DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
That happened sooner than I expected! Too bad my personals did not appear because
Greth did predict that if he fought Lou again that Greth would prevail. I am going
to take this opportunity to introduce Greth to everyone. These warriors are all
named after my DND characters (well, except for Gelen, since he wasn't really good
enough to give a real name, sorry Gelen but it's true) from the RPGA Living Greyhawk
campaign (LG). I usually run into the great folks from RSI at Gencon SoCal every
year and created this team there while I was playing in LG.
Greth is a half orc (listed as an orc by the commission) who was raised in an orcish
tribe. His mother was a captured human enslaved by the orc tribe. Greth was always
picked on and beaten up by the orc kids. When he was about fourteen, his mother died
and with nothing left to tie him to the tribe, he escaped and fled to the land of
humans that his mother had told him about. Once in human lands he realized he did
not fit in with these civilized people. They considered him a barbarian and the only
people that seemed to be accepting of Greth were 'adventurers'. So Greth joined them
and has been an adventurer to this day. In one of his first adventures he
encountered the spawn of a Vampire. This spawn dominated Greth's mind and turned him
against his fellow adventuring companions. Fortunately his companions were able to
disarm Greth and disable him and eventually defeated the spawn that was controlling
him. Since that day, Greth has concentrated on learning about magic and steeling
himself against magical mental intrusions. Now, several years later, he is on the
cusp of learning how to completely shield his mind from magical enchantments and has
also learned how to more effectively damage those that wield spells.
Another notable event in his adventuring career was when he recovered a powerful rod
that could be used to control demons. While the rest of his companions were debating
on how best to retrieve this rod, Greth in his impatience finally just grabbed the
rod so that they could leave with it. Unfortunately for Greth, this powerful magical
item bestowed a curse upon him. As he picked up the rod he started to change. His
skin became scaly, he grew a tail and fangs, his already rough orcish appearance took
on the appear of a demon. This caused him severe problems in social interactions.
It also affected his mind and gave him a darker outlook on life. While he had
previously always sought to do good, he now was more selfish and less inclined to
help people without any benefit for himself. This curse lasted for over a year
before on an adventure he earned the favor of an elf tribe and they used a limited
wish to remove the curse from Greth. While the demonic appearance is now gone,
Greth's outlook on life has not changed and if he wishes to consider himself a good
person again he must atone for his selfish deeds.
Well that's probably enough for now. Good fighting, everyone!
Rillion on behalf of Greth
SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARVAT this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. The PHILANTHROPISTS guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and
deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can
lead. And let's see, MISERY fought ULTHAR ULSAY and gained 22 points and contributed
to ANGELS OF PAIN's 3-2-0. ULTHAR ULSAY has lost to MISERY, falling 20 points, while
helping make THE STORMLORDS a 1-2-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster
have failed, and GRETH remains ARVAT's top warrior for another turn. Can someone
confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at
The Dripping Blade until they win. Maybe?
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. DEVIL ADVOCATES has cause to stand
tall, as they were ARVAT's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team
to beat. And avoiding DEVIL ADVOCATES more than any other team we find DEVIL
ADVOCATES. ARVAT, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most
challenged warrior this turn was FISHERMAN'S WHARF's warrior LOGGERHEAD. More
fighters challenged him than challenged the Duelmaster! I.M. CEYTIN of DEVIL
ADVOCATES had better have a good reason for challenging down 12 points in a challenge
which he won. I thought I.M. CEYTIN showed great skill and promise when he subdued
PETER PEPPER. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Is it really true that ARVAT has more dishwashers per capita that
fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
I like this place, ARVAT, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep
your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in ARVAT again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

PERSONAL ADS
I sent these ads last turn but they don't appear to have made the newsletter, even
though I got the confirmation that said they were received and filed in 32. Oh well.
-- Rillion
One of these days we'll *find* all those lost personals and really confuse
everyone. To make up for last turn's being missing HAL tried to foist four
copies of this turn's stuff on us. *sigh* -- Ed.
Lou Cypher -- You lucky you fight me now when you have huge experience advantage. Me
beat you if we ever fight again. -- Greth
Torment -- Another bad match up for one of your team against me. Lucky me. -- Roland
Sarlow -- I won! I won! I won! Heh, I need to celebrate; it might not happen
again. -- Gelen
Honor -- Well done. -- Demetren
Tenacity -- Tenacity alone is not enough. -- Demmell
Now for an ad for this turn. -- Rillion
Tripwire -- Wow, you are touchy. There is no sign saying you have to fight five
warriors. If you HAD to fight five warriors then you would have either fought five
warriors or none. That is generally the definition of "having" to do something. Is
simple word definition that hard for you to understand? It is perfectly within your
range of options to fight zero, one, two, three, four, or five warriors. Just as it
is perfectly within your range of options to be called a cowardly wimp that doesn't
have the guts to fight a full team here. The choice is yours and no one ever said it
wasn't. -- Rillion
Justice -- That was an impressive performance. I am so impressed I am going to try
again with a different strat. I can't believe I was flailing around like that. How
embarrassing! -- Rolton
Damnation -- That's what *I* said when I say who I was fighting. Sure, I know the
style match is SUPPOSED to be in my favor. As if that ever matters! Well, okay,
sometimes it matters, but not when it's ME out here. Doesn't matter what style I
meet, I'm chopped liver. -- Loggerhead, mildly depressed
With onions? -- Ed.
I.M. Cyetin -- You get a win, I get a single measly little skill and stay alive, is
this a fight? Loggerhead thinks HE is depressed? He doesn't know the half of it. --
Peter Pepper, seriously depressed
Torment -- Well, darn. Drat. I'm feeling really tormented here, I hope you're
happy! Heck. -- Heron
P.S. Besides, my feet are cold. I've got minnows nibbling my toes, and I hate that.
Tenacity -- You consider that a virtue? Hmm. Possibly, but only if allied with good
judgment. There can be a wrong time to be tenacious, you know. All too often!
Still, it gives you something to work on and take pride in, which is good. What do
*I* get to take pride in? What kind of admirable quality is gripple, eh? Just some
sort of random thought on my manager's part, as far as I can tell. Pooh. -- Gripple
(not my real name)
Honor -- I wish you'd been a girl. I've been hoping to meet girls now that I'm a
big-time athalete and all. -- Sarlow the disappointed
P.S. Could you get a sex change?
Gelen -- Well, I can sure sympathize with that! This calls for beer all around. --
Sarlow
Lord Protector M.A. Fistafoles -- Well, you probably heard what I said to your
teammate last time? It still goes, okay. Best wishes and stuff, maybe even a free
beer before you go, but that's all Arnnie is offering. -- Arenamistress Sugar

A few notes about e-mailed personals:
You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e-
mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on
the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit
something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a
receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination
any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body
of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to
make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see
that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather
simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name
or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti
appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that
may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes
things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all.
If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy
writing! -- Ed.
