Between Zukal and Arvat:

Doreg and Zrof rode for an hour, taking successively smaller and muddier roads,
trails, paths through the delta's marshy forest.
"We could have made as good time on foot," the younger Bandit Prince muttered.
"People would have followed us," Zrof One-Eye answered. "Someone on foot is...
more accessible than a mounted man. We'll be leaving our horses up ahead, though.
It really isn't riding territory," he agreed.
The path looped around a large tree liberally decorated with hanging rags of--
Doreg squinted at them--with hanging rags. Cloth. Odd. One might hang up rags to
dry after washing, but these were filthy. He looked more closely as they rode past
the tree. Most of them appeared to be bloodstained. He began to wonder what kind of
place the arenamaster was taking him to.
Then he sighed. They were going in search of a Demon Prince; naturally it
wouldn't be safe.

Near Arvat:

Spymaster Lovenar of Arvat walked back and forth along the water's edge and
could not find a clear way around. He would have to wade, maybe even swim. He broke
a slender sapling off near the ground, not as easy as he had expected, and used it to
probe the pool in front of him. It just went in...and in...and in. He couldn't feel
a bottom.
This was not possible. It was some kind of trick. How could anything go from a
firm if muddy bank to bottomless water without a slope? And if it DID, what might be
lurking there?
He glowered at the tower on the other side of the pool. This was wizard's work.
Some kind of defense. Probably illusion. He should just step forward confidently.
Yes, that's what he should do, a confident step forward. Not a problem. Just
step....
He could not make his feet move. It wasn't that they were frozen to the spot,
he could step BACK just fine. But he could not force himself to go forward.
And now that he thought about it, why should he want to go forward? What was
there in an abandoned tower to draw his interest? He squinted at it. Now that he
looked more closely, he could see that it was not, as he had at first thought, stone;
it was wood, and decaying wood at that. Probably some swamp-harvester's shelter. It
didn't look so much like a tower at all on closer examination. Really, it would be a
waste of his time to go over there. What was he thinking?
With a shrug equally compounded of puzzlement and exasperation, Spymaster
Lovenar turned and forced his way down the narrow path which would take him back to
Arvat.

The Obsidian Golem stood no more than three yards from Lovenar's position on the
edge of the water and watched the spymaster hesitate and finally turn away. It was a
puzzle; why should the man come here and then leave? But humans were endlessly
puzzling. Once it was sure the spymaster had left, the golem turned back to the
tower. This was its goal. What Arenamistress Sugar wanted it to do here was unknown
as yet, but HERE was where it had been directed to go. With a shrug of its massive,
dark-gleaming shoulders, it stepped forward into the water.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Good evening, Arvat. I've come to you this fine night after yet another successful
defense of the throne, this time against an arena stand-in. It almost seems a shame
to have such a hollow victory that allows me to sit in front of you for another turn
--but then again, I'll happily take anything that is given to me--so few are willing
to give nowadays, they just want to take and take and take. A similar fate befalls
our squad this turn, we still have four of the top seven, and thanks to Freewheel
Burnin's ability to "take out some trash", we now have five of the top nine warriors
here. It'd be cool if we could end up with the top five next turn--but I doubt that
will happen, especially if M.A. Fistafoles attempts to bloodfeud Loggerhead, one of
those two would almost certainly be in the mix somewhere if that does happen.

The city is rather quiet tonight, word has just arrived to our guildhouse of two
young warriors here in Arvat that have brought our city glory--congrats go out to
Greater Orc and Malice, the former has achieved tournament victor status, and the
latter fell just shy at 7-3. Our guild did not send anyone, but we plan to let
Freewheel Burnin' give it a shot in a few months presuming he's still with us then.

In parting, I say sincerely that I hope Charon's spirit rests in peace tonight--he'll
likely be sleeping with the dead for eternity. He joins Thor as enemies dispatched
during our contest with the Stormlords--and judging by how Freewheel is practicing,
he's aiming to send some more to early graves--beware!!

Before The Dawn

                                      SPY REPORT

Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARVAT this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. On their very first turn, PHILANTHROPISTS had a
4-1-1, and with this kind of luck or skill, should do well. Welcome to ARVAT. And
let's see, FREDDIE fought MISERY and gained 20 points and contributed to FISHERMAN'S
WHARF's 1-4-0. MISERY has lost to FREDDIE, falling 13 points, while helping make
ANGELS OF PAIN a 3-2-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed,
and BEFORE THE DAWN remains ARVAT's top warrior for another turn. Can someone
confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at
The Dripping Blade until they win. Maybe?
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. DEVIL ADVOCATES has cause to stand tall, as they were ARVAT's
most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who
avoided DEVIL ADVOCATES stable the most? Believe it or not, it was DEVIL ADVOCATES.
Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that LOGGERHEAD from FISHERMAN'S
WHARF was ARVAT's most challenged warrior this turn.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. Kudos go out to M. A. FISTAFOLES this turn, for revenging DEVIL ADVOCATES'
bloodfeud against FISHERMAN'S WHARF's warrior LOGGERHEAD. Well done. We'd like to
remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies.  You know who you are;
and it's considered rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Always good to rest in ARVAT, but never good to wear out my welcome. Look
for me in future turns. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to paper-- Alarond
the Scribe

                                     PERSONAL ADS

I was looking back on turn 499--and Trainer's words there. Here is his personal ad
from that turn:

Here is the over/under on wins between the Stormlords and Call the Priest for the
rest of the calendar year:

Stormlords 43.5
Call the Priest 53.5

See the Trainer for wagering. We will start counting wins as of Turn 499. Saratoga
Glory Stable will keep track of the records.

Right now it looks as if his crystal ball was pretty clear that day! Though I view
our feud as starting on turn 497 (the turn I reappeared here) since turn 498 our
records are as follows: Call The Priest 40-20-2 The Stormlords 24-35-0. Of the
total, we currently stand at 17-11-2-0 for me, 11-17-0-2 for Icelord. Four turns
left, and Icelord gets four BF shots at Freewheel Burnin'. He used the bloodfeud to
get the early jump on me (I was down 5-9 as of turn 503), let's see if he can use it
to get back into the thick of things. -- D. Noble

Sentinel -- I'm glad the channel is changed. The hot air you were blowing was
getting boring. -- The Icelord

Charon was 9-13-12-17-9-13-11 ST. He has departed this realm and returned to his
duties on the River Styx. We salute him! -- The Stormlords

Ghost of Dee Spader -- oops. -- Loggerhead
P.S. I didn't set out to kill you, obviously. Well, look at my style! But you came
out with no ARMOR, you had to KNOW you'd get hurt.
P.P.S. I don't recognize that strategy, either. A broadsword, and going OE 10 in
the second minute? I don't think that's original to me.
P.P.P.S. Sure did work, though!

Brian Boru -- You're just jealous because I'm better looking. -- The Shrimp, master
of inane excuses

Fury -- You're really "into" the name thing, aren't you? The way you came roaring
out at me...amazing. And there was I standing there on one foot. Oh, well. -- Heron

Balain of Ivelin -- That's the way to start, suck up those skills! -- Freddie

It is with a proud heart that I announce the newest member of the Desolate Empire
alliance. Dok Sik will be known from here forth as Dark Knight Dok Sik, of the
Desolate Empire. May he be blessed with victory and courage. May his enemies' blood
flow freely! -- The Dark Knights Wasby and Toker
