TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The Return of an Arvat Legend....
The massive black gate had remained sealed for five long years. The imposing
stone walls, with their brooding gargoyle watchers, had weathered well the sands of
time. Since Turn 29, the towering Roman guildhouse had gradually increased in size,
stature and grandeur on its journey towards the pinnacle of greatness. The nearby
Temple of Caesar, an enormous structure with five hundred steps leading to its
bloodstained alter, had remained empty, its eternal flame apparently extinguished.
An intimidating symbol of former Roman power and glory. Of an era that had passed,
some said, into the dustbin of Arvat history. But no worthless local dared enter, or
even gaze upon its magnificent architecture for long. Its thousands of worshipers,
once flocking to poor, swampy Arvat from the distant reaches of Alastari, had ceased
their regular pilgrimages. Hundreds of coolies had perished building the towering
edifice, enduring grueling conditions in this hot Arvat sun, toiling night and day on
the grandiose project. It was an aggressive construction effort, employing thousands
of workers, on a scale never before been witnessed in the city of Arvat.
No longer did the great gates of the Roman guildhouse open to such legendary
dignitaries as the Dark One and Mad Max. No longer did the wild and flamboyant
parties cast their aura of decadence and debauchery over the city. Caesar, with his
beautiful Praetorian Bunnies at his side, lavishing in his great wealth and hosting
some of the most sought after events in Alastari, had vanished into the nightlife of
endless parties.
The locals steered clear of the brooding Roman citadel that towered in their
midst. Uncorroborated rumors occasionally spread throughout the city regarding
lights and secretive activity within its walls. Where had Caesar gone? Was he
within? Why did he not show himself? Had he abandoned his flock? Women wailed at
the walls of his house, peasants left offerings at the steps to the Temple of Caesar
and warriors, brave of heart, bemoaned the loss of the city's most renowned manager.
Within the monstrous compound, resplendent with some of the finest workmanship
and architecture in all of Alastari, time stood eerily still. Caesar's opulent
facilities lay in disrepair, dust and cobwebs covering the many buildings located
within. No longer did the servants of Caesar toil at cleaning, scrubbing, polishing
and maintaining the grandeur of his legendary house. The expansive, finely manicured
gardens, once considered one of the wonders of Alastari, were absent of Caesar's
gardeners, illegal immigrants from distant Zukal who had hazarded great perils to
toil in the service of Caesar. No longer did they pick the fruit from the trees in
the sprawling orchards and rolling vineyards located on Caesar's vast estate. No
longer did they serve beneath such benevolence.
Unknown to the wretched masses of Arvat, Caesar had remained within the walls of
his compound during these long years. Perhaps the rumors among Arvat's populace were
true? Perhaps there were rumblings and mysterious happenings occurring within the
walls. But why had there not been an omen from the Temple of Caesar to guide the
ignorant rabble of the city?
After five long years, the master of the house had finally stirred from his
self-imposed exile. It was a bright and sunny morning in the bustling city of Arvat.
The humidity of the marshland filled the air. Swarms of mosquitoes buzzed throughout
the city. Water fowl screeched and snakes slithered through the tangled reeds in
search of new prey. Occasionally, the shrill scream of an unfortunate peasant
emanated from the marshland, caught unawares by one of the massive crocodiles
residing there.
Caesar extinguished his Havana Especial and lay back in his oversized leather
chair. He was sitting in his favorite room, the Augustus Smoking Chamber, now filled
with dust covered leather sofas and oversized chairs. The smoke wafted through the
stale air and encircled the spidery webs that hung throughout the chamber. The
blazing Arvat sun managed to slightly penetrate the darkness of the room, causing
Caesar to shield his eyes from the light. In front of him, the empty bottles of
vodka were lined about him. A glass or so remained in one bottle, a survivor from
last evening's lonely ritual. His head ached and his mouth was parched. The
Stolichnaya Gods had been much kinder last night than they were this morning.
An elderly, gray haired figured emerged from the shadows of the cavernous
hallway that adjoined the room. His diminutive stature abundantly clear as he stood
before Caesar, silhouetted against the shimmering wall hangings.
"Sire, your plans have been executed according to schedule."
Caesar rubbed the stubble on his pale face and spat upon the dusty floor, the
taste of cigars and vodka overpowering his senses.
"Very good, Trebonius. Light the flame atop the Temple of Caesar. We have
returned in full force! I will show Alastari that we did not perish in the wilds of
Gateway. Arvat's greatest killers have survived to fight another day! Sound the
horn of Caesar! Let the challenge echo throughout the mud huts and crumbling walls
of Arvat! Awaken the wretched masses! Let the poor rabble of the city despair and
worship at the Temple of Caesar once more. We will usher in an Arvat Renaissance. A
new era of Roman Power and Glory shall emerge. We have returned!"
With that, Caesar arose and walked proudly and eloquently from the great smoking
chamber, bottles clanging and breaking against the stone in his wake. Time to
restore our stature here in Arvat! Time for new adventure.
SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in ARVAT this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there
are sorrows to drown for CALL THE PRIEST, whose 2-3-0 this turn dropped them by 5
into 9th. ROMAN HEROES stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-1 into a 4 space move up
the rankings. This brings them up to 4th place. Good work, guys! The DEVIL
ADVOCATES guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You
never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, IZUSU TROOPER fought
JUSTICE and gained 22 points and contributed to FLAMING DEATH's 2-3-0. JAMES
HETFIELD has lost to DEMMELL, falling 15 points, while helping make AXE KICKERS a
0-3-0 turn. FREEWHEEL BURNIN' challenged for the Duelmastership this turn,
attempting to dethrone PHILANTHROPISTS' warrior. Defending his title for another
turn, MIMOSA kept CALL THE PRIEST's warrior, FREEWHEEL BURNIN', from claiming the
throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that
The Warty Toad uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the ANGELS OF PAIN stable
was the most avoided team this turn. Come on ARVAT, what are you afraid of? And
guess who avoided ANGELS OF PAIN stable the most? Believe it or not, it was ROMAN
HEROES. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that LOGGERHEAD from
FISHERMAN'S WHARF was ARVAT's most challenged warrior this turn. Well now, what do
you expect when someone like EVE ELWON from DEVIL ADVOCATES challenges down 18 points
to fight HERON of FISHERMAN'S WHARF? It pains me to see warriors take advantage of
the system like this. EVE ELWON won victory over HERON, as if it surprises anyone.
I.M. CEYTIN of DEVIL ADVOCATES had better have a good reason for challenging down 10
points in a challenge which he won. I thought I.M. CEYTIN showed great skill and
promise when he subdued KIRK HAMMETT. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. Whatever bright future BRUTUS may
have had, it's all history now. The manager of THE REPUBLIC has lost a promising
2-0-0 warrior. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their
enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
I like this place, ARVAT, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep
your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in ARVAT again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Dark One -- You are right, I am running Axe Kickers. Good guess. The League Arcane
decided to represent itself somewhere and we chose Arvat as we all have some history
here. Thanks for the welcome back. -- Talon Volksie
Caesar -- Ditto Dark One, welcome back. -- Talon V.
Caesar -- It's been a long time since your warriors have graced the sands of Arvat.
Much has changed since we last crossed swords. My demeanor has calmed, my temper has
subsided. Yet, when the name Caesar rolls off my lips, it still brings a sneer.
Have at thee, sir!! -- D. Noble
Floyd/Talon -- Hey guys, sorry I missed last turn--I was mourning the death of one of
our future TVs...I will be more diligent in attendance here in the future! It's nice
to see you both over in Darkholm too!! -- D. Noble
Fisherman's Wharf -- Well I was going for skills with that upchallenge but looks
Laura got a little too excited. Sorry about that. -- TGG
Artemedorus -- Well that was a horrible matchup for me. Maybe 10 fights from now
we'll try again. -- Lorie
Welcome to all the new teams and returning teams. Looks like this arena is starting
to take off. -- TGG Lurocian Guard
Misery -- Well, I guess you loved my company, because I was sure miserable! But it
coulda been worse. Every time we see a new recruit standing at the back of the room,
hat in hand (figuratively speaking, because who wears hats today?), we all sweat it
out until someone--we hope someone ELSE--dies. And it wasn't me today. I like that.
-- Loggerhead
And I survived, which makes me feel, ah, cold and shivery but hey, I can feel, so I'm
alive, right? -- Heron
Bhalen -- And since I won, I didn't die, either. And, for which I am genuinely
happy, neither did you. After all, who needs a bunch of death around? Not to
mention the bloodfeuds. -- Sarlow the Still Alive Also
Larry -- Huh, you're a big one. I was that big, once, but it didn't last. Thanks
for not killing me, either. -- Fishgiz
P.S. But no thanks for teaching me no skills. I was paying attention, you know.
Laura -- Which means YOU are the killer, you wretched wench. I'm pickled for sure,
now. -- Ghost of Peter Pepper
P.S. Why didn't my great attractiveness stop you? (sigh) Well, at least I can be
massively cool about this, though I don't WANT to.
Ed. -- Jealousy would not be a problem, but I'd hate to see someone I could beat
going to the Dark Arena. -- Fishgiz
Ummmm...right. I thought this was about the six-foot tall "dwarf" syndrome....
-- Ed.
The Dark One -- It was very long and I don't think there was much honor involved. Oh
well, good luck trying to take the title from Mimosa. -- Rillion
Heron -- I just hoped you were as bad as I am, but unfortunately you aren't. -- Gelen
Yeah, I'm a back into the Inits! I might be able to win a fight again. -- Gelen
Mimosa -- Congratulations, I was beginning to think our record against each other was
going to get completely one sided. Well done, but I am still up 6-2 on you. --
Roland
Sarlow -- That did not work out well for me at all. Bummer. -- Bhalen
Ron Way -- Huh, you are good considering how badly the Dark One keeps bad mouthing
you. You should have a talk with him about that. -- Demmell
Rage -- Argh, it wasn't a very good turn for us here. Congrats on the win. --
Demetren
Kirk Hammett -- Hammett kirk! That makes it a complete sweep for us, 0-5. Argh, a
fitting end to a horrible turn. -- Gelen
League Arcane -- Welcome back to Arvat! Speak a bit, will ya! -- Rillion
All -- For those of you who welcomed me back, thank you! It is great to be back in
Arvat and amongst such fine managers! -- Caesar
Lorie -- I missed my Will train, but won the fight! Consider yourself "scummed." My
mentor, Artie 1 (32-1124) went 33-18-0 here and was one of many Roman Duelmasters.

Eddie Van Halen -- Ouch! Now I know what David Lee Roth feels like.... -- Publius
Fishgiz -- Alas, yes, I'm a six foot dwarf in addition to being a downright pud...
perhaps Caesar will spare me from a lifetime of misery and send me off to visit the
Dark Champion. -- Publius
Dark One -- Bring on your Bloodfeud. You can kill him off if you like. -- Caesar

Civil War/The Crusades
The next edition of the Civil War series is to be held in Tobir, arena 14, beginning
November 25th with a round where all participating managers must DA all 5 of their
warriors; in addition all warriors must be prefixed with an A an F or a D in the
following manner: A-Broke Stroker or (A) Broke Stroker. Names simply beginning with
the letter of your federation will NOT count as properly prefixed! Existing teams
are welcome but no warrior who survives the DA who had prior Fight Experience (arena
or tourney) will be allowed to score or challenge into the contest teams. There will
be an equal number of teams set up for each of the three factions (Andorian, Free
Blades, and Delarquan) to create sides as equal as possible. This along with the DA
round should set up pretty equal footing for all managers. After the DA there will
be another round where you can either DA again or fight your new, or surviving,
warriors so they will be set up to challenge an opponent beginning on round 1. So as
a recap DA round, turn 0, then turn 1 it begins with the following rules:
The Civil War to be held in arena 14.
- The contest runs for 10-28 turns (barring ties).
- No tourney participation allowed. Teams with warriors participating in any
tournament are disqualified.
- An even number of teams per faction worked out by the Faction Leaders. No later
substitutions are allowed.
- If a manager brings in a second team and challenges into the contest he is DQ'd and
his side will fight one team short!
- Three factions will be participating: Andorian, Delarquan, Free Blades
- Everyone prefixes their warrior with A-, F-, or D- (No prefix = disqualification of
the warrior)
- Turn DA: (The DA Round) November 25, 2006. Every warrior must DA. (Warriors not
DA'd on Turn 0 are disqualified)
- Turn 0: December 9th, 2006. There will be no scoring this turn it is meant to
allow for challenges on turn 1.
- Turn 1+: Scoring as detailed below
- Each team gets 1 point for defeating a warrior from an opposing team.
- Fights against warriors on your team do not generate points in any situation.
- The team with the most points each turn gets a Battle Point (if there is a tie for
the most points then no Battle Points are accrued)
- The first team to 10 Battle Points wins the war
- Managers of teams on the winning side each receive a +1 bonus potion to be used on
a warrior on their contest team. This must be applied within a month of the
conclusion of the contest and the team must have been active on the last turn of
the contest.
Anyone wishing to participate, and feels they can probably stick around for the
duration (don't want to handicap a side, of course unforeseeable events cannot be
planned for), should either diplo me at THE DEATH SQUAD(63) in Tobir (arena 14) or
place a personal ad in the arena. You may also contact me via the Duel2.com boards!
Let me know which faction you would like to fight for! This contest is intended to
be open to ALL managers wishing to pit themselves against each other to try and
determine which faction has the best managers! -- Street Legal
14 September 2006
I am back in the arena and thinking back to those days in 1984 where I was a
novice and clueless manager.
Now, 22 years later it looks like I am an ancient and once again clueless
manager.
I am looking to recover some old warriors. Since none of them are Aimed Blows,
they are no threat to win anything. I just want to see how they turned out.
The Couatl 2-17
Madam Butterfly 20-701
Gypsy Moth 20-703
King Crab 21-1
Priestess Python 26-1388
Please contact me at DekeYoung@Comcast.net if you know about any of these ancient
warriors, or just want to bs about the old, old, old times.
