                             Notes from the arena champ.

I must say that the view from up here is awfully nice. I successfully defended my
title this turn against Obsidian Golem. I knew that I have a decided advantage
against him and I did everything to exploit it. About 5 swings later the fight was
over and I was victorious. Sorry about the Target practice O.G. It's nothing
personal.

This turn I'll be challenging Lil Eth. I'm 2-1 against Tad in my career and I'm 1-0
against Lil. I really have no desire to fight Dieter any time soon. I think that
Dieter is just a bad match up for me. He has much more experience than I do and I
think he is starting to peak at the right time. I don't want to end up like Pretty
Wild did.

As of right now I only need to go .500 over my next 4 turns and I will receive my
invite. With some luck that will happen. Well, I'm off to practice. I hope to see
you all here again next week.

Your Duelmaster,

Savory

                                      SPY REPORT

The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon ARVAT, for I,
Novgorodny Vir, have returned! Good things come to those who fight well, as FLAMING
DEATH can attest, moving up by 1. THE STORMLORDS had cause to celebrate, after THOR
got 14 points by beating STRATOSTAR. STRATOSTAR certainly had a baffled expression
on his face, after losing to THOR and losing 11 points in the process! Duelmaster
SAVORY from SARATOGA GLORY is going for the gold, as he challenged DEVIL ADVOCATES'
LIL ETH. Ooh, the excitement! Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were
disappointed by LIL ETH, of DEVIL ADVOCATES, who despite a 23-9-2 couldn't overcome
ARVAT's Number 1. So who was the warrior seen charging into immovable walls and
challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem...
And how sociable are ARVAT's warriors? Come, let us see. Like the noble eagle
soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of DEVIL ADVOCATES, alone and
unchallenged. The warriors of DEVIL ADVOCATES found their efforts at combat
frustrated as FISHERMAN'S WHARF apparently had more important things to do than
fight. If challenges were horses, TASSALTER could open up a fast food joint! As a
confidence booster, TAD DEVILLE challenged TASSALTER, down 16 points. Do you also
slay vicious rodents in your spare time, TAD DEVILLE? TAD DEVILLE overcame
TASSALTER. The whole thing leaves a bitter memory.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Oh hard! that to
strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
Leave me now, you base fools! More important duties call me. ARVAT, I leave
you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Warty Toad. 'Til next
time-- Novgorodny Vir

All -- Darn! I wrote a nubmer of personals and a DM column last turn. Looks like
gremlins ate them! -- the Dark One

     They were hungry.

Arvat -- Only eight turns to 500! All hail Arvat! -- Devil Advocates

Savory -- Ouch! I knew Obsidian Golem had no chance. Well struck. -- The Icelord

Stratostar -- I should have learned at least 1 skill. I'll have to hit the books. --
Thor

the Dark One -- Well met indeed, mighty one. I hope I can help liven up Arvat while
I'm here. It would be great to see Caesar return. I would like to see him return to
Chimlevtal also. We would like to put him into the Chimlevtal Hall of Fame, but he
is just shy of 100 victories. Strong steel. -- The Icelord

Arvat -- Good luck at the April tournament! -- The Stormlords

Obsidian Golem -- Don't you find it extremely unfortunate when your plans all go to
crap? Thanks for the fight at least. -- Savory

Loggerhead -- I have to say that I am amazed that I pulled that one out. Thanks for
the skills. Hopefully I will now be ready to do something in the Apprentices
tournament. I'm taking this turn off for training purposes but I'll be back shortly
to give you another shot. -- Silver Train

Charon -- I knew it would end badly for me if I matched with you. Good job kicking
my tail. -- Dynamite Flyer

Thor -- Well, it's been fun fighting you and only you for these past few turns but I
have to say that I hope we don't see each other again this coming turn. Don't get me
wrong, I enjoy learning all of the skills, I'd just like someone new to play with for
a change. -- Stratostar

Dahlgren -- I certainly hope that you are going to be man enough to stand up to the
Bloodfued that the Stormlords owe you. At least give some kind of an explanation.
That would be awfully shady of you if you were just not running to avoid some
punishment. -- the Trainer

the Icelord -- Well, I just sent in a new team to play with in Chimlevtal. Provided
they come back looking decent I'll be there. -- the Trainer

the Dark Onev -- I guess wonders will never cease! Ads and a DM column (albeit
tardy)!!! Kudos to you my man. Keep it up. Let's at least make this arena an arena
to have fun in again. -- the Trainer

the Stormlords -- Congratulations on your 100th Victory. May you have 100 more in
Arvat. -- the Trainer

Izusu Trooper -- No doubt just popping in for a few turns to set up properly for an
Initiates or Adepts tourney. Nonetheless welcome back. Tell the Studly one to watch
his back though. We are gunning for him. -- the Trainer

Jorja --I understand about the lack of personals in some arenas. I am doing my best
to liven things up here though. Hopefully, if we can get some more good managers
like the Icelord running back here again and being vocal we can draw some more
managers that want to enjoy all aspects of this game again. At least that is my
plan. Hope the tooth is feeling better. -- the Trainer

Dieter Kwan -- Samne old thing, again. If I can figure out how to withhold skills,
will you find some other poor dupe to challenge? -- Baskervole the not-thrilled

Tad Deville -- For such a little tad, you've got a really mean nature. -- Tassalter

Argonaut -- By the gods, an up-challenge! I am all aflutter over it. -- Boatman Ku
P.S. I don't mind losing to another sailor.
P.P.S. Well, okay, I mind, but not as much.

Silver Train -- Ah, I knew in a flash that you were sinister! The left-handedness,
and then you're so short. (heavy sigh) Sometimes life is hard. But at least I
didn't die. I have this feeling that death would be even harder. -- Loggerhead

Sensoo O Suru -- Nothing beats pacing yourself, does it? Sure, you lost, and the
announcer put you in the losing position with every minute, but what does he know,
eh? There's this powerful bias against your style, and I find it totally
unjustified. Lady Greywand must have had her reasons. -- Little Rainbow

The Icelord -- At this moment, Arvat looks quite healthy, but until very recently, it
did not. I don't >think< more arena closings are in the immediate future, but who
can say? There are some arenas that regularly sit out turns because nobody but me is
active there; those arenas are at risk of closing. I would guess that any arena that
consistently has at least six active teams will be "safe." And THAT is a sad comment
on dueling--when I first started playing, the idea of any arena would get so small
would have been laughed out of the room. By and large, the Free Blades arenas fare
better than either Andorian or Delarquan arenas, but Arvat and Jurine are weak
points, likewise Zukal. Of course, arenas all over Alastari have picked up at the
moment, but that could be tourney-prep. -- Jorja
P.S. Congratulations on having one hundred victories here in Arvat.

The Trainer -- They aren't worth graduating, most of them. The mini-overs are always
a bit of a shock, as I tend to forget what I've got here. Hmm, actually, some of
them aren't all that bad. But with no personal management, they will continue to be
easy meat for those warriors who choose to hunt easy wins. -- Jorja
P.S. Yes, I know, I just finished an argument about this in some Andorian arenas.
"If you'd pay more attention to the way your warriors run, dirty, low-down down-
challengers wouldn't be able to take advantage of them." Sorry, but the "paying more
attention" is not going to happen any time soon. Hmm. I could have everybody avoid
Devil Advocates, that would certainly make a change....

1 March 2005
                                    The Contract
[as retold by Hammer the WordSmith]
What had begun as a contract for swords and armor between a well known name in
the DM community and the former VC Captain/WordSmith and WeaponSmith of the Vendetta
Cartel Tarantula Tribe was destined to impact and altar the landscape of the dueling
community for years to come.
The following is but a condensed retelling of history in the making.

Hammer continued sipping his tankard of Elven Tonic as the mysterious hooded
figure quietly seated himself across the table from the Veteran Manager whose back
was against the wall; allowing for a subtle, but effective surveillance of the dimly
lit tavern.
Recent events in both Illis and North Fork/SCOMSS Swamp Arena had stunned the DM
managerial world with the announcement that Hammer had resigned from his position as
a well respected member of the Vendetta Cartel Alliance.
Those managers and associates closest to Hammer were shocked and dismayed that
there seemed to be NO Rational Explanation for Hammer making such a seemingly
irrational, hasty and extremely illogical decision; by what seemed to be a spur of
the moment reaction following the Declaration of War by Hammer in the DM 47 P-ads.
This is what stirred the mysterious hooded figure to seek Hammer with a request
that would change the managerial course of both men; ultimately Rocking the
Managerial World of Alastari as a result of the forthcoming decisions reached by the
two Veterans.
Time passed swiftly as both Veteran Managers discussed how the landscape of the
DM game on the sands of Alastari had changed over the years both in Basic and Tourney
play; producing a new breed of managers who would of necessity band together in an
alliance with a common goal; waging war against antagonists while improving the
managerial skills of each participating member in their glorious quest for DM
excellence.
Hammer listened intently as his unexpected guest inquired about the situation in
North Fork/SCOMSS Swamp Arena; revealing his desire to participate in the upcoming
Turf War 4 contest in DM 47 with an alliance that would accept him on a more
permanent basis other than for just fighting together as a TW4 alliance to win fame
and Gift Certs.
Here was a Veteran Manager, seeking the advice of Hammer regarding an alliance
to join on a permanent basis; plus extending a sword arm of friendship and requesting
that Hammer join him as an alliance mate with those who would welcome their
membership.
The Iron in the Words of Hammer had produced this opportunity as a result of the
recent conflicts witnessed first hand by the manager seated across the table from
Hammer. This Veteran Manager had been secretly searching and scouting around
Alastari for someone worth his mettle to fight alongside; someone who would know
where to find the perfect gang of rebels who were unafraid of waging war against
anyone.
Hammer knew exactly where to look and in a matter of days the two newcomers were
welcomed into the ranks of a group of managers who received them as war waging equals
in an alliance that had joined a Confederation of Alliances for the TW4 contest.
Fighting under the banner of The Illuminati Confederation of Alliances alongside
members of Chaos Inc, kLk and The Company of Brothers during the TW4 was more than
either of the two Veteran Managers had envisioned a few months ago.
Hammer was now entering a new journey with a new attitude.
Perhaps you readers may have noticed that new attitude by now since this
announcement by Hammer is uncharacteristically Exclamation Point Free.
Except for the famous quote by Hammer at the end of this announcement.
Now that Hammer and the Mysterious Hooded Figure have agreed to join forces with
an alliance whose members have welcomed them enthusiastically; let those who desire
to be antagonistic be forewarned as to the identities of these newly welcomed wagers
of war:
