No useful purpose would have been served by making such a claim, and it would have taken time and energy to defend it--time and energy which he preferred to spend on other things. And what was in a name, after all? It was significant that whenever the Bandit Princes met in secret council to debate problems and questions of policy, they always invited Zrof to attend. Tonight, the meeting was being held at the Baths of Terulio, an establishment which had been purchased a year ago by Doreg, one of the younger Bandit Princes. Parts of the building were ancient, said to pre-date the Chaos War of five hundred years ago. No one knew who, exactly, had built it, but the Fratsfans had been involved at some point, as the pointed Gathic arches testified. And the Serevadans must have had a hand in those atria. Had the Ferencians erected the colonnades? Despite the hodgepodge of architectural styles, and the Rirorni "furnishings" (tapestries, carpets, and cushions) with which Doreg had filled it, the whole thing was pleasing to the eye. And magnificently pleasing to the body. Zrof emerged from the hot pool, plunged briefly into the cold one, and finally allowed an attendant to wrap him in a toga-like bath sheet. Relaxing, refreshing, and--he allowed another servant to hand him a goblet of wine--supplied with the best vintages. He strolled into the private dining chamber that had been set aside for the meeting. Seven of the Princes were there already, and Doreg would doubtless enter at any moment. With himself, that made nine, and seven Princes were enough to conduct business in the name of the city. "This is a wasteful extravagance," Barandine grumbled. He was noted for his parsimony, he habitually dressed in plain, well-worn clothing, and he had been known to serve guests in his palace with a meal that the lowest tavern in the town could better. He was never slow to indulge in Doreg's generous meals, of course, and presently he sat in front of a plate loaded with roast venison, glazed ham, two roasted and stuffed pigeons.... Zrof shuddered and averted his gaze. That kind of indulgence made a man fat and slow, and a Bandit Prince of Zukal, the most intrigue-riddled city in Alastari, could not afford to be fat or slow. "You consider that it was too extravagant of Doreg to offer us this fine meal? The good wine?" The Arenamaster studied the selection on the long table--there were never servants at these private meetings--and picked up a plate. "No, if he wants to feast us, that is proper. He's the youngest of us, after all. It shows respect. It's buying this bathhouse in the first place, not to mention all the restoration work he's done here--wasteful! Extravagant! Just throwing his money away--" "I happen to know that the Terulio makes him a very handsome profit," Zrof countered. "And even if it didn't, so what? He isn't spending YOUR money." "Quite true." Doreg had entered unnoticed and now took his place at the table. "I have received word that none of the others can come tonight, therefore the doors are closed and the meeting is begun." The young (perhaps thirty) Rirorni fixed Barandine with a hard stare. "You called this meeting. Why? Surely it wasn't just to protest my business ventures." "I have several points," the older man growled. "First--" here he shot a spiteful glance at Zrof, "that we should close down the arena finally and completely, raze the structure, and turn the land to other uses. It's a good location--" "The arena is breaking even at the present," Zrof said. "Things may improve later--they have in the past. But in any case, the arena structure AND the land it stands on belongs to ME, and I have a contract with the Lady Greywand which requires that I keep it open until she says otherwise. If you, Barandine, make one move to damage my property or interfere with the fulfillment of my contract, I will see you dead...slowly." Barandine flushed with anger, which was easily visible on his light complexion-- could he be a renegade Fratsfan? That raised an interesting question with regard to a rumor Zrof had picked up three days ago. It had seemed unlikely at the time. True, men of all races poured through the city, but why should the Fratsfans care who ruled it? They were a long way off, and by all accounts their emperor was devoted to agricultural experiments. "Who cares what the Grey Witch wants?" Barandine demanded. "Besides, what She wants won't matter at all, soon." His narrow mouth twisted into an unpleasant smile. "She's an old woman, when all is said and done. Old women die. They're well known for it." "Fine. When the situation changes, we can think about other uses for the land," Zrof said. "But not until then, because I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for a five-thousand-year-old witch to die. She's had a lot more practice staying alive." Barandine opened his mouth, probably to argue, but there was an interruption. Karolvingar, the Roving Demon of Zukal, erupted into the room. Quite literally. The floor tiles near the back wall flew apart, and the demon burst upward in a fountain of flame. "To arms!" the demon cried. "To arms, leaders of Zukal, for your doom is upon you!" "From you?" Zrof asked. The Roving Demon was a some-time standby at the arena, and he had a fair idea of its fighting ability. He would bet on himself to take Karolvingar down in two minutes, armed only with a table knife and an offhand fork, and with nothing but a bath sheet for armor. "Not I!" Karolvingar looked offended. "You must realize that I consider myself to be practically a Bandit Prince of Zukal myself! All the lesser demons in the city defer to me, after all, and I have...certain enterprises here which I would not like to see disturbed." The demon shrugged. "And in what other city of Alastari would the people be so cosmopolitan as to tolerate a community of demons? No, the danger comes from Barikala--" "Which has been cut off from all contact with the rest of the world for some years now," Barandine snapped. "Which is, in fact, one of the points I wanted to--" Karolvingar flicked one leathery wing at the Prince. "Be silent, old man, you know nothing about it." Barandine opened his mouth, but Doreg cut in before the narrow-faced old man could speak. "Tell us how Barikala menaces the city, Sir Demon," he said. "Firstly, are you aware that the island has become the focus of a cluster of uncontrolled rips in the boundaries between worlds? And that creatures which you would call monsters are emerging from this rips?" "I've heard," Zrof said, and Doreg nodded also. "Excellent, it saves time. Know now that not all the 'monsters' which appear are what you might call 'beasts'. Some of them are as intelligent as any human--more intelligent than some," the demon added with a glance at Barandine. "And they have decided that Alastari is a fair land, well suited to become their new home. It is, in fact, an invasion such as those spoken of in the time you call the Chaos War. For NOW, it is localized around Barikala and the delta of the Urt. But if it is not stopped there, it will spread to all this world." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Old Secrets #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Riztab: Torric, spymaster for Riztab's arena, twitched a shoulder and looked over his shoulder at the dark silhouette of the New Town. One hand went to the shutter of the dark-lantern he carried, but he paused and shook his head. Better not to invite notice, though he did not relish the prospect of entering the old arena offices in the dark. Still, sometimes unpleasant tasks had to be done, and he did know the old building better than most. He would once have said, "better than anybody," but there was evidence now that someone had been raiding the old records. He hadn't told anyone that. He hefted the spear in his other hand and prodded in front of him where the dark waters of the lake glimmered in starlight. Gods, who would have thought Makrok would be that stupid? Oh, hell, who would have believed that something as valuable and dangerous as those old codices were in Riztab at all, much less in one of the old offices? He glanced over his shoulder again. He couldn't see the Isle wizard, but he was sure the man was there somewhere, watching him. Why couldn't the old spell-twister get the codices himself? Why did HE, Torric, have to do this. Torric sighed. No good putting it off. He stepped forward, grimacing as the cold water immediately penetrated his boots. They were good boots, or they had been, but nothing kept the lake out when it wanted in. Testing his route with the spear, the spy waded farther. There were bad things in the lake. Monsters, of course, all large bodies of water had monsters. But there were smaller things that were just as bad, or worse. Snakes. Leeches. He shuddered; leeches were bad. He hated leeches. Deep holes where they shouldn't be, that a man could step into and break an ankle and drown. The bulk of the old arena building blocked the starlight as he came nearer. It always looked strange in the dark. Hell, it looked strange enough by daylight. Those gargoyles, and the way the windows peered.... He really didn't want to go into the old ruin. But he'd promised the wizard that he'd bring out the chest with the old, old, OLD records. And it wasn't a good idea to break a promise made to a wizard. Near Arvat: Spymaster Lovenar was annoyed, and he didn't care who knew it. He kept one hand on Geroge Kase's collar, shoving the Captured Orc forward as fast as the narrow path permitted. He didn't like orcs. He didn't like being out here in the marshy fringes of the delta. In fact, he didn't like much of anything in his life at the moment, but he had plans to make changes. And Kase was the key which would unlock the first door for him. He pushed the orc again. Kase promptly stumbled. "No good rushing along like this," he whined. "It's a wizard's tower, dammit, we have to sneak up on it, not go rushing in." "Deserted, you said." "Damn straight! I wouldn't go near it if there was a wizard in residence, I'm not such a fool as that. But even a deserted wizard's tower is...well, it's unchancy." Lovenar shoved the orc again. "You're a coward as well as a fool." "I'm a fool for ever mentioning the tower," Kase muttered. The path emerged from the close-growing, man-tall reeds onto open water. Well, open except for waterlilies, and lower reeds of some grass-like type, and patches of miscellaneous plants. Lovenar was not a botanist, and to him they were all weeds. The important thing was the tower on the other side of the water. It was, as Kase had reported, half-ruined and apparently vacant. But only a wizard would have built such a tower in the first place, and even deserted, a wizard's tower might hold prizes worth having. He meant to have them. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. I am honored to once again stand before you as Arvat's Champion. I salute Tassalter for an excellent fight and tremendous effort. I wonder if I will graduate any time soon. Is there some sort of requirement to have at least two ratings to go to the Isle? <chuckle> Let's see who we have as Challenger Champions.... Tassalter might be going for the BF this turn. Good luck! Silver Train is looking fired up after that tourney performance and Stratostar is a rising star. The Trainer did make an ridiculous comment to my manager, so I think I'll throw an avoid their way to make them earn a shot at the title. Oh, there is Electric Eye. He did a pretty good job on Obsidian Golem for sure. I am sure Destitute N is avoiding as our challenges seem to have a hard time going through. What the heck! Good hunting! Sensoo O Suru The Stormlords The Council of Lords SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of ARVAT brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, SARATOGA GLORY, since CALL THE PRIEST took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for HARBINGERS, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 10th. Ha! Middle of the road, COLLEGE RADIO, middle of the road; you'll get no good words from me, until you get better, or worse. Break a leg. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see UNITED win a fight and gain 23 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, UNITED beat LOU CYPHER and LOU CYPHER lost 20 points. You're breakin' my heart. SENSOO O SURU challenged TASSALTER for ARVAT's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And it's out with the old, in with the new, as TASSALTER takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Swinging Aardvark, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From ARVAT's trash dumps? He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's the big D? CALL THE PRIEST was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was THE STORMLORDS. Ha ha ha ha! LOGGERHEAD was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. And we have IZUSU TROOPER in a challenge, going down 10 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought IZUSU TROOPER showed great skill and promise when it won victory over LOGGERHEAD. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and gone, and get to see if their team cared. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons? I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of ARVAT. I feel much better now. The Council salutes Lord Protector Obsidian Golem! -- The Icelord the Trainer -- Interesting and IMO silly comments on your part. I run and hide from no one. OUR challenges don't always go through, but I suppose that means nothing to you. According to the spy report on turns #498 & #499 DN avoided us the most. On turns #500 & #503 we avoided them the most. Those tourney skills he got might make me try to avoid certain matchups too. Perhaps you could find someone to challenge and show me how its done? We raise our swords and bow our heads in honor of Boatman Ku and Little Rainbow. -- The Stormlords Obsidian Golem -- Good riddance, and what a great way for you to leave, with your tail between your legs. Hey, I realize there's NO way that Noble would have ever let you on his squad, but I bet he would have made certain that you had carried a back up weapon into the arena. He told me that the only manager that would let his warrior go into a fight without a backup weapon was one who had never been in the arena himself. I'd suggest carrying one or more in AD...but then I guess your fighting career has ended, and your sweater-making career has begun. Make sure you have that one back-up knitting needle in your basket. -- Electric Eye RIP Killing Machine -- 7-9-11-15-11-10-21 (or so), totally mode in everything he had a level in, not ambi. Please remember, the turn I had come back (I sent the turn in before I saw on the forum that Icelord had called me out) he went DA and beat Bandit Prince. Why don't you think about the common good every once in a while instead of just "me, me, me!" Jeez. -- Isuzu Trooper Icelord -- Regarding your comments last turn about how Destitute Noble's "'good guy' image is in the dumper now." Do you really think that anyone who knows him thinks any less of him because of whatever personal vendetta you and your cronies are on? From the truth I can glean from the stories being told, it may not have been very neighborly to try and kill someone's warrior and thumb one's nose about it, but hardly an uncommon occurrence and not something I would expect a seasoned manager to get so incensed over. And it wasn't even DN's kill if I remember it right? Exact your revenge if you like, but don't be deluded into thinking that anyone perceives this as anything more than an axe to grind on your part. -- The Sentinel Sensoo O Suru -- Yes, well, I suppose considering the kind of turn my teammates have had today, I should be glad to be alive.
