                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Last turn's column:

Hail Arvat!

I am your new Duelmaster--Lou Cypher--having taken out Sinner in a surprisingly
easy fight. Of course one of the benefits of being on the Devil Advocates, according
to the boss, is having lots of strength and size. There isn't a warrior on our team
who doesn't do less than good damage and three of us do great or tremendous. The
benefit, I suppose, of not having the wit or will or deftness of a "good" warrior.
I am the 25th Duelmaster from the Devil Advocates to hold this throne--11 more
than the next in line--the Glorious Roman Heroes. I will eventually, with luck, be
the 27th Lord Protector from this line. Of course I am bloodfeuding Electric Eye
this turn for killing Bill Zeybub, which is probably foolish, but honor demands it.
Bill was actually one of the better Devil Advocates, stat wise, sporting a 17/15
wit/will combination, however he learned an average of 1.2 skills a fight, which is
woefully low. Until we saw hisreplacement, we thought EE did us a favor....
Electric Eye will find me much faster and more skillful than Bill.
We will not be writing any personal ads this turn as our personals didn't make
it again last turn and we figure they will be showing up next turn. We've been
sounding rather schizophrenic in the personals lately due to this.... Of course this
column may run late as well, in which case we'll be sounding even stranger....
Best of luck on the sands this week, Arvat, and may your blades be sharp, except
against us!

                                        Lou Cypher

This turn's column:

Greetings once again, Arvat!

I'm afraid I'm not sure when you will get to read this column, as my column from
last turn was not printed and will likely run next turn, so I think this one will run
on the following turn....
In any case, it is our policy to write a column regardless of when it is
printed, so here we go....
This turn I did battle both for the honor of our fallen comrade Bill Zeybub and
also for defense of the title. The foe: Electric Eye, a long time arena stalwart
and tough opponent. Fortunately I was well more than a match for him and the battle
was not close. Therefore I am back upon the throne again this week.
In fact, it was a good turn for the Devil Advocates, going 4-1 with the only
loss being our new recruit, an experiment who did not pan out, from what I have
heard. Our sister team, the Angels of Pain, went 4-1-1 with the kill being an
extremely odd one. Justice, a very skilled and talented Total Parry, fought Greater
Orc of Gemstone Beasts, a skilled tourney basher. The fight was slower than
expected, with the Orc's initiative effectively holding an advantage and him landing
an occasional blow. Justice's defense held, however, and soon it seemed that the Orc
would drop from exhaustion. Out of nowhere, Justice--running on his late minute
endurance conserving strategy--began unleashing critical attacks and landed a
stunning blow to the Orc's head. A previously unseen bloodlust arose in him and a
moment laster the Orc was dead! Most surprising and unsought after. Our condolences
to the manager of the Orc. That was a tough way to lose a promising warrior.
That is all for this week!

                                             Lou Cypher

                                      SPY REPORT

It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! CALL THE PRIEST? Who? DEVIL ADVOCATES is the top team these days,
buddies! CALL THE PRIEST after a sorry 2-3-0 might want to consider abandoning the
sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more' blues! Nothing works for a
team like victory (How's that for a perceptive observation?) as RILL'S GCSC2 can
attest... Say what you will about blind luck and dirty fighting, but THE STORMLORDS
will tell you 154-153-12 is nothing to laugh at... VIRTUOUS LEGION had cause to
celebrate, after HONOR got 14 points by beating DEMETREN. HERON certainly had a
baffled expression on his face, after losing to ULTHAR ULSAY and losing 9 points in
the process! Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by GRETH, of
RILL'S GCSC2, who despite a 5-1-0 couldn't overcome ARVAT's Number 1. Word has it
one team in ARVAT is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! To quell some nasty rumors, the guys
in PHILANTHROPISTS are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em.
As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of THE STORMLORDS, so did that
sorry team shy from PHILANTHROPISTS If challenges were horses, HERON could open up a
fast food joint! Take heed ARVAT, of the unprincipled action of M. A. FISTAFOLES.
By challenging UNITED, 20 points below him, M. A. FISTAFOLES besmirches the noble art
of dueling. Warriors of ARVAT! Do you wish your reputations tainted by the base
challenge of M. A. FISTAFOLES? Them's the breaks, FREEWHEEL BURNIN'. Expecting fair
challenges from ANGELS OF PAIN is evidently too much to ask. Bookies and FURY were
more than a little surprised, as FREEWHEEL BURNIN' snatched an easy victory from
FURY, gaining 20 points. As a confidence booster, JUSTICE challenged ROLTON, down 22
points. Do you also slay vicious rodents in your spare time, JUSTICE? JUSTICE
subdued ROLTON. The whole thing leaves a bitter memory.
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Ask not for
whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. As if buffeted by forces of nature beyond
my control, I must take my leave of this place. Like a mixed metaphor, and an
overtaxed simile, I now bid ARVAT farewell-- Novgorodny Vir

Loggerhead -- I like the result of our first fight much better! And no one that
throws that many crits is a fool. -- Roland

Rolton -- That was disappointing. If I had hung on just a bit longer or blocked one
more of those attacks I might have been able to turn the battle around as you were
starting to get tired. Unfortunately you managed to finish it. Congratulations,
this time. -- Demmell

Ulthar Ulsay -- You unlucky, me too good for you. -- Greth

S. Moe Deus -- An unfortunate random match up for you. Hopefully our teams can avoid
fighting each other as often. -- Demetren

Dark One -- Yeah, I was disappointed I missed the turn. Didn't realize I had missed
it until it was too late, but that is usually the case when you forgot about
something. If you remember about it in time then you didn't really forget, now did
you? -- Rillion

Tripwire -- Welcome to Arvat. Only cowards fight less than a full team in Arvat. So
why are you only fighting two warriors? -- Rillion

Virtuous Legion -- Same goes to you. Fight a full team or transfer your tourney
warriors to an arena that welcomes them! -- Rillion

Roland -- Well, by your team name, I guess you've got tourney experience. Either
that, or you're totally nuts, of course, instead of just half nuts like most
gladiators. Good try, crazy kid. -- Loggerhead
P.S. Either I've got a successful input error, or Jorja actually had a moment of
acting like a manager. Don't know, but I'm not going to protest to the Commission.
This works. Today, anyway. So I'm keeping it.

Bisimwa -- Hmm. Big International Silicon Mine Workers' Association? Bird In Swamp

In Muddy Water Alone? Bittern Ibis Swan Icy Mid Winter Assembly? I could go on with
this speculation for some time, although the duplication of the letter "I" makes it
tricky. -- Heron

Spectral Knight -- I kept aiming for you, I was CAREFUL about it, and you weren't
there when the blow arrived. This is the "spectral" bit, isn't it? Frustrating. --
Sarlow

Eve Elewon -- You didn't need those skills, you were doing just FINE without them. --
Peter Pepper
P.S. Your names, spelled backward, are Eve Nowele (the second word pronounced no-
ell). Does this mean you're undercover in your team?

Jhanti Gravett -- Well, at least you didn't tell me I was a "fine opponent" or try to
bury me in the sand. I suppose I should be grateful for those small favors. But I'm
not. I'm pissed. -- Ghost of Leik

Devil Advocates -- They know that, they're just sulking. It's been a nasty winter
here, and the furnace broke down, they don't dare complain to ME, so...I guess they
figure a comment in the newsletter is safe. -- Jorja
P.S. Safer, anyway.
P.P.S. And yes, of course we're here to be challenged. That IS what we're for. But
sometimes the troops don't remember where their beans and cornbread comes from. (And
I was probably under the influence of carbon monoxide when I typed that....)
P.P.P.S. But I hate recruiting, and now I've got to do it again.

Rolton -- Nobody asked ME. *I* asked YOU. Thanks for answering. -- Peter Pepper
P.S. I guess you're from a different world, because I never heard of carnivorous
sheep in this one. (Why else the razor-sharp teeth?)

22 February 2006
The Olympics have arrived!

The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti
Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for
recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth
Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant
arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a
'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by
activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will
be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be
available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be
posted. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
