TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The mid-afternoon sun shimmered over the seemingly endless vineyard country.
Thousands of coolies labored throughout the rolling hills of green foiliage,
harvesting grapes for the season to blend yet another award-winning bottling of
Caesare Estates Vineyards. In the foreground, the massive Roman country villa with
its huge great house and accompanying winery facilities played host to Caesar and his
lieutenants. They had decided to leave the hustle and bustle of Arvat for the
country retreat that Caesar had constructed on his vast tract in the vineyard country
near Arvat. Here they had remained for the past few months, running their various
arena operations located in cities abroad.
Caesar, Darius and Trebonius were sitting comfortably on the enormous deck that
extended from the home. Servants fanned them and blocked out the sun as the men
sipped a 1998 Augustus Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon from crystal goblets. Caesar
stared out at the activity in the vineyard with great pleasure. He had amassed a
fortune, built tremendous structures and almost single handedly sparked an economic
boom time for Arvat since his return. What else was there? What other challenges
lay ahead for him? Improving his golf game?
"Why even bother with the gladiatorial games?" he stated, "The quality of the
recruits out there is horrendous. How many witless wonders must we tolerate? Look
around you. We are wealthy beyond belief. Who else could employ all these illegal
coolies to pick our grapes and bottle our wines?"
"Sire, let us not forget that the games are what brought us this welath,"
commented Darius. "We have been an Arvat institution for quite some time now. What
of our allies? Our loyal fans? The multitude of women that hurl themselves at our
feet?"
"The women are a nice perk. Good point, Darius," replied Caesar, a
grin upon his stunningly handsome face.
"Caesar, The Trainer, a.k.a. Mad Max, has returned to the sands, seized the
title, and now openly mocks you in the Duelmaster's Forum!" exclaimed Trebonius.
"Certainly you will respond! This is a bad omen."
"Cut the high priest nonsense about omens. You have never even been to a
religious gathering before we built you that temple!" laughed Caesar. "You also
killed more warriors than any other in Arvat history. And who is The Trainer? Where
has he been all this time? Running about heavy-handed and half-cocked?"
"I agree that the Gladiatorial Commission has become complacent and the quality
of recruits does not make additions to our stable a very appealing prospect," stated
Darius. "In addition, the upper echelons are not very fun either. Both Trebonius
and I are faced with the daunting prospect of fighting these Aimed Blow pracitioners
on a regular basis. Ever since the Lady Greywand enhanced their powers, they are
virtually unbeatable. Romulus was dethroned in Free Blades last week without landing
one blow against an unarmed Aimed Blow. Five minutes of futile swings and he drops
from exhaustion. The Gladiatorial Commission is remiss in their responsibility to
maintain a fair and balanced playing field. Why have they not appealed to the Lady
Greywand to correct this deficiency?"
"This is why I have less and less interest in the games," stated Caesar. "Why
bother when the upper and lower ranks are riddled with issues? We can simply sit
here, sip wine and enjoy our vast sums of wealth. I've also recently approved the
plans for our new golf club. An eighteen hole course with a top of the line country
club. Let's see if that Destitute Noble guy can afford a membership there, eh?"
All three men laughed aloud at the comment. Destitute Noble was also planning a
return to Arvat. Caesar had secretly dispatched one of his turbo charged carrier
pigeons to Noble's dilapidated palace to forge a loose and shaky pact with his arch
rival: Return to the arena games and Rome shall follow suit!
"We must ensure that our dynasty continues. Darius and I are getting old and
may retire soon," stated Trebonius. "Who will continue the legacy of the Roman
Heroes?"
"Enough, enough... I've heard enough. I will continue to fund this money
draining endeavor!" exclaimed Caesar. "But we will field only five warriors rather
than our full fifteen. If the Gladiatorial Commission won't improve the recruit
selections or correct this ridiculous Aimed Blow flaw, we will simply contribute less
revenue to them. Let them chew on that!"
"A wise decision as always, sire," stated Darius.
"The Roman Heroes will return to the sands of the Arvat Coliseum!" declared
Caesar from his lofty porch. "It is the Will of Caesar! Caesar has spoken!"
Built atop the giant deck were several driving range style tee boxes. Caesar
grabbed his PING Rapture 460cc Driver with its 10.5 degree loft and stiff flex. Like
a golf god, he took a flawless swing at the Titleist Pro V1 ball sitting atop the
tee. The ball sailed a country mile into the vineyard before it struck one of the
coolie laborers right square in the head! The coolie hit the deck rather swiftly.
Caesar and his men winced at the thought...
"Great shot, sire!" exclaimed Darius. All three men laughed heartily and took a
swig of their wines. Time for another run at the Arvat Coliseum...
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, ARVAT? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, LUROCIAN GUARD, since RILL'S
GCSC2 took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps up,
SARATOGA GLORY, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 5 in the
rankings? SHADOW RANGERS turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 4th place rank in the
listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of course,
we're all terribly impressed to see BUBBA win a fight and gain 18 points, terribly.
Tsk, tsk, SUPERMON beat BELLE ZEYBUL and BELLE ZEYBUL lost 14 points. You're
breakin' my heart. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as ROLAND takes the
Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Welcome Wench,
humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From
ARVAT's trash dumps?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. What's the big D? LUROCIAN GUARD was the most avoided
team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like
ROMAN HEROES avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you
ask me. Hmph. PERSONAL LEGEND was challenged more times this turn than the
Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. And we have HEADLESS
CHICKEN in a challenge, going down 12 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought
HEADLESS CHICKEN showed great skill and promise when she won victory over DEMETREN.
All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ARVAT's
morgue. More variety. Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see
RAGE and ANGELS OF PAIN at The Welcome Wench tonight celebrating their bloodfeud
victory over BALD SPOTS. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate
catches up with you sooner that later?
What does the ARVAT arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Glad
