.
I suspect one or both of them are prepping for Adepts, but 5-0 is 5-0 regardless of
how you get there.
No deaths on the sands, but there were 3 avenged deaths...
SOL DAEMON bested DUMBBELL in a 2 minute Bloodfeud duel.
MAJOR SNAFU subdued CONFUSED in a 6 minute Bloodfeud melee.
LEMON BARRIO viciously subdued LITTLE JANE in a crowd pleasing 1 minute gory brawl.
That last was a matchup, even. Well done! Show those warriors that killing will
not be tolerated! But if you really want to send a message... Take an eye for an
eye!
There were two down challenges, both successful. Both by AVENGERS. DODGE'EM DUDE
sent BRASS KNUCKLES back into the champs (Smithy getting a taste of his own DCing
medicine). OCTOPUS, meanwhile, ended an undefeated start by down challenging ABBA-
ZABA. Nicely done!
One last fight to mention and then I'll get to the boring numbers stuff. Our most
popular warrior this turn was the 4-4 over ranked VILENESS beating the under ranked
SUNKIST in a 6 minute thrashing. An impressive win. The best part?!? It sets up the
potential for a nasty DC rematch! To prove to me that it wasn't a fluke, of course...
By the numbers... 38 warriors represented all ten styles in 20 matches (1 DA, 2
BF's, 9 challenges, and 8 matchups). 12 teams in total. 18 warriors sent 30 avoids,
with USEFUL WEAPONS being the most avoided (edging out ASSASSIN NATION). Technically,
JUST DESSERTS led the avoiding, but 5 separate teams sent avoids. The awards were
mostly spread out, but MILITARY MAYHEM (or should I say CAPTAIN KANGEROO) won two
recognition awards. JUST DESSERTS took the two most desired awards, Current Top Team
and Duelmaster.
