It was a rather nice debut, starting out at 3-2-1. Since that day we have really turned it on in going 108-50-10 in our first fourty-one turns. I can honestly say I never expected to have been this successful after all of this time. It has been an honor and a privilege to have fought amongst the greatest managers that Alastari has ever seen. Thank you all for listening, the Trainer * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * The Dark One sat in the shadows of his expansive guildhouse in the dreary city of Arvat, pondering the future. This house had served his needs well, both as the home for his dozens of gladiators from the city and as a distribution point for the vast quantities of gold that his minions had extracted from the Seven Sister Mines in the nearby hills. Both the famous Devil Advocates dueling stable and the legendary mines had made him fabulously wealthy and also provided a front over the years for his wizardly studies. All in all, it had been a remarkable run of success--to the point of saving the world several times, first during the bizarre rupture of reality which created an alternate universe and threatened to destroy all of existence and then again when he sealed the chaos rift which had formed in Alastari. True, those episodes had taken place many years past, but both had been both taxing and most entertaining. The question which he pondered now was where the future would take him? Over the passing of years--he had first arrived in Arvat seventeen years ago--much had changed. Looking out the lead glass window of his study, he gazed upon the long abandoned Temple of Caesar, dredged up from the swamp by his sometime enemy, sometime friend and left to crumble, untended. Just down the street was the empty Road Warriors guildhouse, vacant and unused. And even more great guildhouses had been torn down or converted into street front shops--The Philosophers, Legend of Steel, the Rat Pak, Odonimus' Guard, Notorious, Wiccan Lords, Farfignewtons, Legends of Troy, Team Banzai, Wooden Heads, a Tad Mundane, Venom, Cosmic Thang, the Cleavers, Road Kill, Psychotic Supper, Club Heads, Harbingers, Storm Lords...and so many more over the years. All worthy foes on the sands that he had sent his warriors against in glorious combat! Most of them long gone.... Yet so many goals had been achieved here as well. Twenty-five Duelmasters and 26 Lord Protectors. Nearly 800 victories. The defeat of every interloping alliance to ever challenge him. Numerous Tournament Victors, including at the top end of the dueling ranks. Truly there were few who approached his achievements and certainly no one in Arvat had ever come close. There certainly was his legacy to consider. And Turn 500 was rapidly approaching. The Dark One rose in the shadows and hissed one word...'No.' He would not fade into obscurity in his home city nor would he allow his guildhouse to become a home for vermin. He would stay and rebuild his team into the powerhouse it had always been in the past. He would help restore Arvat to the glory of the past. Sometimes it was possible to rekindle the flame. Throwing open the doors of the library he stormed into the guildhouse. "Rise and listen, my children! Great deeds are afoot and the future is here! Go forth unto the city and announce to all that beginning on Arvat's 500th turn, there shall be no mercy! The Devil Advocates shall reclaim the sands of the arena!" At that, it began. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * A note from your Editor regarding the following two spotlights. Normally, neither of these would be published. Though they are game related, they are primarily "real-world" rather than Alastarian. In general, and where possible or known, we try not to print things which are non-Alastarian or non- fantasy. However, since we have both sides presenting their version of the same events, these spotlights have been included in this newsletter. That's it though. Both parties have had their say and further recriminations, justifications, and explanations can be made privately, in an Alastarian context in the personals, or on the sands. Ed. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * A MATTER OF TRUST The Icelord, First Mage of The Council of Lords, sat at his great desk in the fortified guildhouse of The Stormguards in Chimlevtal. A crystal ball was before him. He drummed his fingers on the table and turned his thoughts to many matters at hand. His blood-brother, High Lord Bosk, had just been whisked away by foul creatures through a magic gate. The Arch-Mage was now about to depart to show these creatures the err of their ways. (this story line is in Chimlevtal) He thought of Arvat and then of this manager "Destitute Noble." For many years he had respected him. That ended some two years ago. The Icelord and Lord Bosk had expanded their interests to Arvat and pursued a goal that would enable Bosk to graduate an Aimed Blow style warrior. Bosk would then have graduated all ten styles. Freki of the Harbingers showed promise and was close to immortality. Bosk attended a face-to-face tournament and met Destitute Noble and Talon Volksie. Because Bosk TRUSTED D.N., he told them of his desire and goal to graduate an AB. He asked them to respect and honor his request to fight others and not interfere with Freki's graduation. A true warrior would of told him TO HIS FACE, "no, we are going to go after Freki, use your avoids" if that was his intent. These two were not true warriors though. They smiled like cheshire cats and betrayed the TRUST Bosk had in them. Maybe they got hacked because Bosk spilled a tankard of ale on their table by accident. Whatever the reason, the cheshire cats smiled and plotted behind his back. Talon promptly challenged Freki and killed him. (The two cheshire cats then wrote an article braying of their great and honorable deed.) T.V. fought one BF, which his gladiator barely survived, and then went inactive saying he had "other goals to pursue." D.N. tried to justify betraying Bosk's TRUST and quickly sent a DA creation named "Freki's Lover" to Chimlevtal. What a class act. A few months later, one of D.N.'s gladiators slew one of The Icelord's warriors. The next turn the coward sat out the gladiator and wouldn't BF at all, claiming he was tourney prepping. Certainly permitted by the rules but that was the final straw. The Icelord had been busy during the next year: he lead a fight against the undead creature known as The Revenant and was focused on The COL-VC war in Chimlevtal. Now his focus was on Arvat. He didn't like those who laughed at TRUST and (at least in the game) friendship. He would never stand for anyone disrespecting High Lord Bosk. He didn't like anyone who didn't have the guts to tell you to your face that he was going to ridicule and cut you. Bosk deserved an apology. If one wasn't forth coming The Icelord was prepared to expose the cheshire cat for the dishonorable conduct they had displayed. D.N.'s trustworthiness would be challenged. The Wizard rose. He had tweaked and challenged enough to get his enemies attention. A little "Arvat Challenge 2005" seemed in order. It would certainly liven up Arvat for the rest of the year. It would also let him show the cats what he thought of their little game. Raoul the Rude stepped forth as he prepared to depart. "I will ride to Arvat and beat the snot out of the pud." stated the hulking mercenary. The Icelord chuckled. "Just so. But this is not going to be an alliance war, my friend. Just a little challenge. I depart. I need you to tend to matters here in Chimlevtal, Bosk and I will return soon." "TRUST me." stated Raoul. "I do." replied The Icelord * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * Rather than take my time in the spotlight pointing fingers and calling names, let me tell my fellow managers the course of events that led to this "war" between Icelord and myself. To fully appreciate the tale, you need to go back in time, I believe 18 months, and transport yourself to Tempe.... I believe it was Saturday, later in the day during a quiet moment of the tournament, when High Lord Bosk (or Bosk as we'll call him) came strolling into the room. I'm not one to cast judgement on others. Especially at times of great jubilation and celebration, one should be given a free pass when one does not conform to normal social standards. It was obvious to Talon (my comrade in arms) and myself, that Bosk had been celebrating a bit too hard (his odd lurching steps and slurred voice quickly gave away the culprit of his condition). He made the rounds in the room, chatting with other managers. As he approached and sat at our table, we greeted him cordially, and chatted a bit about goings on in different cities. He told a tale of Freki (a warrior both Talon and I were familiar with since he hailed from Arvat, an arena both Talon and I fielded a team in), the last best hope for himself to graduate an aimed blow, the only style he had yet to graduate to AD. How Freki was within a few wins of getting the call, and achieving immortality for himself and Bosk. As Bosk continued, he managed to knock over one of our drinks (or perhaps it was his--I don't remember) drenching many strategy changes for our warriors. He went on his merry way, and I don't believe I actually saw him for the rest of the stay in Tempe. Deep down, we knew it was not the most noble of things to do--and I'm not sure who brought it up first amongst us, but we both agreed that it was time for Freki to go. Not only because of the affront to us (the gods know I've been drunk many times at face to face tournaments--but have never made a scene like this), but also to carry on the tradition of the pain of warrior management. That is, the ongoing struggle to better oneself through combat a tradition older than the hills. Talon had managed to graduate all 10 styles before me in his career. It took many years for me to graduate a striker, and I had toiled many nights over how to look for a warrior with striker potential, then managing to keep him alive long enough to graduate. We wanted to ensure Bosk remembered that this managerial life was never meant to be an easy one. Many of us grow fat and happy with our years of successes, sometimes, it's good to know a bit of adversity every now and again. James Hetfield took that sense of security away from Bosk, and his not fighting after the kill was, again, perhaps not the most noble of things to do, but he was indeed timing himself for a tournament, and he did not like the matchups Bosk's team presented at the time. Challenging down to beat/kill another's warrior is nothing new as far as my memory serves for Bosk and crew, so it's still a mystery to me why this death seemed to haunt him for so long. My subsequent chronicling of this incident, and various personal ads and challenges back and forth here, and in other arenas have brought the situation to a head--enough so where Bosk's greatest confidant The Icelord has picked up the perceived gauntlet and slapped my face with it. They've called me many names, and questioned my manhood, yet I choose to go by that age-old adage--sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. I'm not sure whether this contest will bring an end to the feud or not, and at this point I do not care. My main goal the rest of this year is to beat The Icelord here, and seek their group out in any arena I'm fighting in and use challenges and avoids liberally to let them know of my presence. My being a historian is not a crime and I maintain that my words here are the exact happenings and a reasoning for attacking Freki. It was not a stab in the back--we had no known non-challenge pact that either Talon or myself was aware of-- nor were we allies in any way, just cordial competitors. Now we'll see where this all takes us. Happy 500th Arvat--You've always been one of my favorites, and I'm proud (and surprised) you've made it this long!! Destitute Noble DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. And what is this? I am matched with a Killing Machine? It was no worse than the time my boat was caught on the edge of a whirlpool, so that I had to struggle desperately to escape. And I escaped alive this time, too, and even devastated the Machine! But I seem to have serious problems with my aim. I must work on that, if some other gladiator leaves me alive to do so. Boatman Ku SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Say good-bye to DEVIL ADVOCATES, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the CALL THE PRIEST stable. It looks like the guys(?) at THE STORMLORDS had a good week as they went 4-1-0 to put them in 4th place. I guess steroids help! Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. LITTLE RAINBOW was overcame by KUNG-FU MASTER and drops 21 points. SILVER TRAIN got through to the Duelmaster this turn. No doubt he was more than anxious to kick BOATMAN KU's tail out of the throne! In front of all the crowds, SILVER TRAIN took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum two weeks. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay. But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle! And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid CALL THE PRIEST, please raise you hand. Wow. Does ARVAT really have that many liars? And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause THE STORMLORDS beats feet every time CALL THE PRIEST smiles at them. Try farming, eh? And who is this SINNER you ask, with 28 points and a 2-2-0 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell! In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, ELECTRIC EYE went after IZUSU TROOPER, who was higher by 21 points. Well, when the dust settled, ELECTRIC EYE won victory over IZUSU TROOPER. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights.
